It would appear that this old photograph was taken when the memorial was dedicated, perhaps on 11th November 1919. The highest clergyman alongside the cross is the Dean of Hereford with the vicar of Tupsley, Revd. Ledger, on his right. Revd. Ledger’s son, Raymond Ledger, is sadly one of the 48 who died.
The cross was provided by Retired Lieutenant Henry Hewat and his wife, who lived at The Elms, Aylestone Hill with their daughter Geraldine. He lived there until he died in 1922, is buried in St. Paul’s Churchyard, and was a Churchwarden. Henry Hewat and his wife dedicated the cross to:-

These family names together with Edward Archibald Hume (relationship unknown) are on the metal plaque on the side of the memorial.
As always Tupsley Cross had a lovely display of poppies to remember all those who have died in battle. Tupsley Cross records the names of 48 people who died in the 1st World War (1914 – 1918) and the stone vase alongside records the 7 people from Tupsley who died in the 2nd World War (1939 – 1945).

Prayerful,
It’s the nearness and Love of Jesus that’s captured by Christmas. That God, stepped in love into His creation, to be near us, blows my mind anew each year. This makes sense of the saying; “Love came down at Christmas”.
Revd Joe Chipper, Curate: St Paul’s Church, Tupsley, & St Andrew’s, Hampton Bishop.
TupsleyVoice
The appeal in Tupsley Voice Autumn issue and elsewhere for Christmas Gifts to be put into a shoe box to send to deprived children throughout the world resulted in 56 shoeboxes being collected at Hampton Park URC. In addition there were many bags of knitted scarves, hats, toys and extras also donated to put in as fillers into the shoeboxes. Hampton Park URC thanks every person who contributed, thereby sending some love to deprived children throughout the world. To make each box unique, those donating the boxed gifts were invited to enclose a letter, to give the child a glimpse of how much other people around the world care about them.
But perhaps most of all, the memories stirred by carols.. so familiar yet so full of meaning if we listen again to the words…
“Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay Close by me for ever, and love me I pray”..
“He came down to earth from Heaven, Who is God and Lord of all.”
Last year was so hard, being separated from family and loved ones, we couldn’t be together. It gave me a glimpse of how much God wants to be part of our lives, not just at Christmas but everyday, in the small things as well as the big things.

Past Minister of Hampton Park URC Dies
It is with sadness that we heard of the death of Rev John Gardiner in September. John was minister at Hampton Park from February 1980 – November 1985 and during that time he met and married Margaret at St Paul’s Church in 1985. Our thoughts and prayers are with Margaret.

It would be lovely if you could join us in our celebrations at St Paul’s Church - or alternatively at Hampton Park URC or St Andrews, Hampton Bishop.
After a very long delay due to Covid-19, nearly 60 people attended the service on October 30th to celebrate the contributions made to Hampton Park United Reformed Church by our retired minister Rev. Martin Hardy and our long serving secretary Joyce Busby, who moved to Leicestershire in April to live with her family. The service of celebration was led by the Rev. Andrew Mann-Ray. It was attended by people from the Herefordshire group of United Reformed Churches in Hereford, Ross and Huntington, along with friends and members of St Paul’s C of E Church. Our thanks to everybody who attended. It was lovely to meet up with Joyce, Martin and Janet to celebrate their work and service to the Church, present them with their gifts, wish them a proper thank you, farewell and good luck to them in the future. The service concluded with a wonderful afternoon tea to finish the celebration.

