In October last year, inspired by the spirit of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore, 90-year-old Alan Blake of Hampton Park Road embarked on a fundraising project to boost the coffers of Parkinson’s UK, Burghill Parish Church and Rotary.

Alan has been a member of the City of Hereford Rotary Club for more than 50 years and has been supporting and caring for his wife who has had Parkinson’s for over two decades.

By completing each 120-step circuit of his steep garden on the banks of the River Wye, Alan would chalk off the equivalent of various local and international hills and mountain ranges.

To date, he has raised more than £22,000 for the causes dear to his heart.

Graham Phipps, a Tupsley resident, has recently released a book which is a memoir of his time working as a Herefordshire support worker. One day trying to make sense of a cheese and potato pie whilst residents waited patiently for their dinner, the next day playing golf with a man who pushed cheating to the limits. His scores always appeared to be very impressive.

Christmas Fayre Raises £635

I’m writing in February amid early signs of Spring, but looking forward of course to Easter and its full wonderful outburst – and all the more this year! As we emerge into a new normality, it seems important to fashion it with some of the painful lessons of the last two years. For me this includes learning to love and stay in touch even when we see less of another. More than ever, we’ve known and loved one another most by voice, with faces obscured or absent.

In our February Bible exploration, we’ve been aware of others under pressure – in the early followers of Jesus needing to be absolutely clear that they were not following a delusion, but a powerfully evidenced event of their Jesus: utterly dead… and then utterly alive two days later.

TupsleyVoice

It can best be described as humorous !

But for me a clincher comes with the first witness of Jesus’ resurrection (John 2011-18) being a woman at the bottom of the social latter. Such an account would never have been made up, as women then were not considered valid witnesses in court. And then it was Jesus’ voice calling Mary’s name which broke through her overwhelming grief and teers to face wonderful reality.

Thank You For My Edducasion !

The book can be purchased for £9.99 from:- the Hop Pocket Shopping Village, Ledbury Books and Maps, and Hereford Tourist Information, or can be ordered through Rossiter Books at Ross on Wye and Leominster.

Hampton Park URC Christmas Fayre raised £625 for its church funds despite having fewer stalls with tables spaced out. Thank you to everybody who helped or attended. A very good effort indeed that was no doubt welcomed by the church treasurer.

Easter Message: A voice that spans the years

Tony Bailey, a longtime Tupsley resident and member of St Paul’s Church, has produced a small book which details comments and reactions of children, teachers and parents during his 34 years as a teacher in Herefordshire.

And Happy Easter! Nick Armstrong

TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2022 | 3

For you and me, that dreadful cross tells of God’s enormous love for you, and that powerful resurrection tells of his power to help you – right now. And beyond all the evidence of history, that voice which spans the years also echoes back into all creation and whispers to us (especially when we pause long enough!), even as he spoke to Mary. May we all become better listeners.

It is a huge space to maintain, especially when the grass is growing fast during the Spring. The task of keeping the graveyard tidy would be much easier for those who volunteer if more people would be willing to join the team. The team currently work Tuesday and Thursday mornings each week.

10am St Paul’s. Joint act of worship then procession (with stops to sing and pray) to Hampton Park URC to complete the service.

Please consider joining the team for whatever hours you can spare, not necessarily every week; even just twice a month would be most useful. We have several well maintained lawn mowers, strimmers and other equipment for you to use.

We finish off at the Whitehouse for refreshments, we have also stopped in town, in a local pub or taken refreshments with us to picnic outside. Bartonsham History Group are planning to recreate this historic picture taken on Coronation Day 1953 during the Queens Jubilee Bank Holiday this June. The photograph was taken outside the Scout Hut at Scout Corner alongside the Eign Road/ Hampton Park Road railway bridge when over ninety mums, dads, children, grandparents and teddy bears gathered for a photo shoot in June 1953 when they were celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. They were holding a children’s party in Park Street for the Queen’s Coronation. But when it rained they beat a hasty retreat to Scout’s Corner.

The street party, organised with singing and dancing accompanied by a radiogram, was officially opened by Hereford United’s Charlie Thompson. Better weather is hoped for in June 2022.

Coronation Day – 1953 Were you there!

Bishop of Hereford Visits Bishop’s School

Early in February the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School was pleased to welcome the Bishop of Hereford, The Rt. Revd. Richard Jackson. The Bishop was given a tour of the school then met students from the school’s Christian Union. He was accompanied by the school Head Teacher, Martin Henton, and also by Heather Martin who provides valuable support from the Diocese for the school’s Christian Union. The Bishop explained how much he had enjoyed his visit and was impressed with the quality of learning and positive attitudes from all of the staff and students he met.

“We’re crossing our fingers for a good turn out,” says the History Group’s Bill Laws who was given the delightful photo by the late Derrick Blake. The History Group is hoping local organisations, schools, playgroups, nurseries, church and youth groups such as the Scouts, and anyone who was there in 1953, will pop along on the day. Some may now live in Tupsley.

