HISTORY
T
The first inhabitants of the area now known as Wood Dale were Winnebago Indians, a part of the Sioux tribe, using the lands as prime hunting grounds. Hezekiah Dunklee was the first to stake a claim in 1833 along the banks of Salt Creek, in a spot later called Dunklee’s Grove. Settlers Edward Lester and his family arrived from New York in 1835, followed by a large influx of German immigrants who arrived prior to the Civil War, claiming most remaining land for farms, building homes, churches and stores. According to historical records, the deep prairie loam, which made the area a farmer’s dream, was a road builder’s nightmare. Road maintenance efforts, such as smoothing rutted roads with a huge log and laying logs across the road, were tried but failed. “What the area needed was a railroad,” said Judith Ryan of the Wood Dale Historical Society. Following the Civil War, Frederick Lester, the youngest Lester family son, led a group lobbying the Chicago and Pacific Railroad to construct tracks through the area. In 1873 the rail line from Chicago to Elgin opened and the first industry in the area, a cheese factory, opened next to the rail station. The area soon became known as Lester Station, and in 1890 the train station relocated to its present site at Wood Dale and Irving Park Road. In 1899 the name changed to Wooddale as a subdivision was proposed south of the tracks. In 1928 the village incorporated, creating the Village of Wood Dale and by 1970 it became a city.
Feel the Difference at the Holiday Inn Itasca,

Wood Dale grew slowly until the 1960s when the population exploded from 3,000 to more than 11,000 by 1980. Today Wood Dale is home to 13,770 residents. By day, the population swells to 35,000 as workers flock to Wood Dale business and industrial employers. The Wood Dale community is surrounded by an extensive expressway system making travel throughout the suburban and metropolitan area quick and easy. The community is centrally located with Illinois Route 53 to the west, Route 83 and connections to I-290 to the east, and northsouth travel via I-294 with easy access to I-88, I-90 and I-355. With the anticipated 2017 completion of the Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project, Wood Dale is perfectly poised to offer even more convenient access to key Chicago and suburban commuter and visitor destinations – all hallmarks of life in this diverse community.

BUSINESS / ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
S
Small-town charm and big plans for the future. That’s the philosophy behind plans for the City of Wood Dale as residents and business owners alike embrace a prime location perfectly poised for explosive 21 century economic growth. Historically, Wood Dale’s location has always been a key to growth. From its earliest 1833 Dunklee’s Grove settlement along wagon trail routes, to the arrival of the Chicago and Pacific Railroad, and eventual incorporation first as a village and then a city, Wood Dale history is tracked by transportation and proximity. Today, located at the center of the nation’s busiest transportation hub, the bustling west suburban community is strategically situated on the western edge of O’Hare International Airport, just 23 miles west of downtown Chicago. The City of Wood Dale offers direct access to a number of major interstates, nearby O’Hare International Airport and Metra Rail service with direct connection to both Chicago and Elgin. Located in the heart of the O’Hare corridor, Wood Dale is within 10 minutes of four interstate highways and boasts low DuPage County property taxes and a highly educated workforce. The close-knit Wood Dale community has a population of 13,770 and offers residents and those working in the community unsurpassed access to transportation by land, rail or air. Wood Dale is conveniently located, just minutes away from an array of regional attractions, shopping, entertainment, and cultural attractions. With a nod to the past and big plans for the future, transportation routes continue to play a vital role in economic development.
