The Farmville Area Chamber has been serving our region since 1948 and exists to improve the quality of life of those living and doing business in our community by working in partnership with its members and local government. This Chamber has far-reaching positive effects on our community through such things as education initiatives, the Leadership Farmville program, tourism promotions, business seminars and expos, monthly networking events, and many other outreach opportunities to serve our diverse and growing population.
Shopping and dining opportunities are many and varied in Farmville and throughout Prince Edward and Cumberland counties. Four Virginia State Parks are located within our borders offering camping, fishing, canoeing/kayaking, zip lining, hiking, horseback, hunting, and of course – history. Civil War buffs constantly frequent the Route of Lee’s Retreat Driving Tour. The Robert R. Moton Museum is a center for the study of civil rights in education and serves as the anchor tenant on the Civil Rights and Education Heritage Trail. Our newest tourist attraction is the High Bridge Trail, complete with a breathtaking historic bridge overlook. This new park offers recreational opportunities for its neighbors and nearby residents, as well as draws many tourists into our area.

Our area, known as Virginia’s Heartland, is rich in history that tells a story of courage and perseverance. Located in the Heart of Virginia, the Farmville Area includes the Town of Farmville, the County of Cumberland, and the County of Prince Edward. Prince Edward County dates to 1754, Cumberland County to 1749, and the Town of Farmville to 1798. Farmville soon became the center of trade, education, law, and finance for the surrounding seven counties, a position it maintains today, as the largest municipality between Richmond and Lynchburg. It is home to many successful businesses, industries, and cultural and educational organizations. Hampden-Sydney College, a selective private four-year college, was founded in 1776; Longwood University, chartered in 1839 as Farmville Female Seminary, was the first state teacher training college in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Patrick Henry, five-time Governor of Virginia, served as Prince Edward’s representative in the Virginia General Assembly. As the county’s representative, he participated with John Randolph in debates over the ratification of the U.S. Constitution.

The first call for independence came from Cumberland County – when the certainty of the approaching conflict came, Cumberland led the Colonies in calling for a completely independent American nation. On April 22, 1776, from the balcony of Effingham Tavern, Carter H. Harrison read the Committee’s instructions to the county delegates to the State convention: “We therefore, your constituents, instruct you positively to declare for an Independency, that you solemnly abjure any allegiance to His Britannic Majesty and bid him a good night forever …” The Virginia Convention decided to follow Cumberland’s lead, and this resulted in the Virginian Resolutions, which were presented to the Continental Congress and embodied in the Declaration of Independence. The Civil War left its mark on Farmville, with its last major battle at nearby Sailor’s Creek. Lee retreated directly through the town, and the Confederates crossed and then attempted to burn the railroad's impressive High Bridge, a 120-foot-high, nearly half-mile-long span across the Appomattox River. The bridge and other sites along Lee’s Retreat are part of the state’s Civil War Trails.

Farmville is also home to some key players in the early fight for civil rights; its citizens’ crusade for equal rights in education drew Martin Luther King, Jr. and other national leaders to visit our area. The Robert Russa Moton High School, site of the 1951 student strike, is a National Historic Landmark, a civil rights museum, and the centerpiece of Virginia’s Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail, honoring the efforts of local students and citizens who paved the way for integrated public education nationwide. After 250 years, our area continues to exemplify all that is best about the American way of life. Seven historic buildings and two historic districts in the County of Prince Edward are listed on the Virginia Register of Historic Places: • Briery Church was constructed in 1760 and was the first structure in Prince Edward to be listed on the Virginia Historic Register. (Route 747 – Briery Church Road) • Debtor’s Prison, a small, solid log jail for debtors was built in 1787. (Route 15 – Farmville Road) • Old Prince Edward County Clerk’s Office, now known as Worsham Clerk’s Office, served as the first clerk’s office at Prince Edward Courthouse. (Route 15 – Farmville Road) • Falkland, a large, framed plantation house was built in 1815 by the Watkins family, important figures in the early history of Prince Edward County and Hampden-Sydney College. The Farmville Area, known as the Heart of Virginia, is just a day’s drive from 76 percent of the United States population. We are located within an easy drive of several metropolitan areas, including Richmond, Washington, Lynchburg, Charlottesville and Roanoke. You can be in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in an hour and visit the popular Virginia beaches in two and one half hours.

Roads: Interstates within 60 miles include I95 (north and south); I-85 (north and south); I-64 (east and west). U.S. Highways 460 and 15 are routed through Farmville and Prince Edward County, and U.S. 60 runs through Cumberland. Virginia Primary Route 45 connects Farmville with Cumberland.

