History of GURNEE

arly settlers in the Gurnee area came by foot, horseback and by “Prairie Schooners” drawn by oxen or via the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes. They came from the town of Warren, New York, which was named in honor of Major Joseph Warren, killed in the battle of Bunker Hill. Warren Township, formed in 1850 was also named after him. The first settlement of Warren Township commenced in 1835 in the vicinity of the Aux Plaines River (Now the DesPlaines River). In 1835-36, a land company from New York State erected a Community House (site of the old Gurnee Grade School) to accommodate families while they were locating and getting government grants to their farms. Near the Community House, there was a ford used by the Potowatomi Indians for crossing the river. A floating log bridge was built there in 1842. Later, a stationary wood bridge was constructed, and still later an iron bridge was erected. With the permanent bridge, roads were established and the area

became the township hub. It was at this junction that the Milwaukee Road crossed the river from east to west, and then continued north to eventually connect Chicago to Milwaukee. The hamlet was originally called “Wentworth” after Congressman John Wentworth, who also served as Mayor of Chicago from 1857 to 1863. Walter S. Gurnee, the 14th mayor of Chicago and one of the directors of the railroad, agreed to develop a station in Wentworth, which was called “Gurnee Station” in honor of Gurnee. Over time, Gurnee Station became simply known as Gurnee. Gurnee’s population is well over 31,000 residents in about 13.5 square mile area. Founded in 1928, Gurnee is now celebrating 90 years as a village. Gurnee also celebrates its 200th anniversary in the State of Illinois Admission to the Union, which was on Dec. 3, 1818. A complete history, with pictures of Gurnee will soon be available on our website in June.

Chamber WELCOME

elcome residents and visitors to the ninth annual Village of Gurnee Community Guide. This guide is brought to you by The Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Town Square Publications, a division of Daily Herald Media Group. A great deal of time and effort goes into this guide, and I want to especially thank our Chamber members, the Village of Gurnee staff and elected officials as well as our schools, clubs and organizations that help pull all the content together. Most importantly it could not be done without the efforts of the Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce’s executive director and board members. We collectively put a lot of time and effort bringing you this 2018-2019 edition of the community guide. As you peruse it, please keep in mind we are open to suggestions for how we can better serve our Chamber members, residents and visitors referencing the guide. We encourage longtime residents and visitors alike to browse the guide to get updates on the village and local businesses. In it you will find featured articles and advertisements from your local businesses. Use this guide as a handy reference to village and township services, schools and volunteer groups and organizations in and around Gurnee. Please pay special attention to the Chamber members and advertisers that make Gurnee the great community that it is. Once you go through the guide, I am sure you will agree with me that Gurnee is a great place to live and do business. In this issue, we have expanded our Hometown Profiles feature to five Chamber member articles, further emphasizing the Gurnee’s Got It theme. Take some time to read about successful businesses that make Gurnee a great community for residents and visitors. Check out Fore See Electric, operating in and around Gurnee since 1977. You can count on Craig Leafblad’s team of electricians for residential and industrial electrical services. Honey Orthodontics offers state-of-the-art orthodontic treatment for all ages. Dr. Ona Honey is also very involved in our community. Anthony Buick GMC has been a staple in Gurnee since 1991. Tony Augelli’s dealership excels in customer satisfaction. Doggy day care is provided by Central Bark of Gurnee, offering trusted personal and individual attention to your special four-legged friends. We ship everything nowadays, and Bubblefast provides the most cost effective shipping supplies. See Mark and Robin Le Vine for all your shipping needs. In this year’s Economic Development feature, Village of Gurnee Economic Development Director Ellen Dean explains what makes Gurnee the Village of Opportunity, and shares information about

