100th ANNIVERSARY

Palatine is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding this year with events, small and large, throughout the year.

The community officially began on April 2, 1866, when 73 residents voted in favor of the area becoming a municipality and 20 voted against it.

But because the development of Palatine was very much an evolution, there are many dates that lay claim to its founding. The first settlers, George Ela, Russell Andrus and Asahel Harris and family, all arrived in 1835 and many others followed, primarily from New England. The first child of settlers, born in the area, was Clarinda Cady, born in 1838.

“The gently-rolling countryside and the cool shade of wooded groves seemed like home to the newcomers who had left green hills and fertile river valleys to begin this adventure in the west,” according to Palatine’s Centennial book, written in 1955. “The stretches of soil showed such promise that neighbors and relatives ‘back east’ were sent for; and the cleared sections began to make a pattern on the prairie.”

The name “Palatine” became associated with this part of Cook County in 1850. The Illinois Legislature passed an act requiring each county to be divided into townships of approximately six miles square and each township to be named. So the leaders of Township 42 met at the Wittenberg schoolhouse to choose a name.

Many names were suggested, including Yankton, Deer Grove, Marion and Palatine. Harrison Cook suggested Palatine because he had come from Palatine, New York, and that name was ultimately chosen.

1855 was another pivotal year; earlier residents of Palatine chose it as the community’s founding date, as

reflected by the Centennial being celebrated in 1955.

According to Alice Rosenberg, archivist for the Palatine Historical Society, that is when the railroad came to Palatine and it was also when Joel Wood surveyed the village into lots, blocks and streets and people like Elisha Pratt began building (and in many cases relocating) homes and businesses to the area around the station. Churches, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, a post office and a cemetery followed soon after.

Anyone who wonders why Palatine ended up getting the railroad through its real estate should think no further than money.

When the Illinois and Wisconsin Railroad began building west of Dunton (Arlington Heights) in 1853, several communities wanted track to come to them. The railroad told them the constituency that raised the most money for the purchase of railroad stock would get the track. Clay’s Crossing (one mile west of Palatine) subscribed to $3,000 in stock, and Palatine subscribed to $10,000 in stock (there is no record of how much Glendale one mile east of Palatine raised to purchase stock). Joel Wood and Mason Sutherland, the Palatine representatives, came home victorious, and the single-gauge track was laid in June, 1855. There was one freight train each day at first. It came out from the city in the morning and went back in the afternoon, and the first Palatine train station was a freight car. Passenger service began six months later. Before long, the company hired Julius Thurston of Palatine to turn the switch, fill the water tank, check bills and handle the freight. For this he was paid the princely sum of $15 per month.

Soon, however, the railroad failed and the stockholders lost everything. A new company using the same

tracks was quickly formed – the Prairie du Chien and Fond du Lac Railroad – and in 1859 they changed the name to the Chicago and North Western Railroad.

Even one train a day meant days saved in the marketing of merchandise,” the Centennial book noted. “But not everyone was so optimistic about the future of Palatine. Hiram Thurston is said to have laughed in Joel Wood’s face when he offered him what is now the center of downtown Palatine for $10. It was a slough filled with cattails and green water.”

Keep in mind what was happening nationally, starting in 1861 – the American Civil War. Palatine citizens had battles and the fates of local soldiers on their minds during the first half of the 1860s. In fact, Mason Sutherland led Company E of the 113th Illinois Volunteers during the war, which included 37 volunteers from Palatine Township. In fact, he died of typhoid while on the Vicksburg campaign.

Palatine residents joined other regiments, too, so the people of Palatine probably had their minds on the strife that had overtaken their country, not on formally incorporating their community, Rosenberg said.

It wasn’t until early 1866 that Palatine residents were able to turn their attention back to local affairs. They took the vote on April 2 and seven days later elected five trustees and a police magistrate. Interestingly, things haven’t changed much in Illinois politics in 150 years. One year

later, all five trustees and the magistrate were all voted out of office and replaced with a new slate.

It bears noting that the Illinois Legislature had not yet passed an act concerning the incorporation of cities and villages within the state when Palatine’s residents voted to form a municipality in 1866.

That legislation didn’t come about until three years later, so if you ask the state, Palatine was formally incorporated in 1869, the first year that they could do so under Illinois law – yet another (and the last) date competing for Palatine’s founding designation.

After that, the town just took off and grew steadily. Palatine opened its own high school in 1875. In 1877, the Deluge Fire Company was organized and 10 years later a hand pumper was purchased to fight fires.

Palatine voted for the establishment of a public library in 1924, and eight tiny rural elementary schools were consolidated into District 15 in 1946.

Finally, two park districts – the Palatine Park District and the Salt Creek Rural Park District – were organized in 1945 and 1956, respectively.

