A Brief History

T

The Madison Township Historical Society was formed in 1964 and remains dedicated to finding, preserving and interpreting the history of Old Bridge Township and the state of New Jersey. The historical society currently operates the Thomas Warne Historical Museum and Library, which is located in a 19th century one-room schoolhouse on a portion of land originally purchased by Thomas Warne, one of the original proprietors of the Raritan Bay Area, in 1682.

he Lenni Lenape Indians are noted as the original settlers of current-day Old Bridge, until the mid-1600s when the Dutch and British began to settle in the area. In 1664 the region came under the control of the English, and by 1682 the boundaries were defined for the newly created Middlesex County. Within the county, South Amboy Township was formed in 1684 and maintained its boundaries until 1869 when a portion was separated in order to establish Madison Township. The name Madison Township remained in use until 1975 when it was changed to the Township of Old Bridge.

For more information on the Madison Township Historical Society and its museum library, visit www.thomas-warnemuseum.com.

Initially, the area was primarily comprised of farms. The Raritan River and Bay were heavily used for water transportation and commercial trading until the arrival of the railroad in the earlyto mid-1800s. In addition to its economic draw, the area was a popular recreational destination and the host of various local outings.

The Cottrell homestead is a landmark in Old Bridge. It was built in 1831 and still stands today on the northeast corner of County Route 516 and Cottrell Road. The Cottrells owned 150 acres of apple orchard that was located across the street from their home. Across from the cold-storage building on the southwest corner of Cottrell Road and Route 516 (where Rite Aid is now located), the family built the New Jersey Apple Growers, Inc. distillery. It was at this distillery that they pressed the apples into cider and distilled the brandy in large vats. The brandy would age in barrels in a government warehouse that was located on the Cottrell’s property. The Cottrell’s produced apple brandy for 20 years on the farm and sold it wholesale to distributors under the name Browntown. 

These attractive features spurred a gradual growth in population, which stood at 1,662 in 1880. Today the town is home to over 70,000 residents and is recognized as the thirdlargest municipality in Middlesex County, one of the largest counties in the state and was named as a contender for the title of one of the best places to live in the United States by Money Magazine.

woods and wetlands encompassing miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, picnic areas, a restored Revolutionary War farmhouse and a Visitors Center. The center stands on top of Combos Hill, which was once commanded by the Continental Army Artillery. Inside is an interpretive display area, including artifacts recovered from the battlefield. The Gateway National Recreation Area, along the coast in Sandy Hook, straddles New York and New Jersey, and is comprised of three units, including the popular Sandy Hook barrier peninsula in New Jersey. Just 40 miles from Old Bridge Township and accessible via NJ Route 36 South, this 1,665-acre destination features a seven-mile stretch of beach, a pristine holly forest and attractions such as Fort Hancock, the Sandy Hook Proving Ground, and the Sandy Hook Lighthouse – America’s oldest operating lighthouse.

A

major attraction in Old Bridge Township is Cheesequake State Park that celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 2015. Uniquely located in the middle of the urban north and the suburban south, the park lies in a transitional zone between two different ecosystems. This 386-acre park is made up of open fields, saltwater and freshwater marshes, a white cedar swamp, pine barons and a northeastern hardwood forest. This state park is a terrific example of vegetation change from a costal salt marsh habitat to upland forests, which can be observed from the various trails running through the park. The natural area displays a diversity of plant species and community characteristics of both north and south New Jersey. Visitors can take advantage of the five designated trails for hiking and mountain biking, 50-plus campsites, several picnic areas, water activities on the six-acre Hooks Creek Lake, as well as the Interpretive Center. The center features wildlife historical exhibits, information on Native Americans and early colonization in the area, and even programs that cover the three different habitats discovered in Cheesequake State Park.

A little further south is the Freehold Raceway. This great location is for those looking to place bets on live and simulcast standardbred harness races. The raceway is recognized as the oldest and fastest daytime half-mile harness racing track in the U.S. Monmouth Raceway Park, located in nearby Oceanport, has been a shore tradition since 1870. Three buildings have carried the name Monmouth Park in the last 139 years. Due to the high caliber of its racing, Monmouth Park achieved distinction as the “Newmarket of America” – a reference to the famed racecourse in England. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority purchased Monmouth Park in 1986 and many of the historic, century-old stakes races were reinstated, with the Monmouth Cup, inaugurated in 1884, renamed the Philip H. Iselin Handicap. Between May and September, concert-goers can enjoy the sounds of various musicians and bands at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. Only 10 miles south of Old Bridge Township, the modern outdoor amphitheater is comprised of 7,000 seats and an encompassing grassy area that accommodates more than 10,000 guests.

Old Bridge Township is home to the state’s premier and most famous motor sports park, the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. Stretching over 500 acres, the raceway hosts a variety of both motor sports and non-motor sport events during the season from late February through late November. The raceway hosts the NHRA Championship Drag Races, Family Fun Thrill Shows, AMA Motocross and many other action-packed events. For more information, call (732) 446-7800 or visit www. etownraceway.com.

