The Many Benefits of Community Colleges BY DEVIN MORRISSEY
$30,000 in debt. For students who begin their higher education at a community college and transfer to a university, the cost is significantly reduced, as the typical degree from a community college costs about $15,120. No matter where you begin, you’ll have access to the same federal and private student loan options to help offset the cost. Choosing to begin your college career at a community college can stretch the loans that you receive even further. Scholarships, work-study opportunities, and grants can help ease the burden of cost. The good news is there are a ton of scholarships and grants available. Most programs also have a variety of work-study opportunities. Knowing which options of payment for school are available to you is essential to your success in your programs. To find options for yourself, speak to the financial aid office at your chosen community college, or use the US Department of Labor’s scholarship search tool.

Each year students graduating high school are forced to face the realities of their next steps. Finding an appropriate college for themselves (and their future career) is one of those steps. Community college is a great alternative to traditional universities for the student who is reluctant to go to college, or who simply doesn’t feel ready. Community colleges can make the transition to a university much smoother and much more cost-effective than beginning a college career at a traditional university. They offer many different types of educational programs like associate degrees, skilled trade degrees, vocational certificates, and transferable credits to obtain a bachelor’s degree. It gives college students much more flexibility in their decisions. How do you find the best school for you or your soon-to-be graduate? Follow along.
Plan for College
Transitioning to life as a college student can be a stressful and uncertain time for anyone. There are several ways to help stay engaged in a college career. Whether you are a freshly graduated high school student, or an established adult in the working world who would like to enhance or change their career situation, planning is essential to having a successful college experience. Community colleges are a great option for non-traditional students. For students who aren’t ready to make a full-time commitment to college, or who have already begun their lives and are going back to fill gaps in their knowledge, community college offers a flexible schedule without committing to moving to a new area. Students are able to take classes at their own pace. They can then decide whether to transfer to a university after they’ve established school as a part of their lives. The flexibility offered also provides options for students who may have struggled in high school or who took a long break from school. Concordia University reports that as many as 50 percent of adults can’t read at an eighth-grade level. For these individuals, the idea of attending a full-time University may be overwhelming. Community college is a way to ease back into academics while still having all the perks and resources that come from an institute of higher education.
Future Career Plans
We’ve all been asked this question: What do you want to be when you grow up? This can be the hardest question to answer when you are just starting your college career. The best part about community college? You
Flexibility
don’t necessarily have to have a future career plan in place. Instead of spending thousands of dollars at a private university pursuing a degree you may not be sure of, classes at community colleges cost less and allow for the opportunity to explore other options. It allows the opportunity for students to take classes that may not pertain to their declared degree, but that offer insight into other opportunities for them. Community colleges and their relatively low tuition fees allow students to explore what their future could be. Community college also gives students the time to attend college for credit while selecting the appropriate university for them, without missing out on any of the normal college resources. The curriculum of community colleges can be equally as challenging as a standard University curriculum. Community colleges offer vocational programs and certificate programs that allow graduates to begin their careers almost instantly after they graduate.
Location
Location, Location, location! We have heard this term before and it applies heavily when choosing a college. Attending col-
lege in a local area can be more affordable in terms of housing costs. The distance from your hometown to a college will play a major role in what financial burdens are taken on throughout schooling. Most colleges also offer a multitude of locations whether remote or on campus. This helps to extend collegiate services to more areas at a more affordable price. Community colleges offer remote classes as well as online classes. Meaning that location can actually be a null issue when searching for community colleges. Many private, public, and community colleges offer online courses. Non-traditional students may find it difficult to physically attend classes due to scheduling conflicts. By offering an online option, students can obtain a higher education without relocating or changing their schedule.
More Cost-Effective
There are plenty of reasons that people are skeptical to move on to higher education, but the most common is that college is expensive! Overall students who attend college fair better in the end with finances than those that do not attend college though. Most students graduate with around
If you plan to work while you are in college, community college is hands down the best option for you. Community colleges offer far more night classes and online courses than traditional colleges. It gives you the opportunity to explore topics and interests you may not have otherwise pursued. The resources offered at a community college are identical to a four-year university. There are resources like academic counseling, career counseling, and research opportunities. Since class sizes are relatively small, often 20 students or less, it allows for more one-on-one time with professors. Since professors at community colleges are not typically doing research on the side, they have more time to devote to students. This allows students to transition from high school to college with more support and attention. Community college allows students to move at their own pace. Taking a full course load that leads to a graduation date in 4 years is not for everyone. Community colleges allow students to begin their education in a more relaxed and financially acceptable setting. Students get the option to move to their dream school once they have completed two years of education. It allows students to live at home while attending school for the first two years, or for the entirety of their college career. Far gone are the days where community colleges get a bad reputation in the collegiate world. Now more than ever they are a great option for students who are unsure of their future careers, their transition into college, or even non-traditional students wanting to dip their toe in higher education.