Today Palatine, which had a population of only 1,100 in 1920, boasts a population of 65,479 (2010 census) and is also the home to numerous businesses, large and small, including Weber-Stephen Products and a division of the Northrop-Grumman Corporation. The 200-acre Harper Community College campus is also located in Palatine.

The economic engine of Palatine is chugging along, just like the trains that travel up and down the railroad tracks through the community, multiple times a day.

The village was particularly pleased to learn that Weber-Stephen Products, the maker of Weber barbeque grills, smokers and other associated products, is expanding and staying in Palatine. The company has relocated its headquarters into the former Schneider Electric campus at 1415 S. Roselle Rd. It is consolidating approximately 150 administrative employees from its original location on East Daniels St. and several other area locations into the new facility.

Eventually, according to Michael Jacobs, Deputy Village Manager for Palatine, approximately 300 employees are expected to work in the new headquarters that will include offices, indoor parking, a test kitchen and an outdoor area for grilling. It will continue to manufacture products at its East Daniels St. location.

“We wanted everyone under one roof again and we were thrilled to be able to find a location within Palatine because we don’t want to lose any of our employees because of a move,” said James Stephen, executive chairman of Weber-Stephen Products. “We also have a great relationship with the village. They have done everything within their power to encourage us to stay, so I am glad that we were able to do so.”

“Weber-Stephen Products is an icon to this community, so it was exciting that they chose to move into a new, larger headquarters in Palatine,” Jacobs said.

erty along Route 53 at Northwest Highway into a senior housing facility to be called “The Grand at Twin Lakes” is another exciting bit of news for Palatine residents. The property had become tired and it struggled as a hotel; Jacobs feels that the senior facility will be a better use of the property and will also provide much-needed housing for the growing senior population.

Numerous other Palatine retailers are shifting to new locations, but most are staying within the village, which Jacobs sees as an endorsement of the community and its continuing efforts to keep taxes low and to expedite the zoning and building permit review process.

Steve Gaus, the new executive director of the Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce, agreed and acknowledged the Chamber’s cooperation with the village in helping to attract business to the community and retain it once it is here.

“The Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce strives to be a resource for new businesses, as well as those that are moving and expanding. By fostering positive and cooperative on-going relationships with our local, state and county officials, as well as with property owners and commercial brokers, we can facilitate new connections and possibilities and make the Palatine area an even more attractive destination for business,” Gaus said.

Among those choosing to remain in Palatine, but shifting locations is Hobby Lobby, which has moved from its Northwest Highway location in Palatine Plaza to the Deer Grove Plaza along Dundee Road this summer.

Aldi will also move into Deer Grove Plaza soon.

Other recent or soon-to-occur changes include an Advance Auto Parts store moving into a new building along Northwest Highway, north of the Popeye’s Chicken. A second commercial building also will be constructed on the site. Enterprise Rent-A-Car opened this spring on the site of the former 84 Lumber along Rand Road and the former Idol’s site at Dundee and Rand Roads is to be redeveloped into a strip center with three retail/ restaurant spaces, including a Panera restaurant with a drive-through.

“These are all the normal ebbs and flows of commerce. Firms relocate for their own business reasons, looking for the best location, and we are happy when they choose a new location that is still in Palatine,” Jacobs said. “They all have their own formulas and they know exactly where they want to be, right down to which side of the street they want, so if we can provide what they are looking for, they come here.”

As for downtown Palatine, he said it has been quite stable recently with businesses that have found their niche there and almost no open spaces.

“The downtown businesses have been holding their own periodic events like ‘Girls on the Town’ and those have been successful so they are looking to build on them,” he said.

Not far from the downtown area is the new Palatine Village Hall at 200 E. Wood St., which opened in late June. It replaces a building on the same site which, as Jacobs said, “was never designed to be a village hall.”

“The new village hall will benefit everyone because it was designed to meet the needs of the people of Palatine with community rooms for meetings and gatherings and even a space right off the lobby that we can use for early voting,” he said.

“It is a huge improvement,” Jacobs added.

Palatine is fortunate to be served by a variety of businesses – from those that primarily serve local residents, to those that manufacture and distribute goods around the country and the world.

EUROFRESH MARKET Eurofresh Market, 130 W. Northwest Hwy., is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Guido Tenuta founded the grocery store in 1996 after partnering for over 25 years with his uncle in two fruit markets in Chicago. The first, A & G Fruit Market on Central Avenue, has since been sold, but Family Fruit Market in Portage Park is still owned by the family and run by a cousin, said Rosanna Tenuta, manager of Eurofresh Market and Guido’s daughter. Guido also co-owns Joseph’s Marketplace in Crystal Lake.

“My dad was living in Inverness back in the 1990s and he would drive by this Palatine location often,” Rosanna recalled. “It had been an Eagle Foods and then a store called Water Tower Market and my dad considered it a dream location. So when he decided to expand and go out on his own, he purchased the whole plaza and opened Eurofresh Market.”

