CHAMBER
Welcome
O
On behalf of the Skokie Chamber of Commerce & Industry, its 650-member businesses and our Board of Directors, I am very pleased to introduce the 2017 Skokie Lifestyle Magazine. There is a lot to showcase and be proud of in our community. The Village of Skokie is strong and vibrant. We owe this to many factors including the stability of the business community and the vision of our village management and elected officials. The businesses in Skokie play a vital role in the economic health of our community. The Village of Skokie has a solid industrial, manufacturing and technology presence, along with a retail mix which draws people into the community from throughout the metropolitan area. This strong business presence contributes to the tax base of the village, keeping residential taxes low for our 68,000 residents. The Skokie Chamber of Commerce & Industry has been an active advocate for businesses on the North Shore for over 91 years. We are proud to be contributing to the success and vitality of the Village of Skokie.
We hope that you find value in this publication and that you look toward our member businesses when you are looking for a product or service. Should you have any questions or comments regarding the Skokie Community Guide or any other member benefits or services, please feel free to contact the Chamber office at (847) 673-0240 or email us at
info@skokiechamber.org. For additional copies of this publication or to obtain one of the many guides, resources or information that we offer on Skokie businesses, please stop by our office. We are located in the heart of downtown Skokie at 5002 W. Oakton Street. Skokie is truly a great place to live, work, raise a family and operate a business! Best Regards,

LIVING
In Skokie
S
Skokie has been named one of America’s top 100 places to live by Livability.com, a website that ranks quality of life of America’s small and mid-sized cities. Skokie is among very few Illinois communities to rank on the list. Therefore, it is no wonder that families flock to and enjoy one of the fastest growing suburbs in the United States, according to Money magazine. Add to that the fact that the village recently made significant enhancements to the community, including a $9 million infrastructure investment in downtown Skokie, and you have a winning combination for both kids and adults. Skokie could easily be nicknamed “Tree City.” The greenery parades down many of its streets of colonials, ranches and Chicago-style bungalows. Safe, clean and environmentally friendly neighborhoods dot the landscape. From great neighborhoods to great schools, Skokie is a standout community. There are public, private and parochial educational opportunities. Primary school students are served by six K-8 school districts in Skokie. The majority of Skokie high school students attend Niles North or Niles West. Nationally recognized for academic excellence, both schools have been cited among the countries best by Newsweek and US News & World Report. The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts recognized Niles Township High Schools for having the top arts education program in the US. The Skokie Park District offers a plethora of excitement. In fact, the district is a past winner of the “National Gold
Medal for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.” Its 240 acres of parkland offer countless recreational opportunities for the more than 65,000 residents of Skokie and others throughout the Chicagoland area. Activities include tennis, rowing, indoor skating, a nature center, golf, fitness and two water parks. In addition to its diverse array of programs and special events, the Skokie Park District also offers summer camps, statelicensed full-day childcare and preschool, and before- and afterschool care for grades K-5. The park district offers many seasonal community special events. Families can participate in the award-winning Skokie Festival of Cultures, Skokie’s Backlot Bash music and street festival, Winter Chilly Fest, a July 4th 3-D Fireworks Festival, the Scream Scene haunted house, the World Wiffle Ball Championship and many more activities. The family that reads together stays together and the award winning Skokie Public Library is all about togetherness. However, reading is not its only gig. It also offers performances, workshops, art exhibits, etc. under the roof of its 133,000-square-foot facility. The library’s Bookmobile service is a mobile library that brings books, DVDs and more to locations throughout Skokie five days a week. The second floor Computer Commons and adjacent Computer Classroom offer internet access, scanning stations, Microsoft Office and printing options. There is a separate computer lab for children.

The Skokie Public Library, always community minded, participates in major initiatives including Coming Together in Skokie and Niles Township and the Festival of Cultures. There are many children and family focused businesses in Skokie. For example, the British Swim School of Skokie, located just west of the intersection of East Prairie and Oakton, has open swim events, segregated women’s classes, birthday parties, summer camps, private event rentals and much more. Another great family-oriented business is My Gym’s Children’s Fitness Center, located on Gross Point Road. The company has developed programs and facilities for children 6 weeks through 10 years of age to develop physical, cognitive and emotional skills. Classes incorporate music, dance, relays, games, special rides, gymnastics and sports.
About Community Animal Rescue Effort In 1987, a group of people came together to promote adoptions and care for the dogs and cats at the municipal shelter in Evanston. In 1989, the group incorporated as Community Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.™), an all-volunteer, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. Today, C.A.R.E. has an expanded mission to serve the communities of the North Shore by fostering and supporting healthy, positive relationships between people and companion animals. C.A.R.E. rehomes companion pets into safe, healthy, lifelong homes; serves as an educational and counseling resource; and works to reduce pet overpopulation. C.A.R.E.’s Philosophy C.A.R.E., as a humane organization, believes that every adoptable pet deserves a safe and loving forever home. Our re-homing approach takes into consideration the needs and expectations of the community and adopters we serve as well as the well-being of the animals. Special care is taken to match potential adopters with the right pets. C.A.R.E. continues its commitment by being an available resource after the pet is in its new home. C.A.R.E. is a “limited access, unlimited stay” organization. This means that adoptable animals remain with us until the right home is found.

