5km Santa Run Start Line

CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL IS A GREAT SUCCESS £4500 raised for St Michael’s Hospice in Tupsley St Michael’s Hospice held its first ever Christmas Festival in December at Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School. There were many stalls selling Christmas gifts and provisions but the centre piece of the event was a 5Km Santa Run for the over 11’s and a 3Km reindeer Antler walk for the under 11’s. The 5Km runners were given a Santa Suit to run in together with a bottle of water and a certificate at the finish. Each child was given a pair of reindeer antlers and a flashing red nose to do the guided 3Km walk accompanied by carol singers. Snow cannons ensured a white Christmas. At the finish was a winter wonderland where the adults could enjoy a free glass of mulled wine. 400 people attended the run or the walk, and over £4,500 was raised for the Hospice! That was pretty impressive for the Hospice’s first ever Christmas Festival. Look out for a repeat event next Christmas!

I saw pots of daffodils for sale in one of the local supermarkets. They reminded me that Easter will be with us fairly soon.

BIOLOGY/SCIENCE TUITION

To be fair, it wasn’t just the daffodils. Working alongside my Anglican colleagues at St. Paul’s we have recently put together an ambitious program of Easter services. If you can’t get to one particular service there will be an alternative, complimentary act of worship at the other church.

Almost like the daffodil bulbs – we too are in the process of planting a little bit of sunshine and joy into Tupsley! You will find the full list of Easter services in this issue. Easter can be an odd time. For those who do not attend church, daffodils, chocolate and an early holiday might come to mind. Sadly, pleasurable as they are they will soon pass and it will be back to the grind stone/school/ wash tub/ work place (delete as required). For those who do attend church it becomes a time of remembrance and ref lection on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. His death, making possible the acceptance and forgiveness of our sins and his resurrection as the doorway to the gift from God: everlasting life through Him. Even if you do not have a strong faith the words attributed to Jesus, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” ( John 15:13) are still worthwhile as a life principle. It is a powerful allegory on how we all should demonstrate our love for one another. It also brings to mind these other words of Jesus on how we should love one another: “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Mark 12:31)

See our Facebook page for more information

Whether we believe in God or not, if we applied those principles to our everyday lives I am convinced that the world would be a better place for all. If before we spoke or acted, we considered treating others as we would want to be treated, regardless of what they did or said to us, there would be less tension and greater harmony in our lives and in the neighbourhoods in which we live. That is certainly easier said than done. However, Easter is truly about the sacrificial nature of love: which is for Christians the central theme of our seasonal ref lections. The daffodils will bloom in time for Easter with a wonderful display reminding us that there is new growth after the dullness of the winter months. However, they will not last for ever. We too can grow, not outward with eating chocolate, but as the people of this community of Tupsley. Remember, at first there were only twelve disciples or followers of Jesus, and because of their belief and faith in the Easter story, today, millions around the world have had their lives changed for the better. Now surely, that is good news to share this Easter and importantly, it will last. It’s not hard, we just need to start doing it. Every blessing on you all Revd. Martin Hardy, Minister, Hampton Park URC

TupsleyVoice Shared Garden Scheme

FAIR TRADE DAY Saturday March 14th Hampton Park United Reformed Church

Back in the autumn of 2013, Tupsley Councillor Jim Kenyon promoted a shared garden scheme. The idea is that those with gardens that are too difficult to manage or have a redundant vegetable plot should be matched up with gardeners who wish for more growing space. An agreement is drawn up relating to the terms of access and how the produce will be shared between gardeners and owners.

(Hampton Dene Road)

10:30am – 2pm Come for coffee and biscuits from 10-30am, and stay for lunch, served from 12-00pm [made, as much as possible, from fairly traded and /or local sources]

After the first two days of clearing up basis, the owners in this case wish to be actively involved in gardening but are unable to set it up or do the more physical work aspects. I have been fortunate in enlisting the help of Headway a local charity which assists those with acquired brain injury. Two members of their gardening club, with a little help from me, have taken on the garden which they are currently preparing for the coming growing season

Having recently retired I applied to take on another garden and was introduced to a couple who are unable to manage their vegetable garden.

