The celebration of the academe’s perpetual growth despite chains of disasters through all these years pondered by TSUians in the celebration of its 108th Year Founding Anniversary, flaunting the opulence of the country’s prominent festivities with laudable performances of visitors from South Korea, Thailand, Israel and Bulgaria on December 2–6. In line with the theme, “Rebuilding the University towards Globalization and ASEAN Integration,” the weeklong celebration includes commendable events, competitions and activities in relation to the nation’s goal of building credible and effective institutions through governance and institutional reforms, policy consistency and regulatory efficiency. Pioneering the series of activities was the launching of TSU– College of Architecture and Fine

Arts Exhibit, featuring award– winning art works of the students followed by the opening of booths. The ribbon–cutting ceremony of the new LED Screen, donated by the TSU–Alumni Association, was also conducted. The cheers from the jam– packed crowd got even more extreme, overpowering the intensity of sun’s heat, as the nation’s primary festivals were encapsulated from the grand parade up to the spectacular performances of the

campuses of the university namely TSU – Main, San Isidro and Lucinda campus at Dr. Mario P. Manese Gymnasium. It’s definitely a “season of blooming” after the Team Main which comprises of the (College of Arts and Social Sciences, College of Business and Accountancy, College of Engineering and College of Public Administration) divulged the Panagbenga Spirit on their presentation of the Baguio City’s Panagbenga Festival, qualifying them to seized a back–to–

back triumph on Street Dance and Float Parade. Meanwhile, last year’s champion the Kadayawan Festival of Team Lucinda (College of Education, College of Science and College of Science) secured the second spot while the glee of Masscara Festival of Team San Isidro (College of Architecture and Fine Arts, College of Technology and College of Computer Studies) emerged as third place. The new Festival King and Queen were crowned after every

college represented their corresponding festivals with all magnificence and composure. Included on the activities relished by TSUians are the Mr. and Ms. Face of Leadership, Organizations’ Got Talent, and Battle of the Bands, Lantern Parade, Amazing Race, Doodle and Costume Making Contest. The weeklong celebration was ended by giving tribute to all outstanding officials, faculty and staff of the university on the Alumni Day at TSU Gymnasium.

TSU–Hip Hop Dance Team rules dance floor Joseph DE JESUS

Performing despite all odds, TSU– Hip hop Dance Team grooves on the mats, permitting them to bring home two gold from the National Dance Championship (NDC)–Regional Qualifier for Central Luzon at SM Clark, Angeles City, Pampanga on December 14. Long run of preparations were paid off as the team grabbed the championship on both the COED which comprises of 15 members of combined

men and women and the All–girls Hip hop, consists of 11 delegates. “Actually, we aim not to be the champs but just to hear our hearts out and perform once again with the floor mats of NDC was a grant to our dreams,” Mr. Daniel Dizon, the adviser of the team, said. Their triumph was also made possible through the efforts of the Supreme Student Council in collaboration with TSU Chorale on organizing a concert for a cause to provide financial assistance for

the team. “They have a strong parental support together with their passion to dance is their inspiration and maybe the reason why we have bring that enough power and execution to hang us to the top,” Dizon added. Meanwhile, the team will continue their journey as they represent Central Luzon on the upcoming NDC at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on February 28–March 1, 2015.

TSU yields certified CEs Bonjoebee R. BELLO

As announced by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), Tarlac State University–College of Engineering (COEng) yielded 22 newly–licensed Civil Engineers (CEs) on December 12. In relation to the results provided by PRC, 20 of the board passers are first time takers while two were repeaters, getting an overall passing rate of 49.98% exceeding the 48.15% on May. Engr. Camilo Rivera, Chairman of CE Department, together with some alumni and CE students conducted prayer meetings as part of the preparation for the licensure examination. According to Engr. Rivera, the lessons learned by the students in their major subjects are not enough to pass the licensure exam. “Iyong mga naniniwala sa prayers at nag-attend sa prayer meeting namin, halos sila ‘yong pumasa,” Engr. Rivera said as he expressed his insights on the results. To increase the national passing rate, CE department added a new subject, Correlations, for the fifth

year as a groundwork for the students to control those who are not ready to take the exam. “Iyong mga nagpipilit na grumadweyt kahit hindi pa dapat grumadweyt, iyong mga nago-overloading sa mga major subjects para mabilis grumadweyt, sila iyong nahihirapang pumasa,” Engr. COESSE, the TSU–Psychological Society received an early Christmas present as it made its cheerful comeback after dethroning The Educators of Technology and Livelihood Education (TETLE) on Lantern Making Contest. The Japanese inspired lantern, decorated with twigs and origami made from recycled paper s accompanied by two muses in their kimono and parasol which signifies discipline and virtues and is also aiming for global relevance paraded together with 43 others along the stretch of F. Tañedo Street to Dr. Mario P. Manese Gymnasium on December 4. TETLE, bearing a giant lantern composed of recycled plastic materials and holding the previous title, was awarded 2nd place. “We are really aiming for something Japan for TSU, not just to show off. TSU holds Mid–year Grad Joseph DE JESUS

TSU held its 26th Commencement Exercises on December 14. A total of 218 candidates from the nine colleges marched at Dr. Mario P. Manese Gymnasium to formally receive their diploma.

Filling the numbers of graduates are 79 students from the College of Business and Accountancy, 68 from the College of Education, 36 from the College of Engineering, 10 from the College of Computer

Studies, eight from the College of Nursing, seven from the College of Public Administration, five from the College of Technolog y, four from the College of Arts and Social Sciences and one the from College of Law.

The graduates, after completing all requirements needed, are now official members of the TSU Alumni Association. In addition, the Mid-year graduation was part of the Foundation Week.

Showcasing their ingenuity on creating attires, students from the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) claim the championship in the on-the-spot Costume Making Contest on December 3. Bearing the theme, “Rewind-Replay: A Blast from the Past #ThrowbackAnime,” all the participating organizations conveyed a gala of Anime Characters at Dr. Mario P. Manese Gymnasium. With only 60 minutes to prepare, representatives from PICE swiftly dressed–up

The runners up are from the Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineering– Operations Research Society of the Philippines (PIIE-ORSP) and Tropang No Choice. The League of Perspective English Educators (LPEE) from the College of Education (COEd) was hailed as the most talented organization during the Organization’s Got Talent. Giving an exemplary portrayal of the prominent story of Elsa and Anna from the animated movie Frozen in tune, the LPEE Jazz entertained TSUians at Dr. Mario P. Manese Gymnasium on the night of December 2. The winning piece was originally

written by Beejay Tatu, a COEd student. Meanwhile, a representative from Rotaract who gave a solo song number and WOG’s own acoustic rendition of Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran enable them to got 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. Orgs Got Talent, on its 2nd year, continues to serve as an avenue to recognize the talents of TSUians. The event was organized by the Supreme Student Council.

As part of the Organization’s Olympics, the Institute of Electronics Engineers of The Philippines (IECEP) successfully won in the Pakwan Eating Contest at TSU Gym on December 6. IECEP finished off their watermelon first before the other 25 participating organizations respresented by one member

each. In this game, each representative from an organization has to munch down one whole watermelon with his/her mouth without using his/her hands as fast as they could. The first to finish will be the winner. The Chemical Society and The Generalist placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Ipinamalas ng mga TSUians ang kanilang angking talento sa larangan ng sining sa ginanap na Doodle Art Contest sa TSU gymnasium noong ika-6 ng Disyembre, ganap na ika–9 ng umaga. Bilang bahagi ng Foundation Days, layunin ng kompetisyong ito na maipahayag ang pagiging ‘TSUian’ ng bawat sumali. Alinsunod sa temang “TSU,” labing–walong organisasyon sa iba’t ibang kolehiyo ang nagtunggali para ibahagi ang natatanging talento. Nakamit ni John Melvin Garcia, mula sa The Studio, opisyal na publikasyon ng Kolehiyo ng Arkitektura at Tanging Sining, ang unang gantimpala matapos mailapat ang kanyang obra sa isipan ng mga hurado na naging daan para magkamit siya ng P500 bilang premyo.

Ang seminar ay pinamunuan ni Jun Cruz Reyes, isa sa mga natatanging muhon ng Wikang Filipino ng ating panahon at kasama sa mga hurado ng Carlos Palanca Award. UAPSA– TSU grabs awards on NAWC ‘14 Jerusha Erika TUNGOL and Pauline GAÑA

Far Eastern University– The University attained recognition anew after eleven TSUians from the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary (UAPSA) filled their pots as they won several awards during the National Architecture Week Competition (NAWC), December 13. Leading the roster of winners is the back–to– back victory of Christian Aaron Bondoc and Christian Jan Balaoing who both emerged as champion in Painting and Photography respectively. The tandem of Laredo Angelo Dillera Paras and Leila Mendoza successfully grasped the 2 nd place in Quiz Bee together with Micahelle Joy Dumalaon and Harlyn Pascua in Furniture Design. Meanwhile, Winonalyn Corcuera, Rolly Baluyut and Jeffrey Calixtro were hailed as 3 rd place in Structural Design while Alison Angeles and Ramil Solano as 5 th place also in Quiz Bee. The competition was conducted in part of the National Architecture Week Celebration.

The three–day press conference was contended by 292 campus journalists throughout the region at Villa Alfredo’s Resort, Brgy. Baliti, City of San Fernando Pampanga. Carrying the theme, “Redefining Social Awareness through Journalistic Sensitivity,” the conference aims to

raise the sensitivity among campus journalists by helping them to increase the level of their consciousness on issues worthwhile for responsible writing through various writing and arts competition. The 14th RHEPC was organized by the Association of Tertiary School Paper Advisers of Region III (ATSPAR) in coordination with the Commission on Higher Education. Promoting gender equality…

TSUians urge ‘End VAW Now’ Antoniette Caryl T. YEE

“End VAW Now. It’s Our Duty!” An 18-day campaign to end Violence against Women, conducted by the Gender and Development office, was partaken by TSUians on November 25December 12. In accordance to Republic Act 10398, declaring November 25 as the National Consciousness Day for the Elimination of violence against women and children signed by President Benigno Aquino III, the campaign calls for the elimination of all forms of violence against women through awareness–raising about gender– based violence, strengthening local work and establishing work to end VAW, among undertakings. The T-Shirt Campaign, encouraging students to wear the orange T–shirt every 25th day of the month of November and any day from November 25–December 12 was implemented.

As part of the movement, Facebook and Twitter display were changed into orange and cover photo or any photo supporting the campaign was used by the students throughout the period. Using the hashtags #endVAWph #endVAWtsu via online and social media campaign were also done. In promoting the advocacy, students showed their creativity as they contended for the Poster Making Contest on November 21 having Felipe Santiago, from the College of Education as the champion followed by Melvin Garcia and Jethro Lorenzo, both from the College of Architecture and Fine Arts as 2nd place and 3rd place, respectively. Meanwhile, Supt. Elsa F Miranda, Deputy Provincial Director for Administration–Tarlac Police Provincial Office, spearheaded the seminar and forum on December 12.

TSU imposes EnerCon Mae Anne D. CREENCIA

To minimize the utility expenses of the university, guidelines for Energy Conservation (EnerCon) were enforced upon distribution to different offices and departments. In the guidelines, the time allotment for the utilization of air conditioning units is from 9:00am to 5:00pm only. Lightings should be turned off during lunch break and after office hours, perimeter lights are to be turned on by the civil security personnel on duty from 9:00pm to 5:00am and building lights are to be turned off at 9:00pm after class. Moreover, all students are prohibited to charge their personal cellular phones, laptops and other electronic devices using the outlets of the university. All unused classrooms shall be locked and all electrical devices should be turned

off. Meanwhile, regular inspection and maintenance of comfort rooms will be practiced to avoid lavish usage of water. To strengthen the EnerCon policy, every official in the campus should check the compliance of all personnel under his supervision. Also, utility personnel, security guards, and the rest of the personnel of the university shall report violation to senior officials. The noted monthly utility expenditures in our university are the air conditioning units, lightings, computers, and elevator for the university hostel, water system, refrigerators, water dispensers and other electronic/electric devices, utilization of classrooms and offices, and fuel consumptions for the university vehicles.

United Harmony Band regales TSUians Jhayvi C. DIZON

Serenading their fellow TSUians anew, the United Harmony Band unveiled their unceasing comeback as they caroled their way for second feat during the Acoustic Gig on December 16. Singing their own version of their winning mash-up of “We are young” by Fun and “Get me” by MYMP, their melodious symphony was heard at the Engineering Grounds. According to Edmer Manzanillo, band vocalist and guitarist, their line– up was perfectly fit to the voice of their lead vocalist and the beat of both songs complements to each other, enabling them to spice up the night. Formerly known as the CBI band, the group was not able to join the

second season due to ailing condition of their vocalist. Completing the members of the new band are Althea Silvestre (lead vocalist), John Jethro Santiago (beat box), Elvin Cruz (lead guitarist) and Clive Maliwat (bass guitarist). “We were the champion po kasi nung season 1, so yung inspiration po namin is to reclaim the title backed up by support from our friends and classmates. It is a very overwhelming win po para sa’min,” Silvestre said. Meanwhile, Chopzuy Band won 2nd place while D’JASS as 3rd place. The Supreme Student Council, the organizer of the event, is looking forward for another jam–packed season of showcasing TSUian’s talents.

Tinta II, the literary and arts competition of The Blaze, the Official Student Publication of the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA), showcased students’ capabilities as it culminates its 2nd year on December 12. Repleksyon, an avenue for aspiring writers to express themselves in a broader spectrum, centers the concept of their entries. With the theme, “Ready, Set, Write,” students who successfully won competition were given recognition

on the awards night at the Engineering AVR. “Ang Tinta II ay isang patunay na hindi lamang sa academics namamayagpag ang CBA students kundi maging sa paglikha ng mga akdang literature (at arts). Manalo, matalo, ang mahalaga masaya tayo sa kinalabasan ng anumang pinagpawisan nating akda,” Raven Escaño, Literary and Cultures Editor, said. The chosen pieces will be published at Alab 4, the literary folio of The Blaze.

Offlane, the most independent player of the team and the one to deny the farm of the carry. Support and hard support, well they buy utilities for the team and as their name implies… support. Now that you understand it (sort of) let’s scrutinize why men and also other women are addicted to it. In one game ten heroes are picked over a pool of a hundred plus heroes. Nakakalungkot mang isipin, sa kabila ng pagiging “Non –smoking university” na alinsunod sa Batas Republika Blg. 9211 o Anti-Tobacco Law, marami na ang tuluyang nahulog sa bitag ng bisyong ito. Ngunit higit na makatawag–pansin ang di–umano’y lantarang paninigarilyo ng ilan sa mga itinuturing nating pangalawang magulang sa unibersidad imbes na ipagbawal ang ganitong gawain. Maliwanag na nakasaad sa Seksyon 5. A. mahigpit na ipinagbabawal ang paninigarilyo sa mga pampublikong lugar lalo na sa loob ng paaralan para protektahan ang mga mamamayan sa masamang epekto nito. Ngunit ayon sa datos na nakalap ng World Health Organization, mahigit kalahati sa kabuuang bilang ng kabataang Pilipino na nag–aaral, partikular iyong nasa edad 7 hanggang 15, ang gunom na sa bisyong ito. Dagdag pa nila, liban sa mga kumplikasyong bunga ng paninigarilyo sa katawan dahil sa mahigit–kumulang 4, 000 kemikals kabilang ang nicotine na sanhi ng pagka–adik na pumipinsala sa kalusugan, isa sa apat na naninigarilyo ang namamatay kada araw. Lubhang nakakabahala ang bilang na naitala ngunit mas nakaka– alarma ang mga bilang ng mga guro na mas pinipiling tangkilikin ang bisyong ito kaysa labanan. Marahil, sinasabi ng iba na walang karapatan ang sinuman na panghimasukan ang buhay ng iba, lalo na ang mga nagpapasaya sa kanila pero bilang mga tagapaghatid ng kaalaman, marapat lamang na makakitaan ang bawat isa ng magandang halimbawa ng pagsunod sa mga katuruan at adbokasiyang ibinabahagi sa mga estudyante. Paano tayo paniniwalaan ng iba kung hindi natin isinasagawa ang mga sinasabi natin? Paano tayo magsasawalang–bahala kung kapakanan na ng nakararami ang pinag–uusapan? Paano natin maaatim na magpasasa sa panandaliang kasiyahan kung ang kapalit nito ay buhay ng iba? Wala namang masama sa paggawa ng ikasasaya ng puso, ngunit walang sinuman ang may karapatang maminsala sa buhay ng iba. Ang paghila sa kapwa sa kapahamakan ay isang mabigat na pagkakasala na tulad sa paglalapit sa isang aba sa kamatayan. Bilang isang kabataan na itinuturing na pag–asa ng bayan, marapat lamang na patunayan natin ang katotohanan ng taguring ito sa pamamagitan ng pagsusunog ng kilay sa pag–aaral at hindi sa pagsusunog ng baga habang nakikipagpatintero kay kamatayan. Hindi naman malaking kawalan pagpapakita ng malasakit at pagmamahal sa tinubuang lupa sa simpleng pagsunod sa halip na gumugol ng limpak–limpak na salapi sa paninigarilyo. Gayundin naman, ang mga pinakamamahal naming guro ay nararapat lamang na pag–ukulan ng respeto ng mga estudyante dahil sa kanilang dedikasyon sa pagtuturo. Ngunit higit pa sa pagsaludo ang dapat tamasahin ng mga guro natin na ipinapamuhay ang mga prinsipyong ini–uukit sa ating mumunting isipan at naglalayo sa atin sa kapahamakan. Ang simpleng pagsunod sa batas at hindi paninigarilyo lalo na sa harap ng mga estudyante ay isang magandang halimbawa nito. Siguro, hindi ito madaling iwaksi sa sistema pero kung talagang gugustuhin ay magagawa kahit gaano pa kahirap. Ang tagumpay sa pagkakawala sa paka–alipin ng bisyong ito ay maituturing na pinakamainam na parangal sa sarili kaysa sa huwad na sayang dulot ng paninigarilyo.

sana ang mga ipinapatupad na batas sa ating unibersidad ngunit bakit po tila hindi ito organisado at nagdudulot lamang ng kaguluhan? Na mismong ang mga nagpapatupad nito ay hindi u m a n o sumusunod at dali dali na lamang binabago ang naturang batas para masabing hindi sila lumalabag? Ano po ba talaga ang naka-‘ban’? Plastic bag o plastic cup o lahat ng klase ng PLASTIC? Nagtatanong lang po... Ang pag-aksyon po ba sa mga kakulangan at hinaing ng mga estudyante ay nangyayari lamang kapag ito’y

naipaalam na sa madla? Hindi po ba ito nalalaman ng ating administrasyon kung hindi pa mailalathala? Hindi po ba tungkulin ninyong alamin at sulusyonan ang anumang pangangailangan ng unibersidad para sa ikabubuti ng mga estudyante? Nagtatanong lang po... Bakit po mas masisipag pang pumasok ang mga lecturers kumpara sa mga regular na propesor? Dahil po ba per oras ang bayad nila at hindi sila sasahod kung hindi sila papasok kaya mas masipag sila kumpara sa mga regular na propesor na sasahod kahit hindi pumapasok? Parang unfair naman po yata iyon lalo na at balibalita di umano na na-de-delay ng ilang buwan ang sweldo ng mga job order. Nagtatanong lang po... Pwede po bang basta basta na lang magpalit ng subject description sa curriculum? Hindi po ba kung anong curriculum ang pinasukan mo ay iyon na ang susundin hanggang makagraduate? Bakit po may kolehiyo na agad nakapagdesisyon na palitan ang OJT ng research? Nagtatanong lang po...

insan ay may isang liderestudyante ang pumuta sa opisina ng aming publikasyon upang magpatulong sa pagfinalize ng subtitles ng pelikula na isasali niya sa isang film fest. Ito ay nasa wikang kapampangan at kailangan ng pagsasalin sa Ingles dahil tapos na itong maisalin sa Tagalog. Tinulungan namin siya ng isa kong kasamahan at hindi ko maiwasang hindi mapuna ang tema pelikulang nabuo niya. Tungkol ito sa isang bakla na pinatay ng isang lalaki, dahil lamang siya ay isang bakla. Kamakailan lamang, pumutok ang balita tungkol sa pagpatay kay Jeffrey Laude o mas kilala bilang Jennifer Laude, isang transgender. Pinatay siya ng isang sundalong Amerikano sa Subic na si Pemberton. Palasak na rin ang mga kwento patungkol sa mga bakla na binubugbog ng kanilang mga ama o nobyong kinakasama. Malinaw na sa panahon ngayon, hindi pa gaanong tanggap ng lipunang ating ginagalawan dito sa Pilipinas ang mga kasapi ng LGBT Community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered). First year college ako noong una kong marinig ang tungkol sa LGBT Community at ang tungkol sa mga kalagayan nila. Hindi ko naman sa sinasabing wala ni isang LGBT ang nirerespeto dito sa Pilipinas. May mga kilalang personalidad sa ating bansa na bahagi ng LGBT ang tanggap, nirerespeto at tinitingala ng lipunan gaya na lamang nina Boy Abunda at Aiza Seguerra. Pero marahil hindi pa nga ito ang panahon na mabubura ang stigma sa taong bayan na ang mga LGBT ay hindi karespe-respeto, itinuturing na mga malas, salot, at kung anu-ano pang mga masasakit na salitang pinupukol sa kanila. Sila na ang tanging nais lamang ay magpakatotoo sa sarili. Siguro ay sasabihin ng iba na tanging babae at lalaki lamang ang nilikha ng Diyos kaya makasalanan silang maituturing pero sa aking palagay ay isang malaking

