Women raking hay on Lugg Meadow – Image taken by Alfred Watkins circa 1900

Lugg Meadows Tupsley’s Precious Jewel Sometimes shrouded in damp mists, other times transformed into a glistening lake, inundated by the River Lugg; dotted with jewellike blooms in spring and turned golden with a flood of buttercups in summer: the Lugg Meadow is rather more than a convenient spot for walking the family dog. Rather, this meadow is a timeless treasure, at once a portal to the social and natural history of the medieval age and yet also an integral landscape for Tupsley’s community today, a space for agriculture, leisure and education and nationally important for wildlife. A parcel of the flood plain of the River Lugg, this 330 acre meadow is the largest surviving Lammas meadow in the country and one of only fourteen. A Lammas meadow is one where commoners have rights to graze the land from Lammas Day on 2nd August to

Candlemas on 2nd February. Livestock are then shut off from the land to allow the owners to take a hay crop. On Lugg Meadow the hay is allocated in strips marked with dole stones. Around 90 dole stones still stand in the meadow and are marked with a name, or initials, and date. This system has existed on Lugg Meadow for nearly 1,000 years. The most well-known and loved of the meadow’s flora and fauna are the snake’s head fritillaries (Fritillaria meleagris) which flower in April and May. Usually a beautiful chequered purple flower, many of the fritillaries on Lugg Meadow are white which is a rare sight. The fritillary is found on traditionally managed flood-plain meadows and though nationally rare, can be abundant locally. Only a few sites in the UK are considered to hold wild populations, although many other sites have had plants introduced.

Each year, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, who own and manage areas of the meadow, holds a Fritillary Day to celebrate this special wildflower, this year Saturday 22nd April, from 10am to 2pm. Do come along to learn more about the meadow, its history and the beautiful fritillaries. The Trust is also collaborating with the Floodplain Meadow Partnership to survey the flowers each year so we can better understand, and conserve, this important part of our natural history. See articles page 3 about both events). One of the meadow’s other specialities is narrow-leaved water dropwort. Easily mistaken for the much commoner cow parsley, it is in fact a remarkably rare floodplain plant and Lugg Meadow supports the best population in the county. The meadow also provides a place for recreation and learning for people from across

Hereford but especially from Tupsley – a vast and glorious open space! It is fantastic for people of all ages to have such a wonderful place to explore nature. As well as the snake’s head fritillaries, Lady’s smock also flowers prolifically here in early summer before the meadow is overtaken by swathes of golden buttercups. Orange tip butterflies are seen in the meadow from April while banded demoiselle damselflies fly near to the river banks. Curlew arrive at the meadow in early spring though sadly only a few pairs now breed here. Listen out for their distinctive, bubbling call. While you may not be lucky enough to see an otter, you may well see paw prints or spraints by the river banks as the Lugg is a favoured habitat. It is important that we look after this wonderful site as it is a piece of living history and Continued Page 3

Continued Front page part of our natural heritage. It is just as important, however, that we look after it for each other. Leaving litter and dog mess mean the meadows become hazardous for children to play; dog faeces in the hay crop make it unsaleable and dogs which are not under close control can startle children, worry livestock and are one cause for the severe decline of wetland birds breeding on the meadow. Please help us to keep the meadow special for this generation and the next. For more information about Lugg Meadow contact Herefordshire Wildlife Trust: enquiries@herefordshirewt. co.uk 01432 356872 or drop in and see us at Lower House farm, on the edge of Lugg Meadow. Wanted – Your memories of Tupsley past Tupsley Voice would VERY MUCH like to print any memories that you have of Tupsley more than (say)40 years ago. The longer ago the better. Memories of events; fields before houses were built on them; the Quarry when the brickworks buildings were still there; Tupsley Hospital; wartime; school; street parties; transport; personalities etc. Importantly if you have any old photographs that we might borrow to scan and possibly print they would be priceless. All valuable documents will be carefully safeguarded, copied and quickly returned. If you have anything or would merely like to talk about your memories, that can be arranged. Please contact

Tupsley Voice by ringing the Editor (Tel: 01432 357 770) or E mail: tupsleyvoice@ hotmail.co.uk or write to The Editor, Tupsley Voice c/o Parish Office, St Paul’s Church Community Centre, Church Road, Tupsley, Hereford, HR1 1RT.