The technology has been around since 1878, when Thomas Edison opened his Edison Speaking Phonograph Co. and gave birth to the first 78 rpm gramophone records. By the 1940s, vinyl records were the medium of choice. In the 1970s, 8-track tapes and cassettes put a dent in vinyl sales, and compact discs did the same in the 1980s. The pandemic did in lots of products, but vinyl records survive. “It’s never gone away,” Steve Warrenfeltz, 69, owner ofKiss The Skyrecord store in Batavia, says of the vinyl records that make up the vast majority of his sales. “Even during the CD era, there were deejays keeping the format alive.” That streak was threatened in spring 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to in-person sales during what Warrenfeltz calls “the first year of weird.” “We were shut down for 68 days,” he says. “I resorted to curbside service and home delivery.” With sales down 90% and his lease about to run out, Warrenfeltz thought his record run might be finished. He considered retirement, but the pandemic absence fueled a desire for vinyl records. “When we reopened, it got back to normal, or even better than normal,” Warrenfeltz says. “By the end of October, I made up everything we lost.” The pandemic introduced vinyl to a younger crowd. “My customer base was changing,” Warrenfeltz says. Girls as young as 12 are buying turntables and records because of being forced to stay home. “Well, we’re staying home and listening to mom and dad’s records and it sounds great,” Warrenfeltz remembers his newest customers telling him as they bought new vinyl albums by Lana Del Rey, Harry Styles and Taylor Swift. Warrenfeltz’s favorite band, The Kinks, burst on the music scene in the 1960s, and he collects pre-World War I records of blues, jazz and the “hillbilly music” that his parents, Bernard and Mary Warrenfeltz, introduced to him. But he also listens to the new music popular with his young customers. “I’ve become a Taylor Swift fan,” he says as if he’s surprised to hear himself say that. His top two sellers are “Rumours,”the Fleetwood Mac album that first appeared on vinyl in 1977, and the 1967 album “Are You Experienced” by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. “We haven’t been able to restock ‘Rumours’ since July,” Warrenfeltz says, noting the supply chain problems caused by the pandemic require him to explain the meaning of “back order” to customers. While streaming accounts for 84% of music revenue, sales of vinyl recordsare up more than 85% in the first half of 2021, and the $467.4 million in revenue is a 94% increase over the same period last year, according to theRecording Industry Association of America. Production isn’t keeping up with demand. “What I get now is nowhere near what I or-

IN SPITE of being threatened by new technologies and the pandemic, vinyl records sales are strong, says Steve Warrenfeltz, owner of Kiss The Sky record shop in Batavia.

der,” Warrenfeltz says, referencing the example of “Faces,” a 2014 mixtape by Mac Miller that just came out on vinyl. “I ordered 20 copies of it, and I got two.” That reminds him of a chemical shortage that cut supply and raised prices during his pre-record-store corporate career as president and CEO of Old World Trading Co., which owned Peak Antifreeze. “We made more money, but that was stressful,” he says. The new vinyl records he sells average about $25 each. Used records usually cost less. “I sold a copy of Peter Frampton’s ‘Frampton Coves Alive!’ over the weekend for five bucks,” Warrenfeltz says. He also sold a stillsealed copy of David Bowie’s 1983 “Let’s Dance” album, featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar, for $300. Much of the credit for vinyl’s revival goes
toRecord Store Day, which sponsors events to promote independently owned record stores, includingBlack Fridaysales on the day after Thanksgiving. “I do a lottery for entrance into the store,” says Warrenfeltz, who will open his doors at 7 a.m. Nov. 26 and will start taking reservations soon atkissthesky.net. It’s all good for Warrenfeltz, who has three grown children and three grandkids. When he started the store in 1996 with his now-retired friend Mike Messerschmidt, Warrenfeltz had a five-year plan. Twenty-five years later, he expects this year’s vinyl sales to be 50% to 60% higher than last year. “I’m going to hang in there and see what happens,” Warrenfeltz says. “I’m going to keep doing this until the wave isn’t there anymore.”