pagkakamali na gamitin ang salita ng Diyos laban sa mga kapatid nating LGBT. Isinilang din naman sila bilang mga babae o lalaki. Sa aking personal na palagay, mali na sabihin nating kasalanan sa Diyos ang maging bakla o tomboy. Mali rin na isiping abnormal sila dahil sa klase ng buhay na pinili nia. Kaya nga tayo binigyan ng Diyos ng free will upang gamitin natin iyon. Pinili nila na magpakatotoo na bakla sila o tomboy. Sa palagay ko, may mga miyembro ng LGBT Community ang mas mabubuti pang tao kaysa sa mga “straight” na babae at lalaki. Minsan ay nakapila ako sa isang public toilet sa Burnham Park sa Baguio. Hiwalay kasi ang CR kung saan pwede kang dumumi at umihi. Magkaibang bayad din. ‘Yung kasunod ko sa pila, na

hindi ko sigurado kung babae talaga o transgendered, nakita kong nag-alangan pumasok sa cubicle na pinanggalingan ko dahil wala namang toilet bowl doon para umihi. Ang public toilet na iyon kasi ay katulad ng sa bansang Japan na iihi ka na lang sa sahig, pero hindi naman talaga sa sahig kasi may parang toilet bowl din siya na nasa sahig mismo at diretso na sa drainage. Wala ka na rin kailangan i-flush. But then, you won’t be seating like a queen anymore while urinating, instead, you sit like a frog. Basta gets niyo na kung anong klaseng urinal ang tinutukoy ko. Dahil nga kalalabas ko lang sa cubicle, tinanong ako nung kasunod ko sa pila na di ko sigurado kung babae o hindi kung wala na daw bang ibang urinal na may toilet bowl at napansin kong nag-aalangan na siyang magCR. Pinagtitinginan na rin siya ng mga taong nakapila. Napagtanto kong tama ang kutob ko, isa siyang transgendered nung lumabas siya at pumunta dun sa

mga babaeng nangongolekta ng bayad sa paggamit ng CR at nagbayad siya ulit para makagamit ng CR na may toilet bowl. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang iniisip ng mga babae tungkol sa transgendered na nakasabay namin dahil lumabas na ako sa CR pero ang nasa isip ko lang nun ay sana magkaroon sila ng sariling cubicle kung saan hindi mava-violate ang rights nila bilang mga LGBT, na ang hirap ng sitwasyon nila dahil mukha nga silang mga babae pero may mga pangangailan pa rin sila na tulad sa mga lalaki at ang paggamit ng public toilet na katulad ng sa Burnham Park ay isang malaking pahirap sa kanila. Bilib ako sa mga siyudad na naglalaan ng isang cubicle para sa mga LGBT. May nakita na akong ganoon sa Legaspi City, Albay noong 2013 at may isang politiko na rin yata ang nagpasa ng ordinansa sa kanyang lugar na nasasakupan na tutugon sa pangangailangan ng mga LGBT pagdating sa mga public toilets. Untiunti, tila nagiging kapansin-pansin na ang nabubuong respeto para sa mga kapatid natin sa LGBT Community. Naririnig na ng lipunan ang boses nila. Nasasaksihan na ng mundo ang mga talentong taglay nila, na hindi naman talaga sila mga salot o malas. Hindi ako miyembro ng LGBT Community kung iyon ay itatanong niyo. Pero sa mga nakalipas na iang taon, lumaki ang respeto ko sakanila. Kung noon na hindi ko pa kilala ang salitang LGBT at bakla-tomboy lang ang alam ko at wala akong pakialam sa kahit anong tungkol sakanila kasi nga hindi naman ako tomboy, pero hindi ko kailanman minasama na bakla o tomboy ang isang tao. Simula nung nakakahalubilo ko na ang mga miyembro ng LGBT, namulat ako sa katotohanan tungkol sa kalagayan nila. Hindi madali ang makuha ang pagtanggap na nais nila mula sa ibang mga tao, minsan mula sa sarili nilang mga pamilya. Walang masama sa pagiging isang bakla, tomboy, bisexual at transgender. Tao din sila na nilikha ng Diyos katulad nating mga “straight” na babae at lalaki. Hindi malaking kabawasan sa pagkatao natin ang tanggapin sila sa lipunan at respetuhin.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Hello The Work! Isa po akong normal na estudyanteng mahilig magbasa ng mga tula at ng mga kwento. Lagi ko pong inaabangan ang mga tula sa dyaryo nyo at ang Obra. Nagtataka lang po ako kung bakit laging limited lang ang kopya ng Obra kahit lahat naman nagbabayad ng The Work fee kapag enrollment. Minsan ko na po naranasan na maubusan ng kopya ng obra. Yung cassette tape po yung itsura. 1st year pa lang po kasi ako nun kaya di pa ako masyadong aware. Buti na lang at binigay sa akin nung kaklase ko yung kopya niya kaya kumpleto pa rin ang mga Obra ko mula 2011. Hindi po ba talaga pwede na lahat ng estudyante ay mabigyan ng kopya? Kawawa po kasi ang mga estudyante na nauubusan. Sana po ay masagot niyo ang aking katanungan. ■ Cherie

Nagkakahalaga ng 50 pesos ang publication ng The Work kada semestre at ang halaga ng isang kopya ng Obra ay higit sa 50 pesos. Ang pondo ng publication ay nahahati sa iba pang gastusin gaya ng pagbili ng office supplies, pagpapa-imprenta ng mga dyaryo, seminars at training, subsidy sa mga college publication, at iba pa. Kung gagawin namin na one is to one ang bigayan ng Obra, maaaring masaid ang pondo ng publikasyon. Gustuhin man namin na mabigyan ang bawat estudyante ng tig-iisang kopya ngunit kailangan din naming ikonsidera ang iba pang mga gastusin. Taking its final leap, the Year of the Wooden Horse is about to bid farewell, leaving footprints of bittersweet journey as it carved a new tale to be added to the epic history of our dear Philippines that reformed our lives. VHONG NAVARRO: ‘BINABOY AKO.’ The national television scene was blasted by the “tell-all interview” of It’s Showtime host and comedian Vhong Navarro inside the hospital room of St. Luke’s Medical Center saying he was assaulted by a group of men led by businessman Cedric Lee inside a condominium unit in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig on January 24 after a photo of him beaten up quickly spread on social networking sites. However, he was accused of attempting to rape his friend Deniece Cornejo who invited him to her condominium but he insisted it was all a “set–up” and Lee allegedly blackmailed and tried to extort P2 million from him and threatened to kill him. This gave way to the photo parodies and memes: Punta kasa condo. Dala kang foods” and “Tara sa condo ko? May bulalo ba dun?” All his It’s Showtime co–hosts, friends, families and fans gave their strong support and sympathy to him on this brutal case. PHILIPPINE ARENA: WORLD’S BIGGEST MIXED–USE THEATER The 100th year anniversary of the Iglesia ni Cristo was partaken by approximately two million people at the Philippine Arena located at Ciudad de Victoria, Bocaue, Bulacan, showcasing the church’s discipline and influence. Philippine Arena, taking up 810,000 square feet (7.5 hectares) of land, holding a dome spanning of 390,000 square feet (3.6 hectares) and having a 55,000 seating capacity was formally opened on July 21. It was hailed as the World’s Biggest Mixed– used Theater after beating the Taples Center in Los Angeles, United States with only 21,000 people. CEBUANA GODDESSES: INT’L BEAUTY QUEENS The Philippines’ beauteous Jamie Herrell made the entire nation proud after being throned as Ms. Earth 2014 at UP Theather in Diliman, Quezon City, November 29. Herrell outshined 84 other candidates during the question and answer portion where she responded intelligently, “Global warming has been (an) overdue issue. I will use my title to inspire others, help our environment and start with kids. They will be the people of tomorrow if we teach them. They will help the community.” Aside from winning the title, she also bagged three special awards, namely: Miss Earth Hannah’s Beach Resort, Best in Swimsuit, and Sun for Miss Earth Award. She was the second Filipino who grasped the crown after Karla Henry, her fellow Cebuana, on 2008. It was also a good attempt for the country’s bet Kris Tiffany Janson, also from Cebu City, who made it to the top three of Miss Intercontinental 2014, held at Maritim Hotel Madgeburg, Germany few days after Herrell’s victory. Janson is the first Filipina to represent the country in the beauty pageant. She was also awarded as Ms. Photogenic. PINAY SINGERS: WORLD–CLASS ‘X–FACTOR’ SENSATIONS The spectacular voices of Filipinos were heard abroad, enabling two Pinay singers to invade the international music industry. To welcome the year with a bang, a 46 year–old Pinay caregiver Rose Fostanes who once tried her fortune to have a stable job overseas, paved her trail to stardom after her valiant rendition of the iconic song My Way. Fostanes was hailed the first champion of X Factor Israel. Despite her victory, she still wanted to remain as a caregiver in return of the good fate it gave to her. “I just can’t believe it, I feel like I’m floating on a cloud right now. Thank you so much Australia, I couldn’t have done it without you,”these are the exact words stated by Marlisa Punzalan after being the latest and the youngest winner in the history of X Factor Australia at the age of 15. Punzalan serenade them with her soulful rendition of her single debut Stand by You. She attested the saying, “Try and try until you succeed,” for she once lost in Australia’s Got Talent.

JPE, BONG, JINGGOY: ‘PORK–BARREL’ PRISON BUDDIES The story behind the multibillion-peso pork barrel scam orchestrated by supposed mastermind Janet Lim–Napoles revealed its new angle as three Philippine Senators Juan Ponce Enrile (JPE), Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Jose “Jinggoy” Ejercito Estrada were arrested for plunder due to their illegal kickbacks on the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF). According to the Ombudsman, the three senators took undue advantage of their official position to illegally divert their congressional allocations in exchange for kickbacks, with the projects turning out to be ghost projects, having illegal transactions to Napoles. Revilla was the first lawmaker arrested for the non-bailable charge of plunder in connection with his alleged involvement on the PDAF scam with an amassed of P242 million bribes. Revilla was detained at Unit One of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center. His fellow lawmaker and comrade Estrada was also apprehended at the PNO Custodial Center and charge of pocketing P183.79 million from his PDAF while Enrile followed his associates but was on “hospital arrest” at PNP General Hospital as his motion for detention was granted by Sandiganbayan 3rd Divison due to his medical condition brought by his age. The 90–year-old senator was suspectedof aP172 millionscam. EDCA: RP’S DEFENSE ON DISPUTED WATERS? The entire nation was surprised to the state–visit of the world’s most powerful President Barack Obama of the United States of America to strengthen the partnership of both countries. An hour before the much–awaited state visit, the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) was signed by both parties. Obama assured to be the “iron clad” of the country on the claims of China to the West Philippine Sea legally owned by ours as he imparted his desire of implementing equality at all times including on the International Tribune on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). Under EDCA, US was given the right to for and add military bases for 10 years to educate, prepare and empower our military forces. The base commander was given the authority to utilize the foreign facilities in preparation to upcoming combats. Undoubtedly, the government gambled in the name of territory after spending approximately P9.8 million for Obama’s accommodation with probabilities of uncertainties due to US conglomerate with China, being their top investor and by abridging the Article 18, Section 25 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution prohibiting establishment of foreign military forces. LAUDE’S SLAY: LGBT’S FIGHT FOR JUSTICE The LGBT Community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) was in boundless fury after their fellow Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude was allegedly slain by Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton on October 11 at the Celzone Lodge in Olongapo City due to “asphyxia by drowning.” According to probers, the brutal death of the 26–year old transgender woman is because of hate crime after it was discovered by Pemberton after he engaged Laude for “sex service.” It was supported by the statement of Barbie, Laude’s friend who accompanied him in the Lodge, who said in an interview that Pemberton did not know that they are gays. However, the DNA sample of the suspect did not match on the condom seen on the crime scene. This hate crime was in contrast to the greater compassion moved by the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican for homosexuals. Also, a matter of colonialism was attached to this case for the suspect is a US Marine under the military treaty. The case is now rolling in the court with the efforts of Laude’s family and supporters and was raised to murder but will took a long run.

