When to go

From June until September, it’s time to ski in the Southern Hemisphere! Count on the help of our consultants to choose the month that best matches your holiday in the snow.

JUNE It’s the start of the season, and like every beginning, it comes to surpass expectations! Each year has its particular features, but in general, snow arrives mid-June and covers the Andes with a beautiful white blanket. Those who go at the beginning of the season gain insight of what’s to come during the season, and can take advantage of the promotions and early bird specials!

JULY A very popular month! The resorts are very lively with the energy of families and young people on school holidays. Everywhere you look you see moms and dads smiling proudly to their little skiers! To join in on the excitement, the hotels and resorts have many après-ski programs and can organize further for guests to participate in, as well as special games for children.

8 8

AUGUST In the midst of winter, the slopes are incredible and the constant snowfall leaves the region even more inviting. With kids and students back in class, the resorts are now perfect for a different type of skier: it’s time for groups of friends and couples to experience the south. During this time, the scene becomes somewhat more relaxed, but the après-ski is even more lively! August it the month where skiers from the Northern Hemisphere flee the summer heat and come to enjoy the snow of the Andes.

SEPTEMBER Last call! The temperature is starting to rise, but the snow accumulated over the past few months guarantees a great time on the slopes. With Spring around the corner, afternoon light comes in a rosy hue, which makes the Andean sunset its own spectacle! This is the most romantic time of all seasons. With the end of the season approaching, the prices for this period are usually the most attractive - worth checking out!

Without television and internet only available for emergencies, this is a place to immerse yourself in the simplest and most precious things in life. It all began in 1961, when Americans Bob Purcell, and his partner Dick Aldrich, bought Portillo at a Chilean government auction. In a prime location: next to the Laguna del Inca, surrounded by snow-covered mountains that are among the highest peaks of the Andes, and that gorgeous dye of pink as the day comes to a close. With so many possibilities, the partners sought out someone who was focused, bold and fearless to take care of the work. That’s how Bob’s nephew, Henry Purcell, a recent Cornell University graduate, was called to get Portillo on the map. So that’s exactly what he did. He founded the ski school, installed cable cars, opened ski runs and created a very personal hotel style. Just five years after it’s opening, in 1966, Portillo hosted a world-wide ski event. It was then that Chile entered the world map of snow sports. In the years that followed, Henry bought the resort and passed the administration to Miguel, but the mission remains the same: to offer a unique experience in the midst of the Chilean mountains.

Skiing in Portillo

With 2500 feet of maximum vertical gradient, 80% sunny days, 13 ski lifts, and an average of 25 feet of snow each winter, Portillo has 34 perfect slopes for beginners as well as experts in snow sports. Those who are new to the sport can take classes at the great local ski school and take their first glides along the wide, unpaved slopes operated by Magic Carpet, a treadmill that replaces the lift. It is also there that children learn to ski, then just go back up the mountain. There are seven beginner slopes, among them the favorite Las Lomas, with the amazing view of the lagoon. For those who have a bit of experience, there are six other incredible ski runs, including the famous Juncalillo. Experts are more than welcome in Portillo too, the resort usually hosts professional teams from around the world when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere. No matter

Heliski

To reach the pristine snow...This is one of the greatest desires a skier or snowboarder can have. But getting to it can be a big challenge, especially when there aren’t any lifts that will take you up. If you are however, an early riser, you might catch the powder snow if you’re the very first one up. But like most of us, this is a challenge in itself, so why not venture to the unmarked areas? In the region of Portillo, there is a large quantity of this terrain, and with various differentials that offer distinctive challenges for the skiers. To reach these areas,

Energy, adventure and joy Close to Santiago and with state-of-theart technology, the resort stands out for its energy and liveliness

Slopes for all levels, lively people and investment in lift infrastructure make Valle Nevado one of the most prominent resorts in the Southern Hemisphere. Not to mention its easy accessible location. Just 43 miles from Santiago (or 50 from the capitol’s airport), the resort has one of the most practical accesses in the whole continent, making it easy to spend a few days in the snow. After a day on the mountain, guests of its three hotels and condominiums can check out the lively après-ski in the pubs, and a variation of meals between the six local restaurants: Chilean, Italian, French...