‘Best day of his life’
Palatine boy battling leukemia gets special treatment from police BY ELENA FERRARIN
For Reflejos
Eight-year-old Angel Becerra has been dealing with a lot this year, what with getting chemotherapy for leukemia and attending classes remotely to protect his weakened immune system. Despite the challenges, Angel has remained cheerful and talks about wanting to become a police officer — a resolve reinforced after he was treated to a one-of-a-kind day by the Palatine Police Department. “The truth is, they surprised us, because I didn’t think they would do so much,” his mother, Araceli Barrera, said. “I thought they would just show him the patrol car. But they took us all to the police department and they showed him everything.” A third-grader at Virginia Lake Elementary School, Angel was diagnosed with leukemia in February. The idea to organize a special day for him came from Palatine police counselor Melina Dominguez, who met Angel’s mom and was moved to do something special for the boy upon hearing of his illness and his dream of joining law enforcement. The two women first met at a local business while Dominguez was putting up flyers to promote an event for Spanish-speaking residents. Then the two saw each other again at Partners for Our Communities, a community center where Dominguez has an office. Cmdr. David Brandwein, who is in charge of neighborhood-based policing, also happened to be there. “(Angel’s mom) kind of told the story to us, and we thought, maybe we can have him
stop by the police station, take a tour, take a look around and meet some people,” Brandwein said. So Dominguez and Brandwein worked together to make it happen on Oct. 14. The day started with the two going to Angel’s house, where the family had fun taking pictures next to the squad car with its lights activated. Then Angel, his little brother, Marcos, 4, and their mother were driven to the police station, where Angel got to wear a uniform shirt and was greeted by a line of police officers who clapped and cheered for him. Angel got an in-depth tour of the station: He checked out roll call, the shooting range, the radio area and the report writing room, and he met Police Chief Dave Daigle and Deputy Chief Bill Nord, along with many other officers. “The police garage seemed to be his favorite; he liked to see all the squad cars parked there,” Brandwein said. At the end of the tour, Angel was given a bag of toys left over from the Toys for Tots collection. “He wasn’t shy, that’s for sure,” Brandwein said. “He went up to people and said ‘hello’ and made himself right at home.” Angel was a bit more shy on the phone later with a reporter, preferring to leave the talking to his mother. “He liked it so much,” she said. “He was so happy. He told me it was the best day of his life.” Angel’s doctor at Advocate Lutheran Hospital in Park Ridge says Angel is responding well to treatment, Barrera said.

A lesson in local government Launch of agency in Hanover Park shows value of cooperation with diverse sources
The fact that a new social services agency is celebrating its grand opening in Hanover Park this week may not in itself be a remarkable feat for a suburban community. Suburban government leaders and business and public assistance agencies work together all the time to try to boost development and strengthen the many human networks that go into building a comfortable quality of life for all. But the Hanover Park experience does provide insights into just how suburban officials must work cooperatively with diverse sources, including other government agencies, to make positive things happen. In Hanover Park’s case, the positive thing is the opening of a new Partners for Our Communities South branch, following the model of the Partners for Our Com-
munities facility in Palatine. Hanover Park Village President Rod Craig toured the Palatine agency two years ago, and recognized the value such a program could have for his community. Hanover Township is home to the second-highest concentration of immigrants in Illinois. Partners for Our Communities, a 30-year-old agency that operates out of the Community Resource Center in Palatine hosted by Northwest Community Healthcare, helps connect immigrant and refugee families with resources for health and wellness, education, civic involvement, access to justice, domestic violence prevention and more. Craig was so impressed with what he saw in 2019 that he introduced the agency to Hanover Township Supervisor Brian McGuire,
who helped find space at the township’s Astor Avenue Community Center in Hanover Park. Then, officials turned to Amita Health Medical Group in Hanover Park, and that led to the donation of a nearly 1,700-squarefoot space at 1515 Lake Street on the DuPage County side of Hanover Park. Along the way, state Rep. Fred Crespo, a Hoffman Estates Democrat, got involved and suggested the project seek a grant as an Illinois Welcome Center. The community won the grant, and Liza Gutierrez became the new facility’s Welcome Center supervisor. Guttierez had worked for the Palatine POC branch for 10 years before Craig met her on his 2019 tour and persuaded her to run — successfully as it turned out — for village board. He told our Eric Peterson he believes her background helps lead to a more
well-rounded village board. A social services agency. A suburban mayor. A township supervisor. A private health service. A state representative. It can take a broad cross section of individuals to get a complex project off the ground, and indeed all of these officials were additionally helped by countless other staff members and local representatives in launching POC South. Specifically, the result of their efforts will be an agency that helps refugees and other immigrants get on their feet, not just to enjoy the benefits of a suburban quality of life but also to contribute to it. And in a broader sense, their work also is an object lesson in the successful cooperation that strengthens the roots of good local government.y serving immigrants and refugees.