HACIENDA BINAY: A BLACK PROPAGANDA? The affirmation of Vice President Jejomar Binay of his desire of winning the presidency for the upcoming 2016 elections bellowed the Philippine Politics but after his declaration, issues of graft and corruption and anomalies during his term as Makati City Mayor created a louder noise to the public. Former Makati Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado revealed the alleged clandestine property of VP Binay located in Rosario Batangas where a parcel of land is under his name. Businessman Antonio Tiu claimed the ownership of the land appealing the Senate Blue Committee to end the examination for his businesses face bankruptcy because of the matter. The issue arises during the investigation of the P2.2 Billion Makati City Hall Building II followed by the P1.33 Billion allotment for Makati Science High School Building project which were said to be too costly and pocketed by the VP. However, VP Binay insisted his innocence stating the issues are only black propagandas to hinder his victory on the election. He also criticized the Administration for being biased on defending their colleagues Senator Franklin Drilon who was suspected for overpriced Iloilo Convention Center and the questionable mansion in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija of Armed Force Chief Allan Purisima. PACMAN: BACK–TO–BACK TRIUMPH The 8th Division world champion and pound for pound king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is definitely a man of the year after defeating two American boxers Timothy Bradley and Chris Algieri. Pacquiao scored a unanimous decision to overthrow WBO Welterweight Champion Timothy Bradley at MGM Grand Garden Arena. The judge had it 116-112, 116-112 and 118-110, enabling the people’s champ to regain his welterweight title and avenged his controversial loss two years ago to Bradley. Bradley finally faced his first downfall. Despite his fiasco to score a knock–out, the people’s champ conquered another American Boxer Chris Algieri in their match in Macau, China on November 22. It seemed to be a dark hour for Algieri after he ruled down six times in their fight. After these successful matches, the world is now waiting for the “Fight of the Century” against Floyd Mayweather Jr. ‘GALING NG PINOY’: THE RISE OF FILIPINO ATHLETES The 40–year drought in FIBA World Cup finally came to an end after Gilas Pilipinas, the national basketball team, seized an emotional 81-79 victory over Senegal. The triumph in Seville, Spain was the Philippines’ first since 1974, when a Filipino team also escaped with an 87-86 win over Central African Republic, when the World Cup was still known as the World Basketball Championships, in Puerto Rico. Another Filipino athlete soared high after Michael Martinez, a 17–year old Figure Skater, ended his run by finishing 19th place in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics with a final score of 184.25 points at the Iceberg Skating Palace. The tropical climate of the country did not hinder the youngest Filipino Olympian to grab a spot in the competition. He also received complements and considered as “a shining star of the future” by a former US Olympian. hristmas as we all know it, is about the celebration of the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. It is about the celebration of hope that our Lord God had given us. And all throughout the years, we simply kept the tradition as a manifestation of our devotion and service. Christmas Day is such a festive day here in our country. It is when we reunite with our family to celebrate all the festivities. And usually it is done with all the decorations sparkled everywhere. Initially, it is the time when we hang our lanterns and flaunt our Christmas lights. Next is when we put up a Christmas tree and décor it with different accessories of ribbons, bells, and to top it all up, a bright star at the peak of the tree. But take a look at these decors around us? It all seemed to be painted with three main colors. Red, Gold and Green: the colors of which we recognize Christmas. RE D: S ac r if ice We see colors of red usually with poinsettias (the traditional flowers we use in decorations), the socks that we hung on our doors or simply with gift wrappers. But perhaps unknown to most of us, Red signifies the blood of our Christ. The sacrifice of that our Lord had been through to redeem us all for our sins. And throughout the years it also signifies the love that we uphold for the spirit of Christmas. GOLD : C har it y Gold, for charity or giving. It symbolizes the tradition of giving from the birth of Jesus as one of the wise men gave honor by giving gold as a present to the infant Christ. It signifies the spirit of giving, a tradition that we uphold right through the years. GRE E N : Hope It started on the tradition of giving evergreens as presents every Christmas season. People back then appreciated the withstanding quality of the said plant that for them signifies that after every winter, spring would come. And then on, as an annual custom, such adornments are hanged on each and every house. Knowing all these stories behind the colors around us in every Christmas, gives us a wider appreciation and understanding of what this season really is: SACRIFICES that Jesus Christ had gone through for the sake of GIVING us what we all need, HOPE.

Ashley Madison being a sinner The Judaist and Christian community stand firm – cheating on your partner is a form of sin. “Thou shalt not commit adultery” – this is the seventh commandment of God. “Thou shalt not covet (as to your neighbors’ wife)” – this is the tenth commandment of God. On one hand, the Christian family sees the sacrament of marriage as a sacred ritual of committing to the Lord the promise of faithfulness with the husband or wife for in the beginning God had created only man and woman. Art. 334. Concubinage. — Any husband who shall keep a mistress in the conjugal dwelling, or shall have sexual intercourse, under scandalous circumstances, with a woman who is not his wife, or shall cohabit with her in any other place, shall be punished by prision correccional in its minimum and medium periods. The concubine shall suffer the penalty of destierro. Destierro means banishment or only a prohibition from residing within the radius of 25 kilometers from the actual residence of the accused for a specified length of time. It is not imprisonment unlike prision correccional that is for a maximum of 6 years. It is also provided in Article 247 the following wherein slaughtering could be a more serious judgment for infidelity: “any legally married person who, having surprised his spouse in the act of committing sexual intercourse with another person, shall kill any of them or both of them in the act or immediately thereafter, or shall inflict upon them any serious physical injury, shall suffer the penalty of destierro” Ashley Madison is indeed a young and fresh avenue for the dating society. Nonetheless, cheating must not be promoted and tolerated in the Philippines – a country that values the morals.

Bursting out some light along the stretch were the Tarlac State University Lanterns handcrafted through creative minds. To give off hope and faith, different students from different cultures and minds came up with lanterns constructed by blood and of shed ideas. Made of bottles, husks, twigs, wrappers, and tin cans among others, these vastly occupying, tall standing and rotating lanterns left the spectators at awe. Showcasing rags-to-riches, organizations came up with thriving lanterns made up of recycled materials. . Scrap materials were gathered to be the main foundation of their artistries, euphemistically changing small-valued things, but then, symbolized all the group efforts, dramas, conflict and inspirations. The lanterns are now set to light up in the dark! From throw to worth. ‘Things that are worthless have big things that are yet to be seen. All of which are attached to them and it is up to us on how we are going to ignite a spark that would turn into a thriving flame.’ These thoughts came out from Gilbert G. Gonzales, President of the Student Society on Information Technology Education (SSITE). As four persons start again from scratch, an inspiration came up along the way. A motivation that sparked them boosted them to end up with a lantern that symbolizes their hopes. Two things motivated the team, to portray nationalism by the use of colors of blue, red and yellow; and to give off meaning – meaning

in the sense of making small things turn into big ones. With only less than a week to prepare, the organization successfully joined the roster of winners. The lantern was composed of bottles, balat ng mani, tansan, and straw. Crafted for the indigent The Christmas spirit needs to be felt and experienced by everyone especially the indigent ones, even if it is just a once a year event. A combination of cardboard, boxes, ipil-ipil, corn and coconut husks, comprises the lantern of Architecture 3A students led by Christian Aaron Bondoc. The group was composed of 9 members, through which, they conceptualized ideas and came up with the final notion, Paskong Pinoy and Konseptong Paglaya. The group showed off the real meaning of their lantern through their clothes and riding in a kariton during the parade. According to Bondoc, their parade was a fulfillment, not because of the clapping of students but because of the people who understood the meaning of their work and that they were able to relay the intended message regarding their lantern. A glittering innovation Spearheaded by their knowledge in electronics, funded literally by blood, as they get wounded by the glass edges, sweat and conflicts, the Institute of Electronics and Communications Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP) came up with a mechanical lantern with a rotating disc inside. From last year’s version which was manually

rotated, this year, these students showcased their engineerial skills as they portrayed an automatically rotating one. According to Liezel Ann A. Gaerlan, IECEP incoming president, they spent meticulously with their project. Their budget was to spend three thousand pesos to show off recycled materials to turn into a vast structure of lights. Comprising the lantern were green bottles, ipa, tin cans, foil, tansan and dayami, all which are collected from students. Unity despite of diversity In every group activity, different attitudes are at hand and there is always the possibility that we’ll encounter pessimists and optimists, random levels of understanding and interpretation regarding the ideas and outcome of the activity. The Educators of Technology and Livelihood Education (TETLE) came up with the concept mentioned above. Edrian Domingo, TETLE president, said that 85% of the materials that they used for their lantern are recycled ones namely plastic bottles, drinking straw, plastic bags, spoons, cups, bamboo, dayami, tansan, karton and palara. Also, according to Domingo, the star that is placed on their lantern represents Jesus, the main reason why we celebrate Christmas. Well motivated to instill their fighting spirit all throughout the contest but the happy and contented feeling is what they want to achieve whatever the result may be. Various appearances of lanterns lit up the road during the parade and each of them bears its concise meaning that indicates the masterpiece of each participant. Every group that participated in the parade showcased their creative side and gave out everything to make their masterpiece the best of best. Win or lose, everything is worth it because in every competition, it’s not about the prize but the bonding and teamwork that existed within the group during and after the competition. That is priceless. The Christmas spirit is just around the corner and here comes the colorful decorations that are hung in and out of our houses that signal the essence of this the season.

Furthermore, evolution theory has three principles namely “Microevolution”, “Natural Selection” and “Speciation”. Microevolution is the existence and expansion of mutations in the genetic sequence of an organism. radiation. On the other hand, the natural mechanism by which only the fittest species would survive in passing their genetic information is termed as the natural selection. Thus, those species who were less fit than other animals in the early years of evolution did not survive the challenge of time. Speciation, meanwhile, occurs when members of a particular specie could no longer mutate disenabling them to breed with other members of the same specie. Why Believe Evolution? The evolution theory, through its proponents, seeks to find out where humans really did come from. Thus, scientists, especially Darwin, tried to discover evidences which are trying to question the genuity of what the Bible says, and providing different point of view toward man’s beginning. First evidence are goose bumps. These are natural responses of the body when you are frightened, angry, cold or in awe. This also happens to animals as a response to fear, and to scare their enemy. Goose bumps have no more benefit for man because of natural selection. Natural selection caused the removal of thick hair of man, but it remained the mechanism for controlling it. Having goose bumps, indeed, is one of the evidences that evolution theory provides, proving that some man’s characteristics are also characteristics of animals. Apes are able to use their hands and feet beneficially. The reason why is that their feet have plantaris muscle which enables them to grip and manipulate things using their feet. This very muscle also exists in humans’ feet. However, due to evolution, this particular muscle has been underdeveloped to the extent that when doctors are in need of tissue for reconstruction in other parts of the human body, this muscle is usually taken out. In fact, 9% of humans are now born without plantaris muscle for it already becomes unnecessary to human body.