Rosanna has been manager of the 30,000-square-foot store for the past 15 years. Her husband, Raf Fernandes, is the store supervisor and her sister, Arianna Tenuta, is also involved in store management. Guido is now semi-retired but he occasionally goes to the market to choose produce and still oversees things at the store six days a week. The family is supplemented by a “great and loyal crew of employees,” she said.

“What sets us apart from our competition is the fact that we have fresh produce delivered seven days a week and we carry unusual items that you won’t find in most stores – items that are used in Hispanic, Italian and Asian cooking, in particular. We also carry a wide variety of meats and cheeses in our deli that are natural and both preservative free and nitrate free. We are a full-service grocery store. You can buy everything you need at Eurofresh Market,” she said.

“The grocery business has become very competitive. We work hard to keep our customers satisfied and coming back,” Rosanna said.

WEBER-STEPHEN PRODUCTS, LLC Weber-Stephen Products LLC has been a part of Palatine since 1982.

They currently fabricate and assemble their Genesis and Summit gas grills at the facility on East Daniels Street, as well as some of their small Smokey Joe charcoal grills, said James Stephen, executive chairman and son of the founder, George Stephen.

The story of Stephen’s invention of the grill in 1952 has become legendary. He had developed a love for outdoor cooking while serving in the Army but was frustrated with the open brazier grilling technique available at the time. He wanted to protect his food from the elements and seal in a tasty smoked flavor.

Stephen worked for Weber Brothers Metal Works, at the time, which was manufacturing metal buoys for the Chicago Yacht Club and he became inspired. He crafted the first incarnation of the Weber Grill by cutting one of those metal buoys in half, drilling holes in both the bottom and the lid and adding two wire grates.

By 1954 he was selling his grills in earnest, so he purchased the Weber Brothers company and re-named it Weber-Stephen Products. Over the years the product line evolved. They introduced the Genesis line of gas grills in 1985, which revolutionized the industry. In recent years, smaller Weber gas grills have become popular at sporting events and with city dwellers with small outdoor spaces.

In 2010 the Stephen family sold a majority interest in the business to a Chicago-based investment firm “for estate planning reasons” because George Stephen left behind 12 children when he died in 1993, James Stephen said. They continue to run the firm, however, and retained total ownership of the four Weber Grill Restaurants in Chicago, Schaumburg, Lombard and Indianapolis.

Currently, the firm is working on further embracing its consumers with cookbooks, a Grilling Academy and some smartphone apps because they feel there is still growth potential in North America.

Internationally, Weber products are plentiful in Western Europe, Central America and Australia and they are actively pioneering the products in Asia, Eastern Europe and South America.

“It takes time to become part of the culinary fabric of each country, but we are successful because we embrace the local cuisine and lifestyle in each country we enter,” he said.

Most recently, Weber-Stephen purchased the former Schneider Electric building at Roselle Road and Euclid Avenue in Palatine in order to consolidate its sales, finance, customer service and other administrative offices into one location.

Making Rooms & Windows Beautiful Since 1960 PHOTO’S HOT DOGS Photo’s Hot Dogs entered the Palatine fast food scene in the summer of 2004. Jim Photopoulos, owner of the popular Photo’s Hot Dogs in Mount Prospect since 1989, was looking for a place for a second location and Palatine was at the top of his list of possibilities.

“I grew up in Arlington Heights and went to church in Palatine, so I had lots of friends and family living here,” he recalled.

So when he went shopping for a location to expand his very successful Photo’s Hot Dogs business, he was pleased to find that the former Burger King property at 301 N. Northwest Hwy. in Palatine was available. Originally, he planned to renovate the old building, but ended up building a new restaurant closer to the street.

From the day the restaurant opened, Photopoulos made sure that they were an integral part of the community, just like he had done in Mount Prospect. They offer a free ice cream cone to children who visit; run specials four nights a week; give out free samples of their marinated chicken; and have always welcomed customers to use their facility for parties – from birthday celebrations to team parties to baby showers. In fact, they recently partitioned part of the restaurant for this purpose.

In addition, he explained, “I have never said ‘no’ to a donation. I am a big believer in the ‘give and you shall receive’ philosophy. It worked in Mount Prospect and it has worked here in Palatine.” In fact, he has a bound book of thank you notes from churches, schools and organizations which prove his connection to the Palatine/Rolling Meadows community.

Photopoulos has also always allowed local organizations to hang posters for their events in the small entryway.

“We want people to know that we support virtually anything that is happening within about a three-mile radius and, in turn, we want them to support us,” Photopoulos said.

“The people of Palatine have been great to us and we have planted our roots here. It is such a treat for me to see several generations of families coming to my restaurant. For instance, I know that the children that come here for birthday parties and team parties will remember Photo’s Hot Dogs for the rest of their lives.”
