In many countries they invest in this heritage, thus it is very important to recognise the role of local communities; and the benefits should be shared on the ground with local communities. They play a major role in heritage protection and they can make the visitor experience even more valuable.
TTG: In times of crisis, what is being done to protect heritage? How are you equipping people on the ground to protect their heritage?
UNESCO is running a major EU funded project out of Beirut, Lebanon for Syria to better document information on heritage there for the recovery and rehabilitation stages. We are also carrying out training courses with Syrians on how to better protect heritage. At the same time, we work with Interpol and customs officers regarding the illicit trafficking of cultural property out of these countries, as we have increasing illegal movements of this heritage. The work of UNESCO and the people on the ground is very important; the work is ongoing and very challenging, for example one of the archaeologists at Palmyra has been killed and heritage experts are in a difficult situation and

This is why the Director-General, UNESCO, Irina Bokova has made the global call #unite4heritage, as it is everyone’s heritage and especially the young people’s that is being destroyed. Our call also goes out to the art markets, for example to Christies and Sotheby’s where potentially illicitly trafficked objects may appear.
TTG: What role does education play in terms of protection of cultural heritage? What programmes does UNESCO World Heritage Centre have in place to ensure that future generations are educated on the significance of heritage?
We have had World Heritage education programmes for the last 20 years. We also work with the Associated Schools network to make them aware, and in addition to that we have the World Heritage Youth Forum every year in conjunction with the World Heritage Committee meeting. As part of this the students come and tell the experts and representatives of States what they think needs to be done. Young people are very passionate about the

ON LOCATION SWITZERLAND ne of Europe’s most prized destinations, Switzerland is known for being a master of hospitality, standing out among other regional and international industry players with its inimitable expertise in medical and wellness treatments. Reflecting on Switzerland, one envisions snowcapped mountains, green pastures and friendly faces, all complemented by only the clearest air and incomparable freshness – the perfect setting for a recuperating medical traveller or wellness visitor. What else could possibly be asked for? “When it comes to health, wellbeing and quality of life, only the best is good enough in Switzerland. The country is famous for first-class treatments, combined with outstanding and authentic hospitality. With its pristine location in the heart of Europe and its natural beauty, it offers the best setting for a successful healing or a sustainable rehabilitation,” explained hotel manager, Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, Thomas Bechtold. He continued by outlining to TTG that Switzerland has a long history of health treatments, dating back to the very first thermal baths. Also speaking to TTG was director business and development, InterContinental Geneva, Jacky Tresch who elucidated: “Switzerland should be a tourist’s destination of choice when looking for medical and wellness treatments because of its first-class healthcare system, its world renowned medical specialists, its excellent nursing staff and its traditional Swiss values: precision, reliability,
