since. The sound system and Clavinova piano are brought outside, and together with guitar(s), flute, cornet and soloist, music to accompany the singing is created for the congregation to sing to. It has been a delight to be able to sit in the sunshine and hear the birds singing in the trees. We have been able to have outdoor services virtually every week since Easter, though the cold late April and May weather meant we all had to wrap up well. Fortunately the rain kept away at the crucial times. Outdoor services are set to continue at 10:00am every Sunday morning at least until the end of July. Prerecorded services for those who cannot or are still wary of venturing out while the virus is still in circulation are also planned to continue for the time being. Do Come along, all are welcome!

Very understandable, as so many of us have experienced sadness, pain, anxiety, or multiple disappointment through the pandemic’s effects. Only today, we heard of a very dear friend in Nepal finally dying from COVID after the painful struggle.

‘Back Normal?’to
Living here amongst so many signs of God’s hope and love has been a blessing. Whether it’s the care and beauty at St Michael’s hospice, the sounds of Hampton Dene and St Paul’s children playing, the dedication of our brilliant head teachers leading passionate, hard-working staff, the resilience of Hampton Bishop residents, the faithfulness of the congregations at St Paul’s and St Andrew’s, the beauty of Autumn in the Quarry and the hills rising in the distance: there are signs of that hope.
The thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
That we can be secure on God’s enormous love is one that I’m privileged to share at baptisms, weddings, funerals, at primary schools with hundreds of children and with over 1,000 young people at Bishop’s where I have loved being Chaplain. It may be the first time someone has heard it, or it may be that I’m standing alongside those who already live with that hope in their hearts.
Rev Preb Nick Armstrong Vicar of Tupsley & Hampton Bishop
One lyric from ‘O Holy Night’ keeps coming up in my internet searches. It resonates with me as I ponder my time here as Curate at St Paul’s with St Andrew’s.
God is for you. The world may be weary, times may be uncertain, but there is a thrill of hope. May you experience something of that hope today and each day going forward, and may you be a carrier of that hope for others.
Over the last 15 months, all sorts of new words and phrases have become reluctantly familiar. But it’s this quite ordinary expression that has strangely hit me most. ‘Hopefully soon things will be back to normal.’
Revd Rachel
It’s only October as I write, but in an attempt to be organised, I’ve been searching for Christmas cards. This year they will double up as ‘Change of Address’ cards as shortly I move roles to become Vicar of GK church in Kent.
TupsleyVoice
So, returning to the old ‘normal’ can easily be as far as we can see. But looking more carefully: actually the old normal was pretty crummy for many – as alerts such as the environmental crisis and Black Lives Matter have highlighted. So I want to vote instead for Back to Better.
Revd Rachel Robertson, Assistant Curate at St Paul’s Church, Tupsley with St Andrew’s Church, Hampton Bishop since July 2017, and later also Chaplain at Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School, completed her training and was appointed from December 2020 as Vicar of St Mary’s Goudhurst, Kent, with Christ Church Kilndown in the Diocese of Canterbury. Rachel wrote the following for Tupsley Voice before she departed to Kent:-

TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2021 | 3
Over this time, I keep spotting aspects of our Status Quo which somehow the busyness of life prevented us from questioning enough to say first: ‘It could be different’; and then: ‘it can be different.’ Starting with the way I prioritise my day… through the way we do church… all the way to how we make big decisions about community, the world, justice… Decisions about people distant in miles, or in years – the generations to come.
The thrill of hope for me is that God exists and that God absolutely loves each of us. Always.
So that’s my prayer: that as we emerge in the years ahead from this tough time, we manage to choose Back to Better. May God help us choose well.

As Spring came and went, the members and friends of Hampton Park United Reformed Church were unable to give a proper thank you and goodbye to two people who have worked tirelessly for the church for many years. Our minister, Rev Martin Hardy retired in March and our legendary secretary, Joyce Busby, moved to live with her family in Leicestershire at the beginning of April. Joyce also worked tirelessly for very many years from 1976, as the first editor of Tupsley Voice (originally called Tupsley Community Newspaper).