34

35

There are even shops and a leisure area that includes an inviting outdoor heated pool, spa, yoga class and movie theater...entertainment galore! The resort also has an excellent structure to cater to all levels of skiers. Don’t you worry though, everyone has a chance to slide down the steep slopes of the Andes while embracing the beautiful landscape formed by a sea of snowy peaks. In recent years, an investment of 150 million dollars has been transforming the region into an increasingly modern ski center: wi-fi on the slopes, heated lockers, and equipment upgrade, just to name a few. With 70 gondolas capable of carrying six passengers each, the newest gondola travels a mile and leaves the skiers directly in Bajo Zero, the point in the middle of the

Heliski

In Valle Nevado, heli ski - which is the practice of skiing and snowboarding in areas only accessible by helicopter - is a tradition that began in 1988. This happened because the peaks of more than 13 thousand feet of the snow-covered Andes Mountain range were so tempting, and could not be ignored by athletes. Although the adrenaline rush that runs in this form of skiing is high - even just the sound of the helicopter and the view of the mountains are already astonishing - everything is done with the utmost care. The focus is safety. The instructors are experienced and know every face of every mountain, and are able to anticipate the

The proximity to Santiago leads to Valle Nevado receiving many families. Therefore, the resort has developed a series of tailor-made activities for the little ones. It all starts at the Kids Club, the ski and snowboard school for children from 4 to 11 years old, which combines experiential knowledge

instructors teach kids to glide through the snow with balance and safety, making learning fun and exciting. In class, the little ones will adapt to the equipment, develop proper posture, learn to make curves and slow down to a stop. After mastering those first steps, they’ll train on the Magic Carpet until they gain enough confidence to go on the slopes. In addition

The Chillรกn volcano is what represents the Biobio region in the Andes, with its enticing ski runs for winter sport lovers, and that special energy combined from mother nature, and the heart of this ski resort. Guests come from all over to ski all whilst admiring the lush forests, crystalline rivers, and 17 volcanic craters that are among the most active in Chile. The volcano gives its name to the town of Chillรกn, about 50 miles from the ski center, named Nevados de Chillรกn, and the Gran Hotel Termas de Chillรกn, known for its water park with thermal waters.

The ski resort of Nevados de Chillån consists of a combination of altitude, humidity, and winds that create a great quantity of powder snow to fall in this region. The abundance of this white gold and 3609 feet of vertical gradient were enough to inspire the installation of a structure that includes 9 ski lifts, 28 runs of different levels, a snowpark, and a large backcountry area for those freeride enthusiasts to explore. The characteristics of the terrain and the consistency of the snow in this part of the Andes, are factors that have skiers and snowboarders coming back season after season. Certainly the impressive 360° view from the top of the mountain, allowing you to see Sierra Veluda, Antuco Volcano and Dumuyo Volcano, make skiing on this mountain even more exciting. The view is so extraordinary that it reaches the province of Neuquen, in Argentina. With an extensive potential for sporting use, the hotels developed to meet the needs of snow lovers with big doses of charm and warmth. Chillån has hotels with distinct style, which gives the resort the advantage of being able to attend to different profiles of travelers.

The force of nature in the Andes The spectacular view of the top of the Lonquimay volcano, the dry snow and the perfect slopes make Corralco the perfect place for those who want to combine love of nature with a passion for sport.

Before the eyes, the beauty of the snowy peaks of the Andes; soft snow under the skis; the cold air in the lungs, and, in the blood, the heat of adrenaline. This is the feeling you get high on the mountain in Corralco, a resort that thrives on the quality of the snow, the beauty of the landscape, the long duration of the season, the slopes and the quality of backcountry skiing. The Corralco Mountain & Ski Resort sits in a privileged area of the Andes within the Malalcahuello National Reserve, and at the foot of the Lonquimay volcano in a region further south of the Cordillera, which allows for longer seasons and great snowfall - about 23 feet per year!

70

71

All the runs are above the tree line, which allows for great visibility. Thanks to the slope of the volcano and gravel terrain that lies below the snow, the slopes and backcountry areas are more “soft and safe. As the resort is still relatively unknown to the general public, the traffic is much less on the slopes and lifts, however Corralco has quickly become a perfect retreat for anyone who truly loves skiing. In order to serve these sport lovers, the Valle Corralco Hotel & Spa emerged as the only hotel that was allowed to be built inside the National Park Malalcahuello, and that was involved in the mission to protect the beautiful forest of centenarian araucarias that surrounds it, as well as all the biodiversity that inhabits there. Chosen by the United States Olympic ski team as a training center during the Northern Hemisphere summer for its great structure and snow quality, Corralco serves all levels of skiers - from the most challenging for the experienced, to the most stimulating for beginners and intermediates. It has also continuously invested in the training of ski and snowboard instructors, in order to gain the preference of sportsmen who wish to develop their skills on the snow.
