2018 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
President Ryan Farabough Farabough Homes, LLC
By HBA President Ryan Farabough
Vice President/Treasurer Erin DeWeese Brian D. Wiggs Homes, Inc.
This year is moving right along and with builder confidence high, and the economy back on track, it should shape up to be a great year for our members and association as well. We just completed our annual Home and Garden Show, which is the largest volunteer run show of its kind in the country. Walking through the Expo center as our teams of volunteers transform the massive space into the showcase it becomes, is simply an amazing process and a testament to the hard work of all those involved. I would like to personally congratulate the chairman, Chris Hodges with Arvest Bank, and vice chair, Allen Jenkins of Silvercrest Homes, as well as the numerous committee members and volunteers on another successful show. This show is very important to the HBA, not only for the customer contacts it provides our participating members, but also the opportunity for the HBA to participate with the community, and for the significant financial impact it has on our HBA budget allowing us to offer the many member benefits and services that we are known for.
Vice President/Secretary Mike Fournier The Sonrise Companies
On top of that, it’s NAHB’s triple spike month, so recruiters will earn extra credits for each new member they recruit. I encourage everyone to get involved and recruit! Help us grow the association to 1000 members and get some great prizes alone the way, this is a win-win. If you haven’t had the opportunity to get involved, you can reach out to our Membership Director, Gabby Bridenbaugh to find the perfect place to get plugged in. You can also attend one of the President’s Reception meetings to find out more about our Association. It has been a great first quarter and I look forward to seeing what else we can accomplish together in 2018!
Our Parade of Homes is scheduled for June 16-24 and will have something to offer for every potential homebuyer Sincerely, with over 145 homes entered. Chairman Mike Fournier is already hard at work making the 2018 Parade a successful event. This year with three Twilight Tours, located in the Stone Canyon, Yorktown, and River Stone Estates Ryan Farabough subdivisions, there will be more opportunities than ever for the public to see the innovation and style that our parade builders have been working so hard to complete. Lastly, under Chairman Allen Jenkins leadership, the membership committee has put together what is probably one of the most exciting membership drives we have ever had. Nothing gets people energized like a little competition and with the prizes and events that they have come up with, I think we have everything positioned to get our membership base growing.

By Executive Vice President/CEO Jeffrey Smith I was always told April showers bring May flowers, but I don’t think that was intended to be April snow showers! The weather pattern in Oklahoma has definitely been active over the last month with 80-degree days, deluges of rain, snow, freezing temps, and I’ll add earthquakes and wild fires. The Association is also in our most active time of the year with the conclusion of the Home and Garden Show, the fishing tournament, Appetite for Construction, the golf tournament, the Parade of Homes, and government affairs work. The 2018 Greater Tulsa Home and Garden Show was once again a great success on many levels for the Association and its members. More than 100 volunteers ascended on the River Spirit Expo building to spend the week committed to make the 2018 Show the best in history. Under the leadership of Chairman Chris Hodges, the Show had more than 540 vendors and 25,000 in attendance. The new and expanded layout created a fresh look for the public as they entered the building and new features like the HomeMADE Stage, Cooking with Gas Stage, and Park allowed for guests to take a break from shopping to be entertained or rest for a few minutes. Overall the vendors were pleased with their amount of leads or sales and the Association met our budgetary goals. This could not have been a success without each and every one of our volunteers, so, on behalf of the HBA leadership and staff… THANK YOU!!! The fishing and golf tournaments are held in April and May and both are on pace to have great turnouts. 21 teams competed in the fishing tournament on April 13th and 14th and although the weather wasn’t the greatest it didn’t stop the guys from catching some large bass and having a good time. Special thanks to Chairman Jimmy Holmes for organizing the event for several years in a row. The golf tournament will be held on May 1st at the Patriot and we already have more than 25 teams entered. Owasso Land Trust made a great contribution of the Patriot Golf Course to allow these teams to play on one of the top courses in Tulsa. Thank you to Dennis Boroto, Tarah Duncan, and Ann Howell for CoChairing the golf tournament and making it a success. Now I just have to cross my fingers for good weather on May 1st!
Appetite for Construction, the annual fundraiser for the HBA Charitable Foundation, was held on April 19th with more than 200 guests enjoying great food and cocktails from some of Tulsa’s finest chefs. Funds raised from the event will help the foundation continue its mission of housing and education in the Tulsa area. Chairwoman Carrie DeWeese and the committee did a masterful job of planning the event and securing donations for the auctions. Finally, after the Oklahoma teacher walkout at the first of April, there has been a record amount of interest in individuals running for office. This is sure to be an active year in Oklahoma politics with the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and national, state, and local house, senate, and council seats up for grabs. We are making a push for members to contribute to the NAHB PAC so that we may continue to support those candidates that are friendly to the residential construction industry. A special recognition goes to HBA members, Craig Thurmond, Darren Gantz, and Kyle Smalygo, for committing their time and talent to serve or potentially serve their community through elected office. Keep up the hard work and help the Association out by contributing your Fair Share ($25) to BuildPAC today. That’s the scoop for now,
Jeffrey Smith

