Latino Faces to Remember

The Importance of Service—And Soft-Serve Like most people, Rafael Castañeda has a passion for ice cream. But his passion for giving back to his community might be even stronger. In mid-2020, Castañeda became the official new owner of the Dairy Queen in Woodstock. But before taking over the community favorite off the Woodstock Square, Castañeda got his start earning his associate’s degree at McHenry County College (MCC). “MCC was the best choice for me at the time,” he said. “I was still close to home, could easily get to campus, and was able to continue working while going to school.” As a first-generation college student, he relied on his high school guidance counselors and the advisors at MCC to help him set up a plan for his future. “Being the first in my family to attend college, I had to chart my own course,” he said. “It definitely felt intimidating at times. But attending MCC really helped me get out of my comfort zone.” While at MCC, Castañeda threw himself into many opportunities on campus, including student government, Latinos Unidos, and the Study Abroad club. “From the get-go I tried to get involved,” he said. “I was involved in high school, and found that really helped me to make some great relationships and feel connected to the community.” During his time in Latinos Unidos, Castañeda helped initiate the Latino Empowerment Conference, an annual event designed to inform, empower, and encourage Latino high school students to attend college. “We wanted to create something that would help first-generation college students like myself, students who might not have guidance available to them at home, or those who were unsure of where to start,” he said of the event. “We wanted these students to know it was possible to attend college and that they had a place they could go for help.” The conference held its first event in 2011 and still takes place annually at the College. “It’s amazing to see it’s still making an impact in the community and that they’re bringing in so many impactful workshops and speakers,” he said. Also while at MCC, Castañeda traveled to Costa Rica as part of the Study Abroad program. “I really encourage all students to study abroad,” he said. “You can learn so much by going to another country and experiencing different cultures. And with a little advanced planning, you can make sure your credits transfer back toward your degree—there are even scholarships available to help pay for it.” After graduating from MCC in 2012, Castañeda went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at Roosevelt University in Chi-

cago, then continued on to DePaul to earn his MBA. It was while he was finishing school at DePaul that he heard the owners of the Dairy Queen were looking to retire and put the business up for sale. “I had worked at the Dairy Queen part time while I was in high school and had kept in touch with the owners, Dave and Barb Hahn. When I heard they were selling the business, I reached out to them to let them know I was interested. They were kind enough to wait for me to finish school so we could get the process going.” That process was again uncharted territory for Castañeda—but he was determined to keep moving forward. “There was a lot of paperwork,” he laughed. “But I basically just made a huge checklist and worked through it slowly, day by day. It was very difficult, but we did it.” Castañeda also reached out to the Illinois Small Business Development Center out of MCC’s McHenry-based Shah Center to help him prepare his business plan, evaluate his competition, and complete lending requests. “I kept telling myself that people had done things like this in the past, so I knew it was possible,” he said. “It’s one of those things that you can read and learn all about, but actually going through all the steps of a business acquisition is a whole different ballgame. I again learned how important it is to seek help and realize you can’t do it all on your own. I had to figure out who to talk to about finances, what attorneys to use, and what food service certifications I needed. Over time, you eventually build your own trusted network of people that

ing paying for college and balancing family, school, and immigration. While I no longer hold a chisel and hammer in my hands, I often consider the profound parallelism in my work from then until now. Today, I work with my colleagues to help shape the future Waubonsee students, 30% of whom identify as Latinx. I am compelled to continue to create a more inclusive community of leaders who welcome, respect, and recognize the beauty and richness of the many perspectives, worldviews, and variety

of life experiences that Latinx students bring to Waubonsee. We all have the opportunity to be stonecutters. Who are you advocating for? What tools are you holding in your hands? How can you help a student in your life become the entrepreneur of their own future? Life alone shapes us all differently, as you can tell by reading my story. Be an advocate for someone else who is different than you by taking the time to get proximate to their circumstances and situations in life. Remove labels and titles. Learn their story,