Gateway to the future with Western O’Hare Access
The Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project (EOWA), currently under construction and nearing completion through Wood Dale’s industrial district, allows western access to the nation’s second busiest airport and the region to meet future transportation needs, creating an anticipated 65,000 new jobs by 2040. The major roadway construction project, which began in 2013, is expected to enhance economic development and travel performance in the area, providing access from the west side of O’Hare International Airport via York Road and accommodate nearly three times as many vehicles per day as local roads now carry. The EOWA project began with an addition of nearly 50 expressway lane miles through the conversion
of Thorndale Avenue into a limited-access four-lane highway, creating an extension to the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway. With this extension, a bypass or ring road will be created in order to connect I-90 and I-294. Due to the overall magnitude of the project and potential to dramatically improve mobility, freight connectivity and enhance the national and regional economies, the EOWA project is considered a Project of National and Regional Significance by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Highlights include a new all-electronic toll road around the western border of O’Hare International Airport, linking the Jane Adams Memorial Tollway (I-90) and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), the extension of the Elgin O’Hare Expressway, now known as Illinois Route 390, east along Thorndale Avenue to O’Hare International Airport and the rehabilitation and widening of existing Illinois Route 390.
Wood Dale road construction highlights
Of special interest to Wood Dale commuters and residents is a new interchange at Illinois Route 390 and Wood Dale Road, including a Wood Dale Road overpass bridge, currently under construction, and the new frontage road system. The Wood Dale Road bridge is expected to be complete in the fall of 2016. As construction nears completion, the City of Wood Dale is installing decorative pedestrian scale lighting along Wood Dale Road, similar to the ornamental lighting near city hall. The City of Wood Dale is funding construction of numerous sidewalk and bike path improvements to be constructed along with the EOWA project. When complete, pedestrians and bikers will be able to traverse along a variety of new bike paths connecting to the Salt Creek Greenway Trail, and other paths leading throughout the western suburbs and beyond.
Still to come
As construction comes to a close, the Wood Dale Road and Irving Park intersection also will be enhanced with wider sidewalks and plantings designed to create a more pedestrian-friendly and safer intersection. The city council hopes a yet-to-be-determined feature at the intersection will one day help provide a sense of community identity and serve to welcome visitors to the city.
The big picture traffic view
The new tollway, Illinois Route 390, is complete from I-290 west to U.S. Route 20 and fully open to traffic; toll collection began July 5. Work continues to the east of Wood Dale on the new tollway that will be complete from I-290 east to Illinois Route 83 by the end of the 2017 construction season. Eventually, a north-south bypass or ring road connecting I-90 and I-294 is targeted for 2018 completion.
Wood Dale business at a glance
The city currently is experiencing economic growth, both in its industrial district, as well as its downtown area. With a growing daytime population, Wood Dale boasts a number of amenities attractive to both families and business. The city is surrounded by greenery, including three rolling golf courses, acres of parkland and abundant natural forest preserves. Homeowners are attracted to a number of new housing opportunities, including affordable condominiums, luxury town homes and single-family homes in Wood Dale. New along the Thorndale Corridor & Irving Park Road
Retail and hospitality opportunities abound within both the Thorndale Corporate Corridor and the Irving Park Road central business district. The city approved its Thorndale Corridor Master Plan in preparation for the Elgin O’Hare Western Access expressway expansion. Since then, the city has established a tax increment financing district to encourage redevelopment that supports the master plan. “We expect the master plan with the support of TIF funds will drive redevelopment of the area adjacent to the under-construction Illinois Route 390,” said Kelley Chrisse, Wood Dale Assistant Community Development Director. “Opportunities exist for TIF funding for redevelopment along this corridor.” The vision for the new Corporate Main Street is centered on a walkable, mixed-use thoroughfare anchoring: 1.9 million square feet of 5-6 story office towers 107,000-square-foot restaurant/retail space 1.9 million-square-foot FlexTech light industrial 2,420 hotel rooms 415 multi-family housing units 120,000-square-foot recreation center Direct transit access to Chicago
Crossroads Tavern & Eatery Where family, friends and fun come together
(630) 765-3578
