WHEELING VILLAGE PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

O

On behalf of the village board, I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for your support of the Wheeling/Prospect Heights Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Chamber exists to promote opportunities for its members, to encourage local business growth, to lobby governing bodies on behalf of business interests and to provide a forum for building meaningful relationships. Your support of this organization enhances the vitality of our local economy and benefits our residents with a vibrant job market, exciting shopping and dining options and overall economic growth. In the heart of the northwest suburbs of Chicago, with a diverse population of 40,000 people, Wheeling is perhaps best known for our popular Restaurant Row and flourishing business community. Home to over 850 licensed businesses from more than 50 business sectors, and with approximately 13.5 million square feet of industrial space under roof, Wheeling is the center of commerce and industry in the northwest suburbs. Our economic climate is enhanced by every business that opens its doors in town, and we are grateful to those who have chosen to locate here. Wheeling’s diverse economic base delivered stable growth over the past year. Sales were up across most categories, while demand continued to be strong in the industrial sector, sustaining our low vacancy rates. In addition, several major projects have spurred interest in development opportunities in town, particularly along the Dundee and Milwaukee corridors. The village issued permits for nearly $70 million worth of construction projects in 2015, a $29 million increase over 2014. The village works hard to support continued growth and development. Toward this end, Wheeling has five tax increment financing (TIF) districts. The Town Center-II TIF was established to facilitate the ongoing transformation of the Dundee Road corridor and surrounding area; while another recently established district, the Southeast-II TIF, was created to encourage industrial, retail, restaurant and hotel development around the airport. The five TIF districts cover the village’s primary commercial areas along Milwaukee Avenue, Lake-Cook Road and Dundee Road.

We have an exciting and productive year ahead, with several major projects that will have a tremendous impact on the future of this community. We are working toward the start of construction at Wheeling Town Center, completion of the Northgate Crossing apartment complex, the second annual July 3 Rock ’n’ Run the Runway community celebration at Chicago Executive Airport and another successful Taste of the Town event. Additionally, the village continues to work with state and local partners to achieve service objectives. The village maintains a significant leadership role with several regional agencies, such as the Northwest Municipal Conference, the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission and Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. We are also committed to continuing our collaboration with the Chamber to support business promotion and attraction efforts. The village’s Department of Economic Development recruits new businesses and industries, facilitates commercial development and helps existing businesses manage their future growth and space needs. The village continues to promote growth and development in Wheeling in accordance with our comprehensive plan. While Wheeling is an established suburb of Chicago, a considerable amount of property remains available for infill commercial and industrial development, including two village-owned lots on Milwaukee Avenue. For information on location or development opportunities, please contact the Department of Economic Development at (847) 459-2605 or ed@wheelingil.gov. We wish your business many successful years in Wheeling. Working together, our community’s overall prosperity will grow stronger than ever. Sincerely,

Dean S. Argiris Village President

PROSPECT HEIGHTS MAYOR’S WELCOME

W

Welcome to the 2016 Community Guide & Business Directory! Prospect Heights continues to evolve and grow, with exciting economic and retail developments in the works. Currently, Prospect Heights has more than $100 million in development currently under construction. The city scored some big wins starting in late 2015 in terms of economic retail developments. Here are just a few that represent $100 million in investments. Ruffolo Fresh Market recently opened near the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Palatine Road in a 17,000-square-foot space that caters to the more than 2,000 area residents. In order to encourage Ruffolo’s investment in Prospect Heights and help the store get off the ground, the Prospect Heights city council approved a sales tax rebate program to help him get started. He brings 22 new jobs to the community. At the other end of town, in an 87,000-square-foot space at 1241 N. Rand Rd., Tony’s Finer Foods has opened its 13th store in our city, adding 200 jobs. Two other sales-tax generators are the recently completed Player’s Pub and Grill at 1250 S. River Rd. and the soon-to-be-completed renovation at the Ramada Inn Plaza at the midway point of the Chicago Executive Airport on Milwaukee Avenue. Player’s Pub is an off-trackbetting facility owned by Hawthorne Race Course. Other ongoing projects in Prospect Heights include the construction of