will look out for you and help you get to the finish line.” Castañeda would tell students interested in owning their own business to stay focused on the big picture. “There are a lot of details you can get bogged down with along the way—but it’s important to keep moving forward a little bit each day, even if some days it feels like you’re taking one step forward and two steps back. Do your own research, know that others have done it, and don’t be afraid to ask for help,” he said. “Make connections, stay positive, and be willing to learn from others.” Now over a year into owning the Dairy Queen, Castañeda finds the experience to be both exciting and rewarding. “The community is amazing. We have a lot of regulars—to the point where we get worried about certain customers if they haven’t stopped by in a few weeks,” he joked. “It’s so rewarding to create those special relationships. We always want to exceed customers’ expectations and ensure they have the best experience possible. It’s great to feel the support and trust they continue to give us even after the ownership change.” Castañeda also prioritizes giving back to the community he grew up in. He and several Dairy Queen team members recently visited local animal shelter Helping Paws to donate about 20 “pup cups” to the shelter dogs. “We make quite a few pup cups for customers throughout the summer, so we thought it would be a nice treat to bring over to the shelter dogs and play with them one Saturday morning,” he said. “The pups—and our team—seemed to really enjoy it.” The group also donated a cake to Turning Point, a nonprofit organization in Woodstock that provides support and shelter for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. “I just believe we’re all in this together,” said Castañeda. I also try to work with the students on our team by supporting their clubs and sports teams and working around their schedules for other activities because I know how important it is to be involved.” When it comes time for his high school students to graduate, Castañeda encourages them to invest in their futures and be thoughtful about their next steps. “I tell my high school employees that MCC is a great place to start, especially if they’re not sure what they want to do,” he said. “I made great relationships there that still make an impact in my life today.” “We’re also in the process of implementing a scholarship program for high school seniors to help support their higher education dreams,” he added. But Castañeda’s ultimate goal with the business is simple. “We just want to focus on making people happy,” he says. “After all, it is ice cream.”

that Latinx culture has had on American society. These events are open to community members and a great way to learn. After all, what you know may help someone else grow in the future. The owners of Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills are inviting the public to get a sense of the big changes ahead for the 1970s-era shopping center at the Hawthorn 2.0 Fall Kick-Off event Saturday. The gathering from noon to 2 p.m. will feature food trucks and vendors, games, live music and information about the long-awaited $252 million comprehensive transformation of the 1.3 million-square-foot mall. Admission is free but preregistration is required atbit.ly/3i4qWNh. The first 100 participants will receive a Hawthorn 2.0 swag bag. Centennial Real Estate, the Dallas-based owner of the mall, is converting the traditional shopping center into a master-planned, mixeduse development officials hope will revive the aging center and create a new sense of place. The Hawthorn 2.0 redevelopment will add new restaurants, retailers, outdoor venues, hundreds of luxury apartments and other features to the mall property at routes 21 and 60. Work began early this year with the demolition of the former Sears anchor store on the southeast side of the mall. Since then, the building has been removed and the groundwork for what will become a new Main Street-style entry known as Hawthorn Row is ongoing. Water, sanitary and storm sewers are in place and work on underground gas and electrical service is in progress, according to Mike Atkinson, Vernon Hills’ community develop-

Hawthorn Row will include 313 luxury apartments, 83,342 square feet of commercial space, a 12,500-square-foot patio for public entertainment and other activities, and a 570-space parking garage The foundation for the parking garage is about half-done, Atkinson said. When that’s complete, pre-stressed concrete panels will be placed to form the enclosure, he added. Retail and residential construction will follow when the garage enclosure is complete. The retail portion is expected to open next summer

Elderday Center to open Elgin campus The Elderday Center will be opening a satellite campus (Elderday North) in November at the First Christian Church Ministry Center in Elgin. The center has been serving the community for 30 years through the therapeutic adult day services program. Elderday Center’s therapeutic daily activity program provides daytime structure for up to 35 participants. The center provides a nutritious lunch and two snacks each day, along with therapeutic social activities, music therapy, expressive art activities, therapeutic activities with pets, exercises, and activities of daily living. The “Pearls” (members) are well cared for. Elderday serves older adults with mild to moderate memory loss or physical dysfunction, as well as family caregivers of all ages. Located in the Bethany Lutheran Ministry Center at 328 W. Wilson St. in Batavia, Elderday Center has primarily served the Tri-Cities and surrounding town-

ships providing essential services for vulnerable seniors and their atrisk family caregivers. Elderday Center is now beginning its phase two project to serve the northern portion of Kane County. Its mission is to provide

