ittle did Cedarburg’s original settlers know that their handsome limestone and cream city brick structures constructed in the mid-19th century would stand the test of time. Today many of these original buildings remain unaltered, and serve as charming homes to numerous restaurants, shops, galleries and other local attractions.

Ludwig Groth, who built his home along the banks of Cedar Creek in 1842, was the first recorded settler of Cedarburg. Two years later, other settlers purchased a tract of land from Groth and established a grist mill, which remains a distinguished element of Cedarburg’s skyline today. Located on the banks of Cedar Creek, the grist mill is currently home to several businesses and a microbrewery whose walkway entrance spans the rushing waters of the creek.

Four additional dams and mills were constructed in the following years, centralizing the life of the fledgling town along the banks of Cedar Creek.

Built in 1864, the Wittenberg Mill stood as the sole woolen mill west of Philadelphia to produce worsted yarns.

The original mill buildings on Bridge Road still stand today, forming the

historic Cedar Creek Settlement, and they house a variety of charming shops, restaurants and artists’ studios, as well as an award-winning winery.

Owing to the efforts of the Landmarks Commission and the Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce, Cedarburg’s downtown Washington Avenue area was designated as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in the mid-1980s. Adjacent to the downtown area is the Columbia Road Historic District, which was listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places

in 1992. These commercial and residential districts are a must-see for visitors.

The Ozaukee County Historical Society makes its home in the “Interurban Depot,” a restored landmark that functioned as a depot for the electric rail lines from Milwaukee to Sheboygan from 1907 to 1947. The facility is the first stop for anyone researching family history, or wishing to access census records, statistics, maps and photographs.

Historical information is also available at the Cedarburg Visitor Center in its home on Columbia Road, sharing space with the Cedarburg History Museum and the Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce.

Add to the mix a thriving arts community and a full calendar of festivals, entertainment and special events ... it is perhaps no wonder visitors consistently rank Cedarburg as one of Wisconsin’s bestloved small-town destinations.

Although many people come to Cedarburg to shop and relax in one of the charming bed-and-breakfast inns, Cedarburg prides itself on a variety of attractions that keep life interesting from day to day, season to season.

First stop for visitors might be the Cedarburg Visitor Center tucked inside the Cedarburg History Museum on Columbia Road across from the Grist Mill. While collecting information on what 

to see and do, visitors may also enjoy a trip down memory lane as they check out the Roger C. Christensen Collection of antique advertising and packaging art and marvel over photographs by former local historians that confirm many of Cedarburg’s buildings today look just as they did more than 150 years ago.

Cedarburg is also home to one of the last covered bridges in the state of Wisconsin Of course, thousands of visitors come specifically for the four free festivals, organized by Festivals of Cedarburg. Winter Festival is always held in February, Strawberry Festival in June, Wine & Harvest in September and last, but not least, Oktoberfest.

More than 100,000 people have been known to throng the downtown area over a two-day period. To find out more about each individual festival, visit www.cedarburgfestival.org.

Renowned for community events such as the Fourth of July Hometown Celebration and the annual Christmas Tree lighting, visitors also enjoy the festive Pumpkin Walk on Halloween and the shopping during several themed events each year.

Then the holiday season is upon us. Beginning in November, shoppers strolling through the historic district are always enchanted by thousands of twinkling lights and gaily decorated shops throughout the downtown area. And adding to the Currier & Ives-like ambience is Santa’s Workshop, a veritable magnet to children of all ages. A Cedarburg Christmas: Everyone’s Home for the Holidays Cedarburg is beautiful throughout the year, but never more than during the holiday season! A hub of holiday activity, there is always something festive to do or see. The Cedarburg Christmas Committee, under the umbrella of Festivals of Cedarburg, Inc., gives a one-stop place for visitors and residents to learn about events from mid-November through December. t’s not surprising that Cedarburg has been voted No. 1 for Best Shopping time and time again. The city’s historic downtown offers a multitude of shopping opportunities, and all are within easy walking distance of one another. All you have to do is park your car in one of the many parking lots dotted around town, grab your bag and off you go.