a 700-unit, $20 million Uncle Bob’s indoor storage facility on Rand Road. Also, Chase Bank will relocate to our city from Randhurst, building a new home and hiring more employees. In March, Greenbrier Senior Living started construction on Greenbrier of Prospect Heights. This $30 million project is a 101-unit assisted living and memory care community that will be located near the intersection of Elmhurst and Palatine Roads. It will include a three-story, 69-unit assisted living facility, as well as a one-story, 32 unit building for memory care patients. As 2016 progresses, city aldermen will continue to call on existing businesses in their wards to act as trouble-shooters and ombudsmen when needed in order to keep businesses happy in Prospect Heights. In addition, city staff will continue to seek opportunities to sell or develop the open 12-acre industrially-zoned parcel between Piper Lane and Palatine Road, across from the Chicago Executive Airport. During the next 12 months we will continue our focus; progress with new development and the beautification of our city will be our most important products.

WHEELING PARK DISTRICT & BUSINESS

T

The board and staff of the Wheeling Park District take pride in serving area businesses as conscientiously as they serve residents because they feel that as district taxpayers, businesses and industries and their employees deserve to use the facilities and enjoy the services they help to fund. Chevy Chase Country Club, 1000 N. Milwaukee Ave., is the park district facility that is probably most popular with area businesses because of its banquet and meeting facilities, as well as its challenging 18-hole golf course. Over the past several years, the park district has invested over $5 million in improvements to the 100-year-old clubhouse and course. The Grand Ballroom, which holds up to 600 people, has recently received a major update with a refinished wood floor, new carpeting, restrooms and lighting, according to Jan Buchs, executive director of the Wheeling Park District. “The Historic Grand Ballroom maintained its traditional character and continues to host many corporate events, weddings and other social events there,” she said. The Devonshire Room has been enlarged to hold up to 250 people and enhanced with upgraded audio-visual capabilities and large screens, so it is particularly geared for business meetings and luncheons. The Gable Room bar has also been updated and renovated recently, while the golf course itself was renovated in 2002. “We actively market these facilities to our sponsors and corporate partners, as well as to all businesses in the region,” Buchs said, “plus we now have the redeveloped Heritage Park to offer companies as a venue for employee recognition events, alternative meeting locations and client thank you events.” Located at 333 W. Dundee Road, Heritage Park offers something for everyone. For instance, the Heritage Park campus is home to the Wheeling Park District’s Fitness Center with 4,100 square feet of free weights and cardio equipment, its

indoor track and pool. Working in Wheeling qualifies employees for a corporate rate at the fitness center, as long as proof of active employment is provided. In addition, some local firms have field softball teams that compete in the District’s 12-inch softball league at Heritage Park sports complex. The Performance Pavilion and natural amphitheater on the southwest side of the 10acre Lake Heritage, is also home to arts, culture and music, including the park district’s free summer entertainment series that those employed in Wheeling can also enjoy. A large, rustic picnic shelter can be rented for special occasions like family reunions and company picnics. Made possible by an intergovernmental agreement between the Wheeling Park District, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and the Village of Wheeling, Heritage Park provides long-lasting benefits to Wheeling and flood management to other communities along the Des Plaines River. Flooding of Heritage Park sports fields and the resulting cancellation of sporting events and tournaments are also a thing of the past, thanks to these flood management measures. The many tournaments annually scheduled on these fields regularly bring thousands of adults and children from other communities to Wheeling where they not only compete athletically, but also patronize local businesses, including restaurants, retail establishments and sometimes, hotels, Buchs said. In fact, she added, the park district actively works to promote local businesses to program participants and visitors through its sponsorship program. Many local restaurants, in particular, enjoy the opportunity to sponsor events and facilities at Heritage Park in order to promote themselves to both the “home” and “away” teams and their families and fans.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

A

Attracting new businesses and supporting the success of current businesses is vital to every community because business and industry not only provides jobs to area residents, but also pays the taxes that subsidize the roads, schools, parks, libraries, and other public resources that every community relies on. The leaders of both the Village of Wheeling and the City of Prospect Heights are diligent in their pursuit of businesses that can improve the quality of life in their communities.