I needed a little more support, and they were able to offer that to me.” Through her classes and professors, Garcia learned how to work with and advocate for victims of domestic violence and landed a job working at a domestic violence shelter. “Being able to connect with the victims is very important to me, and I can because of my personal experiences. I’m not only giving back in domestic violence populations, but also in my Hispanic population and women,” said Garcia. “If I can help just a little bit, even just one person, I think that’s a world of difference.” Garcia is pursuing her associate of applied science degree – human services generalist with plans to graduate in summer 2022.

Joliet Junior College helps Latinx students reach their goals
JJC wants all students to meet their goals, and the college provides special services and support for populations who are underrepresented or may have unique obstacles to overcome. As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, JJC’s Latinx student population is at nearly 30 percent, making this group of students’ needs exceptionally important to JJC. Special resources are available for those who jspeak Spanish. “We are working hard to help Latinx students engage, especially those with limited English,” said Michelle Roman-Garcia, JJC’s Multicultural Student Affairs Director. “It’s key for them to start as early as possible so we can get them all the help they need to navigate college.” JJC is the best choice for Latinx students not only because they will get support through every step of their college experience, but also because JJC offers so many programs that lead to high-paying, in-demand jobs that only require an associate degree such
as automotive, culinary arts and more. JJC makes it easy for students to find a field they’re passionate about, whether their goal is to get into the workforce quickly or to transfer smoothly to a four-year school. Students can choose to complete one class per semester or finish their degree in as little as 18 months. Stories like that of first-generation college student Eliana Melero demonstrate how JJC is committed to every student’s success. “There was a time in college where I lacked the motivation to attend my classes and felt like giving up at one point,” she said. “I hit a point where I thought college wasn’t the best route for me. After, talking to my advisers and my parents, I found that drive to re-focus myself. I want people to know that no matter what your struggle is, that it does not define your ability to be successful.” Melero was unsure of her direction when she first arrived at JJC, but her time at the college transformed her. She found mentors at the college who inspired her, and became involved as a leader in many clubs like Latinos Unidos and the International Student Club. She recently graduated from the college, and plans to continue pursuing her education with the goal of getting a doctorate degree. She wants people to know that JJC is a place to grow, discover their passion, and find their path. “Without JJC, I would not have known that I am capable of being great!” she said. “I am forever thankful for my experiences at JJC as they have shaped my life into who I am today. JJC has also changed me as I grew into a leader and met many people who have impacted me in such a positive way. I found my passion at JJC.” Fall 2021 classes will be on campus and online, giving students flexibility and options. Students can access a big selection of support programs like financial aid and scholarships, the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, Disability Resources, tutoring, and so much more. Special Olympics launches First-Ever Fitness Campaign aimed at Hispanic athletes with intellectual disabilities For the first time in its over 50-year history, Special Olympics launched a fitness campaign aimed at Hispanic athletes with intellectual disabilities. The campaign, Escuela de Fuerza, which translates to School of Strength, drops at a key moment during the pandemic when many athletes with intellectual disabilities are working out from home to avoid public spaces. According to a New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst study, people with intellectual disabilities are almost six times more likely to die from COVID-19. Additionally, Hispanic communities have been especially hit hard during the pandemic, with COVID hospitalizations higher among the Hispanic population1. Escuela de Fuerza was developed in partnership with Special Olympics Global Ambassadors and MLB superstars New York Second Baseman Gleyber Torres and Chicago Catcher Willson Contreras, who are also featured as commentators throughout the workout series. The series targets Hispanic athletes around the United States in their late teens through early thirties, and is led by five Special Olympics athletes: Tomás Monsiváis, Abigail Zamorano, and Julián Rodriguez from Texas, Belem Chavez from Illinois, and Ramón Jiménez from Nevada. To promote health equity and reach a Hispanic audience, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention partnered with Special Olympics to fund Escuela de Fuerza. Escuela de Fuerza is based off the original and widely popular School of Strength fitness campaign that was launched in March 2020.
Housed on www.SpecialOlympics.org, Escuela de Fuerza features four workout videos with varying levels of difficulty, accompanied by downloadable toolkits for coaches and caregivers that feature recipes, games, and health tips encouraging athletes with intellectual disabilities to commit to a lifetime of fitness habits. Data collected by Special Olympics reveal that over 60% of Special Olympics athletes are overweight or obese, and one in five lower their blood pressure from high to normal after taking part in
Special Olympics fitness programming. “Now, more than ever, all athletes, especially those with intellectual disabilities, need to keep their bodies fit and strong in a challenging routine. I had lots of fun filming this campaign with Special Olympics and I hope all Hispanic athletes, no matter what fitness level, enjoy these workout routines as much as I do. I very much support Special Olympics making it a priority to reach young men and women with intellectual disabilities in the Hispanic communities,”
shared New York Second Baseman Gleyber Torres. “I’ve been a long-time supporter of Special Olympics, and last year I joined the organization as an Ambassador to further my support of their mission to end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities. Over the years, I met many Spanish-speaking athletes with intellectual disabilities and made an immediate connection. Their determination inspired me to work on the Escuela de Fuerza campaign to get others excited about working out and getting fit,” shared Chicago Catcher Willson Contreras. Fitness plays a vital role in both physical and mental health as well as sports performance. To date, over 150,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities have taken part in Special Olympics fitness programming worldwide. “Our athletes are fierce competitors who should have the same opportunities as everyone else to be active, work out, and be healthy. We are changing the face of inclusive health by giving our athletes opportunities to enhance their fitness,” said Special Olympics Chief Health Officer Dr. Alicia Bazzano. “People with intellectual disabilities die on average 16 to 20 years earlier than those without intellectual disability often due to preventable causes. Becoming and staying fit can reduce those gaps. Escuela de Fuerza is a fantastic series of videos and materials to encourage our Hispanic community of athletes to not only stretch their fitness goals, but stay committed to their health journeys.”