Don’t expect to find any big box stores in Cedarburg. Instead, saunter and browse your way along Washington Avenue, perhaps starting on the north end where it crosses Bridge Street, and start your day at the Cedar Creek Settlement. This restored 1864 woolen mill was saved from the wrecking ball by local residents Jim and Sandy Pape almost 50 years ago, and has been converted into a delightful mix of specialty shops, restaurants and an award-winning winery. Visit the cool, limestone cellars where Cedar Creek wine is fermented, aged and bottled, and be sure to take the time to sample a glass or two.

Climb the stairs to Cedarburg’s oldest pottery shop (est. 1978) featuring a fine array of Wisconsin pottery, and browse through stores offering the latest in women’s apparel, artisan and European gift shops, artists’ studios and more. If you stop by the corner store that specializes in olive oils and balsamic vinegars, you might be lucky enough to catch one of its popular cooking classes. Then cross

the street to check out the whimsical garden furniture made from recycled plastic which is so attractive you’ll want to bring it into your home.

Anyone with a sweet tooth might think they’ve died and gone to heaven as there is not one, but several stores catering specifically to candy lovers, each with its own specialty ... think caramel apples covered in Belgian chocolate, old-time specialty candies, fudge and nuts of every shape and size, some chocolate covered and others purely savory.

As you wander south on Washington Avenue, you’ll be tempted by one-of-a-kind boutiques, eclectic art galleries, an antique lighting shop, distinctive jewelry stores offering the latest in custom designs as well as fine antique pieces. You'll find vintage furnishings, resale furniture, consignment clothing stores, artists’ co-ops and specialty products ranging from popcorn, cookie cutters, herbs, spices and teas, plus other gourmet products not commonly found elsewhere. There are garden ornaments that will make you smile and a fairytale-like toy store featuring Americanmade products fit for young princes and princesses. edarburg’s bustling arts scene is well represented by an assortment of galleries, co-ops and studios, many tucked away in quaint historic buildings in the heart of downtown.

In addition to the Cedarburg Art Museum and the Cedarburg Cultural Center, both of which offer exhibits and workshops representing all media, be sure to check out the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts on nearby Portland Road that specializes in the preservation of fiber arts traditions.

The city’s reputation as a thriving artists’ community is in part due to the presence of a vibrant Cedarburg Artists’ Guild that boasts close to 250 members, and the guild’s popular annual events – the Plein Air Painting Event, Covered Bridge Art Studio Tour and the Holiday Art Fair – each one drawing many hundreds of visitors to the area.

The lively local entertainment scene in Cedarburg offers amazing musical talent for a fraction of the price of big city venues. The Cultural Center on Washington Avenue is home to an eclectic mix of exhibits, monthly open mic nights, historical programs and a variety of classes for all ages. Known for hosting exciting musical events throughout the entire year, the cultural center’s mission is to provide a gathering place to celebrate community, the arts and local heritage.

Nationally renowned performers of every genre are showcased through the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center Visiting Artists’ Series in its state-of-the-art theater adjacent to Cedarburg High School. or outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of opportunities for leisure-time activities in the Cedarburg area. The meandering creek that winds through the city offers opportunities for fishing and kayaking, and a newly constructed walkway behind the historic downtown stores beckons visitors to stroll along Cedar Creek while enjoying the beautiful views.

Cedarburg is also home to 34 local parks that offer something for every age, including woodlands and picnic areas, open spaces, play grounds, golf courses and ball parks. The outdoor water park and pool on Evergreen Boulevard is especially popular with families,

and the pool’s small “sandy beach” area for toddlers gets a lot of use.

Bicyclists passing through the city on the 30-mile paved Ozaukee Interurban Trail that spans the entire length of Ozaukee County will find a welcoming environment to stop, park their bikes and wander through the downtown historic district.

And during winter months, if cross-country skiing and snow shoeing don’t appeal, Cedar Creek Park is the perfect outdoor setting for a family outing at the community skating rink, open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day. City of Cedarburg

The City of Cedarburg seeks to preserve its historic, “small town” atmosphere and quality of life while balancing the desires of our community by delivering high quality programs and services in a fiscally responsible manner.