WHEELING Good things come to those who wait, as the saying goes. Wheeling expects to break ground on its new downtown, Wheeling Town Center, in September. Located on the nearly 10-acre former Wickes Furniture property next to the Wheeling Metra station at Dundee Road and Northgate Parkway, Wheeling Town Center will be a $100 million transit-oriented master-planned mixed-use development featuring 100,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and service space, as well as a village greenway and nearly 300 mid-rise apartments with an internal parking deck. The complex is directly adjacent to the 85-acre Heritage Park, the municipal campus and the train station. Thanks to the strong seasonal audience at neighboring Heritage Park, where families gather for events, festivals and baseball and soccer games, the site is expected to attract a wide variety of restaurants, retailers and entertainment venues to the new center, according to John Melaniphy, director of economic development for the Village of Wheeling. However, “A development of this size and scope is fraught with challenges, he noted. “The village worked with all the various stakeholders on infrastructure improvements, utility easements, pipeline relocation, traffic signalization, storm water management, cross access agreements, landscaping and parking.” Now they are able to move forward. In the meantime, another aspect of Wheeling’s Downtown Master Plan got underway. The construction of Reva Development’s Northgate Crossings, the 288-unit master planned apartment development on the north side of Dundee Road (offering beautiful apartment units with garages and a full complement of amenities), is proceeding. Northgate Crossings, which offers a community clubhouse, swimming pool, exercise room, walking trails and other amenities, has experienced strong leasing thanks to its proximity to the Wheeling Metra Station, the planned Wheeling Town Center, local employers, Heritage Park and Wheeling’s famous Restaurant Row. The Wheeling Town Center development will add another 300 luxury apartment units directly adjacent to the station. Melaniphy expects the Wheeling Town Center to be a catalyst for additional development and redevelopment along the Dundee Road commercial corridor. “We continue to market the former Kmart property at Dundee and Elmhurst Road,” he said. “Based on an examination of our retail sales by category, we are actively seeking a mixed-use development, big-box home

26

WPH – Chamber of Commerce & Industry

improvement store or general merchandise store for that location.” In 2015 the Village of Wheeling issued building permits for $70 million worth of construction projects, a whopping $29 million increase over 2014. It also invested $4.8 million in capital improvements to Wheeling’s infrastructure, including nearly $1 million in TIF-related improvements. For instance, the village recently installed all new streetlights on Dundee Road, which is a dramatic improvement. The village plans an additional $7.6 million in infrastructure improvements in 2016, Melaniphy noted. New retail businesses that came to Wheeling during 2015 include Stella’s Café, The Purple Sprout Café, ATI Physical Therapy, Marvy Nails & Spa, Fabulous Hair Salon and Dunkin Donuts. There is also a new senior living facility, The Whitley, under construction, as well as a living facility called Philhaven for those with mental health disabilities. “We have accelerated our marketing efforts to recruit new restaurants to the former Le Francais restaurant site and the village-owned parcel just north of Tuscany,” Melaniphy said. The village’s experiment with becoming a member of Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CNSCVB) has definitely borne fruit, Melaniphy said. Occupancy at the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel and Convention Center reached an all-time high in 2015, in part due to the convention bureau’s efforts to promote convention, corporate meeting and trade show bookings in Wheeling. Melaniphy said that the village has also witnessed enhanced marketing efforts of the village’s restaurants, entertainment venues and recreational amenities since the CNSCVB’s full-time staff has been marketing Wheeling facilities to meeting planners. For instance, restaurant sales increased from $90 million in 2014 to over $96 million in 2015 and village leaders credit their significant investment in CNSCVB membership for much of that improvement. Wheeling is also actively seeking additional industrial and warehouse development to help bolster manufacturing opportunities and create jobs. Village staff, for instance, recently sought the assistance of U.S. Rep. Bob Dold, Gov. Bruce Rauner and others to recruit Richelieu Foods to Wheeling. In the end, the concerted effort of Dold, Rauner, Department

2016 Community Guide & Business Directory

of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Director Jim Schultz, Village President Dean Argiris and Phaedra Leslie at the Cook County Workforce Partnership assisted in Wheeling beating out several sites in other states. Richelieu Foods has leased the 115,000-square-foot former Orvil-Kent food processing facility at 120 W. Palatine Rd. and plans to commence operations in July and add approximately 125 new jobs. Richelieu Foods produces private-label frozen pizzas, salad dressing, sauces, marinades, condiments and deli salads for many retailers. Wheeling also continues to focus resources on recruiting foreign investment and foreign trade. Last October, village officials traveled to the Republic of Korea with a delegation of local business and education leaders, including Congressman Bob Dold. The purpose of the visit, sponsored by Wheeling’s own Korean Cultural Center of Chicago, was

to promote exchanges in the areas of business, industry, trade, tourism, education, art and culture. “Our objective is to work closely with the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the Korean Cultural Center, the Japanese Consulate and our many community partners to establish mutually beneficial international exchanges,” Melaniphy said. “Wheeling must compete in the global marketplace and all of these relationships provide exciting opportunities for our manufacturers and businesses.” “Manufacturing is the only wealth-creating class of business,” Dru Garcia, Wheeling’s Business Development Coordinator, added. “Every job a manufacturer creates results in an additional three to four support jobs. So this is an especially desirable business class for our community to support in achieving and sustaining true economic growth.”

