a Christmas ‘ tree’ and Wendy Price gave us the idea of involving the community. Hence the decorating of the roundabout began.

We like to plant in an eco-sustainable way which reflects our suburban gardens and encourages wildlife and pollination. We use the same eco principles in decorating ie reusing and recycling. We decided to involve our community by firstly asking for recycling donations for us to do the crafting and then by asking for their creative contributions. Rainbow Nursery, Scout Corner were the first to help by creating brilliant Valentine hearts. Since then, St Pauls Childcare, Bright Sparks Nurseries and members of the public, all ages, have been awesome in their enthusiasm and

Tupsley is a lovely place to live. Please keep it tidy by taking your litter home and not dropping it on the ground, especially in the children’s play areas where bins are provided.

In many ways it feels like a homecoming, as I was born in Hereford and, during my early years, lived near Eardisley.

It’s a delight to have the opportunity to serve as Curate in the church and community here in Tupsley and Hampton Bishop.

TupsleyVoice

Revd Joe Chipper (Curate)

At the end Summer term St Pauls Primary school said farewell to Mrs Aston, who has been teaching the violin at the school for 30 years. She has taught so very many Tupsley children the first skills of playing the violin and developed their potential. Everyone wishes her a very Happy Retirement.

It’s been quite an interesting journey, challenging at some points, like recently moving from Ledbury to Tupsley mid ‘lockdown’. Thankfully helped by my brother Rob and sister in law Mo, (in Hereford), who kindly put up with us moving in for a few weeks before our house in Tupsley was ready! We are so thankful for the kindness of others who helped, for instance, storing my beloved Triumph motorcycle between moves…. and giving it back! It’s a joy to have moved somewhere where people make time for one another.

Income generated at thePoint4 supports our work with young blind and visually impaired students, so your fitness regime really does help a good local cause. We look forward to seeing you again very soon.

My name is Joe Chipper; I along with 10 others were ordained on July 4th at Hereford cathedral by Bishop David Thomson, our own Bishop Richard having to self isolate after being “pinged”- strange days in which we live.

If you’re feeling a bit of out condition, thePoint4 - your local fitness centre - is the perfect place to get into shape. We’re ready to welcome you back to our gym and classes, as well as a lovely new café!

Before we moved back to Herefordshire, Chrissie and I had been actively involved in various missional partnerships and joint church initiatives. Along with Shania, our daughter we moved to Ledbury in 2016, specifically so I could start applied regional theological training. I completed my study with CHG (Cuddesdon, Gloucester & Hereford) a regional division of Rippon College, Cuddesdon, in Oxford, at the end of July.

The warmth of the welcome from the Churches and neighbours here in Tupsley has been worth the wait. God has landed us in the right place, I’ll try not to add too many grey hairs to our Vicar Nick Armstrong! We look forward to this next chapter and joining in with all that God is doing here.

Bishop’s D of E students do volunteering

The group is running once a month (on the first Friday,) and will be undertaking practical conservation work as well us helping the Trust to increase our monitoring coverage during the growing period.

In addition to the volunteering part of the Award, which is one hour for 3 months, they must also complete 3 other sections to obtain their Bronze Award. The one that all the students look forward to is the expedition, which this year took place over the weekend of 26th & 27th June. The Year 10s started at Bridstow, just outside Ross and planned routes which took them to Ballingham, where they camped overnight. The next day they again had to plan routes which brought them across the Rotherwas cycle bridge and back into Tupsley, where they finished the journey at school. They did this carrying all their equipment, food and clothes in a rucksack.

This group means that volunteers from Hereford can join regular conservation work parties without the need for personal transport and will provide a real boost to these special sites.

From late April until early July six students from the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat school helped with the maintenance of St Pauls Church graveyard as part of the volunteering section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. For one hour every Friday afternoon after school they have been using mowers and a strimmer to cut the grass, removing countless ant hills, shovelling and moving compost and sweeping footpaths, all under the guidance of maintenance team members.