Other major attractions reachable from Old Bridge Township include Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari in Jackson, the largest Six Flags in the country; the Meadowlands Sports Complex in Rutherford, which features the IZOD Center, hosting big name performers year-round, the Meadowlands Racetrack, MetLife Stadium, Newark’s Prudential Center and all the draws of downtown New York City, just 36 miles from Old Bridge. 

staff. The district experienced an increase in collaboration among staff, across grade levels, departments, buildings and district-wide. This team approach has increased our expertise and spread this knowledge exponentially, reaching more students, therefore providing greater opportunity for success on all levels.

Old Bridge (NJ) Township Public Schools Student Success: Making it Happen through Connections & Positivity

O

ld Bridge Township Public Schools is a 42-squaremile suburban school district located at the southern end of Middlesex County, in central New Jersey. The district has a total day-time student enrollment of just over 9,000 pupils, and students are housed in a pre-kindergarten annex, 12 elementary schools grades K-5, two middle schools grades 6-8, and a single campus high school with a separate facility for 9th graders. The population, exceeding three thousand students, makes it the third largest high school in the state.

Powerful professional development has allowed the district to adopt a culture of positivity in the Old Bridge Schools, and transfer those feelings into trust with the community. Old Bridge Public Schools has forged a strong relationship with Character.org, which focuses on defining and encouraging effective practices and approaches for quality character education, and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas. In recent years, Character.org has bestowed the following recognition on our schools:

The positive climate change in Old Bridge directly impacted student success through individual, intrinsic motivation, as well as the growth and professional development of the Old Bridge

• 13 State Schools of Character • 11 National Schools of Character • 1 National Model School of Character • Old Bridge Township Public Schools was selected as a NATIONAL District of Character Furthermore, the Old Bridge School District has been bestowed with these fine testaments to a district climate and culture shift: • The Marching Knights of Old Bridge High School will represent the United States in Normandy France for the D-Day anniversary. • The District Orchestra received the Spirit of Boston award given to the competing school that demonstrates teamwork, character, and benevolence. • Local media selected Old Bridge High School as having the greatest school spirit.

Continuing with academic recognition, Old Bridge schools made an impression with the National Title I Association, which has been selecting examples of superior Title I school programs for national recognition, through the National Title I Distinguished Schools program, since 1996. This year, Cheesequake Elementary School was nominated as a National Title I Distinguished School for exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years. Furthermore, the schools have witnessed the following accomplishments in the past year: • 38 percent reduction in Special Education referrals • 58 percent reduction in incidents of violence, vandalism and substance abuse • Dramatic declines in reported incidents of HIB • Two members of the instructional staff selected as New Jersey Department of Education Exemplary Educators. • Two Nationally Distinguished PTAs • Successfully converted from half-day to full-day kindergarten Old Bridge Township was founded upon rich family traditions and a commitment to community mindfulness. Our schools are a reflection of those founding pillars. Through a quality of character driven focus on academics, athletics and the arts, Old Bridge Township Schools will always be a tremendous source of local pride and global impact! 

As a result of the positive paradigm shift in the culture and climate of the schools, the district has witnessed a direct correlation between improved school climate and advancements in student performance. This year Old Bridge School District received the acknowledgement of being placed on College Board AP Honor Roll. Only a total of 547 school districts across the U.S. and Canada are being honored by the College Board for simultaneously increasing access to Advanced Placement coursework, while maintaining, or increasing, the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. A mere 34 districts, out of 296 in New Jersey, have met the criteria to be placed on the AP Honor Roll this academic year. Old Bridge is one of the few districts to not only meet the rigor for recognition, but to meet the criteria multiple years. The SAT results in New Jersey gained on average 1 point, and decreased nationally by 3 points; Old Bridge increased from 1,474 (2008) to 1,559 (2014). An average score of 1,559 brings OBHS 88 points above the national average, and 45 points above the state average. Only six years prior, where adequate, Old Bridge High School was only scoring in alignment with the national average.

It is also a popular destination for a multitude of businesses looking for a high-revenue location “It’s a very family-oriented community, and a great place to do business,” explains David Lee Hernandez, Jr., principal, Waitt & Old Bridge Funeral Homes, a family-owned and operated business making their home in Old Bridge since 2007. “Great schools, proximity to Routes 9, 18, and the Parkway, a business-friendly environment, supportive economic development team and geographically situated to attract those with roots in both New Jersey and New York City – all factors which made Old Bridge a great choice when sourcing our new business location just a few years ago. As a business owner, it’s great to know the town is behind you!”

he Township of Old Bridge operates under a strong mayor/ council form of government. The mayor is directly elected by the voters to serve a four-year term. The nine members of the Township Council are elected by the voters to serve staggered four-year terms. Of the nine members, six represent specific wards and three are designated “at-large” members.

The Township Council generally meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Complex.