Based on business licensing activity, new industrial openings and expansions in 2015 totaled more than 227,000 square feet, with over 280 new jobs added in the industrial sector alone. Among the new industrial companies the village assisted during 2015 were Master Brew, Swiss Precision, Vinston US Corp. and Windy City Linens. In addition, the village is currently working with a developer on a 134,500-square-foot spec industrial building planned at 800 Northgate Parkway. This would be the first speculative industrial building built in Wheeling in nearly two decades, Melaniphy notied, epitomizing the strength of Wheeling’s industrial market. “Wheeling has 13.5 million square feet of industrial space and the fifth largest manufacturing employment in the state behind Chicago, Elk Grove Village, Rockford and Elgin,” he said. In addition, its industrial vacancy rate is only six percent, compared to an average eight percent vacancy rate throughout the metropolitan area. “Manufacturers are attracted to Wheeling because of our proximity to I-294, rail lines, and both Chicago Executive and O’Hare International Airports,” Melaniphy said. “They appreciate our transportation infrastructure and the fact that we have a significant concentration of newer industrial buildings of various sizes in modern industrial parks. The properties most in demand generally feature modern loading docks and the high ceilings that today’s manufacturers require.” The fact that Wheeling offers varied housing stock nearby, with diverse price points and an easy commute via the Metra station is another factor, Melaniphy added.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS Prospect Heights cannot, by law, levy property taxes because it is not a home-rule community. Therefore, its leaders need to carefully choose businesses to come to town that will generate sales taxes to fund its improvements and city services. Hence, the businesses actively recruited to Prospect Heights are overwhelmingly retail, when possible. On parcels that do not, for one reason or another, lend themselves to retail, industry or other entities which will otherwise serve residents, through job creation or needed services, are sought. Mayor Nick Helmer and the city’s staff have scored some big wins during the past year in terms of economic development. Ruffolo Fresh Market recently opened near the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Palatine Road in a 17,000-square-foot space that had formerly housed Save-A-Lot. This is a second location for owner Louie Ruffolo, the former vice president of operations for Caputo & Sons grocery stores, who took over and renamed the Farmer’s Pride Fresh Market on Algonquin Road in Arlington Heights during 2015. In order to encourage Ruffolo’s investment in Prospect Heights and help the store get off the ground, the Prospect Heights City Council approved a sales tax rebate program last fall. In the first year, the city will rebate 50 percent of the sales tax it receives from Ruffolo Fresh Market