Christmas Day
On Sunday 3rd October, Miss Ruth Hayden-Cox, teacher of Year 3 at St Pauls Primary school ran the London Marathon in memory of Mrs Lizzie Duffield who taught for many years at the school and tragically died last year of Cancer leaving a husband and 2 young children. Lizzie had been a great support, mentor and friend to Ruth when she started teaching at St Pauls School. Then only 3 weeks later on 24th October, Ruth ran the Newport Marathon in memory of her close friend Di Wathen. The runs were part of a three-marathon-challenge including the virtual 'Little London' marathon (4th October 2020), the actual London marathon (3rd October 2021) and the Newport marathon (24th October 2021). Whilst doing the London and Newport marathons Ruth was raising money for Cancer Research UK in memory of Lizzie Duffield and for Mind in memory of her close friend Di Wathen. Ruth was given terrific encouragement to complete the marathons by so very many people giving very generous donations to the two charities. There have been Justgiving donations of £3344.50 so far for Cancer Research and a further £3322.60 so far for Mind, including Gift Aid. If any reader would like to add to those donations the addresses for giving Marathonrecord,Ruthhttps://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ruth-hayden-cox1https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ruth-hayden-cox2are:-successfullycompletedall3marathonsandforthehertimeswere:-LittleLondon:3:29:05,London3:55:56andNewport:3:39:03.

What a night! In perfect weather (dry, and not too cold) people arrived in their many hundreds to watch what turned out to be a brilliant display of fireworks – if not the best ever at the Quarry, then very close. Last year, of course, the event couldn’t be held so it was more welcome than ever this year, and people were very generous in their response, so all costs associated with the event were covered (just!).
Our next event will be the ‘Picnic in the Park’ in July, date and more details will be published in the Spring and Summer Issue of Tupsley Voice.

Members were intrigued to find out about our October talk “Hatching, Matching and Dispatching”. We all listened intently as we were enlightened by the work of a Celebrant, the audience was captivated. Also in October we had afternoon tea at the Castle House Hotel as our final Centenary event; a few members amusingly dressed in 1920’s fashions.
Our new programme is being planned on an ad hoc basis at the moment, but we have a Christmas Lunch out in December and a fun trip to the Panto in January.
A Harvest Ploughman’s Lunch was our October Meeting. Home-made chutneys accompanied the delicious cheeses, pate, and crusty bread, Betty’s apple pie and cream was yummy, as always.
Anyone is welcome to attend a meeting as a guest initially –and then we’ll just take it from there!

Hooray! We are up and running again after a long and difficult 18 or so months. Members are glad to be able to meet up again for a long overdue chat over cake and a cuppa and we held our Welcome Back meeting in September. Currently, meetings are taking place on the first Tuesday of each month 2pm at The Whitehouse Hub. We may return to our normal 2 meetings a month in the new Duringyear.this last summer, and the summer of 2020, we held small garden meetings, if the weather was fine, and it was safe to do so. Following Government guidelines, this meant that small groups could meet for a cuppa and chat in the garden of a willing volunteer member.
Our local environment discussions in September inspired us to take action in tackling climate change and protecting green spaces. Members listed individual actions on green bunting and we are planning to replace a tree in Church Road with the support of our local tree warden.

This term students and staff at Bishop’s School voted for Simoni Shah as Head Girl and Binara Attalapitia as Head Boy. Both students have worked really hard in their time at Bishop’s to achieve these roles. Both rolls carry a lot of responsibility at high profile events and need to be great role models for other students – Well done Simoni and Binara! Both Simoni and Binara went to St Pauls Primary School before moving to Bishop’s

Bishop’s Teacher’s Challenges for Breast Cancer sufferers
Bishop’s Technology teachers Mr Bohan, Mr Richards and Mr Brooks have embarked on a number of challenges. Their aim is to raise £6006.00 to help a new local charity, the Herefordshire Breast Cancer Support Group or HBCSG. The charity offers a wide range of support to help people in a safe and secure environment, during and after their diagnosis. The aim of the first challenge was to climb and descend Ben Nevis (1344 metres) in 6 hours. Mr Bohan was joined by three friends including a BHBS parent James Robinson. Further challenges have involved a number of parents and staff from BHBS, including a 60 mile bike ride in 6 hours with Mr Brooks and Mr Richards. It all culminated with Mr Bohan and Mr Richards competing in the International Blenheim Palace triathlon in September. To date they have raised over £3500.00 If you are interested in supporting or just want to read more about what they doing please go to the Herefordshire Breast Cancer Support Group GoFundMe page, https://gofund.me/a94fa638

Hannah loved her hair and losing it was very traumatic for her. Her parents, Wendy and Simon, searched high and low to find a wig suitable for Hannah, during her treatment. When they found one, it had a hugely positive effect on Hannah.