Another strong evidence is the coccyx. It is believed to be the remnant of what was once a human tail. mans. Our brain’s structure is one of the evidences. In fact, it contains over 100 billion cells, each with over 50,000 neuron connections to other brain cells. Furthermore, it receives over 100 million separate signals from the total human body every second. If we learn something new every second of our lives, it would take three million years to exhaust the capacity of the human brain. Besides, when we are awake, our brain produces enough electricity to power a small lightbulb. That is how astounding our brain is. Could somebody stand and say that human brain is a product of evolution? As we all know and as I repeatedly mentioning, creation is acclaimed by the Bible-the very God’s words. Now, can God tell a lie? Can He even fool people? Thus, God’s credibility is the primary evidence that we are all created by Him. Sabi nga nila, kilala ang mga Pilipino sa pagiging masayahin. Likas na din sa ating mga pinoy ang gumawa ng sandamukal na jokes. Mula sa mga walang kamatayan na “knock-knock jokes” hanggang sa mga korning banat natin, sadyang napakalupit talaga nating mga pinoy. Sa pang-araw-araw na buhay natin sa kolehiyo, nasubukan mo na bang mabiktima ng mga mapaglarong isipan ng kapwa mo estudyante? Yung tipong ginagawa nilang literal ang lahat na lang ng sinasabi mo kaya nagiging nakakatawa na lang ang statement o question mo. Na-experience mo na ba mabiktima ng mga literal na sagot ng mga kaklase mo? Kung hindi pa, basahin mo ng buo itong article na ito, dahil ito na ang magiging warning message mo. Narito ang mga example ng mga questions at statement na nagiging nakakatawa dahil sa literal na pagsagot ng mga makukulit na nilalang sa mundong ibabaw. Sa Restaurant… Boy: O ano ang kakainin natin? Girl: Ikaw… Boy: O edi Lamunin mo ako ng buong buo! Cannibal pala si ate. Madalas ganito ang ginagawa ng karamihan diba? Sila na nga ang pinagbigyan mo na magdesisyon, ang isasagot pa ay “Ikaw”. Ang galing lang talagang sumagot ng mga Pinoy sa mga simpleng tanong. Kung hindi magsisinungaling, sasagot naman ng malayo sa tanong. Isa pang example ng mga sagot ng pinoy na nakakairita: Tanong: Kumain ka na? Sagot: Busog pa ako. Ang sarap nilang punitin at pagpira-pirasuhin sabay sunugin sa nagbabagang apoy ng nasusunog na gulong. Sa bus… Tanong: San ‘to dadaan? Sagot: Sa kalsada. Tama nga naman, sa kalsada nga naman dadaan ang bus. Ano ba akala mo sa bus? Lumulutang? Pang himpapawid? Basahin naman kasi ang nakasulat sa bus kung san man dako ‘yan dadaan. Baka lang naman nakalagay sa

bus yung ruta na dadaanan nila. Tapos ikaw pa ang maaasar sa sinagot sayo ng pinagtanungan mo. Magpasensya ka na lang, sadyang matalinong sumagot ang kausap mo. Napaka eng-eng naman kasi ng tanong mo eh. Tanong: San ka kakain? Sagot: Sa bibig. Classic hindi ba? Lagi na lang tayong sinasagot ng mga kaklase natin ng mga ka-wirduhan na ganito. Minsan wala ka na lang magawa kundi matawa dahil ikaw pa yung nagmukang mali. Ganyan naman lagi eh, bully mga kaybigan mo eh. Sa bibig ka nga naman kasi lumalamon. Ayaw ba nila sa plato? Para sana hindi dugyot ne? Sa Jeep… Pasahero: Capas po ba ‘to? Sagot: Jeep po ito… Ang sarap siguro dagukan yung taong sasagot sayo nito hindi ba? Pero teka muna, tama naman ang sagot niya eh, kahit anong gawin mo, may point siya. Jeep naman talaga yun eh. Ayusin mo mga tanong mo. Sentence construction lang hindi mo pa magawa ng tama, tagalog pa yan. Kung tinamaan ka, josko, ayusin mo buhay mo. Tanong: C.R. tayo. Sagot: Hindi… tao tayo. Grabe, ang sarap ihian yung sasagot sayo ng ganito. Yung tipong ihing-ihi ka na, tapos ang isasagot ganyan. Tama naman ‘diba? Hindi naman kasi kayo C.R.! Tao kayo! TAO! (Hindi ako galit). Kung akala mo sa sarili mo ay isang C.R., wag ka na mandamay, sarilihin mo na lang iyan. Hindi kasi maalis sa ugali nating mga pinoy yung nagkakayayaan sa C.R. eh. Ano ba kasi yan? Joined force sa pag-ihi para mas conserved ang energy? Sa bus stop… Tanong: Ordinary ba yan? Sagot: Bakit? may extraordinary bang bus? Uso talaga sa siesta o kahit saang bus stop na nagkakahintayan ng bus na may “Ordinary Fare”. Tila binabalewala nating mga estudyante ang mga “Airconditioned” bus sa tuwing nagsisiksikan tayo sa masikip na bus. Nakakatawa lang pakinggan yung mga taong pasilip-silip sa mga dumarating na bus sa terminal. Pata-

nong-tanong pa sila kung “ordinary” ba ang dumarating na bus. Bakit? May bus bang extraordinary? May superpowers na pala ang mga bus ngayon. Driver: SM oh! Bente lang. Pasahero: Wow, bili nga ako ng SM. Sa tuwing umuuwi ka galing sa TSU, naka-abang na sa iyo ang mga tricycle drivers na mala-zombie apocalypse ang dating sa tuwing hinaharang ka nila para alukin ng sakay papunta sa SM. Ano ba akala nila sa atin? Tambay sa SM? Ang masakit pa, kung hindi ka nila aalukin ng bente pesos na tricycle, aalukin ka nila ng bente pesos na SM. Napaka-lupit talaga ng mga drivers, SM na nga ang binebenta, 99.9% off pa. After ng checking ng exam… Boy: Ilan ka? Girl: Isa lang ako Ganito tayo lagi kapag natapos na ang checking ng exam. Hindi natin mapigilan ang sarili nating mag-kumparahan ng mga scores na nakuha natin pag exam. Kaso madalas na lang na mali ang mga tanong natin. Tanungin mo ba naman siya kung “ilan siya”, kahit ako ikakagulat ko iyan. Bakit? May nakikita ka bang kamuka niya na hindi namin nakikita? Tanong: May CR kayo? Sagot: Wala kaming CR, sa labas kami umiihi. Hindi talaga maiiwasan na sa tuwing may handaan sa tahanan ninyo, may mga taong naghahanap ng Comfort Room. Yung iba, sa sulok na lang umiihi, minsan pati pag-dumi sa sulok na lang din ginagawa. Pero madalas nakakabastos na lang din sa tuwing mali ang tanong sa iyo ng mga naghahanap ng C.R. ninyo. “May C.R. kayo?” Ano ba akala

nila sa inyo? Caveman? Akala ata nila sa lupa lang kayo umiihi at dumudumi eh. O baka naman nawawala ang C.R. ninyo? O ano? May mga kilala ka bang ganyan sumagot? O naka-relate ka? Siguro nga likas na sa mga Pilipino ang pagiging masayahin. Dahilan na din ito ng patuloy na lumalaking populasyon ng mga pilosopong nag-eexist sa ating bayan. Sadyang napakagaling lamang nating maghanap ng nakakatawang bagay sa mga simpleng salita na nasasambit ng bawat isa sa atin. Matalino nga ang mga pinoy eh. Alam natin ang mali sa Grammar ng mga kapwa natin, kaso nagkataon lang na pilosopo din tayo kaya kakaiba ang lumalabas na ending. So conclusion? Mga GENIUS PHILOSOPHER tayong mga pinoy! Ikaw na bahala kung positive o negative ba itong epekto nito sa buhay mo. Pero tandaan na pinapakita lamang nito na kahit na nasa bingit na ng kahirapan ang iba sa atin, nagagawan pa din nating mga Pilipino na humanap ng paraan upang makalimot sa problema at magpakasaya upang maipakita na malakas tayo sa harap ng mga problemang lumalamon sa atin.

A review on the whimsical Stupid is Forever Oliver John S. Tabaquero

Ignorance can be cured but stupidity is eternal. Yes. Stupid is Forever. Miriam the senator is widely known for being a crusader against corruption. She is very famous among young and adult alike. In this latest book of her, Senator Miriam proved that despite of Lung Cancer’s attacks, she never lost her sense of humor as she exhibit her brilliance and wit using pick-up lines, one-liners, jokes and comebacks. Some of her speeches from different events were also chipped in. It might be unusual for someone like her to be kidding around despite of our nation’s condition. Everyone is puzzled on why she does it. But, the conclusion is so simple: the senator saw humor as a very effective way of communicating and as a result, she utilized her wit to lighten on what seems to be heavy in thought. The first part, Wicked, contains liners that spits on the faces of the corrupt and selfish politicians. Examples of this are: “You’re the reason God created the middle finger.” And “Most people live and learn. Politicians just live.” This part is a burst of painful statements told in a language that is youthful and contemporary. Next part is Asukal ka, Ako ay Sago. This part is stuffed with pick-up lines. The downside is,

some of the jokes are very much on the mainstream. Like this: “Kapag namatay ako, huwag kang pupunta sa libingan ko, baka tumibok ulit ang puso ko.” Quite sure, everyone has already read this from the internet or heard from a friend. The only thing exciting about it is when Senator Miriam delivers it. It becomes catchy because of her personality. Third part of the book is called Death threats for Breakfast! Here, there are more of the senator’s brave comebacks and witty liners. One line, where it was all about the best way to fight graft, says: “Head-bashing is the best strategy. Sometimes I have to splatter their brains on the pavement.” Mixed in with the different parts are the speeches. On one of the speeches, entitled Student Leadership, she pointed out that we should vote wisely in the 2016 elections. She also elaborated on the development of student leadership. Lessons and points to ponder are very much abundant on her speeches. Out – of – the notebook experience was the fourth part. This part is more of Senator Miriam’s random thoughts and jokes. This part is very much light and entertaining. It is more evident in this part that the senator enjoys little

random stuff that she finds funny. Like this one: “These days, a student isn’t lazy; he’s energetically declined.” Relationship and marriage are the topic in the fifth part which is entitled The Worst Thing About Being Married. Here’s one line: “I think divorce should be available to people who become homicidal at the sight of each other.” In this part, she softly tackled the problems and discrepancies of a married life. She, Miriam herself, is the focus of Miriam on Miriam, the sixth part. It’s more of comic and witty liners all about her beauty and intelligence, written and stated in a light way. Aside from the notes, speeches and one-liners, the illustrations were very good. No doubt about it, for they were born from the creative hands of some of the Philippines’ best illustrators including Manix Abrera, a famous cartoonist from The Philippine Daily Inquirer and the creator of Kikomachine Komix. Overall, Senator Miriam was able to tap on sarcasm and the funny side of things. She pointed out notable insights regarding marriage, society and of course, corrupt politicians - all written in a witty and intelligent way that tickle and punch at the same time.