It has been an exciting and colourful few months in the Aylestone library. Even with COVID restrictions the library crew and prefects have done some amazing displays. The Art Club’s hand-made red poppies and Mrs Wheater’s superb War Horse drawing of a Great War cavalryman and his horse commemorated Remembrance in November. A background of colourful leaves highlighted our Autumn poetry show, before coming down for the dark blues and silver of our Winter Reading display. At Christmas the library elves made long garlands out of recycled books and hung them in great swags over the Christmas tree. ‘Dark at Teatime’, the midwinter writing competition, was hugely popular with younger students. Their poems and short stories made a splendid exhibition – they all won house points and some of them won chocolates!

Exciting months in Aylestone School Library.

TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2022 | 7

Children at the school took part in a range of activities and workshops around the theme of ‘growing together’. Deputy Headteacher Mr Kay commented, ‘As a school we have always been focussed on supporting children with their mental health. The pandemic has been difficult for everyone and so recognising the impact mental health has on all of us –including children – is more important than ever.’

Love songs appeared on the library walls for Valentine’s Day, and World Book Day will be celebrated all through March with a huge display of new books – it’ll be more like World Book Month!

As part of mental health week children took part in a wide range of activities, which started with a whole school virtual assembly. These included designing hot air balloons to show the people in children’s lives who support them, taking part in yoga and other relaxation techniques, learning about internet safety and much, much more.

Mental Health Week –Broadlands School

In January the library remembered Holocaust Memorial Day with a display of letters and diaries, with a special focus on Anne Frank. The Winter Poetry display with its whites and silvers was the perfect complement. Then at the end of the month the library exploded with the reds and golds of Chinese New Year, with Chinese poetry on the walls and beautiful lanterns hanging from the ceiling.

In February, children at Broadlands Primary School took part in Children’s Mental Health Week. This is an annual event organised by Place2Be (a children’s mental health charity) designed to shine a spotlight on the importance of children and young people’s mental health.

Mr Kay continued, ‘Taking part in children’s mental health week allowed us to continue to raise the profile of mental wellbeing. The children loved taking part in the activities and we’ve had some brilliant feedback from them and their families.’

TupsleyVoice

The week culminated with a wear what you like day with the theme of ‘Express yourself’. Children were asked to make a voluntary donation as part of this with the proceeds going to Place2Be. To find out more about Place2Be including how to get support please visit www.Place2Be.org.uk

A service celebrating the life of Pamela Martin is to be held on Saturday 16th April at St Paul’s Church at 2.30pm. Pam lived in Tupsley, with her family, for 50 years. During that time she was an active member of the Church, helping out with tea and tots, Sunday School and later assisting in services taken to local care homes. She also worked at St Paul’s school and Hampton Park Church play group, while her children were young, before moving to work at the County PamHospital.passed away in May 2020 but due to Covid restrictions at the time the family were unable to hold a service for extended family and friends. They would dearly love to invite those who knew Pam to join them in celebrating her life. There will be a reception at Burghill Golf Club after the service and all are welcome. The family request that guests wear bright colours.

As a teenager, Pat attended the local Sunday School. It was there Pat met David Rawson and they were married in February 1962.

As a passionate and faithful Christian, Pat served in many different capacities at St Paul’s Church for over 50 years. She was an enthusiastic church warden, led the ‘Monday Bible Study Group’, served faithfully for several years as Lay Co-chair for the ‘Diocesan Synod’, and was on the committee for the ‘Women’s World Day of Prayer’. Pat was always joyfully involved in St Paul’s life- whether cleaning, giving home communion or leading prayer ministry. Recently she had been part of the ‘Open the Book’ team presenting Bible stories at Hampton Dene School.

Pat was a great hostess and loved cooking at home and in the community. Many enjoyed Sunday lunches at Pat and David’s home in Crownlea Close. She was part of the ‘Food on the Fifth’ team at St. Paul’s, helped serve monthly lunches at Hampton Bishop Village Hall, and worked in the ‘Tupsley Coffee Shop’ at Hampton Park Church.

Our District ‘Gang Show’ returns to the Courtyard during Easter Week (20th - 23rd April), so please support this fantastic display of youth talent! Tickets available from the Courtyard Box Office.

After a successful (if not reduced) turnout for our Hereford Scout Post 2021, we are pleased to annouce it will return in 2022!

Scouts Corner Updates!

When her boys started at school, Pat worked as a phlebotomist at the County Hospital, a job she held for 25 years.

Pat also willingly volunteered for many roles around Tupsley and the wider community. She was Akela of Tupsley Cubs, a school governor at Thomas Cantilupe Primary School and a volunteer receptionist at St. Michael’s Hospice for 35 years, getting an award in 2019.