exciting new developments in the village. Ellen keeps tabs on all things going on in Gurnee to keep it thriving. I would also like to thank her for taking the time to join us at many Chamber board meetings to keep the connection going between the village and Chamber board. Please visit the Gurnee Chamber website, www. gurneechamber.com. You will find all of our members and links to their websites very easily. We advise residents and visitors to check it regularly for upcoming events and announcements from our members. A note to our members: Please check your listing, and keep in mind we can link to your site (if provided the information). You can also create login credentials to access your own listing on the Chamber site to add and update information. The more you use the Chamber website, the more we get upgraded on searches so all our members may get more exposure. Follow Village of Gurnee Chamber on Facebook for updates on upcoming events by the chamber, shared information on other village events and member postings on what’s happening with them. Generally, the site has something new every day or two, and as always, the more information our members provide, the more we will put out there. Sign up for our Constant Contact to get the latest Chamber news delivered to your email inbox. The Chamber board is an all-volunteer group of dedicated individuals that give up their spare time to do all possible to encourage and promote business in Gurnee. To that end, we are always looking for ideas on how we can better serve the interests of our members, as well as residents and visitors. We can only be as good as your participation. Please feel free to drop us an email if you have suggestions for events, programs or speakers. Your input is welcome and will be considered by the board. We are always in need of chairmen to assist the board in planning events, obtaining speakers and so on. If you are interested in getting involved, let us know. To my board, thank you all. It’s a pleasure to serve with you. The meetings are well attended and the participation is incredible. Let’s continue to move forward. Sincerely,

Dan Kloczkowski Dan “Kay” Kloczkowski Chairman of the Board

Mayor’s WELCOME

G

12

urnee is a wonderful community to raise a family, work, shop or play. Although Gurnee has grown from a rural farming community in to a regional economic center, we have been able to maintain the small town feel while offering world class shopping and entertainment options. Part of what allows us to maintain our community feel is a strong sense of ownership from our residents, business owners, intergovernmental partners and civic organizations. By working together, we have been able to shape Gurnee in to a community that is economically competitive while still feeling like a home for all of us. The economic health of Gurnee is directly tied to the success of our business community and their ability to remain competitive in a changing environment. The Village of Gurnee is committed to supporting our business community by making strategic investments in infrastructure and capital. In the upcoming year, the village will embark on our largest capital investment program in Gurnee’s 90 year history. The plan for 2018/2019 includes $11.7 million in investment in capital infrastructure and equipment. A significant investment is being made in building a new two million gallon capacity water tower along Knowles Road. This new water tower will increase water pressure and reliability for residents and businesses on the west side of the village and will provide additional reserves for all water users in the event of an emergency supply interruption. Preservation efforts are at the heart of many of our operations. Whether keeping our neighborhoods safe or ensuring that our roads are adequately maintained, the village continues to excel. The village is very cognizant

of managing costs and tax dollars judiciously and introduced several new programs that will save our residents money or streamline operations the last few years. Our police, fire and public works departments are at the forefront in their individual fields and have been repeatedly recognized for their excellence and quality of service. We deliver these services in the most cost-effective manner possible, which allows the village to operate without levying a property tax. We are one of the few communities in Illinois that do not levy a property tax to finance services, and are in our 18th year of this practice. We continuously strive to advance our services in response to the needs of residents, visitors and businesses. If you want to stay connected with the latest projects and news, we have multiple ways to keep you engaged through our website, e-Blasts, NextDoor, Facebook, Twitter and the traditional quarterly newsletter. Whether you are a resident, business owner or visitor, there is much to be proud of in Gurnee. Please do not hesitate to contact the village of Gurnee or the Gurnee Chamber of Commerce if you should ever need any assistance, and thank you to everyone who helps to keep our community great. Sincerely,

Kristina Kovarik Kristina Kovarik Mayor

With the enhanced website, our strong community focus and close involvement with the Village of Gurnee, we will work on initiatives that will help members of our Chamber prosper.

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP Legislative advocacy The Chamber is the “voice of business” ensuring that the needs of members and their views on important issues are communicated to local, state and national legislators. Advertising & marketing opportunities One of the many ways the Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce helps business succeed is by providing numerous opportunities for our members to market to business and consumers alike. Professional development Members can take part in several programs and seminars that allow them to grow and develop new skills. Networking The opportunity to make acquaintances that can turn into business relationships is always a vital component of Chamber membership. How can my business play a leadership role in the Gurnee area’s economic, civic and social life?  Join the Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is the best way to continue building a strong business community that works together to achieve results.  Support Village of Gurnee Chamber Commerce members. Do business with them when you need their products and services. Always “Think Gurnee Chamber First.”  Participate in Chamber-sponsored events. These events build a sense of community among businesses, residents and visitors. You can participate by:

VALUE OF JOINING A CHAMBER The American Chamber of Commerce executives with support from Small Business Network, Inc., designed a study to determine the real value to companies in terms of consumer outcomes of joining and being active in their local chamber of commerce. Do consumers really support businesses because they are chamber members? A sampling of the results proves their case: Most consumers (59 percent) think being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. It is 29 percent more effective, however, for communicating to consumers that a company uses good business practices and 26 percent more effective for communicating that a business is reputable. If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., sits on the chamber board), consumers are 12 percent more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition. When consumers thinks a company’s products stack up better against the competition because the company is highly involved in its local chamber of commerce, it is because they infer the company is trustworthy, involved in the community and is an industry leader. When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40 percent more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months. When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43 percent more likely to consider buying insurance from it. When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44 percent more likely to think favorably of it and 63 percent more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future.

ost residents of Gurnee clearly recall exactly why they first moved to Gurnee: They were looking for a safe, family friendly community, with wonderful amenities, especially Grade A schools, beautiful parks and recreational facilities, and a great location – easy to get anywhere. Sound familiar? Gurnee’s 23 million annual visitors keep coming back year after year for fun and family time: Gurnee offers the Midwest’s premier entertainment at Six Flags Great America/Hurricane Harbor and the best cluster of shopping and dining anywhere in the area, anchored by Gurnee Mills. It’s all here, for a quick shopping trip, a day visit, a weekend or a week. Businesses are drawn by many of those same amenities; residents and visitors are their employees and customers. In addition, Gurnee’s fiscal stability means that business’ costs will remain competitive and predictable; the Village of Gurnee has not levied a property tax since the year 2000. Public services are highly reliable; critical infrastructure is modern and well-maintained. Our local economy is strong. Economic development is about preserving this foundation while seeking new opportunities to diversify Gurnee’s revenues and employment base. Revenues generated by retail sales and tourism help to fund infrastructure (roads, sewer, water) and approximately half of all village operations, including police, fire, and public works. The village receives 2 percent of each retail shopping dollar and 3 percent of each dining dollar spent in town. When you shop or dine in Gurnee, you are making a direct investment in our future! Skilled manufacturing and corporate offices generate property taxes that support our schools, parks, library and other non-village services. These companies also provide high quality jobs for Gurnee residents. Over 94 percent of Gurnee residents ages 25 and over are high school graduates, and 47 percent hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. With an educated workforce, central location and proximity to world-class research laboratories and

23 educational institutions, Gurnee is well-positioned to continue attracting innovative, high-tech companies. A key goal articulated by many residents over the years has been the revitalization of East Grand Avenue. The village kicked off a “clean up and green up” initiative last year with installation of new landscape plantings to soften and beautify the corridor; many of the beautiful plants were supplied locally. UHaul has reopened for moving truck rental, with plans to renovate into a climate-controlled self- storage facility. Plans are in the works for a fun family event on East Grand in 2018; stay tuned! Please remember to support our East Grand Avenue businesses, and keep them on your shopping “loop.” We’re all in this together! Independent businesses are vital to maintaining the hometown feel of Gurnee. Follow us on Facebook to keep up with the goings-on of independent Gurnee businesses, including many of the local restaurants

listed in the Independent Restaurant Guide on page 11. Whenever you’re looking for local places to shop or dine, we encourage you to search the Gurnee Business Directory on the village’s website or the Gurnee Chamber of Commerce website. Remember to nominate your favorite Gurnee businesses for the “Best of Gurnee” awards which are presented by Mayor Kovarik each spring and fall to businesses that exemplify Gurnee’s hometown spirit and generosity! We invite you to visit the village’s business page at www.gurnee.il.us/ business. To keep tabs on what’s new in Gurnee, check out the monthly Projects in Progress report featuring current development projects and new businesses. Please don’t hesitate to contact the village’s economic development division at (847) 599-7574 or edean@village.gurnee.il.us. We want to hear from you!

Family- owned and operated since 1977, Fore See Electric provides quality work; finishing on time and on budget. Whether doing a remodel or a new build, Fore See can do all of the wiring and re-wiring, indoor and outdoor lighting, service upgrades, panel replacements, generator installations and media wiring. With their business split 50/50 between commercial and residential, Fore See Electric has the experience and knowledge that is required for any electrical project. No job is too big or too small. Specialties include room additions, kitchen and bath remodels, basement finishing and home improvement. The company offers discounts to veterans and senior citizens. “When my father started the company in 1977, Gurnee was a much smaller community,” said owner Craig Leafblad. “Over the years, we have shown that we are a company that you can turn to when needed, to get a job done and done right.” One company that turned to Fore See Electric was Quality Catering, a business that has a mission to “promote proper child development and lifelong healthful eating habits through meal catering, nutrition education and support for healthy eating.” “Our work for Quality Catering was important not only for what their company is doing for kids, but also for what it showed the community,” Leafblad said. “We are a small company that does big work.”

