How Christmas is celebrated in Mexico

If you want to experience the local culture and immerseyourself in avariety of local traditions, Christmas is one of the besttimesto volunteer in Mexico.

In Mexico, Christmas isn’t aone-time event. It’s afullmonth of celebrations, marked with family feasts and lots of piñatas.

Startingon12December and lasting until 6January, Christmascelebrations in Mexico have their own flair.There are candlelit processions, elaboratenativityscenes, Spanish Christmas carols,dancing andfireworks.

While traditions likeChristmas trees and Santa Claus have foundaplace in Mexican festivities, the holidaycelebrations are firmly rooted in Spanish andindigenous culture.

Abrief history of Christmas in Mexico

When Catholicism arrived in Mexico through colonialism during the sixteenth century, Spanish priests brought with them many Christian holidays, including Christmas.

Over the centuries, these traditions influenced the indigenous culture, creating aChristmas experience thatyou won’t find anywhereelse in theworld.

DIA DE LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE

Mexicanpilgrims from all over the countrytraveltothe Basilica of Guadalupe, a church located in the heartofMexico City, to visitlaVirgen Morena –the VirginMary.

Afterwards, fireworksare setoff,parades fill the streets and live musical performances takeplace throughout the city

Thepopular Christmastime food, buñuelos are soldbythe dozen fromstreetvendors, or made in manyfamilies’ kitchens.

POSADAS

From 16 to 24 December, processions re-enacting Mary and Joseph’s search for sheltertakeplace in Mexico.

Children walk from house to house singing thetraditionalLas Posadas song and asking homeowners to letthem in.

Everynight, the processions end at adifferenthouse for afiesta, with an abundance of food, drink and, of course, piñatas.

NACIMIENTOS

Many Mexican familiescelebratethe festive season with elaborateNativityscenes in their homes. Theseare called “nacimientos” and starton16December.

As time goes on, different characters are added to the display. On ChristmasEve,the baby Jesus is put into his crib, and on 25 January, theThree Kings maketheir wayonto the scene.

Thetradition is not reserved for people’s homes. Many town centres in Mexico are known for going all out with hugereplicas of the manger,animals, Jesus, the shepherds, and Joseph and Mary

PASTORELAS

Pastorelasare theatrical productions about the shepherds’ journeytosee the newbornbaby Jesus.

In these plays, the characters encounter various obstacles,suchasdevilsand angels tryingtoinfluence whichpaththeyshould take.

VILLANCICOS

In Mexico, Christmas carols are called “villancicos”

Some of these songs are translations of popular English carols such as “Silent Night”, while others, like“TheFishes in the River” (Los Peces en el Río), are unique to Mexican culture.

NOCHEBUENA

Nochebuena, directly translated as the

“goodnight”, means ChristmasEve in Spanish.

On this day, manyfamilies will attend midnight mass together,followed by afamily dinner.

Fireworks are also common, and there are poinsettia flowers (flores de Nochebuena) foundall over citycentres, as well as outside andinside people’s homes.

Dia de Reyes

Dia de Reyes is Three Kings’Day,and this is when children in Mexico receive gifts to symbolise those brought by the Three Wise Men.

Families and friends will alsoshare acustomaryRosca de Reyes, asweetbread baked in the shape of awreath. There are babyJesus figurines hidden inside the wreath, and whoever finds one is expected to hostthe Dia de la Candelaria party on 2February.

DIA DE LACANDELARIA

DiadelaCandelaria marks the end of Mexico’s Christmas celebrations. On this day, localpeople will taketheirChrist figurines to church to receivea blessing.

PONCHE NAVIDEÑO

Ponche Navideño is ahot fruitpunch traditionally served during Christmas celebrations.

Guzman yGomez Mexican Kitchen opened its firstAmerican location in Naperville in January2019.

Next month’s opening of the 2,800-squarefoot Schaumburg eaterywill startwith offerings of $5 burritos and bowls, $3 chipotle-seasoned fries andfountain sodas.