Hereford Sixth Form College’s applicants for Medicine have yet again secured an outstanding number of offers from medical schools, with 80% of our 25 students applying for Medicine for 2021 receiving one or more offers, including three with offers from Oxford or Cambridge, a record achievement! This far exceeds national statistics for applicants of Medicine, where on average across all UK medical schools there are 10 applicants for every place available.
Peter Cooper, Principal of Hereford Sixth Form College, is extremely proud of the students’ success; “In these challenging times, it is a delight to witness the achievement of our students in so many ways and in so many fields. The College has a strong record of offers for Medicine over the years and it is highly satisfying that this has continued, despite the considerable obstacles that everyone has faced. Our standards continue to be as high as possible and throughout this difficult time [with lockdown] we have merely adapted our approach. The students have responded magnificently and the Medicine and Oxbridge success, as well as that of our general university entries and apprenticeships, demonstrate this clearly. Well done to the students and staff!”

The Group’s main remit is to stage the Picnic in the Park at Tupsley Quarry each July and the Quarry Fireworks in November. While the grading given to a school cannot change as a result of a monitoring inspection, the report sent to Broadlands following the virtual visit concluded that the school has been taking effective action to provide education for its children in the current circumstances, despite the many challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking about the Ofsted report, Mr Robertson said: “The past 12 months have been difficult for everyone and in schools it has been no different. We have faced up to unique challenges and I am incredibly proud of how staff at the three schools in our federation – Broadlands Primary, Withington Primary and Aylestone – have responded to all of them.

A slow reduction of volunteers over recent years has resulted in the numbers in the two teams reducing to less than a comfortable minimum in order to maintain the graveyard in the condition that it needs to be. The teams currently meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, but the days could be changed, or possibly changed to a summer evening. Weekly attendance is not essential. Outside Festival Displays at Tupsley Church much admired
Christmas was therefore celebrated with a display outside the church door of Shepherds and sheep, a Manger, Angels, Wise Men and a Christmas Wreath. Easter was then celebrated with an outside Cross, Easter Garden with Tomb and an Easter Wreath. Finally Penticost with a Cloud, Dove and Flames on the Cross.
The displays were much admired by many adults and children from St Pauls Nursery and St Pauls Primary School, as well as the church. They were planned and assembled by the Verger, Pam Pratley, who was greatly helped by many members of the congregation and the community contributing materials and their craftwork skills.
COFFEE SHOP OPENING
A year later I began training as a Lay Reader and was licensed to St Paul’s Tupsley and St Andrew’s Hampton Bishop on 17 October last year. Over the period of my training, I have enjoyed the opportunity to become involved in the life of the church and look forward to continuing that over the years to come. In addition to my role within the church, helping to preach and lead worship, I am also the Chair of Trustees of St Paul’s Childcare, an Outstanding provider of Nursery, Breakfast and After School care for the children of the area. This has been a great way to get to know more people and to feel part of the Tupsley community and I am hoping that when life becomes more ‘normal’ there will be opportunities for me to become involved with other activities and events. Education and creativity are two of my particular interests and I look forward to being able to explore ways in which I can contribute to the life of the parish in these particular areas.
Despite all the churches being closed during the 3rd Covid lockdown from before Christmas until after Easter, St Pauls Church was determined that the special festivals of Christmas, Easter and Penticost should be celebrated by the congregation and the community that passed through the churchyard to and from the schools or the graveyard.

Well, what a year it has been! We now seem to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. So, we are hoping to open up the Coffee Shop again on Wednesday, July 7th. We are busy planning so that we can meet safely again. Hopefully by July we will be well on our way to being back to normal. There will be a few changes - depending on what Boris says- a set number at tables, bringing your cup which you were given at Christmas, putting your money in a bowl at the door. We will be using both rooms but not the lobby.
Deborah Hartland has been appointed as the new lay reader at St Pauls Church following the retirement of Ray Walters who then later sadly passed away on 13 Sep 2019 after being lay reader for very many years. Deborah has written the following to introduce herself:-

Amelia, Chloe and Olivia – in Year 5 at Hampton Dene Primary – organised a charity day in school to raise money for Cancer Research. The theme of the day was to wear bright clothes – for a donation – and the trio kindly donated prizes for the best dressed child from each class on the day. The girls worked exceptionally hard to co-ordinate the day and many hours of preparation were put in to the event! In total, the day raised £252 and the girls received a letter of thanks from the charity. It was wonderful to see the girls work so hard for a superb cause and they should be exceptionally proud of their efforts.