Light up a Life with St Michael’s Hospice
12 | TUPSLEY VOICE WINTER 2021
“Last year, because of the pandemic, we were unable to gather at Hereford Cathedral, so it’s particularly poignant that we can return there this time.”
Already live is the website of remembrance where dedications and photos of loved ones can be left as ‘lights’ serving as a lasting memory that shines on. Those leaving a dedication are invited to leave a donation to St Michael’s Hospice.
“Leaders are highly ambitious for pupils. They have thought carefully about what they want pupils to know, do and remember. Pupils relish the exciting opportunities offered. Visits to the school’s ‘immersion room’, provides pupils with sensory experiences linked to different topics. This brings their learning to life. Parents have nothing but praise for the headteacher and staff. They appreciate the care and support shown during the recent lockdown periods. They recognise and value the lengths staff go to in order to understand their children as individuals.
“Pupils’ behaviour is exemplary. Pupils are mature, polite and well mannered. They demonstrate high levels of care and consideration for each other and are very respectful to staff and visitors. They feel safe and are confident to report any concerns to staff.
People across Herefordshire and beyond are being invited to remember their loved ones with St Michael’s Hospice this festive period.

The Hospice is asking anyone planning on attending the Cathedral event to pre-register their attendance as it is often very popular.
The service will be screened live through the Hospice’s website thanks to Hospice supporters CJP Broadcast Service Solutions Ltd.
The Ofsted report states: “Pupils thrive, succeed and love being at school. This is shown in their regular attendance and exceptional attitudes to learning. They flourish socially, academically and emotionally due to the excellent standard of education and nurture that they receive.
This term at Hampton Dene Primary Forest School we have explored all things Autumn! Butterflies have enjoyed observing changes to the site from falling fir cones to colour changing leaves. We’ve used conkers to make bunting by drilling holes through their middles before threading onto twine; made elder bracelets; colourful leaf kebabs and crowns; and enjoyed lots of mud, bird spotting, flag making and construction. The children have also moved on from peelers to penknives and have done some super whittling.
St Francis Xavier’s RC Primary School was delighted to be judged ‘outstanding’ in their recent Ofsted Inspection that took place in September, 2021.
The headteacher, Mrs Diana Pearce, stated that it was a terrific result to have achieved and one that was richly deserved for the whole school community. ‘It is a privilege to be the headteacher of this inspirational school where the happiness and wellbeing of pupils is at the heart of school life.’

“Lighting a candle to commemorate a loved one is a very special thing to do, particularly at Christmas time.
The Bartestree-based Hospice has launched its Light up a Life celebrations, which culminates in a service at Hereford Cathedral the week before Christmas, on Sunday 19th December (5.30pm).
St Francis Xavier Judged “Outstanding”
To celebrate the end of term we enjoyed a spooky scavenger hunt, decorated pumpkin pebbles and designed some awesome ‘Autumn Pumpkin Creatures’, finishing with yummy toffee apples and popcorn around the fire in the tipi.
St Francis Xavier pupils show joy that their school has been judged “Outstanding”
As part of this, a Wall of Remembrance will be placed outside Hereford Cathedral featuring the names of the people St Michael’s supporters are remembering; a similar installation last year featured hundreds of names. They will also feature in a printed Book of Remembrance which can be viewed at the Light up a Life services.
“Light up a Life is always very special, with events filled with love and moments to remember,” said Jill Groves, the Hospice’s Lead Chaplain.
Light up a Life is an invitation to everyone in the community to shine a light in memory of those no longer with us at this poignant time of year. There is also the return of the Hospice’s popular Light up a Life online dedication page where anyone can shine a light in memory of a loved one.