Nonprofits
S
Skokie is a health-conscious, support-driven community. Many organizations exist to propel that mission. Shore Community Services has provided services to individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities for over 60 years. Services include educational, residential, vocational and related programs. The organization serves nearly 350 individuals each year. For more than 40 years, Skokie-based Orchard Village has empowered persons with developmental challenges to achieve fulfilled lives in the community. They accomplish these goals by collaborating with the community. The result is community-integrated residential, vocational, educational and in-home services. The Douglas Center is a nonprofit organization that provides work programs for individuals with disabilities. They offer employment opportunities that include manufacturing, commercial/industrial sewing, packaging and assembly. Turning Point was established in 1969 as an area mental health center. Comprehensive services include brief or long-
term care, outpatient individual and group therapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication monitoring, case management and a residential living program. Thresholds was established in 1959. The organization offers 30 innovative programs that include employment, advocacy, and housing. It is one of the oldest and largest providers of recovery services for persons with mental illnesses in Illinois. Since 1983, the Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center has been serving the community as a nonprofit center against sexual assault and abuse. In addition to a 24-hour support line, (847) 872-7799, the center offers professional training, school-based programs and community awareness. “We are proud to lend the Chamber’s support to strengthen all these organizations which reach out to the community and make it robust and vibrant,” said Howard Meyer, Executive Director of the Skokie Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “We are proud to do our share to be a welcoming presence and valuable resource to the nonprofits located in the Village of Skokie.”

PLAYGROUND
E
For Adults
Everyone has heard of a playground for kids. However, did you know that Skokie has a playground for adults? That’s right; Skokie is fun, fun, fun! Located just 16 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, Skokie is well known for critically acclaimed restaurants, extensive shopping and international experiences. Another advantage is that it is located near major highways and thoroughfares. Its Yellow Line CTA transit stop boards approximately 1,000 riders a day. If you come to Skokie, come hungry. Dining in Skokie is an experience, not a meal. In fact, some might even call it an international getaway given the continental cuisine offerings. Those include Russian, Mexican, American, Asian and Afghan. Yet, if you are in the mood for something simpler, you will find plenty of coffee shops, pizzerias and family friendly establishments. Fine dining is also available. Skokie Boulevard’s latest facelift brings new shopping and dining options. The long-time former home of Don’s Fishmarket and Comfort Inn was razed to accommodate new plans for the flourishing Skokie Boulevard. Those plans include a Chick-fil-A and several retailers for adults to check out. Visitors will find critically acclaimed restaurants, some of which are among Chicago Magazine’s Best New Restaurants listing. In fact, you can also find a variety of dining at the Westfield Old Orchard Mall. Delicious dining options include McCormick & Schmick’s, Buffalo Wild Wings and Maggiano’s, just to name a few. Of course, the Old Orchard Mall is not only about food. It houses 144 retailers that serve close to 13 million visitors per year. The nearly 2 million-square-foot mall generates

approximately $540 million in annual retail sales. Old Orchard is home to a premier collection of fashion and boutiques. Top brands include Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Tiffany & Co., Zara, Michael Kors, Tesla, Henri Bendel, Vince Camuto, Madewell, Splendid, Anthropologie and Hugo Boss. A revitalization welcomed lush landscaping, ambient lighting and sleek seating enclaves, as well as a brand new interactive play space and organic garden. “The Cube” provides a oneof-a-kind venue for signature events, performances, interactive displays and live entertainment year-round. Other shopping opportunities exist at the Touhy Marketplace. The 16acre site at the northwest corner of St. Louis and Touhy avenues feature four buildings totaling approximately 195,000 square feet of retail space. It includes a 150,000-square-foot Super Wal-Mart. The former Klein Tools plant at the northwest corner of McCormick and Touhy has been replaced by a 73,000 square-foot Mariano’s Fresh Market and other bank and retail facilities. Downtown Skokie is a glorious place to shop, as well. You can find just about anything your heart desires. Up and down Lincoln and Oakton, you will find many opportunities to shop until you drop. Treasures include apparel, furniture and specialty wallpaper. You will also find the everyday when it comes to hardware, office supplies, pharmacy items and gifts. You can also grab some groceries, or take in an art gallery. Looking for yoga? Yep, you will find it there too. The Skokie Chamber of Commerce and Industry in cooperation with the village, continuously strives to bring new businesses to the community. The Storefront Enhancement Program was recently launched by the Village of Skokie. It provides for the commercial corridor properties located outside of the village’s TIF districts. Financial incentives to encourage development, rehabilitation and overall structural improvements within existing buildings are

