Since the mid 1980s, Pittsburgh has been recognized in numerous national circles as a leader among American cities in stability, livability, affordability, versatility and change. Once driven by its prowess in the steel industry, Pittsburgh was home to more corporate headquarters located within its boundaries than all but two other U.S. cities. When the steel business left in the 1970s, however, it took with it that distinction and a lot of jobs, people and prosperity. Pittsburgh was at a crossroads. It could bemoan its fate and fade into obscurity or reinvent itself. It chose to reinvent itself. Today, Pittsburgh has ascended to the top in the fields of education, medicine and technology. The North Hills of Pittsburgh has prospered from the reinvention. Membership is a strong investment in the community, through the chamber’s deep spirit of giving. “Through the years we have been fortunate to create several hallmark programs that help us give back and celebrate the non-profit and charitable community,” said Jim Boltz, president of the Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber. “We’re very proud to honor them for all that they do, and the services they provide.” One longstanding event and holiday celebration is the Giving Tree. “We collect more than 500 gifts for organizations and charities to share with the folks that the charities serve, from a pair of shoes to a warm blanket, or gift card to a local business. Gifts are donated by our generous members. The program expands every year as we seek new charities to serve. And it isn’t just for children. There are gifts for adults, too – from a set of pots and pans to a microwave oven, cosmetics and clothing.” Keeping the community healthy, the chamber showcases healthy living and lifestyles at its annual Health + Wellness Fair. “We bring together more than three dozen vendors and guest speakers who provide pertinent information about healthcare services and topics,” Boltz said. “It

expected to stay that way for the next five to ten years. It’s not going to change. There are big opportunities, strong growth and good family sustaining jobs, and we’re seeing investments in infrastructure across the board. Healthcare and hospitals all have big plans for construction, as do the universities.” Housing construction is another very bright spot. “Suburban home building is still thriving, but we’re experiencing a definite shift,” Ruppersberger said. “As businesses are moving their operations into the city, we’re seeing more housing underway in the downtown core.” And fueling almost every aspect of the economy, the multibillion-dollar Shell Chemical petrochemical plant under construction in Beaver County is making everything perk. “It’s a massive project and we’re still very early on its development,” Ruppersberger said. “They are building an ethane cracker plant, a process that breaks a natural liquid gas, ethane, into smaller molecules to create ethylene, which is used in plastics manufacturing for a host of applications.” The plant is scheduled to begin commercial operations in the early 2020s, Ruppersberger said. “Already there are 3,000 construction workers on site and we’re expecting that total to climb to 6,000 during the next several months,” he said. “One of the many positive benefits of the project is that a lot of the construction workers will remain in our community after the plant is finished, taking jobs in ongoing construction projects. They’re already qualified and will be prepared to go to work when they leave the plant.” The region is perfectly poised for strategic growth, focused on capitalizing on established sectors such as financial and business services, manufacturing and industry, while cultivating new opportunities for technology, robotics and other emerging industries, as outlined in the Allegheny Conference’s 2018-2019 agenda: Creating a Next Generation Economy for All. Some surprises are in store, too. Leaders know success depends in part on how well the region is perceived, locally, nationally and around the globe. “We’ll be rolling out a new branding campaign next year,” Ruppersberger said. “We have an abundance of opportunity in an ever-evolving region with a unique character, and that’s a story we need to tell. It’s a place of authenticity built on 200 years of history, with a remarkable future ahead.” n

Generation Next Area Schools Start Workforce Development Eefforts at a Young Age While area schools may educate students in different ways, they have one central message: Help students start thinking about careers at a young age. From bringing tools and STEM projects to middle schools to collaborating with area high schoolers on hands-on projects, there are many initiatives happening to build a successful workforce. From sophomores to seniors A.W. Beattie Career Center welcomed a record 800 students in their 10th-12th-grade programs for the 20182019 school year. Students can apply for the Center’s programs, which are offered on a half-day basis after a student completes their academic coursework for the other half-day. “Our students are able to leave with a number of introductory skills and certifications,” said Eric Heasley, executive director at A. W. Beattie Career Center. “This provides them a direct opportunity to work for an employer right out of high school.” Popular programs at the school include their HVAC program as well as new veterinary sciences and sports medicine offerings. Prepared for tomorrow The Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School or PA Cyber is a school that serves children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Some of the unique programs PA Cyber offers include a MakeIt Academy, which are workshops designed to build skills in robotics, coding, software,

individual online course offerings. A few of the areas of concentration include nursing education, medical imaging, criminal justice and economics. Through Slippery Rock University’s online learning opportunities, a busy lifestyle doesn’t mean there isn’t time for earning a degree. Degree programs include leadership studies, management, nursing, special education and history. Westminster College has been recognized for its online graduate education programs by U.S. News & World Report. Programs include education and clinical mental health counseling. There are some online offerings for undergraduates as well. Keeping students in mind, the Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber offers student memberships, allowing these up-and-coming professionals to build contacts and make connections within the field they are interested in pursuing after graduation. n