quality therapeutic day services, to promote independence in older adults, and to provide support and education for their caregivers. One of Elderday’s key objectives is to allow participants to remain in a positive home en-

vironment, within the general community, for as long as safely possible. Through the Seniors Helping Seniors division, they also provide in-home compassionate care to seniors in need. Seniors Helping Seniors has been serving the Fox Valley area for six years and provides quality care for seniors who want to stay home. As the name denotes, 90% of the caregivers are age 60 or older. During National Hispanic Heritage Month (September D 15 to October 15) we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to this country as well as all the contributions to our local communities as we celebrate their heritage and culture. Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community. The 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month observance theme: “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.” The theme invites us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and to reflect on how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto our resilience and hope. It encourages us to reflect on all of the contributions Hispanics have made in the past, and will continue to make in the future. It is also a reminder that we are stronger together. Let’s join in the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by reflecting on the contributions of our Hispanic neighbors. When John first had the idea for a clothing company for young men, his mother taught him how to sew and supported him by allowing her house to be taken over to grow the business. Wool ski hats with their tops tied off with fishing line were popular at the time, and John noticed them being sold for $20, which he considered overpriced. He went home and sewed about 90 hats with his next-door neighbor. They sold their homemade hats for $10 each on the corner of Jamaica Avenue and made $800 in a single day in 1992. After the hats, they began sellingscreen-printedT-shirts. To break into the market, they soldon consignment and at large events around the Northeast.To make ends meet, John held a full-time job at Red Lobster, working on the FUBU business in between shifts. Sensing potential, John and his mother mortgaged their house for $100,000 to generate start-up capital. In addition to Brown, he recruited longtime friends J. Alexander Martin and Keith Perrin into the business, and began sewing the FUBU logo onto hockey jerseys, sweatshirts, and T-shirts. They loaned about 10 of the hockey jerseys out to rappers for their music videos for 2 years and got product placements in about 30 videos. They were perceived as a large clothing brand, despite being a relatively small company and stores started requesting their brand. In 1993, he convinced LL Cool J, an old neighborhood friend, to wear a FUBU T-shirt for a promotional campaign. Later, while filming a 30-second advertising spot for The Gap, LL Cool J wore a FUBU hat in the commercial and incorporated the line “for us, by us” in his rapping.

Between 1992 and 1994, John received $300,000 in orders and also an offer for participating inMacy’sat a Las Vegas fashion trade show, MAGIC. They had to take out a second mortgage of his mother’s house in order to fulfill the orders. After being turned down by 27 banks for a loan, his mother used the last of their money to take out an advertisement in the NY Times. As a result of the ad, FUBU made a deal with Samsung Textiles, allowing them to complete their orders. FUBU has earned over $6 billion in global sales. FUBU is featured at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture.

In 2016, Shark Tank won an Emmy Award, and won Outstanding Reality Program from 2012-2014. John invested in Bubba’s-Q Boneless Ribs on Season 5 of Shark Tank and has helped grow the company from $154,000 in sales to $16 million in 3 yearsIn 2017. After investing in Bombas Socks on Season 6 of Shark Tank, total sales for the company increased from $450,000 in the first nine months to $12 million.For every pair of socks sold, Bombas donates a pair to someone in need.

Sharing Facts about the U.S Hispanic Population The U.S. Hispanic population reached 62.1 million in 2020, up from 50.5 million in 2010. The 23% increase in the Hispanic population was faster than the nation’s growth rate (+7%), but a slower increase than in the Asian population (+36%). In 2020, Hispanics made up nearly one-in-five people in the U.S. (19%), up from 16% in 2010 and just 5% in 1970. The number of Latinos who say they are multiracial has increased dramatically. More than 20 million Latinos identified with more than one race on the 2020 census, up from just 3 million in 2010. The increase could be due to a number of factors, includingchanges to the census formthat make it easier for people to identify with multiple races and growing racial diversity among Latinos. Growth in multiracial Latinos comes primarily from those who identify as White and “some other race” (i.e., those who write in a response to the race question) – a population that grew from 1.6 million to 17.0 million over the past decade. At the same time, the number of Latinos who identify as White