May 2014 the garden was really coming on well. Should any reader be interested in offering their garden or in becoming a gardener please contact Jim Kenyon (Mob: 07711 316 013)

We have recently taken on another garden on a different

You either love it or loathe it! Gardening can be a bit like that, can’t it. If you loathe the garden and the work involved, then jump to the next page. Should you enjoy the work and the results from it then read on. St. Paul’s Church has some lovely garden areas that need enthusiastic help and inspiration.

The work involved is varied, from maintaining garden seats and bird tables, pruning roses, weeding to of course mowing and strimming. Would be helpers would have a simple induction on how we operate, the use of the machines (mowers etc.) if needed and any other H&S issues involved. The results of your efforts will be admired by the many visitors to the church and its grounds which in itself is very rewarding. We look forward to meeting you. David Poole

If you feel that you would like to join the team and have something to offer, then contact the parish secretary Kim Hutton in the Benefice office for details. Tel: 01432 274490.

As you can see the garden was a bit overgrown but had been cultivated until the year before. I spent a couple of days clearing weeds and digging the plot but after this initial effort I only needed a couple of hours twice a week to turn it into a very productive garden.

All proceeds from the day will go to the work of CHRISTIAN AID.

Watch for further details or ask at the Coffee Shop on a Wednesday morning. Alternatively ring Joyce Busby Tel: 358 244 for details and bookings.

The churchyard and garden areas are maintained by a small group of dedicated volunteers, maybe marmite lovers, but more help is needed for this current season.

The Hereford Waterworks Museum is another of Hereford’s secret gems. The Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1895 to pump water from the River Wye to supply drinking water to Hereford. The steam engine installed in 1895 is still in the building and is the oldest triple expansion steam pump still working in the UK. The museum has dozens of exhibits illustrating the history of water supply, with engines operated on every open day.

TupsleyVoice Combating Loneliness

Sheep Festival

‘There is a problem of loneliness that, in our busy lives, we have utterly failed to confront as a society. Apart from the sheer cost of human unhappiness, loneliness is as bad for one’s health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It is worse for you than obesity because it increases the risk of heart disease, blood clots and dementia.’ Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health, October 2013

What a wonderful time of year Spring is! How lovely it is to see the days lengthening, blossom appearing on the trees, bulbs beginning to shoot and hear the birds singing in the trees. Here in Tupsley we are especially fortunate – just a few minutes drive and we are in the beautiful countryside. What can be nicer at this time of year than watching the new born lambs frolicking in the field bleating excitedly?

A national conference, ‘Combating loneliness’, organised by the Diocese of Hereford and chaired by Hereford’s new Bishop, the Right Revd. Richard Frith, was held on January 31st at the Shirehall, Hereford. Delegates to the conference were from the Voluntary sector, Health professionals, Community groups, Parish councils, Parochial Church Councils, the City Council, and Faith groups : all with a shared attention to the fact and features of loneliness in society today and with a concern that we might address better this distress in many people’s lives. Loneliness can be the consequence of our situations changing beyond our control e.g. when a local pub, shop or post office closes, austerity cuts in public transport. When we are isolated from family and friends, physical mobility, sight or hearing diminishes and we find even using the phone is beyond us : for some the devastating effect of losing their driving licence. With all the wonderful advances and benefits in science and technology during the past 50 years, it was suggested, surprisingly, that even mobile phones and Facebook can at times be a potential source of loneliness. For example, when you are on your own and haven’t received a text message or phone call all day you search in your mind for a reason to phone anyone just to hear the sound of another human voice to break the awful loneliness. On Facebook other people’s lives can seem to be so much more successful, attractive and fulfilling than your own and sometimes you can feel excluded from where it’s all happening. With young people this can result in a loss of confidence and self-esteem often retreating in loneliness to their room. It’s interesting that in the very first book of the Bible Genesis ch 2 v 18, it says ‘The Lord God said, “It is not good for man to be alone”. We are very fortunate in Tupsley in having the Tupsley Community Coffee Shop held every Wednesday between 10 am and 12 noon, at Hampton Park Church, Hampton Dene Road. This is an oasis for people from all backgrounds and walks of life where you will always receive a smile, a kind word, and a listening ear. The Coffee Shop is entirely self-funded and supported by volunteer helpers from the Community and St. Paul’s and Hampton Park Churches. All you need is £1 to receive a cup of coffee or tea, with a free refill, and biscuits. A fortnightly foot clinic is provided by Age UK, and every week there are cakes and pastries from the St. Owen’s Centre, Traidcraft products including cards, fresh vegetables and eggs at David’s Market, and Jill’s pantry. Council green bags are also available. From two observers of this very well informed Conference, we would add that it is Jesus Christ, as revealed in the Bible, who can meet and heal the deepest needs of the human personality. The Revd. David Clark and Ray Walters