13

available on a first-come, first-served basis if certain criteria are met. Once businesses take advantage of the program and revitalization takes place, Skokie will offer even more enticing opportunities for nightlife, shopping, cultural, recreational and other intriguing fun prospects for adults These days the counterpart of shopping seems to be movies. Regal Cinemas located at Westfield Old Orchard Mall in Skokie closed in early June to make way for newly upgraded movie theaters. Mall operator Westfield plans to add two luxury CMX theaters, CMX is wholly owned subsidiary of Cinemax. One theater will be ultra-luxurious called “CMX Dine-In,” which will include a food-dining menu and cocktails. The six-screen new theater will have reclining seats. The seven screen second theater will also have recliners and serve cocktails. Renovations seem to be a new theme with theaters. The AMC Village Crossing 18 added a bar to its theater. It offers seating for before and after the movie conversations. Patrons are also allowed to drink while watching movies. The AMC Village Crossing 18 is located at the intersection of Touhy and Carpenter. A different theater experience can be found at the Skokie Theatre. The Skokie Theatre was built in 1912 and was a founding member of the Skokie Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, the building was overhauled and turned into a modern, acoustically perfect concert hall and theatrical venue. It features a variety of eclectic productions, children’s theater and comedy presentations. Skokie prides itself on arts and culture. The North Shore Center for the Performing Arts is home to the award-winning Northlight Theatre and the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra. The North Shore Center for the performing Arts hosts approximately 175,000 patrons annually for hundreds of different events. They include a variety of local, cultural and civic performances, as well as plays, graduations and dance recitals. A visit to Skokie would not be complete without taking in two popular attractions. One, the NorthShore Sculpture Park, offers a magnificent open-air exhibit of more than 70 sculptures. The other attraction is the Skokie Holocaust

Skokie’s close proximity to expressways and thoroughfares is another advantage. Mature-aged residents play an important role in the village. Not only have they played a part in Skokie’s past, but they also remain vital to Skokie’s future. Many are still employed, while others enrich the community through volunteerism. Diversity
Skokie combines all of the ingredients for a well-rounded, diverse, professional and personally satisfying community. The village is one of the most diverse towns in Illinois. The environment in the village is conducive to all aspects of diversity. There are international restaurants, multicultural museums, shops offering items from around the globe and annual events that capture the essence of the village’s myriad of citizens. The latest census information has revealed that the village of Skokie is the most diverse community in the state of Illinois. Over 90 languages and dialects are spoken within the high school district. The top ethnicities by origin include Assyrian, Filipino, Korean and Indo-Asian. Immigrants continue to settle in Skokie due to its diverse housing stock, high degree
of amenities for its residents and welcoming atmosphere. According to the Village of Skokie website, its approximately 65,000 residents have a median age of 42.6 years old and the median house-hold income is $66,655 per year. More than 40 percent of the population was born outside of the United States. Whether you are in a corporate environment, strolling around the town, shopping or getting a bite to eat in Skokie, you are sure to hear people speaking in numerous languages. Close to 100 different languages are spoken. Skokie embraces its people of various ethnic origins by hosting annual events. These affairs aim to build community. One event is Coming Together in Skokie and Niles Township, and the other is the Skokie Festival of Cultures. The Skokie Festival of Cultures, held annually at Oakton Park in Skokie,

