heritage, cultural and soft adventure attractions are expected to grow rapidly over the next two decades, which explains our latest tourism promotional strategy to tap into these markets. Our promotional strategies are also guided by the nation’s Economic Transformation Programme, which emphasises the development and promotion of tourism along the following themes: affordable luxury, nature adventure, family fun, events, entertainment and business tourism. We will continue to collaborate with the public and private sectors to attract more tourists and promote our country’s tourism. We have integrated joint promotions with local operators, hoteliers, airlines, tourism product owners and airports, and have developed smart partnerships with foreign airlines and operators to increase connectivity for medium and long haul markets.

TTG: Why is Malaysia ideal for Middle Eastern travellers? Malaysia was ranked the world’s top Muslim Friendly Destination in a report by the Master Card-Crescentrating Global Muslim Travel index in 2015. The country is an ideal family destination which caters to the Arab tourist’s various needs for theme parks, shopping, spas and sightseeing as well as honeymoon destinations. Malaysia also has an excellent education system, which has attracted many Arab students to choose Malaysia as the destination for their undergraduate studies. Malaysia is also gaining more interest in this market as a medical tourism destination that offers world class medical treatment. The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), an agency under the Ministry of Health Malaysia, stated that Malaysia is now one of the most popular destinations for medical tourism in the world, as it provides high quality medical care at very competitive prices. A total of 853,875 medical tourists visited Malaysia in 2015. Out of that number, 6,307 medical tourists came from Saudi Arabia, 1,426 from Oman and 676 from the UAE.

DESTINATION EUROPE

ON A NEW COURSE Proud of its tourism product, Europe has witnessed a number of setbacks recently, however, it continues to bolster and promote its impressive sights. Natalie Hami reports

t cannot be denied that Europe offers travellers some of the most memorable landscapes, history and architecture; with the cherry on the cake being the incredible array of museums and the culinary diversity available in a variety of inspiring settings. However, it also cannot be denied that given recent attacks in a number of European destinations, it is expected that there will be repercussions on the tourism industry. A sense of instability was also exacerbated with the recent decision of the UK to exit the European Union, known as Brexit. Despite Europe’s traditional light-hearted mood being replaced by that of uncertainty, according to the European Travel Commission (ETC) tourism performance continues on a positive footing, noting that safety and security concerns and developments in travel facilitation call for closer monitoring to assess the impact on tourism in the mid-term. Executive director, ETC, Eduardo Santander said: “Tourism is one of Europe’s most important industries and it constitutes a powerful tool to foster economic development and employment growth. Amidst increased competition and unpredictable events, European leaders within the sector are called to jointly co-operate to enhance the visibility of Europe and safeguard its image as an appealing and welcoming tourist

ON LOCATION FRANCE nown for its romantic allure, France boasts anything and everything from iconic landmarks to a remarkable culture and culinary scene. France is for good reason the world’s most popular destination in terms of international tourist arrivals, despite dark clouds that have been looming over of late. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC's) Travel & Tourism, Economic Impact

2016 – France report, the destination is expected to welcome 88 million international visitors in 2016, a rise of 2.3 per cent. This is a prediction made in spite of events in Paris in November 2015, and following the recent tragedy in Nice, it is an aim the destination will want to meet and no doubt exceed. However, history dictates that France has resilience, which will no doubt bolster the industry’s confidence. Data compiled by travel tech company Sojern stated that following the Paris shootings, arrivals to the destination witnessed an immediate

At the same time, Sojern’s data revealed it noticed strong travel intent from the UK, the US, Spain, Germany and Italy, amounting to a rise of 67 per cent in travel intent week-on week, demonstrating the destination’s resilience in the tourism sector, a precedent that bears a silver lining for the country in the wake of recent attacks. TTG: As for developments in the Middle East, what can golfers in or travelling to this particular region look forward to? The Middle East is one of Troon’s most important customer bases, and we opened our latest course there just last year in the shape of Al Zorah Golf Club in Ajman, which has been receiving rave reviews. We’ve typically tended to be given more allencompassing contracts in this region, where we’ve managed facilities on a more integrated basis, rather than just one aspect. The headlines Al Zorah has made are just rewards for the efforts of all concerned, and good news for the profile of golf throughout the UAE. The number of courses we have in the Middle East certainly makes our loyalty programmes, especially Troon Rewards and the Troon Executive Card, more valuable for the local market.