Herefordshire Wildlife Trust has started a new volunteer group to support our work in the local area, covering Lugg Meadows and Hampton Meadow Mature Reserves.

Recently, they planned a (virtual) Coach Trip that took in the sites of America. Each day they visited a different American State and enjoyed local specialities from entertainment to food. When they arrived in California a tour of Hollywood was a must and they enjoyed a fabulous photo shoot on a movie set!

The residents at the new Brockington House Care Home in Hafod Road have been continuing to have fun and enjoy themselves despite Covid restrictions. The activities team have focussed on creating a fun programme that enables the ladies and gentlemen in the home to learn new skills and visit past hobbies. Every day is different and it’s important that the ladies and gentlemen have a varied and active lifestyle.

One task this Spring was cutting the vegetation surrounding the ponds on Rickyard pasture. These were put in in 2016 to provide habitat for amphibian and invertebrate species. By removing the vegetation late in the year, we give wildflowers the chance to drop seeds before mowing and by removing the hay we take away the nutrients that otherwise allow more robust grasses, docks and thistles to out-compete - keeping the area diverse. We have also taken out some willow to prevent it potentially taking over the ponds and shading out the banks.

Students usually complete the Bronze Award in Year 10, and then some go on to complete the Silver Award in year 11 and Gold Award when they move on to Higher education. It is a great thing for young people to do and can really challenge them. It also helps when applying for jobs and completing applications in later life. I hope that more Year 10s will be able to help volunteer in the church yard with this next academic year. - Emma Robertson

The other two Award Sections that need completing to achieve the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award are developing a skill and showing development with a physical task.

All of them are developing their cooking skills for their Award. Gabriella and Olivia are perfecting their tray bakes, Henry his cup-cakes and Joe various pasta dishes. All the boys are developing their rugby skills and fitness training. Gabriella has taken up running and can now run 5km, and Olivia has taken up fitness training linked to workouts on U-Tube.

The home offers luxury living with exceptional residential, nursing and dementia care. They also offer short term stays for those requiring post-operative rehab or a break.

Doreen endlessly supported her family in all their interests, including running the café at Broomy Hill for the Model Engineer Society, attending the Hereford Lions Club and the Dean Waterfield lodge, all where Derek was an active member. In later years, Doreen was a longstanding member of the Tupsley Townswomen’s Guild. She was also well known for being involved in the Girl Guides throughout her life. Soon after settling in Hereford she assumed a role as a Guide leader at St. Peter’s Church, later becoming a Commissioner for many years, before retiring as the District Commissioner for Hereford North. She never turned down an opportunity to help people. She was a founding member and Club Secretary of the British Heart Foundation sponsored Hereford Heart Support Group for 19 years, alongside Derek as Chairman.

Very sadly, Tupsley resident Doreen Foster, a well known hard-working volunteer and member of many organisations, passed away in January at the age of 87. Born in 1933, Doreen Foster moved to Hereford aged 22, shortly before she married Derek Foster, where she remained for the rest of her life as a valued member of the community.

At Hampton House Care Home, Hampton Bishop, she was on the Management Committee and a much-loved operator of their mobile tuck shop, before later becoming a resident there herself at the age of 82. After 5 years’ residence in the care home, where she was well supported and frequently visited by all members of her family, Doreen sadly died in residence in January 2021. birthday parties, and any other festivities which called for celebration. She loved to travel, and to regale stories from her travels to her grandchildren.

The Women’s Tax Resistance League helped women get their possessions back by bidding at auctions, after seizure for sale in lieu of taxes; a precarious occupation when auction houses were dominated by male auctioneers and bidders.

The Church League for Women’s Suffrage was a national organisation that campaigned for women’s ordination. Florence herself was “most decidedly in favour” of the ordination of women and became Chairman of the Church League in 1912.