H

Fore See Electric has been an integral part of the Gurnee business community for 41 years, having done electrical work for many Gurnee community buildings, including the fire department, police department, park district and the public works building. Fore See Electric has been an active member of the Gurnee Chamber of Commerce for the past three years. “We joined the Gurnee Chamber of Commerce to be more connected with the community and to participate in more community events,” Leafblad said. “Our membership has given us much more exposure, not only to the business community, but also to the people of Gurnee.” Participation in the community has included sports teams sponsorships, as well as the annual “touch a truck” event. Fore See Electric also supports the Equestrian Connection, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, the Allendale Association and the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train, to name a few. Leafblad has spent his entire life in Gurnee serving the people in his community. He believes that although Gurnee is much larger than it was when he started, it still has a neighborly feel. He knows many of his customers because they have been with him for many years. “Our customers know that they can trust us to do the work.” Leafbald said. “We take pride in having a clean slate for over 40 years.” Fore See Electric is there when needed. The experienced staff is dedicated to providing each customer with quality service at a competitive price. For more information, visit www.foresee-electric.com.

BUBBLEFAST, LLC

ubblefast, LLC is a Gurnee family business providing highquality shipping supplies to local and online communities since 1999. Owners Mark and Robin Le Vine started Bubblefast as a home-based business operating from their garage. The company began with the sale of a single roll of bubble cushioning on eBay. With the rise of popularity of selling wares online on sites like eBay, the Le Vines saw the need for a friendly, reliable supplier of reasonably priced shipping supplies. They developed a relationship with a bubble cushioning provider and with the sale of that one product, Bubblefast was born. The business grew quickly, and when semi-trucks started delivering loads of supplies to their home, the Le Vines realized they needed to find a larger site for their business. The company has a warehouse at 101 Ambrogio (Unit K) in Gurnee, as well as distribution sites in California and Ontario, Canada. Bubblefast is a one-stop shop for all packing, moving and shipping

supplies. Whether you need boxes, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, tape, foam rolls, poly bags, any kind of mailing envelope or creative ideas for how to best pack your specific item, Bubblefast will help you choose the right items for the job. Bubblefast also sells on a variety of online platforms, including the company website, www.bubblefast. com, and offers thousands of solutions for all kinds of packing challenges. The Bubblefast website also features a free beginner’s guide to selling on Amazon. Mark and Robin are also e-commerce experts, are members of a national online selling community and are co-organizers of an annual e-commerce conference in Elk Grove Village (eCom Chicago). Call or stop by to ask them about eCom Chicago or bounce your shipping or e-commerce questions off of them. And if you happen to have any reindeer that need packing, Bubblefast has you covered. Six Flags GREAT AMERICA G 30

NEW COASTER DEBUTS

urnee residents don’t have to go far for thrills and all-day entertainment. Six Flags Great America offers a full calendar of fun in addition to rides for all ages, dining, shopping, live entertainment and educational events. Great America’s summer season runs through Labor Day weekend. New this year is Mardi Gras Hangover, the park’s 16th roller coaster and the “world’s largest” loop coaster. Riders sit back-to-back and face-to-face as they travel forward and backward on a 100-foot loop before being suspended upside down for an extended hang time. In keeping with the Mardi Gras theme, Great America also will debut a Mardi Gras festival in late summer 2018 featuring nightly shows, Mardi Gras-style floats, beads, stilt walkers, unique food offerings and fireworks. Other summer highlights include a July 4 festival and Coasters After Dark. Once the park closes for the summer, the fun doesn’t end. Fright Fest, on select days from Sept. 15 through Oct. 28, celebrates the spooky season. Great America is family friendly by day, and once the sun goes down, zombies and ghouls roam the park for terrifying thrills. Haunted houses and “scare zones” throughout the

park add to the ambience. Entertainment includes a synchronized LED light show, and The Ringmaster’s Cabaret, featuring song, dance, illusions and freaky creatures. The year wraps up with Holiday in the Park, Great America’s first holiday festival, running on weekends Nov. 23 through Dec. 23 and daily Dec. 26-31. Guests will enjoy rides, holiday-themed shows, seasonal food and dazzling park décor including more than 1 million LED lights and decorated Christmas trees. In addition, Holiday in the Park will feature a nightly tree-lighting ceremony, brilliant light shows and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. “Six Flags is creating a new season of thrills as the park is transformed into a winter wonderland with a million dazzling lights and all the magical sights, sounds and tastes of the holidays,” said Park President Hank Salemi. “We are excited to extend our operating calendar and make Gurnee the premier place to spend the holiday season.” For more details, visit www.sixflags.com.