Heading the City of Cedarburg, along with elected Mayor O’Keefe, are seven council members representing the seven districts of the city along with more than a dozen municipal departments.

A professional city administrator directs and coordinates operations and services.

Together they ensure the city meets the growing needs of its citizens.

Town of Cedarburg

The Town of Cedarburg calls for the provision of quality, essential services, performed in a modern, cost-effective and efficient manner. The town administration includes a professional administrator, Tim Rhode, and clerk.

The town is governed by an elected town board, which includes a town chairman and supervisors.

Cedarburg Police & Fire Departments

Administered by the City of Cedarburg, the Cedarburg Police Department serves the safety needs of the city, employing sworn officers and civilian employees through its emergency government sector, while the Town of Cedarburg is served by a town constable and county sheriff.

The Cedarburg Fire Department is made up almost entirely of community volunteers. The fire department covers approximately 33 square miles in both the city and town. The department takes great pride in its volunteer support and fundraising activities that make it the “best of the best.”

oasting a population of approximately 11,500 in the city and another 6,000 residents in the town, Cedarburg offers the best in small-town American living, yet it is fostering a sound business environment. In 2018, Cedarburg was home to over 20 new businesses.

Cedarburg’s leaders have developed long-range plans for brick and mortar expansion to ensure structured growth. Simultaneously the community remains steadfast in the protection of the environment and the preservation of its historical essence. Through the efforts of both the City and Town of Cedarburg governing bodies, Cedarburg offers both its established and prospective business leaders ample opportunity for optimal success and growth.

Support for economic growth is offered by a wealth of financial institutions that call Cedarburg home, all dedicated to providing superb services and programs to both private investors and businesses. The City of Cedarburg is equipped with a Revolving Loan Fund designed to create jobs, encourage private investment and offer a financing alternative for expanding or start-up businesses. An Economic Development Loan Program is yet another option.

The Town of Cedarburg offers a Business Development Loan program that provides new and expanding businesses belowmarket rates and favorable terms for land/building and equipment acquisitions, interior finishes and other improvements. The Town also offers a variety of other business incentives, and offers one of the lowest property tax rates in all of Ozaukee County.

The Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce, formally established in 1945, also persists in its commitment to foster healthy economic growth that will provide residents with an appealing environment in which to live and work. The Chamber is a business-focused nonprofit that serves an average of nearly 300 businesses and strives to provide high quality services and programs geared toward maintaining and increasing the area’s vitality.

The Chamber works closely with the City of Cedarburg Economic Development Coordinator and Economic Development Committee to attract and retain businesses. The office of the coordinator maintains site search listings, as well as current market

Cedarburg’s award-winning public school system is committed to providing it’s over 3,000 students with a world-class education.

One high school, one middle school and three elementary schools provide high-quality instruction delivered by top-notch teachers.

Cedarburg’s curriculum is designed to prepare students to be productive, responsible citizens who will be able to achieve their goals and dreams. With a favorable student-staff ratio, instructors provide students with individualized attention, and the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The Cedarburg School District is rated as the No. 1 school district in Ozaukee County and within the top two percent of the school districts in Wisconsin, based on the state Department of Public Instruction Report Card. Other CSD accolades include having the No. 1 ACT score in Ozaukee county, achieving the third-highest ACT score in the state, ranking within the top one percent of high schools in the country and having a record of 22 Advanced Placement courses available at the high school level.

In addition, Cedarburg’s K-12 efforts boast an extra-curricular participation rate of 78 percent. The Cedarburg School District

offers early childhood and 4-year-old kindergarten options.

Local private schools include a Lutheran school and a Catholic school. First Immanuel Lutheran School is nationally-accredited and exceeds Wisconsin educational guidelines, serving students age 2 through eighth grade. St. Francis Borgia Catholic School serves early childhood through eighth-grade students and practices differentiated instruction within the classroom. This method of teaching encourages the use of technology as an essential tool. Cedarburg also houses a Montessori school for preschool and kindergarten.

The Cedarburg Community Scholarship Fund and the Cedarburg High School Scholarship Program provide financial aid to many graduating students.