and no other race declined from 26.7 million to 12.6 million The share of U.S. Hispanics with college experience has increased since 2010. About 42% of U.S. Hispanic adults ages 25 and older had at least some college experience in 2019, up from 36% in 2010. More Hispanic women than Hispanic men have attended college, though the share with some college experience or more increased among both Hispanic women (38% to 45%) and Hispanic men (33% to 39%). Overall, the share of Hispanics with a bachelor’s degree or more education increased during this period, from 13% to 18%. The number of Latinos enrolled in college also increased from 2010 to 2019, from 2.9 million to 3.6 million. In 2019, women made up a significantly higher share of Latino college students than men, 56% vs. 44%. (A gender gap in college enrollment exists among all racial groups.) Among all U.S. college students, the share of Latinos enrolled in college increased from 14% in 2010 to 19% in 2019.

Gage Park Choir is officially launching this month Gage Park Choir, the newest and 12th addition to Chicago Children’s Choir’s neighborhood choirs across the city, is officially launching this month, in the neighborhood populated by Hispanic residents. An Open House will take place next Tuesday, Sept 21, for the choir organizers to meet the local community and answer questions, talk about the choir’s affordable and community-based after-school programs, and music education initiatives that explore diverse languages, music styles and cultures. Singers from other existing choirs will also be present to share from first-person perspective on how they connect with young people across the city—and globe—breaking down barriers of race, religion, and socioeconomics, forging life-long friendships along the way. The new choir is conducted by Veronica Roman-Meyer, a bilingual music educator. Born and raised in the Chicagoland area, Veronica draws from her Puerto Rican and Mexican American heritage to guide her use of inclusive teaching strategies and the study and performance of music representing diverse cultures and identities. Research shows that Latinos have been disproportionately impacted by mental health issues during Covid-19 pandemic. (source) Latinos across the U.S. have a hard time finding mental health care services in their native language and language is a primary barrier preventing Spanish speakers in the U.S. from accessing mental health services. According to the recent data released by the American Psychological Association, only 5.5% of U.S. psychologists say they’re able to administer mental health care services in Spanish. Crisis Text Line is a nonprofit organization that provides free, 24/7 crisis

counseling via text. The service is powered by a community of volunteer Crisis Counselors who answer texts when an individual is in distress, bringing them from a moment of crisis to a cool calm moment. In a 30-hour training, the nonprofit teaches volunteers skills such as active listening and de-escalation to support texters dealing with any type of emotional or mental health challenge. Suicide among Latina youth is a major public health concern as they attempt suicide more often than any other group of female teenagers nationwide. (source) Conversations in which LatinX texters shared feelings of suicidal ideation represented over 24% due to COVID-19. (Internal Crisis Text Line data, 2021) Key Crisis Text Line Conversations Insights from January 2020-August 2021: LatinX texters tend to be younger than the CTL average. 57% of LatinX texters said they were 17 or younger, compared to 48% of CTL texters. VACUNAS ANTICOVID REDUCEN EN MÁS DEL 70% LASS HOSPITALIZACIO ONES Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Notiica - EFEsalud Además de la incidencia de las vacunas en las hospitalizaciones, estudio “Zoe Covid”, liderado por el Kings College de Londres, también revela otros datos con las respuestas a un cuestionario de 1,2 millones de adultos entre los pasados meses de diciembre y julio en el Reino Unidos. Según esta investigación, aquellos que dan positivo después de ser vacunados con las dos dosis (infección post-vacunal) tienen casi el doble de probabilidades de ser completamente asintomáticos. Asimismo, el estudio indicó que el riesgo de contraer covid de larga duración (cuando los síntomas persisten después de 28 días desde la infección) se reduce a la mitad entre los vacunados con la pauta completa. Las personas más vulnerables ante una infección post-vacunal después de recibir una dosis son los “adultos mayores frágiles” (de más de 60 años), así como otros “adultos mayores” que tienen otras patologías, como obesidad o enfermedades cardíacas, renales y pulmonares. En todos los grupos de edades, señaló la investigación, las personas que viven en zonas desfavorecidas, como entornos urbanos con alta densidad de población, tienen más posibilidades de padecer una infección después de haber sido vacunados. “Estamos en un momento crítico de la pandemia, cuando hay un aumento de los casos en todo el mundo debido a la variante delta. IRS reconoce Semana de la Pequeña Empresa: Recursos disponibles para ayudar a empleadores IR-2021-182SP, 13 de septiembre de 2021 WASHINGTON - Durante la Semana Nacional de la Pequeña Empresa, el Servicio de Impuestos Internos quiere que los propietarios de pequeñas empresas sepan que información y recursos para ayudarles a entender y cumplir sus obligaciones tributarias están disponibles gratis en IRS.gov. de negocio nuevo debe elegir entre: Año calendario: 12 meses consecutivos que comienza el 1ro de enero y termina el 31 de diciembre. Año fiscal: 12 meses consecutivos que finaliza el último día de cualquier mes excepto diciembre.