Central business district redevelopment plans also are ongoing in accordance with a 2013 vision plan establishing a sense of identity for the downtown intersection of Wood Dale Road and Irving Park Road (Illinois Route 19). With more than 25,000 vehicles on Irving Park Road each day and two major shopping centers, expanded amenities are designed to benefit residents and bring new focus to the city center. One of the major projects along Irving Park Road is the construction of the Randall Residence, a six-story, mixed use senior care facility. Plans call for support services on the first floor, and 140 total units consisting of one-bedroom memory care units and assisted living with studio, one and two-bedroom options. Construction is ongoing; the building shell is complete; and the interior work is underway. An early 2017 completion is anticipated. HEALTH CARE
F
From babies and births to broken bones, cardiac and cancer care, to the most sophisticated medical treatments and technology, a number of top tier health care providers and facilities serve the Wood Dale community. Humble horse-and-buggy beginnings of yesteryear have paved the way for today’s premier health systems offering proactive community health services. AMITA HEALTH ADVENTIST MEDICAL CENTER / GLENOAKS
701 Winthrop Ave. Glendale Heights (630) 545-8000 THEN: In the early 1970s, Glendale Heights leaders rallied to develop a hospital to provide much needed health care services to the community. Residents formed the Glendale Heights Community Hospital Auxiliary and held fundraisers in anticipation of construction. Developer Harold Reskin donated five acres of land and the hospital purchased the other 10 acres of land that originally housed the childhood home of Merle Reskin, a founding father of Glendale Heights. A groundbreaking ceremony for the hospital was held on Dec. 18, 1977, and Adventist GlenOaks Hospital officially opened as Glendale Heights Community Hospital on March 9, 1980. NOW: For more than 30 years, AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center, GlenOaks has provided personalized, compassionate care in Chicago’s western suburbs. Part of AMITA Health, the medical center is a certified Primary Stroke Center, certified Chest Pain Center and Level II Trauma Center. GlenOaks has more than 350 physicians on staff offering a full range of services, including emergency care, cardiology and cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, interventional radiology, surgery, oncology, diagnostic imaging, behavioral health, orthopedics, obstetrics and more. AMITA Health GlenOaks received the 2016 Healthgrades Patient Safety
Excellence Award, which recognizes excellence in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications. In addition, GlenOaks earned a spot on The Leapfrog Group’s list of 98 Top Hospitals. Top Hospitals perform at the highest levels nationally based on Leapfrog’s rigorous quality and safety standards. AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center, GlenOaks is located north of North Avenue and south of Army Trail Road in nearby Glendale Heights. AMITA HEALTH ALEXIAN BROTHERS MEDICAL CENTER / ELK GROVE VILLAGE 800 E. Biesterfield Rd. Elk Grove Village (847) 437-5500 THEN: Although only the first three floors were completed in 1966, members of the Alexian Brothers were anxious to show their new Elk Grove Village hospital to the community. Doors opened to the public May 14 for a sneak preview. Originally built as a seven-story, $8,000,000, 224-bed hospital, its unique design was often referred to as the “open fan” base and the “bow tie” design. On June 12, l966, the hospital was formally dedicated with Bishop Cletus O’Donnell presiding at the blessing. The 144-bed hospital opened June 20, 1966. NOW: AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Elk Grove Village has more than 900 physicians on staff, representing 80 medical and surgical specialties. Alexian Brothers Medical Center has earned national recognition for providing the highest quality care and outstanding patient results, including certification from The Joint Commission for stroke, heart failure, joint replacement, oncology and bariatric surgery. In addition, Alexian Brothers Medical Center has earned top recognition for quality and safety measures from numerous national organizations, including by The Leapfrog Group and U.S. News & World Report, which has ranked Alexian Brothers in the top 10 in the state for the third consecutive year. The medical center treats more than 18,000 inpatients and performs thousands of inpatient and outpatient surgeries. To improve care for adults age 65 and older, the emergency department at Alexian Brothers Medical Center addresses the unique health issues that occur in an older population. Emergency Care for Seniors was created for and offers a patient-centered team of physicians, nurses, social service providers, case managers and other support personnel who provide a quality and caring experience. ELMHURST HOSPITAL 155 E. Brush Hill Rd. Elmhurst (331) 221-1000 THEN: A graduate of Rush Medical College, 29-year-old physician Edward Marquardt and his wife, Martha, moved in 1905 from rural Bensenville to Elmhurst. The physician, who had been making house calls, began seeing more patients after trading in his horse and buggy for a 1906 Kissell automobile. In 1921 Dr. Marquardt, Edwin F. Deicke and other community leaders proposed building a local hospital at a meeting of the Elmhurst Boosters Club. A site at Avon and Schiller streets in Elmhurst was purchased in 1925. One year and $125,000 later on Oct. 10, the 85-bed Elmhurst Hospital was dedicated, becoming first hospital in DuPage County. Elizabeth Neumann was the first baby born at Elmhurst Hospital on Oct. 16, and years later she returned as a staff nurse.

