WELCOME

WELCOME FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT The Grayslake Chamber of Commerce extends a warm welcome to everyone. The Chamber, founded in 1950, continues to be a driving force throughout the community. Whereas most chambers’ sole focus is on business growth and development, the Grayslake Chamber, in addition, is the premier civic organization in town, sponsoring various events such as the Craft Beer Fest, Arts Festival, 5K Fun Run, Business Trick-or-Treating, the Annual Tree Lighting ceremony, and of course, Summer Days. Not only is this good for our businesses, but it also spreads goodwill and fosters a community’s spirit unlike any in Lake County. The Chamber of Commerce provides its members with many benefits and business services. These include joint advertising programs, sponsorships, newsletters, customer referrals, informational

membership meetings, seminars targeted to specific needs of the business owner and many opportunities to network and make new contacts and relationships. The Chamber is also very active in local, state and federal issues regarding business. The Grayslake Chamber continues to grow and prosper, with membership of more than 210. The Chamber enjoys excellent working relationships with the village, economic development commission, park district, township and schools. We all work together for the betterment of the community. Please visit www.grayslakechamber.com or call (847) 223-6888 for additional information about the community, its businesses or how the Chamber can help your business grow.

WELCOME FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Located in the heart of Lake County, the community of Grayslake, with its unique blend of old and new, is an ideal place to live and work. In this guide, you will find a business directory with both alphabetical and categorical lists of Chamber members who represent the excellent service providers and retail establishments available to you in the Grayslake area.

We hope you will patronize those businesses whose Chamber of Commerce membership reflects their strong commitment to serving the Grayslake community. We also hope you will find this guide to be a useful reference.

Heritage Center exhibits highlight architecture, cars

T

he Grayslake Heritage Center, 164 Hawley St., is becoming well known for assembling and displaying a wide variety of fascinating exhibits on aspects of Grayslake history, ranging from local baseball players over the years, to Grayslake’s part in the Civil War, to the community’s growth through the eyes of a resident. This summer yet another pair of exhibits will be added to the list, to the delight of local residents who are enjoying them and their supporting programs, said David Oberg, executive director of the Grayslake Heritage Center. The second floor of the Heritage Center currently features Constructing a Community, an exhibit that highlights Grayslake’s historic architecture. Eighteen structures (homes, businesses and public buildings) of varying architectural styles are presented through historic photos, current photos and detail shots. “Constructing a Community provides a tangible link between past and present and recalls important structures, some now vanished and some still with us. Many are fine examples of distinct architectural styles, while others, though common, tell important stories,” Oberg said. They include the Grayslake Hotel, the Merchants and Farmers Bank, the Carmi Read Building and the Classical Revival home of Dr. John Palmer. “John Walton and Orlando Richardson built the Grayslake Hotel in 1889. The hotel’s dining room served as one of the community’s

earliest dining spots,” said Charlotte Renehan, museum archivist and president of the Grayslake Historical Society. “The building later served as a drug store and grocery store. Though it has been dramatically altered, some of the original Italianate architectural details survive, as well as some of the ornamental pressed tin ceilings in the interior.” When it was first built, the Grayslake Hotel was a textbook example of Commercial Italianate architecture. The hipped roof, with decorative paired brackets drew the eye up to a “widow’s walk,” a platform on the roof with an iron grille or rail. The hipped roof and brackets have survived modernization, but the porch and widow’s walk are gone today. The Merchants and Farmers Bank, built in 1900 at 201 Center St., was the first bank building in Grayslake. It was also home to the Grayslake post office for a time. In later years, a series of restaurants operated there. The building has been replaced by the Centennial Plaza. The bank was built in the Queen Anne style with a hint of Chateau influence. Both styles were popular in the 19th century and remained popular for commercial applications well into the early 20th century. A rather ornate structure, it featured fancy brackets, a suggested cross gable with low relief sculpture and contrasting texture. Carmi Read began work on his agricultural implement and hardware building in 1890. The upper floor served as a community

center – used for dances, town meetings and even church services. In fact, the community’s first election took place there in 1895, when the village incorporated and George Thomson was elected mayor. It was moved to the southwest corner of Lake and Harvey streets in 1911. Over time, the Read building has changed significantly. Originally, it had paired brackets under the eaves, a suggested pediment and an ornate front porch. Today, the building is unassuming, but it played an important role in Grayslake’s history. Finally, there is the home of Dr. John Palmer, built in 1904 at 18 S. Lake St. It is Grayslake’s only example of Classical Revival architecture and it is also featured in the exhibit. The enclosed porch was once a porte-cochere for carriages. The carriage house to the rear was where “Doc” Hildebrandt, the local pharmacist, bottled Coca-Cola. The Palmer House has many elements typical of the Classical Revival style including an Ionic temple portico with dentil detailing on the pediment. Also displayed in the exhibit are hand tools of the day, which would have been used during the construction process, letters removed from the exterior of the former Lakeview School and architectural elements from Grayslake buildings including a bracket from the Last Chance Saloon. Children visiting the exhibit will have the opportunity to draw pictures of their own houses and affix them to a large map of the community and to construct some buildings using Lego blocks, said Linda Willhite, museum volunteer. In addition, there are supporting programs. Renehan presented a program on the moving of buildings in Grayslake. An architectural