28

back to the business. Over the next few years that will decrease to 40 percent, 30 percent, 20 percent and 10 percent by the fifth year. “At the end of five years he should be well-established. It will be a big help to him and we’re happy to be able to do it,” Helmer told the Daily Herald last December. “We thought this would be a nice way to get a smaller merchant started. Not only because of the need, but who wants vacant storefronts?” At the other end of town, in an 87,000-square-foot space at 1241 N. Rand Rd., Tony’s Finer Foods has opened its 13th store in the Chicago area, bringing with it 200 jobs, Helmer said. It replaced Ultra Foods which closed March 1. It, too, has worked out a sales tax sharing agreement with the city that will extend over 12 years. Two other sales tax generators are the recently completed Player’s Pub and Grill at 1250 S. River Rd. and the soon-to-be-completed renovation at the Ramada Inn Plaza at the midway point of the Chicago Executive Airport on Milwaukee Avenue. Player’s Pub is an off-trackbetting facility owned by the Hawthorne Race Course in Stickney. In fact, Hawthorne President Tim Carey visited Prospect Heights for the recent ribbon-cutting. Other ongoing projects in Prospect Heights include the construction of a 700-unit $24 million Uncle Bob’s indoor storage facility on Rand Road, next to the Roto car dealership. The Chase Bank branch at Randhurst will relocate in 2017 to the former Social Security office location across Euclid Avenue in Prospect Heights. Big news was also made in March when Greenbrier Senior Living announced that it has started construction on Greenbrier of Prospect Heights. This $30 million project is a 101-unit assisted living and memory care community to be constructed on five acres of land near the intersection of Elmhurst and Palatine Roads. It will include a three-story, 69-unit assisted living facility, as well as a one-story, 32-unit building for residents requiring memory care. “We’ve created this community to match the lifestyle and needs of the growing senior population, not only in Prospect Heights, but also in surrounding suburbs like Wheeling, Mount Prospect, Northbrook and Arlington Heights, allowing residents to stay close to family and friends who live in the immediate area,” said Patrick Dimaano, Development Director for Pathway Senior Living, which will manage Greenbrier of Prospect Heights. As 2016 progresses, Helmer said city aldermen will continue to call on existing businesses in their wards to act as trouble-shooters and ombudsmen where needed in order to keep those businesses happy in Prospect Heights. In addition, city staff will continue to seek opportunities to sell or develop the open 10-acre industrially-zoned parcel between Piper Lane and Palatine Road, across from the Chicago Executive Airport. They also plan to continue the beautification program along Milwaukee Avenue and will install more “Welcome to Prospect Heights” signs, bringing that total to 20 around the city. “During the next 12 months, progress with new development and the beautification of our city will be our most important product,” Helmer said.

INDIAN TRAILS LIBRARY RENOVATION

T

The Indian Trails Public Library is currently in the midst of a $14.4 million dollar renovation at its 355 Schoenbeck building in Wheeling and is operating out of temporary quarters at 70 W. Dundee Rd., Buffalo Grove, at the intersection of Buffalo Grove and Dundee Roads. The renovation is expected to be completed during the spring of 2017 when the library will reopen in Wheeling, said Susan Dennison, communications manager for the library. “We are doing a complete interior renovation of the existing library and constructing a 15,000-square-foot addition to the facility. We are also updating the building’s mechanicals and adding an energy-efficient geothermal heating and cooling system,” Dennison said. The current library was built in 1981. It was expanded and renovated

in two phases between 1995 and 1998. Now it is expanding again and getting a whole new look. “Everything we are adding are things our members have requested like eight private study rooms, a public-access conference room, a dedicated space for children’s programming, a larger space for adult programming, a training lab and a “makerspace” where do-it-yourselfers can sew, use 3D printers and laser cutters and so forth,” she said. An additional 46 more parking spaces and a drive-up window for the drop-off and pick-up of library materials will also be added. “This is going to be fantastic when it is done,” Dennison said. “We have been preparing for this renovation since 2010 and now that it is actually happening, the entire staff is beyond excited.”

BUSINESS PROFILES

W

Wheeling and Prospect Heights and their Chamber of Commerce are fortunate to boast a diverse economic base, consisting of businesses, large and small, new and well-established. Some primarily serve local residents, others serve the larger Chicago community and still others provide services or ship product to the entire country or even the world.

BERTOG LANDSCAPE Tracy Bertog, CEO and founder of Bertog Landscape in Wheeling, developed a love for landscaping as a teenager. He started cutting lawns in Glenview at the age of 12 and as soon as he could, progressed to working in a local garden center and landscape company. He actually started Bertog Landscape when he was only a junior in high school and purchased a dump truck for the business four days before his 16th birthday. In fact, the receipt from Tom Todd for that truck still hangs in his office. “My dad was a professor at Oakton College and he was a strong believer

in a college education. So he insisted that I at least go through Triton College’s two-year horticulture program. When I finished, he saw my passion for what I was doing and how my landscape business was taking off and he was satisfied,” Bertog recalled. Bertog Landscape has grown steadily over the years, moving to Wheeling 10 years ago. Today it employs 30 people full-time (including four landscape architects/designers) and 70 seasonal workers (from March to Thanksgiving). His brothers, Bob and Steve, also work in the business. Bob serves as president and Steve runs the irrigation and lighting division. Although Bertog handles some commercial jobs, the firm focuses on high-end residential landscape designs along the North Shore, the Barrington area, Lake Geneva and as far south as Hinsdale. “We design and build outdoor kitchens, patios and raised terraces,” he said. “I would estimate that 60 percent of our work involves the installation of plant materials while the other 40 percent of the time we are working with hardscapes, irrigation systems and lighting. We work almost 100 percent on referrals.” After installation, Bertog also handles weekly maintenance because they like to monitor the progress of their trees and plants. They have 15 three-man crews that maintain both residences and commercial properties. “I love seeing a new home with no landscaping and then watching as we transform it with landscaping, hardscape and lighting. Watching the progress of jobs is still exciting,” he said.