has grown over 27 years from 14 cultures with 1,000 attendees, to more than three dozen cultures and 30,000 visitors. Over its more than a quarter-of-a-century, the festival has been honored with both state and national art event programming awards. On May 20-21, 2017, visitors will take their “Tour of the World,” enjoying ethnic folk music and dance on two stages, arts and crafts, international children’s games, food, a beer tasting, a merchandise bazaar, cultural booths, a mini train ride around the park and the festival’s iconic flag display. Kickoff for the event will be on Friday, May 19, at the festival’s International Short Film Festival, from 8 to 9 p.m. The 35 cultures represented at the festival will range from Armenian to Azerbaijani, German to Greek and Tibetan to Thai. Skokie’s Festival of Cultures is an intriguing way to experience the many cultures, languages and traditions that make up the Skokie community. Over the past seven years, the Coming Together in Skokie and Niles Township program has highlighted the area’s diversity by featuring a different culture for an intense six- to eight-week study, starting with the Indian American community in 2010, the Filipino American community in 2011, the Assyrian-American community in 2012, the Greek American community in 2013, and the Korean American community in 2014. In 2015, the Coming Together in Skokie and Niles Township program‘s theme centered around “Voices of Race,” offering a unique opportunity to take a closer look at race in the community neighborhoods. In 2016, organizers examined the Latino and Hispanic cultures. In
2017, the event will celebrate the Chinese culture. Each year, planners choose books for all levels of the population, from primary school through adults, and discuss the literature in various venues throughout the community. Programs provide enriching cultural experiences where participants learn about history, economics, language traditions, and the long journey from country of origin to the Niles Township community. Writer Gene Luen Yang, author of “American Born Chinese,” will visit the community and Niles Township high schools in spring 2017. In addition to “American Born Chinese,” other Coming Together 2017 book selections include “The Shadow Hero,” also by Yang, and “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” and “The Ugly Vegetables” by Grace Lin. More information on Coming Together 2017 is featured on the website: http://comingtogether.in.

America City” finalist distinction from the National Civic League. Therefore, it is no wonder that businesses view Skokie as fertile ground for economic growth. Skokie’s economy is strong and vibrant. The town has a solid industrial, manufacturing, service, retail and technology presence. That robust business presence contributes to the tax base of the village. That is good news when it comes to residential taxes for the village’s near 65,000 residents. Skokie’s location is ideal for accessing supplies and raw materials. This is advantageous in servicing local, regional and national entities. A large, experienced labor pool is readily available. Consistently lower unemployment rate in Skokie than comparative figures at national and regional levels indicate a stable economy. According to Career Trends, the average 2016 unemployment rate in Skokie was approximately 4.5 percent. The total employed was 32,048, and the total unemployed was 1,496. The village is home to over 250 industrial firms. Major employers include Federal-Mogul, Rand McNally, Forsythe Technologies, Tech Lighting, Midland Manufacturing, NAPCO, Block Steel, NorthShore University Health Systems and Castwell Products. Downtown Skokie is a shining example of new birth thanks to the recent completion of an extensive infrastructure improvement. The village invested over $9 million on street paving, new sidewalks, parking, landscaping and street lighting. Downtown Skokie is ever-changing and pedestrian friendly. Residents and visitors can experience A-Z cuisine at many of their fine restaurants. Shopping opportunities are never-ending. Dempster Street’s restaurants, financial institutions, office complexes and specialty shops spawn both revenue and employment for the town. The opening of a 33,000-squarefoot Target in the southwest corner of Dempster Street and Bronx Avenue will produce significant sales and property taxes, and up to 70 new jobs. Other retail opportunities on Dempster Street include Walgreens, CVS and the new Dollar Store. Food choices are numerous and include Grecian Kitchen, HUBS, Dunkin’ Donuts, Panda Express, and the new Pita Inn, just to name a few. Skokie is ranked No. 1 in total retail sales growth among the top 20 Chicagoland suburbs (2014-2015). Part of the reason is thanks to the Westfield Orchard Mall. The Mall garnered Skokie the No. 4 spot in the Top 23 core mall markets. The village’s 2015 Citizen’s Survey conducted by the National Research Center, Boulder, Colorado, showed that residents ranked Skokie above national benchmarks for land use, code enforcement, planning/zoning decisionmaking, mobility and employment opportunities. There are many top employers in the area that make Skokie the perfect place to work, play and reside. one of the areas top employment destinations is the Illinois Science + Technology Park, which exceeds the 1,500 employee mark. Over 85% of the campus is leased, with many of the tenants expanding their operations. Health care opportunities include Integrity, ReMED and 3 Angels. Retailers such as Crabtree & Evelyn, Soma Intimate, Build-A-Bear Workshop and Bob’s Discount Furniture generate additional employment in the area. Construction activity in the village is high. The next highest percentage was found in institutional buildings at $23 million. Thanks to the Skokie Economic Development Commission and the village staff ’s Targeted Economic Development Strategy, Skokie continues to be positioned for 21st century growth. When it comes to “getting down to business,” the Skokie Chamber of Commerce and Industry leads the way. The organization attracts new business through proven techniques including collaborating with the Village and with area agencies to provide expanded benefits and services, as well as education resources providing seminars on practical and relevant topics. The Chamber offers networking connections to develop business relationships through opportunities for face-to-face meetings. It acts as a liaison to village officials for concerns
