City Guide 2023

Page 1

Anything can Happen Feeling That

Tulsa might be known as boomtown for its origins as an oil city, but today it’s booming with a new kind of prosperity. Every region and neighborhood of Tulsa offers something unique for visitors and residents alike, which is why we compile this City Guide every year at TulsaPeople. From festivals that come annually to the arts, sports and staples in between, there’s always something to do in Tulsa.

For those of us putting it together, City Guide is an exciting time to reflect on all the ways the city has changed in just 365 days. It’s my hope that with this issue in hand, Tulsans will celebrate all Tulsa has to offer and support the local businesses, organizations and individuals making our city a destination.

Happy reading!

McNellie’s

With scores of beers on tap and over 250 more in cans/bottles, McNellie’s is the go-to place for beer aficionados or those looking to tuck into some delicious pub food. Whether you want to take in the downtown atmosphere or enjoy south Tulsa, both McNellie’s locations are excellent options for sharing breezy patio cheers with friends.

In the Raw Vu and On the Hill

These two Tulsa locations of In the Raw feature breathtaking Tulsa skyline views. The south Tulsa patio (On the Hill) is a favorite for capturing the sunset over the city and the downtown rooftop location (Vu) is fantastic if you want to feel like a part of the sunset itself. Nosh on nigiri or rolls routinely voted Best Sushi in the city. If raw fish isn’t your thing, go for a gourmet filet, or bowl of noodles or rice.

Located in downtown’s hip East Village District, this pizzeria boasts one of the coziest courtyard patios in town. Sip on Instagram-worthy cocktails and enjoy woodfired pizzas topped with sumptuous toppings such as pancetta, fresh mozzarella, Castelvetrano olives and Prosciutto di Parma. GET ACTIVE

Parks

The City of Tulsa has 135 parks and six community centers for ample recreation opportunities. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, children can cool off in one of the many swimming pools, free splash pads and water playgrounds scattered throughout the city.

Find a city park near you using the City of Tulsa’s Parks Finder at maps. cityoftulsa.org/parksfinder.

Walkers, runners and cyclists will find plenty of trails and paved paths throughout Tulsa RiverParks: 800 acres of land stretching along the Arkansas River. Visit riverparks.org for a map of trails.

Climb Tulsa

Located just off the Broken Arrow Expressway at South Yale Avenue, the hardto-miss Climb Tulsa facility is among the largest climbing gyms in the nation.

It offers 17,000 square feet in which to train or climb for fun and is accommodating to all ages, founder Jason Burks says. For younger climbers, the gym has a separate, less difficult climbing area and hosts various kids’ camps that teach climbing skills.

An avid climber himself, Burks had seen massive climbing gyms in various cities across the country. He decided Tulsa needed something similar. “You’re not going to find a city the size of Tulsa with a gym this cool,” he says.

BIXBY

Bixby is a booming community with its school district being one of the fastest growing in the state.

The tiny but mighty downtown district bustles with events throughout the year, including the widely popular BBQ N’ Blues Festival and Green Corn Festival held in the summer.

JENKS

On the banks of the Arkansas River sits a bucolic yet burgeoning community with plenty of things to do.

Since 2003, Oklahoma Aquarium, 300 Aquarium Drive, has been teaching visitors about the aquatic world. Visitors can experience Sea Turtle Island or the Polynesian Reef, walk through the shark tunnel, which houses the world’s largest collection of bull sharks, as well as visit faroff locales like the Amazon. Check the website to help plan your visit around the animal feed schedule or the stingray and shark touch tank schedule. Numerous special events fill the calendar — like ZZZs in the Seas public sleepover or the ever-popular HallowMarine.

Scott’s Hamburgers is a downtown institution serving up old-fashioned burgers known as some of the best in the state.

Bixby features a plethora of outdoor amenities. Along the Arkansas River, Washington Irving Park features an arboretum and multiple walking paths. Lake Bixhoma is popular with anglers and kayakers. Countless sports events happen at Bentley Park Sports Complex throughout the year.