Pedro Maldonado
adds Latin Flavor to Amazon BY HERNANDO RAMÍREZ-SANTOS
abasto.com
As soon as he graduated from college in Mexico 18 years ago, Pedro Maldonado traveled to the United States to make his way and grow professionally. However, he never imagined working in a strategic position for e-commerce giant Amazon, where he promotes Hispanic food products nationwide. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Maldonado forged his path to success with dedication and treasuring his Hispanic roots, which have always helped him advance in his professional life. With a degree in economics, he arrived in the United States with only $400 in his pocket. Yet, he continued studying and earned his master’s degree in business administration specializing in commerce and finance from Northwestern University. “It is indisputable that being Hispanic has had a lot of influence in my professional life. I have had the opportunity to work in different companies, and part of my responsibilities have been to create programs with Hispanic packaged grocery products that include food, beauty, and personal care items,” said Maldonado in an interview with Abasto. Maldonado’s first job in the United States was in Chicago, at La Bodega Inc, one of the first businesses that began importing Mexican products to that specific region of the
PEDRO MALDONADO
United States. This first work experience, he said, greatly influenced his professional growth. “I learned not only the value of hard work, to not be afraid to roll up my sleeves and to work in areas that were not what I was expecting. But more importantly, I was there when the Hispanic products industry was starting, and I got to see how inefficiencies in the supply chain increased the cost of the product.” Throughout his professional career in
this country, Maldonado said that being Hispanic has been very positive. However, he acknowledges that, on numerous occasions, he has been the only Hispanic at the table when companies make business decisions. He also believes that his career has evolved, to a certain extent, as the Hispanic products industry has grown. He began working with La Bodega Inc., then moved on to Asian company Five Continents, and advanced his career with Central Grocers, the largest food distributor in the Midwest.
He developed Hispanic grocery programs from the ground up for them. Later, Maldonado explored another retail sector working for CVS Pharmacy, where he helped develop the CVS Pharmacy Y Más Hispanic concept. Thanks to his experience and expertise in physical stores and handling Hispanic grocery products, Amazon recruited Maldonado in 2018. “For me, joining Amazon was like a dream. If you look at the innovation going on right now, Amazon sure leads the way with technology.” Another aspect of Amazon that has always caught Maldonado’s attention is its culture of focusing first and foremost on customers and the opportunity it offers its employees to develop and grow within the company. About a year and a half ago, Maldonado had the opportunity to join the Hispanic category management team that seeks to improve the experience of Hispanic customers in their interaction with Amazon. In addition, always keeping their culture in mind and understanding how much Hispanics can bring to any company, Maldonado joined Amazon’s Latinos@ group as its vice president. This group, made up of Amazon employees, is dedicated to attracting Hispanic talent to the e-commerce giant, which has a workforce of 1.3 million workers, 7.5% of whom are Hispanic
Firehouse Dogs to leave Schaumburg building BY ERIC PETERSON
For reflejos
Firehouse Dogs in Schaumburg, named the home of the best hot dog in Illinois by Travel + Leisure magazine in 2018, is in search of new digs. Restaurateur Jim Gritsonis said he and business partner Frank Paolucci are seeking to move because of what he said is a rent increase at the restaurant’s location at 1820 W. Irving Park Road. The two submitted an offer on a site six blocks away on Irving Park Road in Hanover Park. “Schaumburg has been so generous to us,” Gritsonis said. “It pains us to leave Schaumburg. Nothing compares.” The co-owners still are looking for space in Schaumburg, though the Hanover Park location has become the lead contender. Grit-
sonis said he expects to close the current location about a week after Halloween. If a new location is found soon, Gritsonis and Paolucci hope to reopen there in January -- with all the familiar firehouse decor back in place. While Gritsonis already had restaurant experience before the restaurant opening in 2016, Paolucci was new to the industry apart from having cooked for his fellow Chicago firefighters for more than two decades. The firefighting gear and mementos that help the restaurant live up to its name are largely from his own collection. Both partners are lifelong Chicagoans who wanted to be true to the mom-and-pop businesses that have always given the city’s neighborhoods their character. They said they felt such a restaurant would be just as appreciated in the suburbs.