6 | TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2015

I am sure that a great many of you know but the name Tupsley comes from the words “tup” and “lea” which means the “sheep’s field”. To celebrate this fact, and to tie in with the 150th year anniversary celebrations of the building of St Paul’s Church here in Tupsley in 1864/65, the Church has decided to hold a “SHEEP FESTIVAL”! The festival will be launched on March 8th and will last for a month ending on Easter Sunday (April 5th). There are several events and activities planned including an Activity morning, Palm Sunday procession, and a Sheep Quiz. The winner of the Sheep Quiz will receive £10. There will also be Sheep Hunt. You should notice several “sheep” appearing around the local area. They will vary in size, shape, colour and material. We hope that, as well as reminding you of our association with the “sheep’s field” and linking into the many Biblical references to sheep and lambs (especially at Easter time), they will bring a SMILE to your face! These sheep are part of the Festival’s “sheep hunt trail”. It is also possible to do the trail in several sections. It starts and ends at St Paul’s Church and has several short cuts back to the church if you run out of time or energy. There are several places along the trail where it is possible to rest and play, have a picnic or get refreshments, so you can make a day of it if the weather is fine! The winner will receive a selection of Easter goodies. You can obtain both the Quiz and the Sheep Hunt Trail sheets, at a cost of £1 each, from the Benefice Office in St Paul’s Church Community Centre or from Pam Pratley, churchwarden, (Tel: 357 770). All entry forms should be returned to the Benefice office or Church by Sunday 5th April. There is a post box at the Community Centre Door and in the Link corridor to the Church. All correct answer sheets will be entered into a “hat” and a winner drawn out after the service on Easter Sunday. Here is a sample of what the Sheep Hunt Trail might look like; “Walk around the front of the Church. There is another sheep on the West door. What is its name?” So why not become a shepherd for the day and see if you can spot where all your 25 sheep have wandered off to?”

TupsleyVoice Hidden Gems on the Lugg Meadow

Young People’s Groups

Hidden from view for most of the year but only a stone’s throw from Tupsley lies a rich array of wildf lowers and in particular, the nationally rare Snake’s head fritillaries which grow on the Lugg meadow. However these delicate and predominately white petalled f lowers can only be seen over two to three weeks when they f lower in April.

FC Pheonix Saturday Morning Football Club

Luckily the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is at hand to lead you to them during its annual fritillary guided walks which will take place this year on Saturday 18th April from 10am to 2pm at its headquarters in Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Tupsley, Hereford HR1 1UT. Local experts will explain the history and wildlife that make the Lugg meadow nature reserve unique. The guided walks will leave at half hourly intervals with the first one leaving at 10.30am and the last one at 1.00pm. On the same day the Floodplain Meadows Partnership will be surveying the fritillaries for the fourth year running and we are looking for volunteers to help count them. So if you are interested in helping with the annual count please email either Sue Holland at s.holland@herefordshirewt.co.uk or Emma Rothero at emma. rothero@open.ac.uk. No previous experience is required. The Floodplain Meadows Partnership is also sponsoring Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s WildPlay team who will be leading a ‘Marvellous Meadow Explorer Trail’ for children aged 6 years and upwards. Come and find out why there is a buzz about Lugg meadow. This event, which is free, will be limited to 15 children plus accompanying adults, so booking is essential. Please contact the Trust on 01432 356872. For more information on this specific walk visit www.wildplay.org. Teas and coffees will be available and the Trust’s Orchard Origins team will be present, selling apple juice, cider and chutneys. However it would be advisable to bring a packed lunch and come equipped with good footwear and warm clothing as it can be cold at this time of year. There will also be a plant stall. The cost of admission is £3.50 per adult. Children go free. TupsleyVoice Apprenticeships and better jobs for all young people by Jesse Norman MP