The family left Hereford when Reverend Canning died, and Florence travelled abroad extensively. On her return to England, she settled in Kensington and became a professional artist. Around 1906 she gave it all up to become a member of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). She was a popular and active campaigner, taking part in demonstrations and speaking at meetings all over the country. Members of the WSPU were usually described as “suffragettes”, rather than law-abiding peaceful “suffragists”, but unlike some of the other militant campaigners, Florence did not participate in any violence or hunger strikes. When she was arrested for obstruction in 1908, she protested her innocence that she was peacefully walking with a group of women to the Houses of Parliament, but was still sentenced to a month in Holloway Gaol.

There are plans for a final celebration “centenary afternoon tea” at Castle House in October.

Sadly Florence did not live to see women win the vote. She died of cancer on Christmas Eve 1914 in Brighton. Her body was brought back to St Paul’s where she was interred near many members of her family. Members of the WSPU attended her funeral, and she was buried with a suffragette wreath on her grave. She was mourned by suffragists and suffragettes alike, and her memorial fund raised £256 (a huge sum at the time), to help equip an operating theatre at the Women’s Hospital, Harrow Road, London.

In 1910 Florence was injured in what became known as the “Black Friday” protests when the police assaulted women who were again peacefully trying to approach the Houses of Parliament. Having been subsequently diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, she still continued campaigning, becoming involved in the East London Federation of Suffragettes, the Women’s Tax Resistance League, and the Church League for Women’s Suffrage. The East London Federation was run by Sylvia Pankhurst, who espoused peaceful protests unlike her mother Emmeline and sister Christabel Pankhurst.

Few visitors to the graveyard at St Pauls Church, Tupsley will have noticed that alongside the school footpath, near the church door, is the last resting place of Florence Canning. Florence was a suffragette, but there is much more to her story. Florence was born in Hereford on 19th May 1863, and had six younger siblings..She was the eldest daughter of Eliza and Reverend Thomas Canning. Rev. Canning was the first vicar of St Paul’s (1864 -1896) who saw the church building completed in 1865. He then set up the elementary school for local children, now St Paul’s Primary School, which opened in 1868, where Florence and her siblings were probably pupils and probably worked hard in the parish to support the poor and needy. Rev Canning was a much-loved clergyman who had to cope with various tragedies over the years, including the notorious murder of his neighbour Philip Ballard at The Knoll in 1887, and in 1891 the death of his son George Canning at the age of 25, who succumbed to typhoid whilst working in Brazil. George is commemorated on a plaque in St Paul’s Church. In 1893 Rev. Canning and Eliza went to Malvern for a rest cure and to take the waters, but further misfortune struck when their carriage overturned after the horse shied and bolted. He never recovered from his injuries caused by the accident, and in 1896 he retired from parish duties, dying six years later, and buried in St Pauls Churchyard

Tupsley WI’s delayed centenary celebrations continue, enjoying a delayed “covid free’ centenary cake at our June meeting on the patio outside Bartestree Village Hall.

It was a beautiful sunny day for our visit to Hampton Court, enjoying a chat and a picnic before exploring the gardens. Our recent Art Deco talk brought back memories with some of us wondering what happened to the glass dressing table set we remember seeing at Granny’s!

In September we will be focusing on The Great Big Green Week, a nationwide celebration of actions to tackle climate change and protect green spaces. We will discuss what steps and actions we can take to help improve the environment with plans to follow this up with a litter pick.

A few changes had to be made - social distancing, mask wearing if walking around and signing in. After 6 weeks we have managed to iron out any problems and today welcomed 53 people who are all grateful for the opportunity we provide.

After much deliberation we decided that July 21st was going to be the day we had all looked forward to for some months - the reopening of the Tupsley Community Coffee Shop at Hampton Park Church. So on that morning we prepared to welcome whoever turned up. We were amazed to find that over 30 people arrived full of smiles and relief that they could come and chat over a cup of coffee once again.

Also back is the Fairtrade stall, card stall and green bag sales are still taking place. Unfortunately we have lost several of our customers and helpers. If anyone feels they can spare 2 hours a month to help out we would be most grateful. We meet between 10 am and noon every Wednesday. If you would like to join us please contact Pam Pratley on 357770 or Wepampratley47@gmail.com.lookforwardtomeeting customers and helpers.