Elgin Youth Symphony program aims to remove roadblocks to classical music education BY RICK WEST
For reflejos
One by one, fourth-graders gasped with excitement as they each opened their recently acquired instrument cases and got their first looks at the prizes inside. The students at Oakhill Elementary School in Streamwood were the first participants in a pilot program started by the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra. Starter Strings is a free program that brings classical music education, in this case -- or these cases -- the violin, to students who otherwise might not have the opportunity. “For a long time, we’ve understood there are obstacles to participating in classical music,” said Eric Larson, executive director of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra. “Traditionally, it’s been for, honestly, a privileged, white audience with means.” Starter Strings is a first step in addressing that at a grassroots level. Matthew Sheppard, EYSO’s artistic director and youth symphony conductor, is teaching the first school-year-long session. “We know there are roadblocks to music instruction, especially at EYSO where we don’t have a ground level,” Sheppard said. “People come in with at least a year or two of experience on their instruments, if not seven, eight, or nine years. “We want to remove the roadblocks to students who otherwise wouldn’t get off the ground,” he said. EYSO worked with the Elgin Area School District U-46 school to offer the program, which meets once a week after school. It was opened to all interested fourth-graders. The students received instruments that they could take home and use for the year for free.

ELGIN YOUTH Symphony Orchestra artistic director and Youth Symphony conductor Matthew Sheppard helps fourth-grader Luis Medina with finger placement during a Starter Strings class at Oakhill Elementary School in Streamwood.
With 49 fourth-graders at the school, Sheppard thought they would be lucky to get seven of them to sign up. School administrators were hoping for 10 to 15. But 36 signed up and have attended the first three weeks of classes. “We got such an amazingly overwhelming response,” Sheppard said. “It kind of blew our socks off.” Oakhill music teacher Kristine Cooper, who helps during the sessions along with a couple of other teachers, said the enthusiasm from the kids “warms my heart.”
“It just shows the kids want it. They’re craving it,” she said. “But a lot of these families can’t afford it on their own, so this free program is so awesome for them.” Cooper said it’s great for the kids because they are learning “stuff that they’re not going to get in my classroom.” “Yes, we do lots of instruments, and I can cram an immense amount of stuff into my limited time,” she said, “but this is so far above and beyond.” After two sessions of laying the groundwork and learning some basics, students received their instruments during the third week of class. “Violin is not an immediate gratification instrument,” Sheppard said. “Not that you need the immediate gratification, but you want to feel like you’re progressing and you’re learning. So that’s what we focus on every week.” Like just about every other kid in the class, 9-year-old Jorge Rodriguez had never before held a violin, let alone try to play one. “I thought it was going to be easy, and it turns out it’s the complete opposite,” he said. Still, he was undeterred. “It’s pretty cool, so I want to keep going,” he said, though he wasn’t in a hurry to go home and practice. “My arms are tired.” The pilot program is funded by a combination of individual donations and regular fundraising. The use of the rental instruments was donated. Larson said the EYSO has plans to grow the program by expanding to other schools while keeping it free for families. “That’s a big part of the point of the program, removing that obstacle,” he said.