For the 2018-2019 school year, the school welcomed seven college and career teachers who work with students of all ages about careers. “When our students go to college or the workforce, they reflect that their online education required a certain level of discipline and self-motivation,” said Brian Hayden, PA Cyber CEO. “Many students feel through their online education, they’ve been able to motivate and organize themselves effectively.” Partnerships build portfolios In spring 2018, Community College of Allegheny County opened its Innovation Lab where community professionals can present project-based learning initiatives. The students are then invited to work on the projects to advance their learning in fields such as data analytics, cybersecurity, simulation, gaming and business. “This model benefits both industry and students by allowing industry free assistance in completing projects while students become career-prepared with the opportunity to develop their portfolios,” said Dr. Gretchen Mullin-Sawicki, the college’s campus president. Meeting industry needs Process Technology is a highly specialized program offered at the Community College of Beaver County that has businesses and students energized about future work opportunities. The college is the only one in the region that uses guidelines from the North American Process Technology Alliance to help students train in this STEM-based career that has applications in chemical, petrochemical, steel, pharmaceutical, and related industries. “I think it’s key to put industry at the center of everything we do,” said John Goberish, dean of workforce and continuing education at Community College of Beaver County. “We’re out there connecting with industry partners in how we can train not only our existing workforce to keep skills up to date, but also the next generation of workers.” n

New growth at The Block Northway The past year has proven a period of dramatic growth for The Block Northway in Ross Township. The former site of Northway Mall, The Block Northway has been revitalized to include major names such as Nordstrom Rack (the first in Pennsylvania), Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th and DSW Shoes. In 2018, The Block Northway welcomed Le Creuset, David’s Bridal and Blaze Pizza. 2019 is sure to continue the growth of this mall, with the addition of a 40,000-square-foot Dave & Buster’s location. With a blend of shopping and eating, supported by regular events, The Block

Northway is an important site for commerce. A New Kind of bulletin board The Town of McCandless offers a new take on an old tradition: the bulletin board. The town passed a resolution in October 2018 to support small businesses in the community, including officially declaring a “Small Business Saturday” in November. Through the virtual “Small Business Bulletin Board,” business owners can submit information about their business and what makes the business unique for shoppers. Through the board and continued measures to support local business owners, the Town of McCandless is committed to recognizing all the contributions area businesses make to their economy. Building traffic At Cranberry Township, a lot of new business

BUSINESS construction was popping up, yet residents and visitors weren’t sure what was to come. That’s why the township started a portion of their website called “What Are They Building?” The page supports new and upcoming businesses by listing projects that are just opened, under construction and under review. “It’s our second most-popular webpage after parks and recreation,” said Chelsea Puff, business and economic development manager at Cranberry Township. “We’re glad that people out there are curious about what’s happening in Cranberry Township.” In addition, the township offers a quarterly newsletter called “Cranberry Today,” which features a special business section. The newsletter, which is distributed to the more than 1,100 township businesses, highlights three to four local businesses. “I think the great thing about Cranberry Township is that we have a thriving local economy and businesses of every size contributes to that,” Puff said. “We are always looking to connect businesses with the resources they need, and we encourage them to let us know what their needs are.” n

Business Stars Rock Building brands and reputations, businesses and nonprofits open the door to a world of opportunities at the annual Pittsburgh Business Show. One of the largest events in the city, it sparkles with the energy of thought leaders, networking, meeting potential business partners, and the kinds of learning that propel success. “We started planning the first show in 2015, it was held in 2017 and it just keeps growing,” said Linda Jo Thornberg, president of the Pittsburgh Business Show and vice president of corporate communications and PR for Higher Images. “People love it. We’re expecting about 3,000 attendees at our third annual show this year, and more than 160 vendors.” The show brings fresh perspectives on business, and there’s always something new. This year, it’s a one-of-a-kind event for women as part of the two-day expo. “We’re excited to launch Women Who Love Life, as part of the Business Show,” Thornberg said. “It’s exclusively for womenowned businesses, a leadership and networking conference that teaches women how to make a difference in their lives and the organizations they serve. It helps them link their passion for

Throughout the two-day show held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh, and open to all businesses and attendees, panel discussions provide thought-provoking programming and forums addressing best practices and business strategies. “Our presenters and speakers are at the top of their fields, discussing hot topics that span successful financial strategies and applying for loans and crowdfunding, to cutting-edge ideas for creative marketing,” Thornberg said. success, even providing transportation to its North Campus and food pantries at its campus locations. “We recently started our own shuttle service, one that picks up students and brings them to classes,” Mullin-Sawicki said. “The shuttles run Monday through Thursday, and we’ve had very good participation. We recently started a food pantry, too. We’re trying to cover as many supports as we can for student success. Part of that is keeping them and their families healthy with good food, and getting them here so they can pursue the education they deserve.” When it comes to amenities, the North Pittsburgh area is growing, brimming with shops and palatepleasing places to dine. “Our shopping district offers many kinds of eateries, restaurants and cafes, featuring various styles of cuisine,” Mullin-Sawicki said. “More people are moving in, too, attracted by the excellent school