Herefordshire Nature Trust Volunteers removed the vegetation late in August at the Trust’s riverside Reserve at River Meadows Hampton Park Road. This late removal gives wildflowers the chance to drop seeds before mowing, and removing the hay will take away the nutrients that would otherwise allow more robust grasses, docks and thistles to outcompete the wild flowers – thereby keeping the area diverse.

Margaret became a member at Hampton Park United Reformed Church and soon became one of the elders of the new church, then the Hereford Presbyterian Church.

Hampton Park Church will be a drop off point again this year for the “Shoebox Appeal” in November. If you are unable to fill a shoebox, even one or two donations such as a toy, crayons, soap (not liquid) or toothbrush (toothpaste is not allowed), or if able, knit a hat or scarf, it would be greatly appreciated by the children and their families. Shoeboxes bring such a lot of joy to so many at Christmas. In 2020, 265,975 packed shoeboxes were given to children in eight countries across Eastern Europe, Africa and Central Asia!

The gifts that so many people gave to Christian Aid in 2021 have changed lives. The theme was “Every Last Drop”.

Tupsley Voice is sad to report that the Revd Dr Margaret Renton, well known as a NonStipendiary minister at Hampton Park Church (1988 – 2009), passed away on 29 June 2021 just short of her 90th birthday.

When Morag was old enough to go to Boarding school Margaret returned to work for several years as a doctor in the A&E Department of the County Hospital. During this time Margaret felt a call to ordained ministry and after the due process of the United Reformed Church was accepted for training as a Non-Stipendiary minister and some four years later was ordained at a service at Hampton Park in October 1988.

It is sometimes said that ministers never really retire [and I should know] and neither did Margaret, continuing to help out at both Eignbrook and Hampton Park as she had done in those earlier days.

TUPSLEY VOICE AUTUMN 2021 | 9

Margaret was always a strong supporter of the partnership between Hampton Park and St Paul’s churches and was a good friend to many of St Paul’s clergy and congregation. Together with Charles, himself a hard working Elder, Church Secretary and Church Treasurer at Hampton Park URC, they gave many years of faithful service to the Christian work carried out in Tupsley.

small church at Huntington. She continued in this role until 2002 when she retired.

Charles died in 2009 and soon after Margaret returned to her homeland, first in Edinburgh. Her health deteriorated whilst in Edinburgh and so she moved to live with her daughter Pamela and son in law George on their farm in Beith [20 miles SW of Glasgow].

Margaret and Charles Renton came to live in Hereford in 1969. Their reason for moving to Hereford was the appointment of Charles as a Consultant General Surgeon at the Herefordshire Hospitals.

I met Margaret first in 1985 when we both commenced ministerial training at the same time, but we didn’t really get to know each other well until 1992 when I came to Hereford as the Stipendiary Minister at Hampton Park. We worked closely together for more than 12 years and I Iike to think that the partnership was both successful and happy.

Rose is caught in a cycle of climate chaos. From severe drought to flooding, extreme weather robs her of what she needs to survive: a reliable source of water. When she was a child, Rose remembers how often the rains would fall, giving fruit to the baobab trees and providing plenty of nutritious food to eat. ‘When I was a young girl, there was plenty of food,’ Rose says. Now, the rains are totally unreliable. The climate crisis has galvanised extreme weather and Rose’s community are feeling the brunt of it. For months at a time, Rose and her family live with drought. Rose strives to provide for her grandchildren who live with her. But the climate crisis is driving her to the brink. In times of drought, Rose sets out on a long and dangerous journey every morning to collect water for her family. She walks on an empty stomach. Even when the rains do come, relief for Rose is often short lived. There is a nearby earth dam just minutes away from Rose’s home. It should be a lifeline. But it’s not wide enough or deep enough for everyone’s needs. It runs out of water too quickly. Imagine how dispirited Rose must feel watching the rain fall for days, only to find the dam empty just a short while later. What’s more, the rains are much heavier than they should be, putting Rose’s community at risk of flooding. With a reliable source of water, people like Rose would be free from long, painful journeys. They would be able to grow fresh vegetables to eat. And they would be able to protect themselves from the dangers of coronavirus. With such dire need, every last drop of water that falls in Rose’s community is precious.

