After 27 years, Dominican University president Carroll giving up dream job BY ORRIN SCHWARZ
For Reflejos
It’s a scary thought, voluntarily giving up the job you’ve loved for 27 years, but Dominican University president Donna Carroll decided the time was right. “For me I’m terrified,” Carroll said, “but I think one of the things about long-term leadership is you can’t not make the right decision because it’s scary, and so I think it’s the right time. COVID in a strange sort of way is a transitional space ... many of the normal practices of leadership, the public practice, is suspended.” But while in-person classes and public lectures and award ceremonies might be on hold, the university continues to move forward. When her successor is chosen, or shortly after, Carroll will leave an institution that has grown considerably since she arrived from New York in 1993. She will leave Dominican in good hands and in good shape. “When you’ve built a place and you do care about it like I do,” Carroll said, “that last great gift that you give the institution is a timely and smooth transition.” The school is on sound financial footing, and Carroll happily brags on its rankings. A school that had 729 undergraduate students when she arrived in River Forest now has about 2,200 as it nears its 100th anniversary, plus 1,000 graduate students. It has a School of Health Sciences added just a few years ago. You can understand why 10 years ago the Daily Herald Business Ledger honored Carroll with an Influential Women in Business Award. And make no mistake, while Dominican is still very much an academic institution, good business practices and integration into the local business community are significant. “There’s always a tension in a university,” Carroll says. “We always say a university is not a business, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have good business practices. And I think when you’re a small institution that is tuition driven, market driven, you have to have good business practices.” While many colleges its size around the country are faltering financially, Dominican is doing well. This fall’s freshman class was 465 students, even though the COVID-19 pandemic made starting school so difficult. Life marches on. “If the institution isn’t well-managed and it feels disruptive, that distracts faculty and students,” Carroll said. Just as she doesn’t want her departure to be disruptive, Carroll has worked to make sure the school’s financial situation

doesn’t distract. Over 27 years, she has built a strong relationship with the local business community. Her longevity, consistency at the top, allowed Carroll to build a bridge of strong relationships between the school and the business community. That has helped find internships and jobs for students. It has helped raise money to endow chairs and create scholarships and even build buildings. Carroll also brags about Dominican’s diverse student body. “Over the last 10 years, we have seen enormous growth in prospective college students -- Hispanic students, African-American students, first-generational college students -- and so then we become the pipeline for those students going on into businesses, higher education, social service, into the next generation,” Carroll said. “When you think today of any service organization or any business for that matter and who their client base is or who they’re serving, it is a very diverse population.” About 30% of Dominican’s students work 30 to 40 hours a week while in school.
“Part of the reason we really push for paid internships and paid experiential learning is that many of our students can’t just give up that job at McDonald’s to do that 20-hour-a-week internship at DeLoitte because there are economic constraints,” Carroll said. And many Dominican students, including those at the Brennan School of Business, are from the Chicago area and expect to stay here after graduation. “If you are a business, that can be a pretty compelling argument,” Carroll said. “You are investing in your pipeline for the future. So that has been a persuasive argument for me often.” Carroll sees the student body’s demographics as a strength to sell the business community as well. “This is a very industrious, driven community-oriented cohort of students, and they understand the value of a good job and the importance of working and supporting their family,” she said. For 27 years, they got that an example of that work ethic from their university president also.
Carroll has led the university during a period of extraordinary and sustained growth. During her tenure, the number of full-time faculty has doubled, new schools and programs have been established and the university’s operating budget has increased fourfold. She has managed three campaigns that raised more than $165 million in support for student aid, programs and facilities, including five endowed chairs, three new buildings, and countless scholarships in addition to significant federal grant support. It was during Carroll’s tenure that the university purchased a second campus and, most recently, dedicated a new Learning Commons, an area encompassing integrated student services, study space and the WeatherTech Innovation Lab. The university is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as #10 among157 regional universities in the Midwest, the best value school in the Chicago area and #1 in Illinois for the social mobility of its students. Dominican places a high priority on closing the equity gap in its student body, half of whom are first-generation-to-college and nearly half of whom are Pell eligible. “Dominican has been incredibly blessed to have Donna at our helm for more than 26 years, crafting and leading one of the greatest institutional transformations in the history of U.S. higher education,” said Tom Abrahamson, board chairperson. “Donna is the best-of-the-best among college presidents. While it is hard to imagine Dominican without her, and we will miss her terribly, we are also eternally grateful for everything she has done and will continue to do between now and her well-earned retirement next June. Donna embodies the Dominican ethos of caritas et veritas (love and truth). We wish her the very best and look forward to celebrating her success in the months ahead.” An outspoken advocate for immigration reform and the rights of undocumented students, Carroll guided Dominican University as it crafted a Sanctuary Campus resolution in 2016. She has been honored for her leadership, advocacy and contributions to higher education by numerous organizations including Crain’s Chicago Business, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Archdiocese of Chicago. “Too often a president is credited with the accumulated successes of an institution. Please know that I know the truth—that it has taken the talent, hard work and sacrifice of many individuals, over the years, to build the Dominican of today. How blessed I am to be a part of such a dedicated community,” Carroll wrote in her announcement to the faculty and staff.

In middle school Karen Pauly would bring home rescue dogs, her father, Jim, remembers. She just always had a passion for dogs. Despite her family’s 102-year history in the dental profession -- Jim followed his father and grandfather into the family business -- Karen never had a passion for dentistry. So when Jim retired a couple of years ago and closed his practice on the west side of Aurora, he encouraged his longtime dental assistant and office manager to follow her passion. This summer Karen and Jim Pauly plan to open the first Hounds Town USA doggy day care franchise in Illinois, in a former McDonald’s right across the street from Jim’s old dental practice. “It was a little disappointing when my dad realized I wasn’t going to go back to school to become a dentist,” Karen says, “but he also was understanding that that was not my passion.” So Karen started looking for a franchiser to work with, finding a fit with Hounds Town USA, which has helped with so much of the process already. “She and the founder of Hounds Town USA (Mike Gould) hit it off really well on a lot of their philosophies about dogs and training and behavior. It just seemed like a match,” Jim says. Despite looking from Rt. 47 east to Rt. 59, north to St. Charles and south to Oswego, they settled on familiar territory. “I figured it would be a good opportunity to get something on the west side and also reopen some of the businesses, some of the buildings that have been closed for so long in the West Plaza area,” Karen says. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic they found plenty of real estate with favorable lease terms. “There’s a lot of commercial real estate out there that needs some help, so hopefully we can keep on going for a while,” Jim says. They found a willing partner in the city of Aurora. “We’ve heard from a lot of the other franchisers that the permitting process is very difficult, but I think Aurora is so eager to get businesses in these spaces that have been vacant for so long that they’re kind of open to just about anything,” Karen says, “and I think once we brought it to them, explaining that there is a lack of doggy day cares in this area, they realized that yeah, there really aren’t any over here, so that will be a good thing.” Jim, who has found himself a little bored at times in retirement, will help with the books and consult on business questions, drawing on his decades of experience running his practice. That will allow him to be involved while still leaving time for travel and golf. Karen will focus on taking care of the dogs. The family name has opened a lot of doors all over Aurora for her. In taking bids for the construction work that was expected to begin in March, many of the business owners have known her father for years. “It’s funny, even going to open a banking account or just anything that we’ve gone to do,
immediately everyone recognizes the name,” she says. Meanwhile, Karen continues to work in the Glen Ellyn dental practice she joined when her father retired. When her new business is ready to open, hopefully in late summer, she will go part time at that dental practice, working two days a week. Her employer, she says, has been very understanding.
Help wanted Buona Beef wants to get the word out: It is hiring. The Chicago-area restaurant chain owned by the Buonavolanto family is looking to add about 500 employees. About 200 of them will be added at new stores in Countryside, slated to open around June 1, and Lakemoor, which has a Sept. 1 target date. Recently opened stores in Skokie and Mt. Prospect also will see their employee rosters beefed up, so to speak. But Buona Beef also wants to hire as restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic begin to lift and guests can begin eating in restaurants again in large numbers. “We’re choosing to invest in our people in order to separate ourselves as an industry leader with guest experience, safety and sanitation as we continue to get through this pandemic,” said third-generation owner and company director of people Joe Buonavolanto III. And Buona Beef is investing in its people, offering up to $16 depending on the experience of the new employee. “We’ve notoriously paid above minimum wage,” Buonavolanto said. That’s a lot of giardiniera.

Providing accessible, affordable education never stopped at College of Lake County (CLC), it simply evolved. However, between the increasing availability of COVID-19 vaccines and the increased on-campus safety measures, approximately one-third of all summer 2021 courses will once again offer in-person learning. This includes classes with a hybrid option involving some online work. It’s a three-fold increase compared to summer 2020 when less than ten percent of classes had an in-person element. Another one-third of classes will be online anytime, where students complete the coursework at their own pace. The final one-third will be live via Zoom. Safety is the college’s top priority while remaining committed to providing the best education possible.
“We’ve determined the most effective way to support our students and our community is by ramping up our return to in-person learning,” said CLC Vice President of Education and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Sonya Williams. “We are excited to have more students back on our campuses and will keep working hard to provide a safe environment for their return.” The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the average salary of a person with even some college education is $4,500 more per year compared to someone with only a high school diploma, and $7,300 more per year with an associate degree. Classes have a variety of start dates, beginning in June. Explore available courses, scholarships, class types, payment deadlines and register at https:// www.clcillinois.edu/summer.