HEALTH CARE NOW: Elmhurst Hospital is the anchor of a comprehensive health system with multiple locations and services designed to enhance the health of the communities and customers served. In 2011, Elmhurst Hospital opened an 866,000-square-foot, acute care hospital with 259 private patient rooms, a modern emergency department and technologically advanced surgical suites. Elmhurst Hospital incorporates the latest trends in health care facility design and is home to some of the area’s most advanced technology. The hospital is the 18th largest in the Chicago area according to Crain’s, and is one of 20 acute care hospitals worldwide designated as a Planetree patient-centered health care organization. The hospital operates walk-in clinics at Jewel-Osco stores in Bensenville, Franklin Park, Lombard, River Forest and Westmont, and immediate care centers in Addison, Hinsdale and Lombard. The $20 million, three-floor, 33,000-square-foot facility at 8 Salt Creek Ln., Hinsdale, provides immediate care, primary care, behavioral health, digital imaging, lab, rehabilitation and physical therapy and occupational health services. The hospital was first in the western suburbs to implant the Medtronic Reveal LINQ Insertable Cardiac Monitor, the smallest-available wireless cardiac monitor that allows physicians to monitor a patient’s heart for up to three years. Elmhurst also was first in Illinois to use Topera 3D Mapping System for more accurate ablation to treat persistent AFib. In 2015, the Bariatrics and Weight Management Center opened to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for weight management. Other new services include a Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic to care for women in high-risk pregnancies and a cardio-oncology program to monitor and treat heart complications caused by cancer treatments.

LIBRARY
N
Nestled amid towering oaks is one of the best community resources in town, the Wood Dale Public Library District. Located at the intersection of Wood Dale Road and School Street, this hidden gem is one of the busiest medium-sized libraries in Illinois, drawing patrons from all over the suburban area. Providing library service for more than 50 years, the facility offers patron-friendly services and programs for all ages, in a welcoming environment that makes everyone feel like they belong. Entering the library is like exploring a grand lodge, similar to the lodge at Starved Rock State Park or the Grand Canyon. Under the tall, wood-beamed cathedral ceilings, discover the more than 100,000 items available for check-out, whether it is a print book or magazine; popular entertainment or educational DVD; or audiobook. Patrons who use mobile devices have access to thousands of items to stream or download from the library’s downloadable content collection featuring eBooks, movies, music, magazines and more. Use your iPad, Chromebook, tablet or mobile phone to keep connected to library resources 24/7. The library also offers several services from its eResource collection to help improve your quality of life, whether it’s updating a resume, studying for an entrance exam or professional certification, researching family history, finding out the product rankings of that new purchase or taking an instructor-led six-week online course.

All services can be accessed at a library public access computer station, our in-library use laptops or iPads or conveniently from the patron’s home or mobile location. The Wood Dale Library offers more than 1,000 free enriching arts, culture and entertainment, programs a year for all ages. Early learning workshops engage the youngest patrons and teens can socialize at funfilled events.