Chatting to Tupsley resident the Rev Andy Goode at my Jobs Fair last year inspired my apprenticeships campaign in Parliament. Andy runs the local Christians Against Poverty job club and he pointed out to me a serious inconsistency in how the benefit system treats young people. If a 16 to 19-year-old stays in education, their family can continue to claim Child Benefit and Tax Credits for them. But if that same young person takes up an apprenticeship instead, they are counted as being in work and their family can no longer claim benefits on their behalf. This means that families of 16-19 year olds who start apprenticeships may lose up to £83 per week in benefits. Last November I introduced a ten minute rule motion in the House of Commons, calling on the Government to conduct research into the costs and benefits of extending eligibility for Child Benefit and Tax Credit to young people completing apprenticeships. I was supported by fellow MPs Angie Bray, Jim Shannon and Graham Stuart, the chair of the influential Education Select Committee. My motion also received backing from the National Institute for Adult Continuing Education (NIACE). The House of Commons unanimously passed my motion and it has been printed as a Bill. At this late stage in the parliamentary year, the present Bill is unlikely to become law, but it will provide a focus for me and my colleagues to continue to campaign on the issue. It just goes to show how local issues can inspire national campaigns. My third Jobs Fair will be on Friday 20 March at the Shire Hall and it promises to be bigger and better than ever. It’s a great opportunity to bring employers and job seekers together, alongside workshops ranging from CV-building to interview skills. Altogether around 50 local firms have been represented at my Jobs Fairs so far, including Bulmers, Rehau, S&A Group, Harrison Clark Rickerby and Sanctuary Housing. We are adding new sessions on opportunities for those who are just starting out in the world of work, and inviting a wide range of local organisations to be focused on young people. It will include study opportunities, and apprenticeships – a subject on which, as explained above, I have been vigorously campaigning in Westminster. One of the best parts of my work has been hearing from local people who’ve found work as a result of attending my

Amazing Muesli Year 4 pupils at St Paul’s School have been learning about the importance of eating a good, healthy breakfast, with help from Celia from Farmcare Ltd, who they met last term on their visit to Tillington Fruit Farms. She brought in different types of cereal crops and the children investigated the ingredients used in the breakfast cereals they eat at home. Then every child made their own delicious muesli mix to eat at breakfast the following morning! They are already planning to visit Celia at Tillington again next term, at blossom-time. Bryan Joseph 1929 - 2014 Bryan Joseph, born in Credenhill in 1929 and a resident of Longworth Road since the 1960’s, with his wife Glenys, who he married in 1956, sadly died on 25th September. Their son Iain was born in 1964. Very sadly Bryan had to bring up Iain by himself after Glenys died in 1978 when Iain was only 13. Bryan never really got over this loss, but it was a loss that brought Bryan and Iain into an even closer relationship than most fathers and sons. Bryan was very proud when Iain successfully applied for work with the police service when he left school. Their relationship blossomed still further with Iain’s marriage to Claire in 1992 and the subsequent birth of grandchildren Matthew and Amy. Bryan spent many weekends in Redditch with Ian and Claire. Bryan was a regular and energetic member of Hampton Park URC after first worshipping with Glenys at St Paul’s church until the new URC church was built in 1976. He served as an Elder and Treasurer of the church for several years and was a valued member of the Fabric Committee that dealt with the maintenance and development of the church building and contents. An abiding interest in all things aviational was one of Bryan’s passions and attending air shows, with Ian, Claire, Matthew and Amy, were events to be treasured. Throughout the 1990’s Bryan was Treasurer of Tupsley Community Newspaper until Tupsley Voice superseded it in 2001. For many years during that period the income from sales and advertising had to be supplemented by receipts from an annual charity auction and Bryan is well remembered for his enthusiasm and hard work preparing for the sale and working on the day. 10 | TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2015