Pursuing college goals during a pandemic
BRYAN ARREDONDO
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on added stress for many college students. Those who are also parents or caregivers have been forced to make tough decisions about pursuing educational goals under increasing strain. For students like Bryan Arredondo, of Elgin, that meant using money set aside for college tuition to help cover rent for his family. Arredondo attends Elgin Community College, majoring in computer-aided
design, and his mother was laid off from her job last April. Early last year as the financial effects of the pandemic became apparent, the college worked quickly to address the financial needs of students like Arredondo through several measures including the ECC Foundation’s Student Success Fund. The Foundation rallied its donors around the cause and raised over $100,000 to help students pay for tuition, books, technology access, and even ancillary support for rent, food, health care, and child care. Arredondo is one of more than 65 students who received help from the fund to continue their studies. He also secured an internship that led to a job as a part-time design and project coordinator. Arredondo plans to transition to a full-time position with the company when he completes his degree in May. ECC leaders are committed to providing ongoing financial support so that any student who needs assistance can accomplish their educational and career goals, despite increased adversity and economic hardships. Registration for summer classes opens April 12. Explore programs and learn more at elgin.edu/empezar.

Taxpayers will notice a smaller Waubonsee allocation on their property tax bill for a total of nearly $7.5 million in property tax savings. These savings are the result of the board’s decision to refinance existing college debt to leverage historically low interest rates, while also abating some or all of the bond and debt levy for calendar year 2020. I frequently say that Waubonsee is more than college, it is community college.

The Army has 150 different career options
COVID-19 has been hard on employment in Chicagoland. It’s difficult to know when the economy will recover which leaves many, especially our youth, frustrated and confused about how to build a future. However, there may be an opportunity hiding in plain sight: The U.S. Army. I know, I know I’ve seen the movies and heard the stories too. How much of what we think about the Army is true and how much is a Hollywood creation or simply outdated? To find out, I sat down with Captain Nicholas Bonavia in Glenview. First off, thank you for your service. Many people are skeptical about Army service because they don’t want to fight in a war. Are there any options for people who don’t want to see the front lines? Thank you for your support and having me here today. Absolutely, it might be surprising to hear that MOST Army jobs aren’t directly related to combat. The Army has 150 different career options, and individuals can choose the path that fits their skills and goals, whether it is part-time or full-time service. Almost any job you see in society we have in the Army. Everything from cooks, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, and truck Captain Nicholas Bonavia drivers to lawyers, doctors and engineers. Wow, I never knew. For many families, earning a college degree is a great source of pride. How can you tell those people to give up their college dreams? I’m glad you brought that up, I’m in the Army AND have a degree. No one has to choose between service and school. In fact, you can get a degree while you serve and have the Army pay for it. If you’d rather go to college before or after you the Army, we’ll still pay. If college isn’t for you, you could transfer those benefits to a family member or you can go to a vocational school. Chicago is a great place to live. I don’t think I could leave. I guess the Army isn’t for me and my family. For many people Chicago is hard to leave but the good news is they don’t have to! The Army Reserve allows people to serve part-time in their community while keeping their normal jobs and homes. For others, leaving home seems exciting. We have opportunities in 29 states and 74 countries for those who want to serve full-time. I know the Army is all-volunteer, does that mean you don’t get paid? We do get paid, but pay is just the start of the benefits. As a Soldier you earn a guaranteed paycheck, free food and housing, 100% tuition for college, skill training, 100% medical/dental insurance coverage, 30 days paid vacation, the opportunity to travel the world and up to a $40,000 signing bonus if you qualify. You will be ready for the next step in your life with increased skills and marketability. That’s incredible. Thank you for your time today.

Historias de éxito de W2C
Moisés Arreola-Malagón
W2C Success Stories

Joselyne Ramirez-Lagunas
A native Spanish speaker, Joselyne had to quickly learn English as she was navigating her way through school in the United States. After years of uncertainty, with the help of Waukegan to College, Joselyne soon realized the life changing benefits of a college degree. While in college, Joselyne has taken advantage of every networking opportunity, completed internships and continues to share her story and inspire students in Waukegan. Her younger siblings are now on a path to college and have a role model in their older sister. Joselyne will soon graduate from Bradley University with a Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering.
Maria Gaytan

When Moises joined Waukegan to College as a freshman in high school, his MAP score showed he was not at grade level in math. Moises began to participate in their math enrichment program, Khan Academy. Moises had to start over and build on the foundations of 5th grade math. As a high school senior, he is now excelling in advanced trigonometry with calculus and has become a teacher’s assistant in that same enrichment program that helped him. Moises is excited to help other students who are struggling
Maria’s parents left everything behind to cross the border from Mexico when she was four years old. The price was steep, but they knew Maria’s academic success would be worth it; failure was not an option. Maria embraced all of the college access resources that Waukegan to College provided. She diligently prepared for the SAT and ACT exams. She followed their guidance on which high school classes to pursue, and she built strong relationships with her mentors and coaches. Maria polished and re-polished her college application essays until her courage and grit shone from every sentence. Now, this proud 2019 graduate of Georgetown University is participating in the highly selective Teach for America program, working with students with disabilities.