PRIESTER AVIATION Charles Priester is the chairman of Priester Aviation, a private aviation company based at Chicago Executive Airport that specializes in global charter and aircraft management. The Priester name has been synonymous with air travel in the northwest suburbs since Charles’ father, George, purchased the field in 1953. At the time, the runways were made of cinders and the longest one was 2,800 feet long. Over the next 33 years, the family firm expanded the size of the airport; paved runways; added lights; and constructed 10 corporate hangars. An instrument approach was established, and the 5,000-foot paved runway constructed in 1961. By 1965 several corporate hangars had been built and in 1967 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) commissioned an air traffic control tower at the airport. Improvements continued through the 1970s and early 1980s until Palwaukee Airport, as it was called then, was named the busiest privately-owned airfield in the world in 1983. Shortly thereafter, the Priesters began the process of negotiating the sale of the airport to the neighboring communities of Wheeling and Prospect Heights so they could focus on aircraft management and jet charter. “We are aviation people. We wanted Palwaukee to remain an airport because it was in a great location and since we knew that it couldn’t remain an airport if it was privately-owned, we sold it,” he recalled. Ownership formally changed in late 1986 and around the same time the Priesters also sold their Fixed Base Operations (FBO) business that provided necessary services to the aviation community. Charles Priester ran the operation for the owners and after one year was invited to join the ownership group. In 2001, the remaining partners sold the FBO to Signature Flight Support

to focus on growing the aircraft management and global charter business. Charles and his son, Andy, the firm’s current president and CEO, have built Priester Aviation into a force to be reckoned with in the private aviation field. They now employ nearly 300 people and have a fleet of 60 advanced business jets strategically positioned around the world, about a dozen of which are based at Chicago Executive Airport. They currently are experiencing exceptional growth in satellite locations including Texas and New York City, Charles said. In addition, Priester offers a comprehensive aircraft management service for those individuals and corporations that own their own aircraft. They provide administration, trip coordination, crew scheduling, flight operations, crew training, regulatory oversight, risk management and maintenance coordination.

with dancing hot dogs on the roof, at 6363 N. Milwaukee Ave. Over the years their son, Scott, daughter, Lisa, and sonin-law, Don Drucker, also became involved and they all work together running both locations. Scott’s daughter, Laura, grew up in the business, too, first working as a carhop at the age of 15. After college, she went to work for a large restaurant chain in Washington, D.C., while she decided whether the restaurant business was what she wanted. By 2008 she had made her decision and returned to Chicago to find her place in the Superdawg business. That was also when plans for a second, much larger, restaurant materialized, and the expectation was that Laura would run it. There was never any question where the new restaurant would be built. Back in 1982, Maurie had bought that Wheeling parcel between the Des Plaines River and Milwaukee Avenue, anticipating that it would be a great place for a restaurant. For many years they used the existing building on the site as a warehouse, Laura recalled. “Our family may move slowly,” she quipped, “but we finally pulled the trigger and opened the new place in January 2010. It is three times larger than the original one with taller dancing hot dogs on the roof, but it is also a drive-in that has a picnic area and it offers the same delicious food and friendly family atmosphere.” Superdawg hot dogs are specially made for them of 100 percent beef. They are smokier, larger and more flavorful than any competitor’s hot dog, Laura said, and they come with a unique grouping of Chicago-style toppings: mustard, onion, relish, pickle, tangy and slightly hot sport peppers and pickled green tomatoes. Laura admitted that getting customers and long-time staff members (who knew her as a teenager) to recognize her as the boss and a successful businessperson was a bit of a hurdle, but she has succeeded and her staff of 25 works well with her now in a team atmosphere. Five members of the Berman family are currently involved in the Superdawg business and family dinners often transform themselves into business meetings, but Laura said she enjoys working in the family business because everyone is totally invested in the restaurant and really cares. “We aren’t just a bunch of random strangers working in a restaurant together,” she said.