Air Transportation: Richmond International Airport (70 miles) and Lynchburg Municipal Airport (55 miles) serve the Farmville area for passenger, freight, and air express services. The Farmville Regional Airport, located five miles north of Farmville in Cumberland County, has a 4,400 foot runway. Services offered at the airport include aviation fuel (100LL Avgas and Jet A), aircraft parking, flight instruction, courtesy transportation, pilots lounge, public telephone, computerized weather, internet access, conference room and restrooms. Aviation fuel is available 7 days a weeks, 24 hours a day with "pay at the pump" option. Bus: Greyhound provides inter-city transportation. The Farmville Area Bus provides intra-city service and Prince Edward Rural Transit (PERT) to several locations in Prince Edward County. Motor Freight: Approximately 26 trucking firms service the surrounding area.

The community calendar for the Farmville area is filled with entertaining programs and events that reflect the personality and energy of the people who live in and around the area. The Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce is the hub for the online Community Calendar of events. They encourage you to post your event information on the calendar as often as possible to keep the community updated on the many great events in our Community. The Heart of Virginia Festival, founded in 1979 and held on the first Saturday in May, celebrates the arts, music and culture of the region. The festival is a community wide effort, sustained by the Town of Farmville with many volunteers and participants from throughout the area. The Festival is a day-long event beginning in downtown Farmville and concluding with one of the best fireworks display in Virginia at the Farmville Regional Airport. In Cumberland Courthouse, Cumberland’s Patriot’s Day is held on the third Saturday of April, and includes vendors with food, games, crafts, an art exhibit and a Civil War Camp exhibit.
Fourth of July brings thousands to Cartersville, in Cumberland County, for bands, games, vendors and incredible fireworks at the end of a busy day. Farmville is also host to the annual Fireworks After Dark, a Fourth of July celebration at the Farmville Regional Airport. Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood University frequently open their doors to the community for amazing concerts, plays, lectures, public forums and seminars. The Atkinson Museum at Hampden-Sydney offers a permanent exhibition that highlights the history of the College, from the arrival of the first Presbyterians in this region (ca. 1770), until the 20th century, with a special emphasis on the birth of the College (1775), the Union Theological Seminary (1812), the New College (1820), the Medical Department (1837), and the role of the College during the War years. Visitors can also expect to see a constant variety of changing exhibitions in the East Gallery, which highlight the College curriculum, symposiums, honor faculty achievements, alumni, and supplement other special College events.
Waterworks Players serve Farmville and the surrounding counties by bringing the magic of live theatre to area residents and providing an artistic outlet for local actors, singer, designers, and technicians. Located at the corner of Third and Main streets, the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) is the art museum serving Longwood University and all of South Central Virginia. The LCVA is accredited by the American Association of Museums, an achievement that is attained by fewer than five percent of all museums in the United States. The LCVA offers a wide variety of educational programs for all ages and showcases exhibitions of international, national, and regional renown. The Center’s permanent art collection includes world-class examples of African, Chinese, Folk and American art.

The Commonwealth Chorale is a group of over 130 performers drawing from fourteen counties in Southside Virginia. There are two major annual productions, which include classical choral music from Bach to modern compositions. The Summer Garden Opera (SGO) has become an integral part of the summertime fun in Farmville. On a warm night in mid-June each year opera fans of all ages are treated to great music, gourmet food and refreshments. The SGO presents concert style opera in a beautiful outdoor setting. The company hires professional opera singers from all over the country for performances of full-length operas. Just a few of the performances Farmville spectators have enjoyed are: Madama Butterfly by Puccini, Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte and Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri. The SGO thrives thanks to generous support from Centra, local businesses and private donations.

The Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library offers free Internet services with printing capability, a copy machine, outgoing fax service, videos, audios and over 35,000 books, including the latest bestsellers. A children’s coordinator is on staff and provides regular story hours for preschool children as well as scheduled activities for older children. A meeting room is available by reservation for community groups. Area residents are entitled to free library cards and the use of all services. The Cumberland County Public Library (CCPL) provides access to information resources, services, and programs to assist the citizens of Cumberland County in fulfilling their civic, cultural, intellectual and recreational endeavors. STEPS Inc., a nonprofit organization that trains and employs persons with diverse abilities hosts several special events throughout the year, including the Farmville Christmas Show … Shopping With a Cause in November, a two and a half day premier shopping event to kick off the holiday