scavenger hunt will be distributed at the annual Grayslake Arts Festival with the deadline for submitting it several weeks afterward. Meanwhile, the main level of the Heritage Center features an exhibit on Grayslake transportation through the years, specifically local roads, car dealerships and service garages. It features information on historic roads through the area, including Route 120 which was once known as Old Plank Road. The histories of old service garages like Cheeseman and Behning, as well as those run by the three sons of William Brandstetter (Irving, George and Fay), are pictured and detailed. “The father owned a saloon but the sons ventured into cars. In fact, they opened competing gas stations – one of which was called Brandy’s Korner,” Renehan said. Grayslake’s former car dealerships – Rockenbach Chevrolet and Mount and White Ford – are also included, as is a hands-on exhibit where children can pretend to service an automobile. A photo wall, featuring reminiscences from current Grayslake residents of all ages about their first cars, has also been produced. Those interviewed range from teenagers to 90-year-olds because everyone remembers their first car. Supporting programs for this exhibit will include a modified road rally for the public and, on Aug. 28, a model car show. In addition, local resident John Smiskol will present a program reminiscing about his years as an overland racing driver. For more information about the exhibits and the Grayslake Heritage Center, visit www.villageofgrayslake.com and look for the Grayslake Heritage Center and History Museum button or call (847) 543-1745. The district is governed by a Board of Trustees and levies taxes separately from the Village. The department operates out of three fire stations and employs 68 personnel. Of these, 40 are full time and 28 are part time. Staff consists of 55 licensed paramedics and 11 licensed emergency medical technicians. Full-time positions include a Chief, Deputy Chief, Division Chief of Training, three Battalion Chiefs, nine Lieutenants, two Fire Inspectors, 22 Firefighter/Paramedics, and an Administrative Assistant. The three fire stations are located to provide efficient response times. A fire station is located within 1½ miles of 90 percent of district residents. In 2015, the fire department responded to 3,700 emergency calls for service. The Grayslake Fire Department provides many services to the public. The most obvious are fire suppression and emergency medical services. Other duties include water rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, below ground rescue, high angle rescue, structural collapse response, confined space rescue and search and rescue. The Fire Prevention Bureau administers fire prevention and public education. Responsibilities include fire safety inspections, building plan review, fire safety education, fire station tours and fire investigation and reporting. CPR classes are held in cooperation with the Grayslake Park District. Grayslake also participates in the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System to provide or receive cooperative assistance to incidents throughout the surrounding counties. In the event of a disaster, this system could provide countless resources to the community.

Grayslake police personnel number 31 sworn officers, six part-time sworn officers, two community service officers and one records/administration civilian. Department divisions include patrol, investigations, and records/ administration. Other components and assignments include two high school resource officers, two DARE officers, field training officers, traffic officers, bicycle patrol officers and evidence technicians. The department invests in the latest technologies and shares resources with numerous agencies and task forces for the prevention and suppression of area drug and gang activities, swat/riot response, major crime investigation and emergency communications. The Grayslake Police Department, part of the village-wide Request-for-Service System, is committed to the concepts of community policing and problem solving and continually solicits input from the community to better target police services. Butera is expected to open late in 2016 and fill a major void in Grayslake, which currently only has one grocery store to serve a population of more than 20,000 residents. He also facilitated the sale of the other retail center at 100 S. Atkinson from bank ownership into private hands for redevelopment. Stewart has also been paying close attention to the shopping center at Route 120 and Atkinson Road that Jewel-Osco now anchors. He has been working with the owners to fill the vacancies created there when a fitness facility and a Hallmark store recently moved on. “There is also a five-acre parcel of raw land directly across the street with another nine-acre parcel of raw land next to it, both

he economy of Grayslake is evolving as this portion of Lake County grows and develops and the local infrastructure improves, making access to the community easier. The Grayslake Business Partnership, a nonprofit, public-private initiative led by Managing Director Michael Stewart, continues its work to attract businesses to the village, particularly to the large parcels of vacant land and the larger building vacancies. “We don’t do a lot of work on the small in-fill spaces. The market will take care of those. The Partnership concentrates on the larger projects that can significantly move the needle for Grayslake and its residents,” Stewart said. Over the past year, for instance, he negotiated an incentive package to attract Butera Market to a 30,000-square-foot vacant