Mayor Thurmond Invited Back to White House In March, Mayor Craig Thurmond of Broken Arrow was one of 14 mayors invited back to the White House for further discussion about President Trump’s Infrastructure Initiative. The President has emphasized that the nation’s infrastructure must be rebuilt and modernized to create jobs, maintain America’s economic competiveness, and connect communities and citizens to more opportunities. This meeting’s smaller audience provided Thurmond with the opportunity to ask questions and to speak about Broken Arrow’s commitment to public infrastructure investments, and address how the President’s proposed plan could potentially benefit Broken Arrow specifically, as well as other communities across the nation. Broken Arrow has made public infrastructure investments a publicpolicy priority and is an example to the President that municipal support for on-going investments has a positive effect on the local economy and overall quality of life. Mayor Thurmond was joined on this trip by Broken Arrow City Manager, Michael Spurgeon. Together, they’ve established relationships with White House staffers and Oklahoma’s congressional delegation that’s resulted in another meeting with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to address additional grant funding for Broken Arrow projects. In August, Broken Arrow voters will consider a 10year capital investment package totaling just over $210 million. Nearly $140 million of this proposed package will be for street and road improvements alone. The funds for these projects and initiatives require voter approval and the dedication of property taxes to repay the debt-service for the program. No doubt, the White House will be watching.

NATIONAL NEWS
National Designation Month: Meet Peter Grant, CGR, CAPS March is National Designation Month, which gives NAHB a chance to shine a spotlight on some outstanding building industry professionals who were named Designees of the Year for 2017 and honored in January during the 2018 International Builders’ Show. This week we say hello to Peter Grant, CGR, CAPS, president of Grant Homes Remodel & Restoration in Tulsa, Okla., who was named NAHB Remodeler Designee of the Year. “Receiving my Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) designation gave me the ability to distinguish myself from my competitors,” Grant said. “In an industry rife with fraud, identifying myself as a NAHB Certified Graduate Remodeler gives my customers confidence that they have made the right decision choosing my company for their remodeling needs.” The president of the HBA of Greater Tulsa, Grant is a lifelong Tulsan. His company was founded in 1989 and has always specialized in the renovation of homes in Tulsa’s historic districts. Recognized for his historic preservation expertise and achievements, Grant serves as a mayoral appointee to the Tulsa Preservation Commission. As a former president of his HBA’s remodelers council, Grant raised the professional standards of the council by promoting educational programming and encouraging members to exchange industry trends and information. In his current role as HBA president, he promotes the value of professional education and champions its Ambassador Program, which was developed to cultivate member retention. “I am absolutely convinced my CGR designation has improved my business,” said Grant. “Not only do customers prefer to hire credentialed remodeling professionals, the CGR curriculum has increased my knowledge base, making me both a better builder and businessman.” Grant has earned the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation and is a NAHB instructor. He is also a member of the NAHB Remodelers Board of Trustees. “I am a firm believer in education,” said Grant. “We can learn through trial and error, but it is far easier and more profitable to do something right the first time than to suffer the embarrassment and cost of learning the hard way. Invest in your business. Invest in yourself.”

Floral Sales at 2018 Tulsa Home & Garden Show Spring into Large Donation For Food Bank The HBA of Greater Tulsa partnered with Reasor’s and News on 6 during the 2018 Tulsa Home & Garden Show. Reasor’s floral department was on the scene throughout the entire event, allowing attendees to brighten up their homes and the lives of local children by purchasing bouquets and flowering plants for a $5 donation. 100 percent of the buy one, get one free ticket sales on Thursday evening of the show were also donated to the cause. The HBA Charitable Foundation contributed another $3,000 to make a total $7,712 donation. The proceeds were presented to the Food for Kids program, which provides nutritious, kid-friendly food to students to take home on Friday after school.
On March 22 the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa, KOTV News on 6 and Reasor’s presented the donation check to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. Thank you to all who contributed to this worthy cause at the 2018 Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show.

OSU Chapter Champion-Sage Ellis In March 2018, Sage Ellis was named the recipient of the HBA Charitable Foundation Endowed Scholarship Honoring Lindsay Perkins Development (the “Scholarship). Sage is a Junior enrolled in Oklahoma State University’s Construction Management Technology program. Her Scholarship award was $2,500. More importantly, Sage is the student who has championed a residential construction curriculum at OSU and her efforts are supported by long-time faculty member, Prof. Mark Pruitt. Together, they have revived the dormant OSU Student Chapter with a dozen students interested in pursuing a career in residential construction and Prof. Pruitt has agreed to serve as the Chapter’s faculty advisor. The following individuals were recently elected as Student Chapter officers and chairs: Sage Ellis, President Rafael Estrada, Vice President Brody Branson, Treasurer Marybeth Colpitts, Secretary Levi Voss, Philantrophy Chair Jake Griffin, Social Chair
Construction Management Technology is a highly specialized area of education that trains students to pursue careers in management of the construction processes. Students entering this field follow an educational program that is oriented toward the business and management aspects of construction. In addition to the classroom requirements for the degree, students are required to gain on-the-job experience. If your company has an internship opportunity this summer, please consider the students listed above. Contact the HBA for the resumes of these students and others.