Solicite un número de identificación del empleador (EIN).

Un EIN se conoce también como el número de identificación para el impuesto federal. Se usa para identificar una empresa. La mayoría de las empresas necesitan uno de estos números. Es importante para una empresa con un EIN mantener actualizada la dirección postal, la ubicación y la parte responsable de la empresa. How Waubonsee Community College is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove will host several programs to educate and raise awareness about Latinx heritage during the National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week and National Hispanic Heritage Month. These hybrid events will commence with the college’s new Latinx Resource Center staff meet-and-greet. The Latinx Heritage Month events will honor the impact and influence that Latinx culture has had on American society. These events are open to members of the community and will be offered virtually and in-person from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. Limited space is available for in-person events. • “¡El Proceso es Bonito! The Process is Beautiful”: The Latinx Resource Center has been some years in the making. Learn more about the process from becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution, obtaining a Title V grant, and creating resources for students, family, and the community. Meet the staff managing the center via Zoom at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22. • “Curanderismo: Traditional Medicine Approaches in the Latinx World for Times of Stress and Anxiety”: will be a virtual discussion at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20. Learn how the Latinx culture is full of me-

dicinal remedies and practices. Explore different medicinal practices from a renowned curandero, Cheo Torres. • “Celebración de las Culturas Latinx: Celebration of Latinx Cultures” will be 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1. Immerse yourself in the Latinx culture by experiencing a “kermes” at the Aurora downtown campus. The “kermes” will be full of music, dancing, activities, art, food, and more. Attendees will learn about many Latinx countries and their diverse traditions. This event is in partnership with the city of Aurora’s First Fridays. • Poet Jacob Saenz: A virtual reading and discussion with Waubonsee’s Multicultural Literatures of the U.S. class will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4. At this event, Saenz will read and discuss his work in the contexts of reading and writing poetry, literary analysis (form, content, and subject), Latinx identity, masculinity, urban life, heterosexual love and relationships, and/or literary traditions. Held via Zoom. • “Poet Jacob Saenz: Throwing the Crown” reading and discussion will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6. Hear the author read from his work and have a conversation with Waubonsee English faculty member Dan Portincaso about the development of his journey as a poet and about the writing

Rosa Alicia Clemente, community organizer, producer, independent journalist, and scholar-activist, will talk about her experience affirming her racial and political blackness as an Afro/Black Puerto Rican woman. • “Indigenous Pláticas: Exploring and Reconnecting with Indigenous Philosophies and Practices” will be a hybrid discussion with Francisco Escobar, education and content creator, from 4:30-6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11. Escobar, a descendant of the Aymaran people, is a cultural reconciliation advocate who believes educational practices and spaces can revitalize one’s ancestral culture in the 21st century. His experience with educators in New York City, Chile, and Panama will provide a rich learning opportunity for all. • “Pride: Orgullo in My Heritage and Sexuality” is a hybrid panel presentation from 5:30-6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13. The discussion will focus on intersectionality and how being a member of two marginalized communities is tough. Panelists will share their experiences and struggles of living in a conservative Latinx culture while ex-

ploring their identity and coming out to their friends and family. • “De Mi Cocina, A La Tuya: From My Kitchen to Yours” will be an online, community-based cookbook that features different Latinx dishes shared by members of the Waubonsee community. Everyone is invited to view previously submitted recipes and submit new ones. • Latinx Experiences Today Posterboards: Catch a glimpse of the Latinx experience by visiting the poster board displays during a rotating schedule on each of Waubonsee’s four campuses through Oct. 15.
