OUR STORY Before the winds of war blew across the nation, a concerned group of Tulsa businessmen organized in May 1937 as the Tulsa Builders and Contractors Association. This group of builders and subcontractors had survived the previous decade following the greatest economic depression in our nation’s history, but “rocketing prices in materials” and “chaotic conditions among the construction workers in the residential field” were threatening an economic recovery according to the organization’s first president, Morris Turner. By 1938, the association was affiliated with the Tulsa Real Estate Board as a member of the division of home builders until 1940 when the realtors sponsored the Home Builders Institute of America (HBI) of the National Association of Real Estate Boards. Many Tulsa builders and land developers became charter members of HBI with Turner named a national director. In the fall of 1941 at the Realtors Convention in Detroit, a movement was set in motion to combine the Home Builders Institute (HBI) with the National Home Builders Association. That movement was triggered when builders were told by an official of the Office of Production Management that the government was planning a takeover of the housing industry. Builders, realizing that private industry could be shut down during the war and afterwards, went into action and established the Home Builders Emergency Committee located in Washington, D.C. The following year, that merger was complete and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) held its first convention in Cleveland. In 1942, the Tulsa Builders and Contractors Association reorganized as the Tulsa Home Builders Association (THBA). THBA was a NAHB affiliate and received its charter on July 1, 1942. Morris Turner was elected THBA’s first president and Robert E. Adams its first national director. On October 26, 1942, the War Production Board took action, in effect, to nationalize home building. After intense lobbying by NAHB, the Board’s order was rescinded four days later. At the same time, THBA was active in making war time regulations workable under a priority system and supplying all of the housing necessary for the Douglas bomber plant without government assistance or outside help. According to Turner, the THBA was responsible for stopping a promotional project that would have resulted in a great mass of undesirable and unneeded housing. By 1946, employment was high and demand for housing resulted in the creation of new subdivisions. America’s most beautiful city was expanding. The 1947 Model Home Show, presented by the THBA, was advertised as the first in the nation and featured seven homes on a single site in the 700 block of South Sandusky Avenue. Participating builders were Otis E. Nidiffer, Mrs. R. B. (Maude) Butler, Larry Brooks, Roy Morgan, Vernon Mudd, Bob Adams, and Morris Adams. The next show of its kind wasn’t until 1955 when the Parade of Homes was held in the Max Campbell Fifth Addition (Southland). Since then, the Parade has been produced annually throughout the Tulsa metro area as a marketing resource for the sale of new homes. From 1963 to 1985 the Parade was complemented by the Festival of Homes with builders and allied professionals available to answer the public’s questions about new construction, appliances, decoration, and sales and financing. The Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show of today evolved from THBA’s 1949 New Home Product Show. That Show was held at the Arena skating rink located at 11th and Norfolk. Subsequent shows were held at the Tulsa Coliseum, Fairgrounds Pavilion, and Civic Center before the Show moved to its current location at the Tulsa Expo Center. The Greater Tulsa H&G Show holds the distinction of being the largest home show in the region as well as the largest allvolunteer staffed home show in the nation. In 1979, home improvement was not only popularized by the premier of This Old House on PBS, but by the creation of the Remodelers & Reconstruction Council. The Council’s first president, Ken Klein, recognized the need for contractors with renovation experience to serve their industry and the public by establishing quality standards, networking with allied professionals, and performing community service. For almost 40 years, the Remodelers Council has fostered excellence and professionalism, and raised public awareness of the remodeling industry through the Remodelers Redux, Remodeled Tulsa Tour, and Home Remodeling Showcase. The 75-year history of this Association has been such as to lead one former president to remark “home builders seem to thrive on adversity”. Despite the regulations and restrictions tossed in their path, members of the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa (HBA) are proud to have played a part in Tulsa’s progress and contributed to its beauty. This publication is dedicated to the many HBA members who have served in the past, sustained it in the present, and who will contribute in the future given its long-standing tradition of service, standards, and sustenance. 75th Anniversary 2017

In 1989, the Association began recognizing home builders who made the best use of Associate members in constructing their homes. Each year, many worthy companies enter projects for consideration which are then analyzed by an accounting firm to determine what projects used the highest percentage of goods or services by HBA members. This award symbolizes the importance of the teamwork between the contractor and subcontractor and how very important it is when building a new home to use only qualified craftsmen and suppliers‌our Associate Members.
