INTERVIEW

PROGRESSION IS KEY Pegasus Airlines is leading the aviation industry to new grounds one development at a time. The Turkish low-cost carrier’s CEO, Mehmet T. Nane, shares its impressive performance results during 2018 with Aleksandra Wood, its strategy for conquering its primary objectives, as well as the latest from the industry

10 September 2018

: What’s new with Pegasus Airlines? How has 2018 panned out so far? In 2017 we witnessed a remarkable recovery in the aviation sector and we predict that the growth will gain momentum in 2018. The positive trends in the sector and our own company have confirmed our expectations, with figures indicating that we are heading in the right direction. The civil aviation sector is in a much better position generally and has managed to shake off the negative impact of 2016. We started 2018 with a target to increase guest numbers and capacity by between 11-13 per cent. We expect to be ahead of this target for the first half of 2018, based on the continuation of positive results in Q1, such as the recovery of the Western European markets and international traffic, causing our guest numbers to rise by 18 per cent year-on-year and record revenues with a relentless focus on ancillaries, with revenues up by 35 per cent and ancillary revenues up by 50 per cent year-on-year. Pegasus currently has a total of 79 aircraft, with an average fleet age of 5.7 years. Pegasus will have a fleet size of 81 aircraft by the end of the year. Another 14 new aircraft will be joining the fleet in 2019. In 2018, we have continued to grow our network with the recent addition of Dammam in Saudi Arabia and Muscat in Oman. We have added six destinations to our network in total, including Bingöl and Usak from Istanbul, Agri from Izmir and Sirnak from Adana domestically, and Muscat and Dammam internationally. In March, Pegasus signed a codeshare agreement with Alitalia, enabling Pegasus guests to buy tickets from Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport to the Italian destinations of Bari, Genoa, Catania, Naples, Turin and Venice, with a stop-over in Rome. Similarly, Alitalia guests can now purchase tickets from Rome, Bergamo and Bologna to Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Istanbul, and from there onwards to the Turkish destinations of Izmir, Adana, Antalya, Bodrum and Ankara, and internationally to Tbilisi. Also last month, Pegasus signed a codeshare agreement with Nile Air, Egypt’s largest private airline. Through the codeshare partnership (launched in June 2018), Pegasus guests can purchase flights from Pegasus channels for Nile Air flights between Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport and Cairo.