shopping season. This Christmas Show features over 50 crafters and artisans. First Fridays, a monthly community event held May through October, provides area families the opportunity to meet with friends and enjoy a social evening with live bands and children’s activities at the Riverfront Park in downtown Farmville. There is no charge to attend these monthly concerts, but plenty of food and drink is available for sale, so come hungry. The annual Farmville Jaycee’s Christmas Parade, held on the first Sunday afternoon in December, is another well attended community holiday tradition. The streets are lined deep on both sides with excited Holiday fans. The Downtown Film Series Committee presents Stars Under the Stars, a program that welcomes the Farmville and surrounding communities to the grassy venue of the historic Crute Stage to enjoy cinema's classic films. Moviegoers are invited to bring chairs, blankets, and lots of friends on the second Friday of June, July, and August to enjoy popcorn, candy, drinks, and a movie under the stars. The Farmville Area has outstanding recreational opportunities for all outdoor enthusiasts. Canoeing, fishing, hiking, biking, boating, zip-lining …and many other outdoor sports – it’s all right here in Southern Virginia! Riverside Park is located adjacent to the Appomattox River on Farmville’s North Main Street. It is home to the First Friday concert series (May-October). The park may be rented for community events. Farmville’s Dogwood Trail stretches approximately 1/2 mile through a beautiful hardwood forest. You will also find nearby, the Sarah Terry Walking Trail, which encompasses the entire area of Wilck's Lake and begins at the Lake’s boat ramp parking lot near the Skateboard Park. The total length of the trail is 1.6 miles. The campus of Hampden-Sydney College hosts The Wilson Trail, a circuit of nature trails used by hikers and bikers. The Willis River offers floats through Cumberland County, and the Appomattox River offers the same through Farmville. The James River, beautiful in scenery and busy with recreational activities, is located within a short drive. The Friends of the Appomattox River are continually working to improve stream accessibility in Prince Edward County. The Farmville Blueway offering paddlers a pleasant float from Wilck’s Lake to Riverside Park and includes approximately two miles of flat water for paddling opportunities which enhance Farmville’s quality of life.
The Sandy River Reservoir is a 740-acre county-owned lake in Prince Edward that is stocked and managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Public facilities at the reservoir include a double board ramp with courtesy pier and a 150-foot fishing pier. The nationally regarded 845-acre Briery Creek Lake and 3,100-acre Wildlife Management Area, located about seven miles south of Farmville, appeals to hunters and fishermen. Wilck’s Lake Park is a 175-acre natural area located in Farmville. A 35-acre lake is the centerpiece of this picturesque recreational area. Amenities include a children’s play area, skate-board park, the Sarah Terry Trail, soccer fields, and a private island which can be reserved to host parties, weddings, and other social events. Use of the Skateboard Park does require a free membership card. Cumberland County boasts one of the best multi-use (hike, bike, and horseback) trails in the area. Cumberland State Forest is home of 16-mile Willis River Hiking trail (foot traffic only) and miles of multi-use trails for horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking. High Bridge Trail State Park is a 31 mile rails to trails conversion that runs through the counties of Prince Edward, Cumberland and Nottoway as well as the towns of Farmville, Prospect, Rice, Burkeville, and Pamplin City. The trail is ideally suited for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. The park's namesake is High Bridge, a magnificent structure that is over 2400 feet long and is 125 feet above the Appomattox River. PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS Prince Edward County’s public school system educates over 2,513 prekindergarten to 12th grade students from Farmville and throughout the 357-square-mile county. The 135-acre Prince Edward Public Schools campus, just south of Farmville, includes 10 buildings that house an elementary school, a middle school, a high school and a career technical education center. Prince Edward County Elementary School encompasses grades PK-4 in a campus-style facility. The elementary school focuses on language arts, science, math, and social studies. Each year, a large percentage of juniors and seniors earn dual enrollment credit (high school honors classes and community college classes). Hampden-Sydney College permits PECHS students to take courses on its campus free of charge. Approximately 59 percent of PECHS graduates go on to college and 49 percent of the graduates complete a career-technical program. Prince Edward County Middle School serves grades 5-8. The school features computer labs and a library-media center. The middle school provides outstanding classes in band, foreign languages and art. Cumberland County Public Schools educates approximately 1,500 students in three schools, including Cumberland County Elementary School (grades pre-kindergarten-4), Cumberland Middle School (grades 58), and Cumberland High School (grades 9-12). Founded in 1839 as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, the institution had a series of names over its early history, becoming Longwood College in 1949 and turning fully co-educational in 1976. In 2002, Gov. Mark Warner signed legislation designating Longwood a university. In 2007, Longwood began competing in NCAA Division I athletics. The university is a member of the Big South Conference. Longwood students are known for their commitment to campus leadership in extracurricular life. There are more than 125 campus organizations, including active programs in sports and the arts, and a vibrant, service-oriented Greek system (four national sororities were founded at Longwood). Farmville has a mayor-council form of government and an appointed town manager. Like all towns in Virginia, Farmville is a semiindependent political unit. Farmville is located part in Prince Edward County and part in Cumberland County. The Mayor is elected atlarge and serves a four-year term. Farmville is divided into five wards, with a council member elected per ward and two council members elected at-large. A 30-member highly visible Police Department operates under the direction of a full-time chief and maintains Farmville’s low crime rate. An elected five-member Board of Supervisors governs Cumberland County. An elected eight-member Board of Supervisors governs Prince Edward County. In both counties, police protection is provided by the welltrained sheriff’s office staff and by Virginia State Police units assigned to each county. Cumberland, Prince Edward and the Town of Farmville each have a comprehensive zoning ordinance. Three volunteer fire departments in Cumberland and seven in Prince Edward provide fire protection. Two volunteer rescue squads operate in Cumberland. The Prince Edward County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Meherrin EMS and Pamplin EMS serve the citizens of both Farmville and Prince Edward County.
MEDIA Newspapers: The Farmville Herald, founded in 1890, has a circulation of over 8,700. Serving the Town of Farmville and the Counties of Prince Edward, Cumberland and Buckingham, The Farmville Herald is published two times a week. Also serving Cumberland County is Cumberland Today. The Richmond Times-Dispatch and other national newspapers are available daily to area residents. The Southside Messenger newspaper comes out weekly and covers several counties in and around Farmville. Radio: WFLO AM/FM Farmville, WVHL AM/FM Farmville, WPAK AM Farmville, WXJK FM Farmville, WBBC Blackstone, WBNN Dillwyn, and WSVS Crewe serve the Farmville area. Richmond and Lynchburg stations are also received in the area.