Isa ka ba sa mga batang nagpapapaniwala sa mga nakaka-kilig na happy ending ng mga fairy tales na kinukuwento ng mga magulang mo noong musmos ka pa? Mga kwentong nag-iiwan ng mga kakaibang moral lesson na siya na ding humuhulma sa pagkatao mo hanggang sa tumanda ka. Siguro ay madami lang talaga tayong mga mapagpaniwala na bilib na bilib sa mala-epic na happy ending na meron ang mga istoryang ito. Mga istoryang lalo pang pinaganda ng mga movie makers katulad ng sikat na sikat na Disney at kung ano pa mang mga producers na nag-eexist kung san man sa mundo. Mga aral na nagbigay sa atin ng inspirasyon na meron talagang “forever” sa buhay ng isang tao. Pero teka lang! Paano kung sabihin ko sa iyo na mali ang mga istoryang kinalakihan mo at naging inspirasyon mo sa buhay mo? Totoo. Hindi lahat ng mga fairy tales na kinagisnan mo ay tama. Sa patuloy na pagpasa-pasa sa iba’t ibang dila ng mga nakaraang henerasyon, nagkaroon na ng modipikasyon sa mga ito upang mapagtakpan ang mga nakakasindak na pangyayari sa mga iba’t ibang kuwento ng fairy tales. Nang magkasiraan na ng childhood! THE LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD Sino nga ba naman ang makakalimot sa cute na cute na istorya ni Little Red Riding Hood? Maliban sa katanungan na bakit nga ba nilagyan ng “riding” ang pangalan niya kung wala naman siyang sinasakyan, kilala natin ang kuwentong ito dahil sa nakakatawang ka-inosentihan ng bida dahil sa panloloko sa kanya ng Big Bad Wolf. Ngunit sa katotohanan, ang orihinal na istorya nito ay nagsimula sa isang kuwento na gawa ni Charles Perrault, na may banghay na hindi ganoon kaganda. Isa itong kuwento patungkol sa isang batang babae na paulit-ulit na binigyan ng maling direksyon ng isang asong lobo sa pagpunta niya sa tahanan ng kaniyang lola. Seryoso, sino ba namang ewan ang magtatanong sa isang asong lobo? Naging katapusan ng kuwento ay ang marahas ka kamatayan ng batang bida sa kamay ng asong lobo

THE LITTLE MERMAID Isang napakagandang buod ang ginawa ng Disney sa istorya ng sikat na kuwentong Little Mermaid, ngunit tulad ng naunang kuwento, hindi ganoon kaganda ang katapusan ng orihinal na istorya nito. Ang unang bersyon nito ay isinulat ni Hans Christian Andersen. Sa istorya nito paulit-ulit na nagsakripisyo ng kanyang pagkatao ang sirena upang mahalin siya ng prinsipe ngunit sa huli, nakita ng kaawa-awang sirena ang prinsipe na kinakasal sa isang prinsesang kinagagalitan niya. Sa galit ng sirena, sinubukan niyang saksakin ng patalim ang prinsipe, ngunit pinili na lamang niya na magpakamatay sa karagatan. Naging isa siyang bula na sumabay sa hagod ng hangin sa katapusan ng kuwento. SNOW WHITE Pamilyar tayo sa kuwento ni Snow White na muli ay pinasikat ng walang pagod na Disney. Sa kuwento ng Disney, inutusan ng reyna ang isang mangangaso upang patayin si Snow White at ibalik ang puso niya bilang pruweba. Ngunit hindi kinaya ng kunsensiya ng mangangaso ang iniutos sa kanya kaya bumalik siya sa reyna dala ang isang puso ng baboy ramo.

Pero ang orihinal na kuwento ng istoryang ito ay malayo sa kinalakihan natin. Ang pinapadala ng reyna ay ang atay at baga ni Snow White upang maging hapunan niya sa gabing iyon. Ayon din sa orihinal na istorya, nagising si Snow White mula sa kamatayan noong nailabas niya ang nakakalasong piraso ng mansanas mula sa kanyang bibig dahil sa pag-kalog ng sinasakyang kabayo ng prinsipe habang bumabalik sila sa kastilyo – hindi sa mahiwagang halik. Kung ano man ang balak ng prinsipe sa nasabing patay na katawan ni Snow White, kayo na ang bahalang humusga. SLEEPING BEAUTY Mula sa kuwento na pinalabas ng Disney sa pelikula, isang napakagandang prinsesa ang natusok sa isang Spindle na naging dahilan ng pagkatulog niya ng isang daang taon hanggang sa dumating ang prinsipe upang halikan siya at gisingin mula sa matagal na pagkakatulog. Bukod sa nasa isip ninyo na mas nakakalason pa ang panis na laway ni Sleeping Beauty na natikman ng prinsipe, malaki ang kaibahan ng istorya nito mula sa orihinal na pinanggalingan nito. Ayon sa orihinal na istorya nito, hindi ang mahi-

wagang halik ang gumising sa natutulog na prinsesa. Paulit-ulit na pinagsamantalahan ng hari ang walang labang katawan ng prinsesa na nagbunga ng kambal na bata. Oo, nanganak ang prinsesa habang natutulog siya. Isa sa kanyang mga anak ang sumipsip sa sumpa sa kanyang daliri na nagresulta ng pagkagising ng natutulog na prinsesa. Nagising na lamang siya na walang kamalay malay na napagsamantalahan siya at nanganak ng dalawang bata. CINDERELLA Ayon sa makabagong kuwento ng Cinderella, nagkatuluyan ang prinsipe at si Cinderella kasabay ng pagpapakasal ng dalawa pa niyang step sisters sa dalawang mataas na opisyal. Isang “Happily ever after” na ending ang sinapit ng lahat sa kuwento. Ngunit siyempre, mula sa orihinal na pinanggalingan ng kuwento, ang pangalan ng bida sa kuwento ay hindi naman talaga Cinderella, kundi Rhodopis. Sa kuwento, dahil sa kasakiman at inggit ng dalawang step-sister ng bida, pinilit nilang masuot ang salamin na sapatos sa pamamagitan ng pagputol ng ilang parte ng kanilang mga paa upang makumbinsi ang prinsipe. Ikinagulat ng prinsipe ang biglang pagtuka ng mga kalapati sa mata ng dalawang magkapatid na nagresulta ng pagkabulag ng dalawa. Naging bulag na pulubi ang magkapatid habang nagpapakasasa sa yaman si Cinderella sa kastilyo ng prinsipe. Siguro naman napansin mo na kung bakit ginawang happy ending ang mga istoryang ito para sa makabagong henerasyon. Sa brutal at tindi ng gore factor ng mga istorya, maaaring hindi maganda ang maging resulta kung ituturo natin ang mga aral na dala nito sa mga bata. Marahil na nasa isip ng mga tao sa panahon na iyon na mas madaling ituro sa mga bata ang isang aral kung hahaluan ito ng takot. Ngunit siyempre, hindi maganda ang epekto nito sa psychological na paraan. Ito na din marahil ang intension ng mga nag-revise ng mga kuwentong kinalakihan natin. Ngunit kung iisipin natin, sa mga orihinal na istorya na ‘to, isang napakalaking aral ang naiiwan sa atin, na ang buhay ay hindi laging happy ending tulad ng mga istoryang pinaparinig sa atin ng mga magulang natin bago tayo matulog sa madilim na gabi.

Reliving the past through old traditions and beliefs Pauline G. Gaña Even before the arrival of colonizers, our country already established the fundamentals of a society. We have our own beliefs, market system, languages, letters, government, and our own territory for us to flourish further. In short, we did not need the colonization for us to be able to call ourselves a complete civilization. Sadly, because of the entry of foreign cultures and beliefs, we have undergone through acculturation which lead to the demise of our own. Baybayin [Alibata] Baybayin or more commonly known as Alibata is the indigenous pre-Filipino writing system of Filipinos. Unlike to the international letter system composed of 26 letters, Baybayin only has 18 characters. According to experts, Alibata is the wrong term for the system of writing. The term Alibata was coined by Paul Rodríguez Verzosa, after the arrangement of letters of the Arabic alphabet alif, ba, ta (alibata). Thus, the more formal term is ‘Baybayin’. From the tagalog term ‘baybay,’ it

literally means ‘to spell.’ It has been widely used in the Philippines until the Spanish colonizers changed the Alibata into the Latin alphabets in the 19th century. Baybayin could have been the cultural identity that would separate the Philippines from other countries. Animism Even before the colonizers have introduced Allah, Moses, Jesus and other form of heavenly figures, natives have already shown their devotion through Animism or worshipping the spirits. They believe that everything on Earth have heavenly gods that watches over them. They perform rituals for good harvest or for luck to be bestowed upon them. They also conduct rites aimed at pacifying malevolent spirits. They even sometimes worship rocks and other inanimate objects. But as foreigners set foot on our lands, they have introduced their religions as well. Nowadays, many of us have been considering Animism as a form of joke, not to be serious about. Meanwhile, we can see traces of Animism through the belief of pamahiin. Batek A form of art, self expression, or a commercial product. That is how we see tattoos nowadays. But back in the days, tattoos mean more than what meets the eye. In the early 16th century, traditional tattooing is widespread in the Philippines. No longer practiced, the Batek of the Ilubo Kalinga is a visually powerful rendering of symmetry and unity of de-