His service to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, which also included being an assessor of other D of E groups, was recognised by the presentation of a framed certificate by Prince Philip at St James Palace.
Keith had boundless energy, enthusiasm and complete dedication to the Hereford Sixth Form College Gold Club that he created in 1986. By day he was an extremely knowledgeable and well respected horticultural advisor at the then Ministry of Agriculture offices at Litley Court in Hampton Park Road. He was similarly dedicated to his job and his horticultural advice was much valued by the fruit and hop growing industry in Herefordshire and beyond. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him; especially the College students and horticulturalists who were greatly helped by his advice and dedication.

Well done, Doris, we think you are truly amazing giving your time and talent to a great cause.
Tupsley resident, Keith Worsley, who voluntarily led and trained hundreds of Hereford Sixth Form College students to undertake their rigorous 50 mile, 4 day camping, Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award mountain walking expedition, for 19 years between 1986 and 2005, sadly passed away in 2020. He had battled with Alzheimer’s dementia for the last few years of his life. Then, following a bowel cancer operation and further abdominal surgery, he contracted a chest infection and finally coronavirus. He was aged 82 when he died, leaving his wife Ann, four children and eight grandchildren. He was also a very regular member of St Paul’s Church congregation.
Knitting daily keeps Doris fit and the following of patterns and counting rows is keeping her mind active.

Doris has knitted for 92 years since the age of four! Taught by her father, he, she and her sibling would all knit in the shelter by candle light during the Second World War using wool that was donated by the service women for them to knit for the soldiers.
Doris stepped up to the challenge and has been knitting for the Neonatal Unit in Kingston Hospital Surrey, where her great granddaughter works as a nurse, ever since she learnt there was a shortage of premature baby clothes.

Members also stayed connected through physical activities which included walks at local Country Parks, visiting Mole Hall at Haywood, the reading seat at Queenswood, the iron-age hill fort at Credenhill, sunny Sutton Lakes and the autumn colours of Haugh Woods.
So, from the bottom of our hearts, we say thank you to an amazing Chairman, Community Leader and friend to our Tupsley community, and our thanks also go out to Anita for being so supportive. When we are able, we will be having an evening of thanksgiving for everything Keith has brought to the Whitehouse and the local Community. Covid -19 has made it very difficult to make opening plans for the Whitehouse. We have already resumed our Monday afternoon Community Walks, leaving the Whitehouse at 2pm, voluntary building works, collecting for the Hereford Food Bank on Friday ‘s 2pm until 4pm and essential counselling sessions. We will shortly be opening on Wednesday afternoons at 2pm for Community Teas. There are also plans afoot for a children’s dance class and gentle adult exercise.
We will continue with outdoor meetings throughout the summer and resume meetings at St John’s on 13th September. New members are always welcome, please contact our Secretary Hilary Ellis on 01432 354122.
The service is being run by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust and they are keen to work with local families to help develop a new name and logo for the service, ready for its more formal launch later in the year. If you are keen to contribute contact whcnhs.communications@nhs.net’
The Women’s Institute are renowned for overcoming adversity and we did just that in continuing to mark our centenary year despite Covid19 restrictions and lockdowns. This is reflected in our centenary photograph album which also tells the story of SocialCovid19.media gave members a new way of staying in touch by using zoom for meetings and book club, while staying safe. Federation also reached out to members by organising a variety of online events and talks for everyone to enjoy.
Aylestone school is pleased to be the Herefordshire school host for the new Mental Health Practitioners in School programme. This is a new initiative, but an increasingly important one.
We are supporting and hosting a Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner - Ellie Todd through her initial training. Ellie works as part of the NHS Mental Health Support in Schools Team. There are three main parts to her role: Whole School Approach to Mental Health, Consultations and 1:1 work with students, using Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Interventions.
The long standing extremely active Chairman of Whitehouse Hub, Keith Davenport has stood down from his post so that he can be freed to enjoy his retirement more fully with his wife Anita. He is not leaving the project though, as he will continue to coordinate the renovations and the maintenance of the building. We have been extremely grateful for Keith’s skills in Management and bringing a once unusable and almost derelict building into a condition that has meant the local community has been able to hold functions safely. This has not been an easy task as we have had to battle against bureaucracy on many occasions. However, along with our band of wonderful volunteers, he has already enabled us to combat a significant amount of Social Isolation in the area and provide a space where other community activities have and will come into fruition.
Another coping mechanism members used during lockdown was engagement with the arts, culture and reading. Puzzles were made and remade, crafty ladies crafted, nimble fingers knitted, and we had time to read all those books that had evaded us for so long.