Residents of Cumberland, Farmville, and Prince Edward have a rich history of generosity, philanthropy and kind-heartedness. Each year, area businesses donate to worthy causes such as health care for children in need, providing shelter for battered women and children, and feeding the hungry. Individuals volunteer countless hours to tutor at-risk schoolchildren, provide food and assistance to elderly shut-ins and counsel those battling substance abuse problems. Students from area schools, Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood University, also assist in a wide variety of community service activities. The Farmville area has many houses of worship, representing a wide variety of denominations and faiths. Freedom of religion is cherished in in our area because of Virginia’s history as a sanctuary for people fleeing repression. Several early non-establishment churches, like Cub Creek Presbyterian Church, were started in our area in the late 1700s. You will find hundreds of churches and houses of worship representing dozens of faiths. Many of our churches are centers not only for the religious life of area residents, but are also architectural treasures. Their congregations add to the close-knit sense of community valued by our residents. In addition, many support the Farmville-Prince Edward-Cumberland community at large in invaluable ways, offering support groups and outreach programs that touch residents regardless of their religious beliefs and practices. The Heart of Your Adventure (THOYA) collaboration is making great things happen in the area! No matter what your sense of “Adventure” may be – the Farmville Community has it ready and waiting for you! THOYA is composed of representatives from: The Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce, The Town of Farmville, Prince Edward County Tourism, and Farmville Downtown Partnership. In early 2015 they proudly had a LOVEworks sculpture constructed for all citizens and visitors to enjoy and use for taking fun photos. This is the 40th LOVE sculpture of its kind in Virginia, and we certainly think it is the BEST! Farmville’s sculpture depicts the High Bridge, which was the site of one of the last battles of the American Civil War, with trains from both the Union and Confederacy poised on its tracks. It includes an inlaid 1918 Sanborn Fire Insurance map reproduction of downtown Farmville. It was constructed of locally hewn and crafted materials and assembled on site.
THE LAST STAND: e Civil War Comes to Farmville Our LOVEworks sculpture in Downtown Farmville, located just off the High Bridge Trail, beside Green Front Furniture’s Building #10 on Main Street.
Before Appomattox, there was Farmville. Still reeling from the Battle of Sailor’s Creek, General Robert E. Lee and his men in gray moved westward to this town in the Heart of Virginia to be ready for a last stand against the forces of General Ulysses S. Grant.
LOVEWORKS
The Last Stand: The Civil War Comes to Farmville transported all who attend the Sesquicentennial event in March, 2015, back to that day in 1865 when soldiers from both sides of the conflict converged on this south central Virginia town en route to the final surrender. We met Generals Lee and Grant and the men who fought in Blue and Gray. A walking tour of sites central to this pivotal day between High Bridge and Appomattox was rolled out for the first time. Then there were the women who survived the valiant last days as they buried their dead in the Confederate Cemetery.