First-GenerationCollege Graduate Pays It Forward to Hispanic Community

Lori Duarte,RN, continues educational journey to better serve her patients

First-generation collegegraduate Lori Duarte, RN, can’t seem to getenough education. With abachelor’s degree in English and amaster’s degree in liberal arts, her career and educational journeyultimately led her to nursing.

After she graduates from the UniversityofColorado CollegeofNursing’s RN to BS in Nursing Pathwaythis month, Duarte will begin studies at CU Nursing’s Family Nurse Practitioner program in January, 2023.

Duarte, 42, currently works as anurse at afamily health clinic in Lafayettethatlargely serves the Hispanic community. She says becoming afamily nurse practitioner is the next logical step in her career’s evolution.

“I’dliketohaveabetter understanding of the diagnosis and how to treatit,”Duarte says. “Itwould be greattocontinue serving the Hispanic population. Isee myself and my family in thatpopulation.”

Winding road from Texas

Originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, Duarte grewup in atight-knit Hispanic family with working-class parents. Though her siblings and family graduated from high school, Duarte was highly encouraged by her mother to takeher education to the next level.

“I don’t think Iresisted the idea of going to college–I was always all for it,”she says. “But when Igraduated, I didn’t feel likeIwas finished learning.”

Duarte’s post-collegiate career led her to advocacywork at areproductive rights organization in Washington, D.C. Then she mether future husband, moved to Seattle, and worked for auniversity. She relocated to Austin, Texas to serve acountycommissioner.Her life’s work –combined with having children –piqued her interestinnursing.

“I was amazed by the women on my birth team. Iwanted my daughter to grow and find inspiration in women likethese. Then Ithought ‘whycan’t thatbeme?’Atthat point, Ihad worked in advocacy, policy, and infrastructure and was intrigued about nursing as away of putting it all together,” she says. “I wanted to learn more about the infrastructure of the body,sotospeak, and communicate it back to people.”

While her husband continued working in Seattle, Duarte enrolled in anursing program in Corpus Christi. She moved back into her childhood home after her mother offered to care for her twokids while she was earning her RN credentials.

Unfortunately,not long after the move, Duarte’s mother was diagnosed with cancer.Despite the diagnosis, Duarte stuck with the RN program through her mother’s treatments and ultimate death in Augustof2019.

“She was active until the end and even road-tripped to see Mount Rushmore, but July was her lastgood month,” Duarte says.

After taking asemester offtogrieve, Duarte resumed her RN studies at the beginning of 2020 and finished the program by the end of thatyear.

“Inmanyways, Ifeel likeIaminnursing because of her,” Duarte says of her late mother.“She was the most supportive of my serendipitous career path.”

CU Nursing and working at afederally qualified health center in Lafayette, Duarte and her husband now live at amidpoint between her family in Texas and his family in Washington state. She says the fully online program at CU Nursing gave her the abilitytofurther her education and connectwith parts of her life, likeher career and family, more fully.

Duarte would liketocontinue serving immigrant families and is working on becoming fluent in Spanish.

“Spanish is atouchysubjectfor me because the languagegot lostinassimilation with my generation, so I’ve had to work hard to learn it,”she says. “Myparents spoke it as a‘secretlanguage’ between them. Ican create arapportand conductassessments, sometimes Ineed an interpreter.”

She says she likes working with the clinic’s clientele and feels she is healing the communitythatraised her Looking to the future

Though she’s currently focused on nursing, Duarte is intrigued with the idea of combining the full rangeofher educational and career experience.

“I’minterested in seeing how my advocacywork and healthcare work will come together,” she says.

Heradvice to future students in the RN to BSN in Nursing program: “Self-doubt is such atime suck,”she says. “Challengeyour negative mental models and don’t getstuck in them.”

En un video que hizo, Dion -de 54 años- reveló los motivos que la llevaron atomar la dolorosa decisión de poner nasus presentaciones por el momento. “Hola a todos, siento haber tardado tanto en ponerme en contacto con todos ustedes.