Harmony Bridge spans the Arkansas River and is perfect for food truck events or catching a breathtaking sunset.

A walk down Main Street treats shoppers and diners to an array of storefronts. Along with a collection of antique shops, Main Street is host to restaurants like Kitch Cafe and George’s Pub, plus gift shops, a yoga studio, bicycle shop and so much more.

Along the banks of the Arkansas River sits Riverwalk, a collection of restaurants, bars and venues that deserve a visit. Tee up at the nearby GolfSuites for some active entertainment.

Tulsa Riverside Airport sits on more than 700 acres with nearly 500 aircraft based at RVS and is known as one of the busiest airports in the nation.

BROKEN ARROW

Tulsa’s neighbor to the east is packed with hometown charms and family friendly events.

Broken Arrow’s downtown Main Street — also known as the Rose District — has everything a trendy shopping district could need. There are high-quality restaurants to satisfy any craving, upscale shopping and plenty of activities on this strip. With breakfast spots, salons, a yoga studio, steakhouses and boutiques, there is something for everybody in the Rose District. Complete with the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center, a library and an interactive water feature, there is plenty to entertain whomever visits.

This year’s Taste of Summer is from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Aug. 5, at Central Park on Main. The annual event is a celebration of all things summer, including unlimited Blue Bell ice cream, a kids’ craft area, food vendors, shopping, water inflatables and so much more. Tickets can be purchased at tasteofsummerba.com.

Several memorials stand at Veterans Park, located on the southern end of Main Street, right next door to the Broken Arrow Veterans Center, which serves as offices for local chapters of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion and others.

OWASSO

A booming suburb with plenty to see and do any day of the week.

Owasso seems to be a golfer’s paradise as numerous clubs and greens are available. Bailey Ranch Golf Club and Owasso Golf and Athletic Club are popular public options. The Patriot Golf Club is a private course that opened in 2010.

SAND SPRINGS

Owasso’s downtown is known as the Redbud District. Centered around Redbud Festival Park — a free, public space that hosts events year-round — the area is perfect for an afternoon stroll. Shoppers can find plenty of clothing options, as well as cooking and kitchen supplies, home decor, a pharmacy and more. Diners descend on the popular MAD Eats (try the shakes) while Emersumnice Brewery entices with its ales and woodfired pizzas. Downtown staple Giant Subs and Deli is a great place to pick up a sandwich on the go.

Beyond the Redbud District, Owasso has several shopping destinations all within a short drive. Try Smith Farm MarketPlace for your big-box and chain storefronts. Across Highway 169, pop into Surcee Gifts and Home for a wide collection of quality goods. Head to East 86th Street North for a smattering of locally owned retailers and food purveyors.

Founded in 1908, this western suburb is home to industry, growing residential communities, local retailers and an award-winning golf course.

Downtown Sand Springs is home to Triangle Park, a green space that hosts the community’s annual Herbal Affair and Festival. Nearby find local storefronts like Big Dipper Creamery, Boulder Coffee, Little Venice restaurant, Okie Spice and more.

Each year downtown Sand Springs is home to one of the longest and largest nighttime Christmas parades in the state. Mark your calendars for Dec. 1, the 40th year of the annual holiday tradition.

Managed by Sand Springs Parks, the Keystone Ancient Forest is a preserve encompassing 1,380 acres near Lake Keystone of Cross Timbers forest, with some trees ranging up to 500 years in age. A recently opened visitor center sits at the head of several hiking trails of varying lengths. Visit the park’s Facebook page for a collection of special events, such as pet-friendly weekends. OPEN THURSDAY-SUNDAY | 160 ANCIENT FOREST DRIVE, SAND SPRINGS

In the past several years, the River West shopping district, just off of State Highway 97 and U.S. Highway 412, has welcomed health care centers, local and national chain restaurants, as well as retailers.