with frontage to Route 120. We are hoping that we can package those 14 acres in order to interest a banquet facility, restaurant or more retail since the traffic count is great and there is already complimentary retail across the street,” he said. The former Lake County Fairgrounds property may be seeing some developer interest soon, as well, thanks to a change in thought process by the Partnership and the village board. “We shopped the 100-acre former fairgrounds to the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) members because everyone here viewed it as a retail site. But the feedback we got from ICSC, combined with our own feasibility and market studies, indicate that in today’s world, no one wants that much land for retail,” Stewart said. “So now we are marketing it as one-third residential, one-third

office/medical and only the 40 acres fronting along Routes 45 and 120 will be marketed as retail space.” “We see this as a significant move and we hope that it will give us the opportunity to get development started there serving retail, office, medical and residential needs,” he added. Across the street from the former fairgrounds the new 79,000-square-foot Journey Senior Living facility is due to open this fall. It will offer 96 independent living units, 68 assisted living units and 28 memory care beds, as well as dining areas, therapy rooms, activity rooms and libraries, designed for active senior residents needing various levels of care. The facility is expected to employ 75 people. Industrial/distribution recruitment has also been proceeding well,

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Stewart reported. Saia Trucking has constructed its new Lake County freight terminal in Grayslake at the intersection of Peterson and Midlothian Roads. The 50,000 square-foot, $10 million trucking center, with its 100 doors, opened in March. It is buffered by six acres of green space and native plants and trees on a berm. Fifty-eight employees have already been hired and Saia expects that to increase to more than 100 new employees within a year, Stewart said. The long-stalled Cornerstone development at Route 83 and Peterson Road may also be seeing new life soon. The partnership and the village are in ongoing negotiations with the developer who

has owned the 300-acre parcel for 30 years and actually tried to develop it right before the economic downturn almost a decade ago. “We have re-engaged with them over the past two years,” Stewart said, “and we are hoping that something will get started there soon. That is the largest ‘greenfields’ parcel in Lake County that is zoned for industrial development and it is certainly the future of economic development in Grayslake.” In fact, he added, Lake County even widened Peterson Road to four lanes recently in anticipation of the industrial development that is expected along Peterson Road in Grayslake, Mundelein and

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Libertyville over the next decade. Between the three communities, there are 700 acres of undeveloped land along Peterson Road that is ready for industrial development “and the County and Grayslake had the foresight to get ahead of that growth and put the infrastructure in place in advance.” For this same reason, the Partnership and Grayslake public officials support the extension of Route 53 which is being studied and debated within the county. Its construction would have a significant impact on retailers, industries and residents in Grayslake, making it much easier to get to and from Grayslake and significantly relieving the current traffic congestion in the area.

espite the gridlock in Springfield that has prevented local entities like park districts from getting state grants for improvements to their facilities, the Grayslake Community Park District (GPD) has plowed ahead with its capital improvement plans by using the proceeds from a refinancing of debt that they completed in 2014. “During the past year we have made approximately $900,000 in capital improvements to our Grayslake Park District properties and facilities without getting any state or federal funds and I believe that is noteworthy,” said Jeff Nehila, executive director. “We hit our goals, despite the challenges. We replaced the playground, basketball court and tennis court at Meadowview Woods Park; resurfaced the paved trails at Lexington Woods and School Trail Park which residents use for biking, running and walking; added an irrigation system to the newest 20 acres at Alleghany Park on the south end of Grayslake so that we can water our turf; and added a storm sewer system to that same park,” he explained. “We will continue to do even more in the future to enhance our parks for our residents,” Nehila added. “For instance, we plan to replace the playground at Tooterville Park in the spring of 2017 and will irrigate the next 30 acres at Allegheny Park, too.” In addition to these capital improvements, GPD staff is working industriously to expand programming, particularly for youth and for senior citizens. “The popularity of our day trip program has just exploded. We take our active adults, many of whom are seniors, to shows, exhibits, festivals, meals and much more,” he said. “For instance, we have taken them to everything from cruises on Lake Geneva, to casinos, to Germanfest in Milwaukee, to Cubs games.” The park district also offers extended trips of up to a week, embarking for such destinations as San Antonio, Texas and Pennsylvania. G R AY S L A K E PA R K D I S T R I C T “These programs are going gangbusters,” Nehila said. Enrollment in youth sports programming has also skyrocketed. Their travel programs in softball, volleyball and basketball, for both boys and girls, has become a very popular choice for children in the region because of its reputation as an affordable and reputable program, Nehila said. The nine-hole, par-3 golf course is another popular offering. “I like to say that when you play our course, you get nine shots at a hole-in-one every time you play,” he said. Nehila said more outings and events are being booked for the course every season including “best ball” tournaments and regular leagues. The park district is also bringing the facility to the attention of the public by planning special events which attract distinct