This year’s Christian Aid Week, provided funds to help people like Rose to catch every last drop and help them fight the climate crisis? The funds will help communities build better earth dams to harvest more water; sow drought-tolerant crops that grow even with the fewest of drops; or set up an advocacy group to demand change at the highest level and put a stop to this climate crisis. People like Rose need every last drop to survive this climate crisis. Your gifts will have helped to ensure they can. It is not too late to give and help ensure people like Rose have the water they need to live by donating online at https://www.christianaid.org.uk/give/ways-to-donate. If eligible, Gift Aid will add another 25% to your donation

Tupsley Butchers

The Lugg Meadows is an ancient, unique Lammas meadow, which originated long ago, even before the Doomsday Book. It is home to some very special and nationally scarce wildlife, including the snake’s head fritillary, narrow-leaved water dropwort and in the breeding season, the curlew - a bird now on the Red List of Conservation Concern.

Despite Covid Scouting has continued in Hereford & particularly at 1st Hereford Scouts who meet at Scouts Corner, Eign Road.

More information about this project, or if you want to donate, please contact ‘Tosh’ on 07889 075225 / email chris.ruffe@btinternet.com

We were thrilled to see one curlew chick fledge successfully from the Lower Lugg meadow nest. While a small number of curlews continue to nest here annually, it has been several years since a chick made it this far. It is wonderful that despite the pressures of the modern world, this population holds on here on the edge of the city, especially as the curlew is one of our most rapidly declining breeding bird species nationally with a 46% decline across the UK from 1994-2010*. (*British Trust for Ornithology). Because of this iconic bird, public access has been restricted to the Lower Lugg Meadow and Hampton Meadow during their breeding season for some years and these restrictions have now been extended to 2026.

A Wildlife Haven just outside the bustling City

Kind weather during the summer term saw us hiking, shelter building, backwoods cooking and generally having scouting fun after a long time apart.

In September, a grassland restoration project in partnership with Herefordshire Meadows, begins at Lugg Mills. This is an eight-acre island adjacent to the Worcester Road, formed by the confluence of the Lugg and Little Lugg at the north end of Upper Lugg Meadow. This is to increase the number of species of wildflower and grasses which, in turn, will benefit pollinating insects such as bumblebees and butterflies as well as all manner of other invertebrates and small mammals. In preparation for this, we have been conducting bumblebee and plant surveys at the reserve so that we can compare data once the work is completed and monitor the success of the project. This autumn, we will be planting small ‘plug plants’ of wildflower species and spreading wildflower seed once the sheep that have grazed there have been moved on to another site.

SCOUTS CORNER , Eign Road District Headquarters, is undergoing changes next year, with a total rebuild planned!

We will be launching a fund raising campaign this autumn, so please support this exciting venture - especially if you know someone who has benefitted from or had the pleasure of using the hut over its long history (scouting, gang show, parties, engagements, anniversaries, receptions, discos etc).

There were also reports of multiple curlews on the meadows this spring, with at least one pair nesting on the Lower Lugg. In order to protect this rare bird, Natural England withdrew open access rights there for the duration of the breeding season to reduce disturbance to the sensitive nesting sites. Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is working alongside Herefordshire Ornithological Club on a project to monitor and protect these special birds.

SCOUT POST is hopefully returning this year, so watch out for advertising - we will be mindful of the need to cancel if Covid situations change.

As the meadows settle into autumn after being cut for hay, a little further work is required from Herefordshire Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers to mow around the ponds where the tractors cannot reach - so you may see us out in action.

This spring the snake’s head fritillaries were outstanding and our reserve trainees found them in new locations on the site! The Lugg Meadows is one of the last strongholds of this unique flower. Once widespread across the country, found on traditionally managed floodplain meadows, they now reside in a few strongholds in southern and eastern England and eastern Midlands river valleys.
