Change Can Change

Awarded COA's Minimum Investment Maximum Impact Project of the Year for the academic year 2014-2015, Tugon Ateneo's Change Can Change enterprise has created a legacy that is slowly starting to spread, and the best part is: not only in Ateneo! Currently, there are 120 cans in circulation, mostly in restaurants found in Ateneo, Katipunan, and UP Town

Center, but high hopes are in place to propagate this project in more commercial areas such as the Fort and Ortigas. A project that started out as a simple venture has largely supported Tugon Ateneo's flagship project, the National Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Week (NCSAAW). Change Can Change has served as an effective avenue for various companies and families to contribute to Tugon Ateneo's advocacy. Whether it’s Change Can Change or “Be the Change,” one thing’s for sure: awareness of this issue has been successfully more widespread after this project and that is, in its whole reality, the best change that can happen.

Feature: The Advocacy Department With more than a thousand members, Tugon is the largest student organization in the Ateneo. At thirty years young, its efforts in raising awareness, and its active presence in the lives of the girls and babies in their partner institutions has established the organization as a notable force in the battle against child sexual abuse and abandonment. As a student-run organization, Tugon’s appeal and influence on the Ateneo campus is evident on the impact of its varying projects, area insertions, and the prominence of the org’s icon – the pinwheel. With the sheer size of the organization, it is undeniable that direction, the embodiment of the org’s mission in every

aspect, is needed to pursue its ambitions of being bigger than the Ateneo and being a mainstay in the cause at hand. At its core, Tugon is about advocacy, and 2015 marks the first year of the department that seeks to guide it towards just that. The Advocacy department, headed by Nico Rollan, is a product of the Tugoner’s spirit (and Ignatian values) of improving, of doing more. It’s in information that this department finds its ground. “It is a three-pronged approach,” as Nico puts it. True enough, the department branches out to community development, research and development, and awareness campaigns, and each runs with its own head and deputy.

In partnership with other departments and even other organizations, the Advocacy department hopes to spread information through community insertions, conferences, campaigns, and ultimately, Tugon’s flagship project, NCSAAW. In line with its mission, raising awareness and educating people about the value, importance, and possibility of fostering an environment free of child sexual abuse and abandonment is a step that Tugon takes to reach society’s shared goal of peace and safety. It is the gravity of this advocacy that reminds us all that this is “bigger than the org.” Say “Hi!” to Tugon’s first Advocacy Director, Nico Rollan!