Gurnee DISTRICT 56

urnee District 56 continues to demonstrate innovation and creativity to fulfill its commitment to the community to deliver an inspiring education to all children. This year, the district embarked on a three-year program to immerse coding and computer science skills across all discipline areas and decided to begin that program with K-2 students. The teachers have all been amazed with the innate abilities the youngest students have demonstrated in this area and admit they are learning as much from the students as the students are learning from them. As part of its blended learning philosophy, the district will begin

piloting online courses for students next year. As part of the district’s vision statement to place students more in control of what they learn and how they learn it, students will begin to learn more about topics of interest to them through the online courses. The district’s first online course next year will a Spanish class for beginners that will transition students to the formal classes taught in seventh and eighth grades. Also of note is the district’s new Future Ready library at Viking School. The new library symbolizes the innovative spirit of Gurnee District 56.

Woodland School DISTRICT 50

oodland Community Consolidated School District 50 is one of the state’s largest elementary school systems with approximately 5,700 students, yet it takes great pride in providing a small-school comfort level for children in its five Gurnee-area schools. With recent approval of a community-driven strategic plan for 2018-2023, the district created new statements regarding its vision and mission.

 Celebrating Differences More than 40 different languages are spoken at home by our students, and school activities allow the children to learn more about different cultures. Parents are encouraged to participate in our bilingual parent advisory committee as well as help their children by participating in our Latino family literacy programs.

Mission: Woodland District 50 empowers our children to reach their potential by providing exceptional learning experiences that foster critical thinking in a nurturing learning environment.

 1:1 Technology Each child in fourth through eighth grade has a Chromebook personal computer for learning. The 1:1 technology is part of the Woodland Inspires initiative and as Chromebooks are introduced, technology is reallocated to the lower grades. The reallocation of iPads, Macs and laptops is valued at more than $300,000.

Vision: Together, inspiring tomorrow’s creators, thinkers and leaders. What Makes Woodland Special: Smaller class sizes Effective in the 2018-2019 school year, class size goals are as follows: Kindergarten, 15-18 students; first through third grade, 18-21 students; and fourth through eighth grade, 21-24 students. The smaller class sizes are intended to help foster positive relationships between teachers and students, provide more personal attention to students, improve academic achievement and ultimately measure that success.  Dual Language Kindergarten through fifth-grade students enrolled in a dual language program spend half of the day speaking and learning only Spanish and half of the day speaking and learning only English. In the 2018-19 school year, the program is expanding to the middle school.

 Finances For nine of the past 10 years, Woodland received “financial recognition,” the highest designation from the Illinois State Board of Education. The district’s budgets are balanced without sacrificing core program offerings, and its financial credit ratings are among the highest with a AA+ rating by Moody’s Investor Services and a Aa2 rating by Standard & Poor’s Financial Investor Services.  Stay in Touch Follow the district on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ WoodlandDistrict50 and Twitter: @Woodland50News. Educational ROUNDTABLE

roundtable is a discussion between several parties or groups who all take part on equal terms. This definition exemplifies the Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce’s Educational Roundtable. This effective roundtable is composed of the superintendents of each school district in Gurnee along with civic leaders, local clergy and community business owners. Established in 2014, the roundtable’s mission is to serve and improve educational opportunities coupled with business achievement for both students and chamber members. Through the Educational Roundtable, schools now have an opportunity to disseminate information to the business community that can further enhance business involvement and growth. The Roundtable

has used social media to push information to the public covering topics such as the Woodland breakfast program to assisting with the Spanish teacher recruitment. The group has also used “Myth Busters” to spread facts about educational tax dollars and how they are used. Roundtable participants firmly believe there is a great need for the business community to get involved in the community schools. This involvement could be through volunteering as a mentor. All it takes is the business community volunteering to give back 30 minutes a week by mentoring a child in need. The possibilities are endless in what the Educational Roundtable can accomplish in the years to come.