RESTAURANT ROW HISTORY

A

Ask anyone in the Greater Chicago area, particularly on the North Shore or in the northwest suburbs, and they will immediately associate Wheeling with great restaurants, and the village’s famed Restaurant Row, in particular. Hot spots like Bob Chinn’s Crabhouse, Tuscany, Superdawg, Benihana, Pete Miller’s and Cooper’s Hawk continue to attract enthusiastic diners, just as their predecessors have fed and entertained area residents and travelers for well over a century. “The finest dining in the northern suburbs is found on Wheeling’s Restaurant Row along the west banks of the Des Plaines River. This stretch of Milwaukee Avenue is home to some of the best-known restaurants in the Chicago area and is the dining destination for connoisseurs to sample cuisine delights from around the world,” Wheeling proclaims in its dining guide. The first tavern in Wheeling was built by Joseph Filkins in 1837, according to “Wheeling Through the Years,” edited by Barbara McIntyre and Robert McIntyre in 1987. “Milwaukee Avenue had become a stage route and post road and it was to provide travelers with food, drink and lodging that Filkins’ Stage Coach Tavern was built on the northwest corner of what is now Milwaukee Avenue and Dundee Road,” they wrote. “When Filkins rang the dinner bell, his customers rushed from the washing trough to the table to eat all they could hold for 25 cents. Whiskey was five cents extra.” The Filkins Tavern stood where Walgreen’s stands today. Many other taverns and hotels followed because those traveling from Chicago to Milwaukee by coach or wagon could reach Wheeling by lunch time, so places sprung up that could feed hungry travelers, according to Patti Steilen, curator of the Wheeling Historical Society. Filkins’ was followed by places like Chicago House, Wheeling House, Behm’s Riverside Inn, the Union Hotel, Moellers’ Restaurant and many more. In the early years, restaurants were Wheeling’s “industry,” providing employment for many of the residents. Lorraine Haben was quoted in “Through the Years” as saying, “there wasn’t much work for us young people. You were a waitress or you went somewhere else.” “In the 1920s when the automobile really became popular, Wheeling boomed

www.wphchamber.com

IL-WHP-CW-16 Design.indd 35

and was one of the best-known chicken and steak dinner centers in the Chicago area,” Marshall Balling, grandson of the owner of the Chicago House, said in “Through The Years.” That was also the time when The Mob found Wheeling. They frequented places like The Derby speakeasy, the Bon Air Country Club (now Chevy Chase) and both Kay’s Tavern and Villa Venice, which were nearby in Northbrook (where River Road and Milwaukee Avenue meet). Prohibition was the law then and bootleggers (as well as bookies) flocked to Wheeling area roadhouses from 1920 until the law was repealed in 1933. The end of Prohibition led to another boom in the Wheeling restaurant business. For instance, Fred and Frances Moeller opened Moeller’s restaurant in an old house in 1935 and Otto Orlowski opened Polish Village in 1937. Behm’s Riverside Inn was also very popular at this time. For instance, famed vaudeville, movie, stage and television star Don Ameche, who lived in Deerfield, was a regular. Later, during World War II, fantastic fish fry dinners were reportedly held at the Union Hotel. People would wait in line for hours on Friday nights. Sounds like an old-time, much stripped-down version of the modern Bob Chinn’s! In recent times, these pioneering restaurants have been replaced with some establishments that have come and gone, and others that remain and thrive. Behm’s was eventually replaced by Hackney’s Restaurant which has more recently been replaced by D’Agostino’s Pizza. Don Roth’s Blackhawk came to Wheeling in 1969 and was a huge draw for 40 years until the family chose to close it in 2009. Moeller’s was replaced by La Francaise, which closed in 2007 and is currently waiting for a new tenant. Bob Chinn’s Crabhouse opened in late 1982 and is currently the fifth grossing independent restaurant in the country. Superdawg opened a huge hot dog drive-in along Restaurant Row in 2010 and others also continue to flock there to take advantage of the area’s huge following. There are currently 23 full-service restaurants currently located along Milwaukee Avenue between Hintz and Lake-Cook Roads, the official boundaries of Restaurant Row, according to John Melaniphy, Wheeling’s Director of Economic Development. They collectively brought in $96 million in revenue during 2015, a 6.25 percent increase over 2014.