constituencies. For instance, an evening of golf, followed by wine sampling at the clubhouse, is an appealing event to many. Special events around the GPD’s 33 parks abound throughout the year. This year the park district held its second annual George Weinert Fishing Derby in memory of a dedicated park district commissioner who passed away. In addition, they periodically hold movies in the park and in late June annually hold their one-day Family Picnic featuring carnival rides, bands, food and fireworks. “It is never a bad time to get out and enjoy our local parks and programs,” he added. rayslake’s young people are privileged to be educated by Community Consolidated School District 46 with its eight schools serving early childhood, elementary and middle school students, and then by Grayslake Community High School District 127, which serves students from eight different villages at both Grayslake North and Grayslake Central High Schools. Both high schools were included on the Washington Post’s High School Challenge list of top schools in the nation. Grayslake Central ranked 26th and Grayslake North ranked 33rd on the list among recognized Illinois public high schools. Both schools were also included on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best High Schools, said Tracey Landry, director of curriculum and instruction. The district overall was ranked 60th in the state by Niche, an online resource which ranks schools based on published report cards, as well as surveys completed by students and parents. It also bears noting that Grayslake North’s principal, Dr. James Roscoe, was named Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principal Association’s Lake County Division. “Approximately 85 percent of our students go to college immediately after graduation and that number climbs to over 90 percent one year after graduation,” Landry said. “We are also well known for our advanced placement courses. We offer 23 different AP courses, across all available subjects, and our students perform very well nationally. Our repeatedly high rankings in the Washington Post are indicative of how well our students do.” During the 2016-17 academic year, District 127 will move to a onefor-one model with Chromebooks. Every freshman and sophomore will be issued a Chromebook for classwork. This has been gradually phased in over the past several years so both faculty and students are already

$100

comfortable with the technology, Landry said. Several new courses will also be offered at both high schools starting in the fall. German language will be offered in additional to Spanish and French. Two new advanced placement courses – AP Computer Science and AP World History – will also be offered for the first time. Finally, an innovative math course called Advanced Math Decision-making will be taught. Students in this class will be taught how to solve real-life action problems, using the math principles they have learned over their academic career. Much of the work will be done in groups. An established course that is unique to District 127 is the Exploring World Cultures class. Second semester seniors from both high schools meet in person and online on Sundays to learn about a particular country in depth and then they travel to that country at the end of the semester. It is team-taught by foods, science, social studies and other faculty members. This summer 35 students traveled to Japan, Landry noted. In previous years, groups have visited China, Australia, New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands, to name a few. The school district also has a robust special education program. The Instructional Reading class gives intensive support, for instance, to students who are reading well below their grade level. Last school year they piqued the students’ interest by having them write and illustrate books geared to kindergarteners. They then visited a local school where they read their books to the students and gained both confidence and leadership skills. In addition, a comfort dog visits their classrooms monthly to listen to them read aloud. The highlight of the year for many of the special education students, however, was the second annual life-skills basketball game that featured students with intellectual and/or physical disabilities from Grayslake Central and North playing a friendly game against students from neighboring Warren Township High School. Players ran through the arch like the varsity players do, enjoyed the cheers of a large crowd of fellow students and parents and even had a disc jockey playing music and cheerleaders leading cheers. It was an incredible experience for everyone involved, and Landry expects it to become an annual event.