signs which signifies beauty and bravery. For men, the more tattoos engraved on their body, the braver or greater they are. For each symbol or mark on their skins signifies the number of enemies that have fallen on their hands. Furthermore, tattoos signify the beauty a woman possesses in those days. The more tattoo you have, the more beautiful you are in the eyes of others. Most of us now put on our tattoos to be cool or to show rebellion. While some of us think that tattoos are for criminals and they just make our skin filthy. What tattoos used to signify can only be seen in books or documentaries. Very few are still living with their hard earned insignias. Many of them have perished along with the memories of their courage. From the language and letters that we use to the sound of music that we sing, we cannot deny the fact that our own culture is already a mix and match of other lands cultures. In some points, it is a good thing for it shows how capable Filipinos are in adapting to new cultures. However, in this process, we have adopted more than what we should have. We started embracing foreign cultures and in the process lead to the demise of our traditional cultures. We are now reacting based on what is on trend on other lands. Lahat ng ito ay itinakda ng ating saligang batas subalit aware ka ba na meron ka dapat ng mga ito? Kasabay sa buwan ng pagdiriwang ng panahon ng kapaskuhan, ito rin ang panahon kung saan inaalala ang mga naging biktima ng paglabag sa karapatang pantao. Marami sa atin ang nagtatanong kung bakit napakarami ng nagrarally sa daan. Maya’t maya ay nasa kalye sila at sumisigaw ng kung anu-anong hinaing. Kesyo sana ay nagtrabaho na lang sila. O kaya naman ay sana ginagamit na lang sana nila ang mga oras sa pag-ra-rally para gumawa ng makabuluhang bagay. Minsan pa nga ay sinasabihan natin sila na sila ay binayaran ng kung sino mang pulitiko para siraan ang kalaban nito. May ilan sigurong grupo na ganito ang modus, subalit, sa mga grupo na handang gumugol ng oras at buhay para lamang ipahatid at ipaglaban ang karapatan ng bawat isa, masasabi nating sa isang banda ay dakila sila. Simple lang naman kasi ang pinaglalaban nila, ang magkaroon tayo ng nararapat sa atin. patuloy na paglabag sa mga karapatang ito. Hindi na dapat ipinaglalalaban ang karapatan dahil natural na dapat tayong meron ng mga ito. Nakasaad rin sa saligang batas ang mga karapatan nating dapat ay meron tayo. Pero dahil na rin siguro sa kagahamanan ng mga landlords, mga kapitalista at ng ilang mga nasa katungkulan, dahan dahan tayong kinakatasan at unti unting pinagkakait sa atin ang ating mga karapatan. Kaya hindi mo rin masisisi ang mga grupong patuloy sa pakikibaka dahil hindi lamang pansariling interes ang ipinaglalaban nila kundi maging ng interes ng bawat Pilipinong inagawan ng karapatan. Napakarami ng dugo ang dumanak dahil sa pakikipaglaban sa karapatan. Marami na ring buhay ang ikinulong sa piitan upang hindi na makapagsalita. Higit sa lahat, maraming Pilipino ang tinatanggalan ng karapatan ang walang kaalam-alam. Wag lang sana tayong makuntento sa kung anong sinasabi sa atin. Magtanong tayo paminsan minsan. Baka kasi magising na lang tayo isang araw na hindi na tayo makilos dahil nakakadena na tayo sa rehas ng pagmamanipula, sunod sa gusto ng kung sino man at tuluyan ng tinanggalan ng karapatan. Ang human rights day ay hindi lamang para sa mga aktibistang pinatay, tinortyur at ikinulong. Ito ay para sa lahat ng biktima ng paglabag sa karapatang pantao at higit sa lahat, ito ay para sa’yo.

Ang mailap na kampeonato sa TSU Isa na namang pagkakataon para sa mga atleta nating TSUian ang magpakitang gilas sa State Universities and Colleges III Olympics na idinaos sa kalapit eskwelahan na Tarlac College of Agriculture (TCA). Mahirap patumbahin ang 13 eskwelahan na kabilang sa nasabing palaro. Iba’t-iba ang uri ng laro galing sa iba-ibang probinsiya. Sa loob ng pitong araw ay magtatagisan ng galing ang mga atleta sa iba’t-ibang disiplina ng palakasan. Mayroong 79 na medalyang na-iuwi ang ating mga atleta pero hindi sapat ang

paghukay natin patungo sa ginto. Madalas sa ikatlong pwesto lumulugar ang ating mga pambato. Pero hindi sapat ang mga tansong medalya dahil sa huli mas matimbang pa rin ang mga ginto. Bumaba tayo ng isang baitang mula sa pagkakapwesto natin sa ika-anim na pwesto noong nakaraang taon papunta sa ika-pito ngayong taon na ito. Ang ating unibersidad ay may sapat na kamandag para maipanalo ang bawat laban pero para lamang tayong mga play-off contender na team. ‘Yun bang tipong elimina-

tion games pa lamang ay inaabangan ka na para lumaban sa semi-finals. Isa na diyan ang ating koponan sa volleyball men na nabigong makasungkit ng tanso laban sa TCA. Isama pa ang pareho nating koponan sa basketbol na isang laro na lang ang kulang ay abot kamay na nila ang ginto laban sa Bulacan State University. Siguro darating ang isang taon na mauubusan na ng mga atletang magagaling ang ating unibersidad. Parang sige sila ng sige habang andiyan pa sila, pero hindi natin namamalayan na mauubusan din tayo ng gas. Ang gas ay ang mga atleta na nagsisilbing lakas ng ating unibersidad. Lakas sa larangan ng palakasan, lakas na maipagmamalaki sa buong bayan. Kung ngayon pa lang ay nauubusan na tayo ng gas, ano na ang gagamitin natin para sa mga susunod na taon? Saan na lamang tayo pupwesto kung ang all-out ng ating mga atleta ay naglalaro lamang sa gitna ng mga 13 unibersidad sa buong rehiyon? Meron pa bang kamandag na matitira na kayang magpatumba ng iba pang mga koponan? Kung ngayon pa lang ay nauubusan ka na ng pag-asa, hindi ka tunay na atleta. Kung baga sa isang sasakyan maihahabing ang ating mga atleta. Naluluma, umaalis, napapalitan, gumaganda ulit. Siguro sa simpleng proseso ng pag-refill ng ating mga atleta ay makakamit ang mailap na kampeonato katulad ng finish line na unang naabot ng sasakyan na may malakas na makina (suporta) at gasolina (atleta).

EYES ON THE TARGET:

Noong bata ako, fan ako ng palabas na Slamdunk. ‘Yun yung uso bago yung Kuroko’s Basket. Bukod kasi sa pagiging fan ng larong basketbol, natatawa din ako ako kay Hanamichi Sakuragi n’on dahil sa mga kabulastugan, kalokohan at kayabangan pinapakita niya. Pero nagpapasalamat ako dahi hindi ako lumaking basag-ulo katulad niya. Isa pang napansin ko sa palabas ang madalas kulitin ni Sakuragi. Bukod kay Gori, Rukawa at iba pang miyembro ng Shohoku, hilig din niyang kulitin ang kanilang coach na si Coach Ansai. Madalas niyang hawakan ang second chin nito at tapik tapikin para tumalbog. ‘Tatang’ pa nga ang tawag nito sa kanya. Madalas kapag ayaw ni Gori na paglaruin si Sakuragi, kay Coach Ansai tumatakbo ang ating bida. Dahil mahilig akong mag-isip ng kung anu-ano noon, tinanong ko rin sa sarili ko kung ano nga ba ang trabaho ng isang coach. Pero dahil hindi ko kayang sagutin, tinanong ko mas nakatatanda sa akin. “Apin ila ding magdrawing pleys ampo ila rin ing mag-guide kareng players” (Sila ang mga gumagawa ng plays at sila ang gumabay sa mga players.) ‘Yan ang sagot sa akin. Pero dahil makulit ako, hindi ako nakuntento sa sagot. Pilit pa rin akong nagtanong. Lumaki ako at natutunan ko na rin ang trabaho ng mga coaches. Kapag nanunod ako ng laro sa barangay okaya sa TV, bukod sa mga players, minsan pinagmamasdan ko din ang mga coaches. Madalas na nakatayo at hindi sila mapakali. Kulang na lang sila pa ang maglaro. Pero huwag na tayong pumunta sa barangay namin. Dito na lang tayo sa malapit. December 15 hanggang December 20 nanatili ako sa kampus ng Tarlac College of Agriculture para magcover sa idinaos sa State Universities and Colleges Olympics sa Region 3. Linilibot ko ang mga laro. Tinamaan narin ako ng bola minsan at napuno ng putik ang tsinelas ko. Peste, tatatanga ang bola. Sa pagcocover ko ng mga laro, pinagmamasdan ko ang diskarte ng mga koponan. Paano ba sila makakabawi kapag tambak ang lamang? Paano sila nagaadjust? Okaya naman kapag sila ang lamang, paano nila ito palalakihin pa upang hindi na makahabol ang kalaban? Siyempre dahil koponan sila, hindi lang iisa ang posibleng dahilan. Madalas, nasa manlalaro daw. Oo, tama naman ‘yun. Pero dahil trip ko na sumalungat kapag minsan, iniisip ko na ang posibleng dahilan ay ‘yung taong hindi mapakali. Hindi naman siya natatae(pero posible) subalit walang tigil na para bang hindi maaawat hangga’t hindi tapos ang laro. Tama naman siguro ‘yung sagot sa akin nung bata ako. Tama din ang nakikita ko sa mga laro sa TV. Coaches ang mga gumagawa ng play. Pero sa tingin ko, meron pa silang mas malalim na trabaho. “Oh nanu? Angga tanamu kene?” (Oh ano? Hanggang dito na lang ba tayo?). ‘Yan ang sinabi ng isang coach ng TSU habang nanonood ako ng laro. Pagkatapos niyang sinabi ‘yon ay naging ganado ang players niya. Una sa mga tabaho ng coach ay panatilihin ang self-esteem at confidence

ng mga players niya. Kapag natatambakan at naiiwanan na ng ibang team, paano nga ba makakabawi? Nakita ko sa mga coaches natin ang pagbibigay ng mga kumpiyansa sa pambato natin sa tuwing nado-down sila at naiiwanan. Ginawa nila ang lahat ng makakaya nila upang iboost ang morale ng mga atleta natin. Hindi sila nagpakita ng panlulumo bagkus, pinilit upang maging matatag upang ganahan ang atleta na makahabol at manalo. Kung babalik tayo sa Slamdunk, sinabi ni Coach Ansai na secret weapon si Sakuragi ng Shohoku. Dahil diyan, kahit na puro drills lang ang pinapagawa sa kanya ay lalo siyang naging ganado. Pangalawa, ang i-manage ang ego ng mga manlalaro. Sa isang team, hindi maiiwasan na merong mabait, masunurin at masarap ibaon sa lupa. Naaalala mo ba noong buo ang big three ng Boston Celtics noong 2007? Eh noong magkakasama pa sina Lebron James, Dwayne Wade at Chris Bosh sa Miami? Naging epektibong coach pareho si Doc Rivers at Erik Spoelstra hindi lang dahil madaming star players sa kanilang koponan kundi nagawa nilang ihandle ang ego ng mga ito. Kita naman hindi ba? Oo, hindi nila naipanalo lahat pero kita naman na kahit pinag sama-sama ang mga magagaling na manlalaro sa iba’t ibang kolehiyo ay nagawa nilang pagsama samahing ang laro ng bawat isa. Pangatlo, bukod sa ego ay ang samu’t saring talento. Kinuha ang pinaka magaling sa bawat kolehiyo. Oo, walang duda na magagaling silang lahat pero hindi ibig sabihin noon ay sigurado na ang kampeonato. Natatandaan mo pa ba ang star-studded na Lakers kung saan kasama si Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash at Pau Gasol? Nahirapan nga silang makapasok ng playoffs tapos laglag din matapos makalaban ang solid sa Spurs. Kitams? Sa SCUAA, hindi nila naipanalo lahat pero kita nakita ko naman na nagawa ng mga coaches natin na ihandle ang mga talent ng mga atleta natin. Madali lang pagsama-samahin ang mga magagaling na manlalaro pero ang maglaro sila bilang isang magaling na koponan? Ibang bagay na ‘yun. Bukod sa mga nabanggit, marami pa siguro ang ginagawa ang coaches natin. Hindi man nila naipanalo lahat ang laban, sa tingin ko ay nagampanan nila ng maayos ang trabaho nila. Kapag walang nagcocoach ang isang team, madalas ay wala itong direksyon. At ganoon din kapag wala ang isa. Teamwork nga kumbaga. Nakakatuwa nga na malapit ang coaches sa mga players natin na nagagawa nilang makipagbiruan. Nagpapatunay lamang ito na kapag solid ang chemistry ng manlalaro at coach, epektibo ang mga manlalaro. AIMING THE OUTLINE OF ARCHERY