Tupsley Woman Provides Some Intellectual Stimulation For Oaps Hello everyone, my name is Jan Rosser and I am the founder of Oapschat. I was born in Hereford, have lived here all my life and now live in Tupsley. My career path has taken many twists and turns from banking to book keeping and pharmacy. I’ve been caring for my disabled mother full time for many years, and in 2013 I realised I was becoming somewhat isolated and insular. Although looking after Mum is time-consuming, it’s also somewhat repetitive. So I felt I needed an outlet, something other than the same routine day in day out. I am an avid iPad user and I love to scan websites for interesting topics and news stories. I realised there was little on the WWW for people in their fifties and above. So, in April 2013 I set up a facebook page at www.facebook.com/ oapschat. This would be the start of my new venture. I posted links on many subjects connected with the golden and silver years of our lives. The likes started coming in, I was mentioned in The Daily Mail, more likes followed, and to date I have 730 members. November 2013 saw the launch of my very first website www.oapschat.co.uk . Slowly but surely this started to take off. I began to realise that I could write articles and see them being commented on. This gave me a real buzz! I invite authors, businesses, shops, restaurants, companies and friends to write articles or take part in Q & A sessions. I have been given prizes by many of my contributors and I raffle these prizes on an almost weekly basis. It’s hard work and sometimes I wonder what I have taken on. But I really enjoy it and somehow the caring element of my life has become much more manageable. Mum gets involved, too. She helps me by telling stories about her own life and much more besides. So she feels part of this new venture. As for me I’ve made lots of new friends, learned so much about other people’s lives, and my own horizons are broadening daily. In May 2014 I was thrilled to be included in The Independent 100 Happy List, a great honour and a total surprise. The following day I was on local radio talking about the website. So, as far as I am concerned, Oapschat is my baby and I am going to nurture it for a long, long time. Jan Rosser – Oaps chat Editor – Readers, do look at the web site, you will find it most impressive and hopefully stimulating.

Chess Volunteers needed at St Paul’s School Would you be able to spare the occasional hour to support St Pauls Primary School chess club by working with us? You would be playing and advising our children with one or two other volunteers in addition to a teacher. Only a basic knowledge of chess is required in order to support the newer and younger players in their development. If you would like to know more or to help out as little or as much as you feel able please contact Mr McEvilly at school for an informal chat. TupsleyVoice Pets need clean teeth too! Free Consultation If you are worried that your pets’ teeth may not be as healthy as they could be you are probably not alone. It is estimated that 80% of adult dogs & 85% of cats over 3 have some sort of dental disease. Causes of dental disease are the same as in us humans. Gum disease is an infection caused by build-up of plaque bacteria on the surfaces of the teeth, which forms tartar. Plaque and tartar irritate the gums. Effects of dental disease that you may notice are bad breath, visible tartar build-up, gum redness or even missing teeth. You may or may not notice your pet sleeping more, eating differently, playing less, or grooming less due to dental pain. One effect that isn’t visible is bacteria from the mouth gaining access to the blood stream and therefore the vital organs of the body, due to gum damage. Pet dental care includes a variety of options. Tooth brushing is not only the best but, is also the cheapest option. Now it’s not for every pet, but many pets can be taught to accept tooth brushing if introduced correctly. Other options include dental care diets, dental chews, drinking water additives and dental pastes. Ask the Experts: Throughout the spring we are focussing on dental health at Brookfield. We offer a ‘Pearly Whites Club’; free nurse consultations, by appointment, to discuss and demonstrate homecare options. We want the pets of Tupsley to have Herefords healthiest teeth! Bright Sparks Early Years at the heart of North Tupsley! As you will all be aware from the Winter Issue of Tupsley Voice there are plans in place for Broadlands School to move over to the Aylestone School site by September 2015. However we were informed only at end of January that Bright Sparks will not be relocating with them. It will be sad for us to see the demise of Broadlands School in its beautiful position overlooking the Lugg Meadow, but want to reassure you all that we will NOT close this outstanding pre-school, and are currently looking for a new home in Tupsley and the surrounding area. The Local Authority are supporting us to find alternative premises but are happy to let us stay where we are until a new home is found. Meanwhile this very popular and successful group is bursting at the seams and happy to extend sessions to cater for parents commitments ready for September 2015. Therefore if you would like to be one of our many happy Bright Sparks families please do call or email. Katie Shepherd. Tel: 01432 278249 & 278877 or email broadlandsbrightsparks@yahoo.co.uk