MCC named ‘Military Friendly School’ MCC named ‘Military Friendly School’McHenry County College has again earned the “Military Friendly School” designation for 2021-2022. The Military Friendly Schools list is created each year based on public data sources, input from student veterans, and survey responses. The survey measures an institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer), and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans. More than 1,200 schools participated in the 2021-2022 survey, with 747 earning the designation. “We’re extremely proud to be a Military Friendly School,” said Gerardo Banuelos, who coordinates efforts in the Student Veterans Resource Center at MCC. “It’s a priority of ours to provide quality, individualized support to our members of the armed forces. We aim to assist our student veterans through every phase of their college experience — helping them apply and choose a program of study that draws on their military experience; providing academic and family support while they are in
school; then offering career services as they enter the workforce.” In addition to the dedicated Student Veterans Resource Center on campus, MCC hosts an active chapter of the Student Veterans of America, which provides opportunities for social and academic networking among veterans on campus. Veterans can also receive a variety of financial aid resources and scholarships to help pay for any books, supplies, or fees not covered by VA benefits. “We want our student veterans to feel supported and empowered to reach their potential, both inside and outside the classroom,” said Dr. Talia Koronkiewicz, vice president of student affairs at MCC. “We’re always looking for new opportunities to help them connect with fellow students, excel in their classes, and reach their goals.” The 2021-2022 “Military Friendly Schools” list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found atwww.militaryfriendly.com. For information about MCC’s student veteran programs, visitwww.mchenry.edu/ veterans.

Itasca middle school custodian recognized as one of the nation’s 10 best BY TREY ARLINE
For Reflejos
A custodian with ties to Itasca Elementary District 10 since he was a child now has the chance to win a contest with $35,000 worth of prizes to reward his hard work. Franco Catalano, of District 10’s F.E. Peacock Middle School, is a finalist in the national 2021 Custodian of the Year contest sponsored by Cintas Corp., which supplies uniforms, restroom supplies, first aid and safety equipment. Catalano is one of 10 finalists from among 2,000 nominees nationwide. Public voting through April 16 at custodianoftheyear.com determines the winner. “It feels great to know that the community has got my back,” said Catalano, 39, who was nominated by school faculty. “They all recognize that I take great pride in my job.” The school has been part of Catalano’s life since he was a child. Born and raised in Itasca, he attended F.E. Peacock from sixth through eighth grades, playing point guard on the school’s basketball team. He now lives in Wheaton with his wife, Lauren, and dog, Alice. Catalano began working as a custodian in 2015 at Raymond Benson Primary School, which is also is part of District 10. There, Catalano said, he was treated like a rock star due to his friendly demeanor and willingness to help students with their stud-

ies. He helped one second-grader, in particular, with studying for spelling tests, giving that student confidence and instilling a sense of pride in Catalano.
Many of the children he met at Raymond Benson moved up to Peacock Middle School, where he began working last year. In his workspace, Catalano has a photo of the Benson schoolchildren -- taken by the school’s li-
brarian for “Pajama Day” -- who now attend Peacock. Catalano said he takes pride in ensuring the school’s cleanliness. As Peacock’s head custodian, he spends his hours with 10 co-workers deep cleaning every classroom and bathroom during the day, while other crews work at night to prevent further COVID-19 exposure. He can be seen cutting grass during the spring and summer, and shoveling and salting walkways during the winter so students and staff can arrive at school safely the next day. When he’s not keeping the school in good shape, he’s encouraging students to get to class on time, helping them find lost items, or even working with them to reorganize their lockers to avoid jams. As the district’s schools resume some in-person learning, Peacock Principal Heidi Weeks credits Catalano’s custodial work with helping make the COVID-19 transition much easier. “He’s always been so well-loved here in the district,” Weeks said. “His pride and work ethic really help him stand out as a custodian. And the other custodians seeing him take pride in his work ethic has really motivated them to work harder as well, which is why they operate so effectively.” Those wishing to vote for Catalano can go to custodianoftheyear.com to submit their votes.