ooking after the public interest is a job shared by police and fire departments everywhere. Grayslake is fortunate to be ably served by the Grayslake-Hainesville Police Department and the Grayslake Fire Protection District, led by Chief Phil Perlini and Chief John Christian, respectively. Both entities are continually expanding their services and looking for new and better ways to provide for the needs of residents. POLICE DEPARTMENT The Grayslake-Hainesville Police Department, for instance, is collaborating with other Lake County policing bodies including Mundelein, Libertyville, Gurnee and Round Lake Park in an effort to curb prescription drug abuse which often leads to opiate addiction, according to Perlini. “We got in on the ground floor of this effort, working alongside the Lake County Opiate Task Force,” he said. “We carry Narcan, the overdose antidote, in all of our police cars now and in the last 18 months have brought back three overdose victims.” But the effort does not end there. Anyone who feels that they have a drug addiction problem and decides that they want help can walk into the Grayslake Police Department, 10 S. Seymour Ave., or approach an officer and ask for help. “We will immediately find a counselor to assess them and then work to get them help through the Lake County Department of Public Health. An officer will sit with them until help arrives or we will immediately transport them to a hospital or Gateway, depending on the situation,” he added. “We realize that the likelihood of a drug user walking into the police station and asking for help is low, but we also go along with the fire department on calls and can offer assistance then. If we can get one person turned around, the effort will have been worth it,” Perlini said. GRAYSLAKE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Residents can assist by disposing of their unused prescription drugs and old syringes in the approved containers in the police department’s lobby, keeping them out of the hands of those who might by using or experimenting with drugs. Perlini is also proud of the department’s Police Explorer program for young people, ages 14 to 21. It is a joint program with the Lindenhurst Police Department and is a highly-structured program designed to introduce interested young people to the world of law enforcement. The program currently has approximately 15 young people enrolled. The Explorers are paired with police officers at events like fireworks displays, parades and other high-traffic events, Perlini said. In addition to policing Grayslake and Hainesville, Perlini said that the department participates with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and other area police departments in the Metropolitan Drug and Gang Crimes Task Force, the Major Crash Assistance Teams (MCAT) and the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System’s Mobile Field Force for civil disturbances and the Emergency Services Team, which is essentially a SWAT team.

FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT The Grayslake Fire Protection District’s 40 full-time and 28 part-time firefighters provide life and property-saving services to not only district residents, but also to all of Lake County and northern Illinois by spending hours getting specialized training and then taking part in regional teams, made up of representatives from many departments. For instance, six Grayslake specialist firefighters are also certified public safety divers, trained to execute rescue and recovery efforts in both water and on ice, according to Christian. They are part of the Lake County Water Rescue Team, which handles calls from Lake Michigan west to the Chain O’ Lakes. “We have many bodies of water in Grayslake and in Lake County, so we need highly-trained divers available year-round,” Christian said. “All fire district personnel are trained to an operation level.” Two other specialist firefighters have been trained to fight brush and forest fires and are part of the wild land firefighting team, which was formed a decade ago using a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. It can be deployed to other areas of the state when needed. All firefighters are trained to fight wildfires but this team is more comprehensive. However, the department responds to these fires when called, regardless of whether the speGRAYSLAKE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

ILGRACW16 design.indd 30

cialized team members are on duty or not. “The Wild Land Firefighting Team is a tactical team that is trained to be sensitive to the environment at the same time that they work to save people and structures,” Christian said. Another specialized team that six Grayslake firefighters at the specialist rank have joined is the hazardous materials team. They are called out when there is a hazardous material spill or leak from a truck or a train car, as well as when there is a chlorine leak at a swimming pool or a problem at a manufacturing plant. This team could also respond if a suspicious powder is found. Next, there is the Technical Rescue Team which responds to incidents in a high-rise building or a confined space like a trench or structure collapse. Four Grayslake firefighters are specially trained for this type of rescue. Finally, one Grayslake specialist firefighter is a member of the Illinois Urban Search and Rescue Team which goes into any catastrophic situation where they are needed including the aftermath of major weather events and terrorist attacks. “We have a very close relationship with our neighboring departments and our firefighters train and work together regularly, so we have a large group that can respond when needed,” Christian said.

For more information, visit grayslake.nm.org. HEALTH CARE The Northwestern Medicine Grayslake Outpatient Center has seen constant growth at its 300,000-plus-square-foot “hospital without beds” on more than 50 acres at 1475 E. Belvidere Rd. since 2004, said Marsha Oberrieder, senior vice president of operations at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. The facility currently features a free-standing emergency center that accepts ambulances; physician offices; outpatient cardiology testing; a fully-functional outpatient laboratory; rehabilitation services including audiology testing and physical, occupational and speech therapies; an ambulatory surgery center; a comprehensive cancer center that offers radiation therapy, chemotherapy and infusion treatments; and a full radiology center offering MRIs, CT scans, diagnostic radiology, ultrasound, digital mammography,

Originally the bureau was formed to help farmers improve their production practices. Today’s bureau serves both rural and urban people who are interested in production of a plentiful and safe food supply. The Farm Bureau is a voice for farmers and those with a vested interest in agriculture. Nationally, the organization boasts 4 million families. The Farm Bureau’s goal is to maintain an organization through which rural and urban people can think, act, and work together to strengthen agriculture’s role and influence. It exists to provide programs and services for each and every member. The bureau also offers AG in the Classroom programs to area schools and has presenters available for business, church and civic meetings.