Katniss did it. Cupid also. Don’t forget Legolas and Hawkeye. For DoTA fanatics, Clinx and the Drow Ranger. Aside for shooting alongside the Radiant or the Avengers, having archery skills is very useful. HOW IT ALL BEGAN Before, it was all for hunting. But now, it is a sport that is both exciting and thrilling. It became a part of sports tournaments, be it Olympics or the World Cup. Just like the other sports, Archery has a very superb history. It all began in 2800 BC where the Egyptians produced the first composite bow. Because of that, the Egyptians were the first known people to develop archery skill that they used in combat and hunting. The civilizations that was introduced to us in our history subject such as the Assyrians, Persians, Armenians and others had a significant number of archers in their army. By the time of the Shang Dynasty in China, their chariots had archers for war. It was 1844 when the first Grand National Archery Society meeting was held in York, England. After a decade, rules were regulated and they were known as the York Round. It’s a series of shoots at 60, 80 and 100

yards. A man named Horace Ford contributed in the improvement of archery standards as he introduced techniques. Horace won the Grand National 11 consecutive times and it introduced a very influential guide in the sport of Archery in 1856. THE COMPETITIONS The most popular form is known as Target Archery. This competition can be held indoor or outdoor. If it’s held indoor, distances are most likely to be 18 meters and 25 meters. If it’s outdoor, distances are ranging from 30 meters to 90 meters. There is time limit in which Archers have to shoot their arrows. Another form is called the Field Archery. It is where archers need to shoot targets of varying distances. Usually, it is held in rough terrain. The main goal of this competition is mainly the improvement of hunting using a bow. It’s more realistic because of the outdoor setting. However, it does not introduce the complication and the estimation of unknown distances. BOW, ARROWS AND FRIENDS The sport archery utilizes different equipments. First is the bow, which has three classifications. The Recurve that is used in Olympics, the Compound that has cables and pulleys and the Barebow that is similar to the Recurve with the exception of the accessories. Also, the string of the bow is made of high-tech polyethylene fibers which are known to be stronger than steel.

Next are the arrows. Arrows have a maximum diameter of 9.3 millimeters. Some are small as 5.5 millimeters for faster flight and to lessen the wind drift. Commonly, arrows consist of a shaft and an arrowhead attached to the front end. Fletchings, which helps in the stabilization of arrows, and a nock that keeps the arrow in place on the string when the bow is drawn, can be seen on the rear end. The container used for the arrows is called a Quiver. The safety equipments for the Archer are namely the Armguard, Chestguard and the Shooting glove. Most of the time, they are made of leather. The arm guard protects the arm from being whacked by the bowstring. The chestguard’s main function is to keep the clothing out of the way and to cover the body from the release of the bowstring. The Shooting glove is worn to protect the finger when the arrow is released. Other accessories include the bowsight and the stabilizer. The bowsight is mounted in the bow and it helps the archer to aim. The stabilizer is for maintaining stability of the bow during and after and arrow is fired. Lastly, the target. It is 48 inches in diameter. Its center is 1.3 meters elevated from the ground. The center ring is 12.2 centimeters. Also, there is a smaller ring which is 2.4 in diameter and its purpose is being the tie breaker when archers qualify for world records. HOW DO YOU WIN IN ARCHERY?

It’s simply where on the target the arrow landed. In archery, hitting the central ring known as the Gold can give you the most points that can be accumulated in one shot. When competing, an individual with the highest total points is declared as the winner. FILIPINO ARCHERS In the Youth Olympic Games held in Nanjing, China this year, a young archer that goes by the name of Gabriel Luis Moreno bagged the gold for the Philippines. He was teamed up with China’s Li Jiaman. Moreno rank 30th among 32 male archers while Li rank 3rd in the women’s. Moreno’s gold medal was the first for the Philippines in the Youth Olympics for athletes aged 14 to 18. Another notable Archer is Mark Javier from Dumaguete, Philippines. He competed in the Archery way back in the 2006 Asian Games held in Doha, Qatar. He settled for 9th place in the individual category. Archery is a game slowly getting distinguished in our country. We all know that our athletes are very competitive when it comes to sports. With the right push and support, maybe one day Philippines will also be known for their archers.

An epic seven game series was enjoyed by fans all over our basketball loving archipelago as the well-rested San Miguel Beermen faced off with the dogtired Alaska Aces for the PBA 2015 All-Filipino Cup. As game one was underway the Aces were drunk by the Beermen’s offense as they were down 27-5 in the first quarter. The Beermen continued their reign in the hard court as they still find themselves in the driver seat at the end of the first half, 31-20. The Aces began knocking the door of the Beermen as they brought down the deficit to five, 54-49, at the end of the third quarter. The end of regulation is not enough for these two giants as the game ended up going to extended period, 74 all at the end of regulation. With the hustle points delivered by Calvin Abueva via double-double of 22 points and ten rebounds the Aces pull out a victory in OT 88-82. The second game kicked off in a high note as both teams become steaming off the shootout 32-28, SMB in charge. The shootout continues in the remainder of the first half as SMB still in control, 51-48. The Beermen where then unstoppable until the

end as Arwind Santos, June Mar Fajardo, and Chris Lutz were just scoring chipping in 57 points out of Beermen’s 100-86 victory and transforms the series in a virtual best of five. The third game was a tight one in the first quarter as defense was the name of the game ending it in a slow fashion, 13-8, Aces. The Beermen made a huge outburst in the second quarter gaining the lead coming to the second half, 35-27. The Beermen struck fast and hard in the third quarter as they outscored the Aces and the game quickly transitioned in a blow-out, 64-46. It’s déjà vu for the Beermen as the Aces surged yet another comeback with the heroics of Calvin Aboueva for yet again earning a double-double 16 points and 15 rebounds, 78-70, Aces takes the lead in the series. Beermen were in a hot start as game four commenced they outscored the Aces in the first quarter, 33-16. Dominating the game were the Beermen as they find themselves yet again in the driver seat as the second half starts, 49-26. Comeback potential became blurry for the Aces as they find themselves still down in the third quarter, 73-49. It then

became a statement game for the Beermen as they sealed the Aces’ spirit for a comeback with a one-sided 88-70 victory tying the series 2-2. Game five copied the trend from game three’s tight contest in the first quarter Aces up, 23-21. The trend went on the second quarter 41 all. It was a tough contest until the third quarter 71 all. But Beermen’s Fajardo and Santos delivered in the fourth quarter resulting in a nail-biter 9388. The Beermen will try to shut down the hopes of the Aces as they try to end the series in game six with them having the series advantage 3-2. The Beermen sent a

strong message of “you gotta earn it” in the first quarter finishing it out strong, 23-17. The Aces responded as they were hanging on for a game seven 42-16, Aces. The Aces held on and were successful until the end as every player chipped in but Hontiveros standing out with three big treys to seal it to a game seven, 87-76. It all went down in a decisive game seven as both teams looking sharper than ever. Starting off in the first quarter is the usual run of the Beermen as they dominated the Aces, 21-12. The Aces kept their hopes high to still bag the title but the Beermen built a lead that the Aces cannot even see the title going into their

hands, 48-27. It would be inappropriate if the Aces never have a comeback in times like this. They outscored the Beermen 32-14 in the third quarter thus leaving the game in the balance coming in to the final quarter, 62-59, Beermen still in the lead. The dagger three of Arwind Santos was the nail in the coffin of the comeback hopes for the Aces and game seven ended in yet another nail-biter, 80-78. Arwind Santos named as the Finals MVP. TSU Firefox’s boxing pride Bryan Paul Quitalag’s rigorous training paid off as he was able to devastate Central Luzon State University (CLSU) Green Cobras’ bet Robert Miranda and bring home the gold medal in the flyweight division in a bout that took place in the Camiling Sports Complex, 19th of December. The fight turned out to be lopsided in favour of Quitalag. As soon as the bell rang, he quickly engaged and sent out powerful blows that penetrated Miranda’s defense. Quitalag’s jabs and hooks targeted Miranda’s midsection and temple. Miranda attempted

to fight back and counter, but Quitalag showed no mercy as he cornered him and continue to send smashing hits. Before the first round ended, the referee stopped the fight to prevent more damage to Miranda. Quitalag emerged as the winner with a Technical Knockout (TKO) victory. Coach Nelson Corpuz elaborated on the advantage of Quitalag as he possesses elevated height, agilty and all what he needs to be a good boxer. “Pinag-aralan na namin yung laro nung makakalaban namin sa finals. Pinaghandaan talaga namin, at yung goal talaga namin ay hindi na paabutin ng 2nd round,” Corpuz stated.

The determination and patience of Firefox’s Lawn Tennis Men’s Doubles John Matthew Desiderio and Miguel Santino Fernando made them conquer this year’s State Universities and Colleges III Olympics, smashing out Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) Stallions in their championship game, at the Tarlac College of Agriculture on December 19. Intensity and excitement filled the TCA’s tennis court throughout the battle, with crowds cheering for both teams. TSU had to keep their pace and power to outlast their tough opponent, BPSU. The favor wasn’t on the TSU’s side on the dawn of the game. BPSU had an early lead over TSU and recorded a large deficit, 4-7. Changing strategies and techniques, Desiderio and Fernando carefully and finely made a

comeback to the game, tying up the game to 7-7. TSU’s aces didn’t gave anymore chance to the Stallions as they fired back-to-back smashes, finishing the battle with a score of 8-7. Coach Shyla Bartido advised the pair to be careful on handling the ball to avoid committing errors and lose the game. Desiderio and Fernando took that advice and performed according to the strategy they had made up. “Nilipat namin yung pressure sa kalaban. Binalik lang namin yung mga bola at hinintay namin silang magkamali,” Fernando remarked. Desiderio and Fernando will represent Region III for the upcoming Nationals State Universities and Colleges Olympics this February 9-14, 2015 in Tuguegarao City

The tandem of Edmark Salonga and Darel Sapad of the TSU Firefox Beach Volleyball Men displayed grace and power to storm several opposing teams as they played their hearts out to conquer silver in the State Universities and Colleges Olympics (SUCO) III 2014 last December 15-21 at the Tarlac College of Agriculture. The record of the dynamic duo remained flawless before their championship game against the assets of Central Luzon State University (CLSU) Green Cobras. With Sapad sending down spikes in the Cobras’ side of the court and Salonga giving life to the crowd, Firefox was able to start the first set aggressively. However, CLSU seemed to be prepared as they were able to outlast Firefox in the end of the first set, 20-22. Second set came and Firefox seemed to be hungry to come back. Salonga’s tricks were gone but his defense brought back the momentum for them to take the second set and finish it strong, 21-14. The third and final set heated up quickly with the efforts of Firefox to tame the Cobras. Firefox was looking pull away but CLSU refused to be left behind. Late in the final set, it turned out to be déjà vu for the Firefox as CLSU were able to close it out on them, concluding the final set with 15-13. TSU had a clean performance throughout the competition, giving not a single set for their opponents until the semis.