Date for your diaries - Sunday 24th April, when Scouts and Guides (with all sections), will again be parading through our lovely town for our St George’s Day Celebration!

Pat Rawson – A life of service to the Community

For Her Majesty’s Celebrations this year, Scouts have been invited to light the Churchill Gardens Beacon on Thursday 2nd June @ 9.15pm!

We had great fun at Bright Sparks just before the Christmas break when we raised funds for St. Michaels Hospice by taking part in their yearly Rudolph Run! Our little Rudolph’s ran every day around our playground for one whole week and raised £249.39, but combined with everyone else whom took part around Herefordshire, an amazing £40,855 was raised for such an amazing charity. Thank you to all of you that donated. Together we can make a difference.

Soon after, Pat and David moved to Bodmin, Cornwall where their eldest son, Martyn was born in 1964. After moving to Hereford, younger son, Jonathan was born in 1966. The young family lived in Whittern Way and whilst there Pat helped start ‘The Good News Club’ at Broadlands School (later becoming a ‘Crusader’ class). Pat was invited in the 1970’s to help with a new ‘Sunday School’ at St. Paul’s Church. Later she became part of the leadership of the ‘Genesis’ youth group.

Patricia Melrose Rawson (nee Ellis) was born on the 11th July, 1942. She grew up with her younger sister, Diana in Balham, London. On leaving school in Battersea in the late 1950s, Pat worked for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in London.

On Christmas Eve 2021, Pat Rawson sadly died after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. A Thanksgiving Service was held at St. Paul’s Church on Saturday 22nd January following a Committal Service at Hereford Crematorium.

Pat will be greatly missed by David, Martyn and Jonathan, daughters-in-law Caroline and Ruth, and her 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. For her 79th birthday last July, one of her granddaughters sent her a plaque. It fittingly said: - “The best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been & the memories we’ve made along the way.” Alleluia for the life of Pat Rawson.

Do you have twins, especially under school-age? Hereford Twins Club is part of the TAMBA (Twins and Multiple Birth Association) umbrella organisation and is a great way to meet other twin families for an exchange of experiences, tips and equipment. An informal group for pre-school-age twins and their carers used to meet on Fridays at St. John’s Methodist Church in St. Owen Street but as we claw our way back to normality since the pandemic it is meeting there on Tuesdays in term-time, in combination with the Tots group.

Hereford Cathedral School welcomed St Paul’s Church of England Primary School, Gorsley Goffs Primary School, Bishop Hooper Primary School, Mordiford Primary School and the Hereford Academy who joined Hereford Cathedral School’s junior and senior choirs as part of the music outreach programme. The children sang a selection of traditional hymns and carols to create a service. Their aim was to bring festive joy to the Herefordshire community this Christmas.

Herefordshire Primary Schools Form A Big Christmas Choir

During the Climbing activity, I climbed to the first line (which was high) while others reached the very top! Caving was fun despite getting stuck in a very narrow tunnel. I enjoyed playing hide and seek amongst the tunnels. The Leap Of Faith involved climbing a vertical totem pole, standing on the top and taking a huge jump to try and catch a trapeze. The instructors at the Pioneer Centre encouraged us all to be brave, determined and to persevere to do our best. We enjoyed the comfortable en-suite rooms, having fun with our friends and fabulous food on offer during our three days.’

On Saturday 29th January, the Hampton Dene School tag rugby children and teachers set off on a bus to Worcester Warriors. We first went for a Questions & Answers session with Jack and Akina who are Worcester Warriors players. We then met two coaches, Frankie and Lynsey, who gave us a training session on the first team training pitch.

After the training session, we took to the field and were the Guard of Honour as the teams entered the field. We all agreed that the first half was decent but it was very stop start. The final result was 13-29 to Northampton. Even though Worcester lost we still had lots of fun! However, the most exciting part was being able to play on the pitch at half-time in front of 9000 fans.

Hundreds of children from Herefordshire primary schools gathered in Hereford Cathedral on December 3 to sing in the cathedral school’s combined carol service.

Other activities at the Pioneer Centre included: Archery, Zipwire, Big Bounce and songs and games around a campfire. Everyone had a wonderful time and returned home exhausted but full of amazing memories and stories to tell their families.

‘Soon after we arrived, my first activity was High Ropes. I thought I was determined so marched right in. Turns out, I was more scared than I suspected. I began to climb but froze on the spot. My friends cheered me on so I wasn’t petrified anymore. I managed to do the Trek Course independently although I had a little help from the instructors.

On Wednesday 26th January, pupils in Year 5 and 6, travelled to the Pioneer Centre in Cleobury Mortimer for a three-day residential trip. 120 pupils and staff experienced a variety of thrilling and adventurous activities. Year 6 pupils, Ethan and Taliah recall their highlights:
