INTERVIEW TTG: How has the new Metropolitan Hotel Dubai been received since its recent re-launch in a new location? Please share a bit about the Metropolitan Hotel Dubai's ethos. The new Metropolitan has been very well received. The hotel sets itself apart as it is one of the few hotels in Dubai with a strong history and connection to the city. In addition, it offers a comfort factor by aiming to be the local neighbourhood hotel, with a relaxed and modern feel, and restaurants that everyone loves. The new Metropolitan has modernised its look and feel. In the rooms and meeting spaces you will find the latest technology and all the convenient amenities for a business and leisure traveller. Our F&B outlets have also adapted by keeping some favourite dishes with a modern twist on the original recipe and presentation. The new Metropolitan caters to the neighbourhood – with its central location and the restaurants, it aims to be great value for money and everyone’s home away from home.

TTG: Why was it important to keep the name and identity of the property instead of introducing a whole new hospitality concept to Dubai? When the Al Habtoor Group founding chairman, Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor closed the original Metropolitan, he made a promise to the city and the fans of the hotel to bring back the property as well as the favourite outlets, Red Lion and Don Corleone. Many UAE and Dubai residents will have fond memories of the original hotel, and we felt it was important to keep the connection with the history of the original property and the restaurants that everyone knows and loves. Both The Red Lion and Don Corleone outlets had large followings when they closed. We have seen a great number of guests who used to visit the original outlets express their joy when we reopened. In The Red Lion you will find the original bar, which we had preserved. It is now over 33 years old and has been

KEEPING A PROMISE

restored. The Don Corleone restaurant has retained the iconic checkered red tablecloths and boasts a similar layout to the original.

TTG: How do you predict Dubai’s tourism industry will develop over the next decade? How do you feel Dubai’s tourism product stands out in the GCC and why is it such a unique destination? Dubai is always beaming with energy and will continue to grow in the coming years. The city offers high-quality

Keeping its word to the city of skyscrapers, Al Habtoor Group relaunched the Metropolitan Hotel Dubai at the very end of 2016, in a new location, following the demolishing of the original 1979 property in May 2013 to make way for the innovative Al Habtoor City. Sharing all with Tatiana Tsierkezou, the property’s general manager, Sanjay Luthra, speaks of the unique relaunch

products and a great location. This, along with the strong guidelines set by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, guarantees that our property operates as per world-class standards.

TTG: Share a bit about yourself and tell our readers how you got into hospitality. I was born into a hospitality background. My family owned hotels in India and I have always had a connection with the hospitality industry. My passion for my job and the industry comes from my passion of making people smile. As the general manager of the hotel I get to bring joy not only to our guests but also to our incredible staff.

ON LOCATION SWITZERLAND ome to over 450 varieties of cheese and internationally renowned for its high-quality chocolate, Switzerland certainly has much to impress upon residents and travellers alike. Whether it is trying its expert hand at either of these crafts, Switzerland never ceases to lure visitors with its all-year-round charms and dreamlike landscape. Marketing and communications manager, The Chedi Andermatt, Isabel Frey explained to TTG that despite the country’s small size, it awes visitors with its diverse offering. “There is the beautiful nature with mountains and lakes on one side and there are beautiful cities for shopping and cultural events on the other side, paired with a high-class level of hospitality and service standards. It is an ongoing process to keep this attraction for visitors and a lot of passion in the tourism industry and hospitality industry is needed.” Offering its guests enviable views of the Swiss and French Alps, Chalet RoyAlp Hotel & Spa’s board director and managing director, Philippe Attia elucidated on the noteworthy role that nature plays in Switzerland’s tourism allure. “Switzerland is a country which is characterised

by more attention to nature. This form of tourism, more respectful of conservation of natural resources, helps to raise awareness about the enormous value of the mountain areas,” said Attia, adding that there exists a great awareness regarding landscape protection and being respectful of natural beauty in all mountain areas.