Unbeknown to the local community Keith has dedicated hundreds of hours to the Whitehouse Hub Board, City and County Council meetings, planning and various community meetings, as well as the renovations. He has been involved in encouraging voluntary work, fund raising, facilitating courses, arranging Board meetings, writing policies, helping families in need and supervising young people on Nationally recognised work placement qualifications; and many other activities. Aside from his skills, he has blessed us with his patience, caring nature, time, energy, generosity, humility and his fun loving nature.
One of the achievements we are most proud of at the Whitehouse is Keith and Anita’s ability to help bring together a diverse group of volunteers which has created a supportive family atmosphere and a sense of belonging. At the end of the day, this is what building and being a community is all about !

Ellie has been in Aylestone since the start of March, and began with an analysis of what the school currently does, and what our students’ needs are. She has settled in really well and is enjoying getting to grips with life in a busy school setting, working hand in hand with school staff and external agencies who support our students, parents and pupils.

No job too big – no job too small
Getting in touch
The pupils were then invited to produce a written entry, poster or video which outlined jobs that interested them, what skills they might need and how school and education can help individuals to make their dreams come true.
The ‘Just The Job’ project is an exciting new initiative in conjunction with the High Sheriff of Herefordshire and Herefordshire Business Board.
Val always enjoyed the company of others - both family and friends. She embraced every opportunity that came her way and she is undoubtedly continuing to do so in the next world. She is greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and no doubt by many other people in Tupsley.
Val Twigg, a well known and much loved Tupsley name and face, died peacefully in September 2020 aged 91. Her funeral was held at Hereford Crematorium and was for immediate family only due to Covid restrictions.
Mrs H. Yarnold and Mrs J. Yates Y6 Class teachers
The project encourages pupils to think about the type of job they would like to do when they are older. To think about the kind of subjects they like at school, what kind of skills they already have, and what they need. It is aimed at engaging all pupils to give them an opportunity to unlock their character, talents and personality traits, so that every pupil really does have opportunities to aspire to.
In her later life she became involved in all sorts of local community activities including: Church coffee mornings, Scrabble with friends, Rambling, HARA and the Trefoil Guild.
Extremely Active Tupsley Resident Dies Peacefully
The project included pupils interviewing family members and business-people in order to learn more about the world of work from architects, chefs, doctors, fire fighters to midwives and professional footballers!
Val moved from Barnet to Hereford in the early 1950’s to take up a teaching post at the Cathedral Prep School. Marriage to husband Mike and four children soon followed. A few years later, Val’s involvement in Girl Guiding began when she first became Brown Owl and then subsequently took over as ‘Skip’ of 3rd Hereford Guides based at Wellington Place - later becoming District Commissioner. There are certainly many still around Tupsley who can vividly remember their experiences of spring and summer camps in places such as Capel-y-ffin, Felindre, and Saundersfoot, to name just a few. Not very exotic but Val loved it!
As a result the Year 6 pupils at St. Paul’s were delighted to receive an award of £2000 for the school for the best entries overall in the ‘Just The Job’ project, plus voucher prizes for individual pupils. The school is extremely proud of its Life Skills curriculum and we look forward to putting the money towards career related and life skills activities.
TupsleyVoice
Once Val and Mike’s youngest started school, she involved herself in the early days of St Paul’s Nursery School, where she worked for many years. She still enjoyed her connection with the Nursery through visits from the children to Hampton House Residential Care home, where she spent her last few years.
Well done Year 6!
Val was for over 25 years an active member of Tupsley Townswomen Guild, rising to chairperson. Way back in 1988, Val represented Tupsley in a national competition to celebrate 60 years of the Guild, and her beautiful tapestry was chosen to be part of their Diamond Jubilee display. A proud moment for her. She always kept herself busy and when members of St. Paul’s Church were making new church kneelers. Val stepped in to help, assisting others, making several of her own and encouraging others to make one, until 100 were made.
St. Paul’s Primary Pupils study future careers
12 | TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2021
It’s never too early to start thinking about how education can prepare students for the world of work. Pupils at St. Paul’s C of E Primary School have been celebrating wonderful success with an exciting new initiative.
‘Just The Job’ aims to get Year 6 and Year 7 pupils thinking about the type of job they might like to do when they are older. It’s never too early to lodge the message that school is so important to children’s long-term prospects.