Help us Survey the fritillaries HWT and the Floodplain Meadows Partnership will also be surveying the fritillaries for the sixth year running. This is part of a national project which is looking at fritillaries on a number of important f loodplain sites. Please come and help us count the fritillaries on the Lugg Meadow. If you are interested in taking part please email Emma Rothero at emma.rothero@ open.ac.uk for further details. No previous experience is required

Lugg Meadows Fritillary Day Sat 22 April; 10am-2pm The Lugg Meadows Fritillary day will consist of a series of Guided walks each lasting approximately 1.5 hours. There will be tea, coffee and cakes, a pop up shop, plant stall and children’s activities at Lower House Farm during the day – more details of the day below. Herefordshire Wildlife Trust (HWT) staff and volunteers will lead guided walks of the rich array of wildflowers and in particular, the nationally rare snake’s head fritillaries which grow on the Lugg meadow and talk about the history and wildlife that make this nature reserve unique. The first walk will

depart between 10.15am and 10.30am and then roughly every half hour with the last one leaving at 12.30pm. There will also be WildPlay activities on offer for children in the garden planting fritillaries, making bee crafts, playing pollination games and pond dipping. Venue: Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Tupsley, Hereford HR1 1UT. Directions: A438 out of Hereford turn left opposite the Cock of Tupsley (signpostedHerefordshire Nature Trust). Lower House Farm is the 17th Century black and white farm house down the lane. Grid ref: SO 536 404. Cost: £5.00 per adult. Children up to 14yr go free. Host a foreign student for a weekend Offer your hand for international friendship! Welcome an adult international student into your home for a day or weekend and do your bit to make the world a little friendlier. Many adult international students from across the world would love to spend a few days with you, learning about British culture, experiencing UK home-life, and telling you about their own country. A visit is also a fantastic opportunity for you to learn about a different culture and country from the comfort of your own home. A Christmas invitation is particularly valuable to students facing a holiday on an empty university campus. Japanese student, Mamiko Moda, wrote “Thanks to my hosts and their kindness, I could spend a nice Christmas here instead of staying at home alone. I am grateful to you all.” Herefordshire host, Punitha Westall wrote “The best part of being hosts is the meeting and getting to know people from other parts of the world. It’s great fun learning about other cultures and something of the language.”

Pioneer Centre Visit late Jan Year 5 from St Paul’s school had an absolutely wonderful adventure at the Pioneer Centre in January. They completed many challenging activities and had such fun!

What is Alpha? Alpha is a series of sessions with an option of an away day exploring the Christian faith. An Alpha generally has three key things in common: food, a video/talk and good conversation. First, there’s food. Each session starts with food because it’s a great way to get to know each other. At St Paul’s this will be some kind of desert. Then a video/talk. These are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Usually around thirty minutes long they explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions from “Who is Jesus?” and “How can we have faith?” to “Why and how do I pray?” and “How does God guide us?” Followed by discussion. This is probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts, ask any questions and simply discuss it in a small group. There’s no obligation to say anything and there’s nothing you can’t say. “Finding a simple faith that empowers my life? To me, that’s been my greatest adventure.” Bear Grylls Over the past few years Bear Grylls has become the embodiment of adventure and outdoor survival in the public imagination. As well as being an adventurer, writer and television presenter, Bear is a former guest on Alpha. Despite a life characterised by risk, danger and the unknown, it is this exploration of faith that he describes as his ‘greatest adventure’. Alpha at St Paul’s, Tupsley Alpha at St Paul’s, Tupsley, starting on Monday 6th March, will be a series of ten sessions with the option of an away day exploring the Christian faith. Each session will start with desert, a short video/talk about a different question around faith. This will be followed by discussion where you can share your thoughts and ask any questions if you want. Each week is independent of each other so if you do not get to the first session or are unable to attend every session you will not be disadvantaged.

Hosting is a voluntary position suitable for all ages and is available throughout the year with HOST, a charity set up in 1987. To find out more or be put in touch with your local organiser, please visit www. hostuk.org, or call 020 7739 6292. TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2017 | 5

TupsleyVoice St Pauls School News: Chess Club St Paul’s School Chess club have entered the DeLancey Chess Challenge again and have been taking part in it from January. The children are excited and looking forward to earning badges, gold spots and mascots for every game that they will play - all against different players in the school chess club. They expect the 7 rounds to take most of this Spring term. Dr Richard Miller

Hospice founder becomes its first Lifetime Patron One of the founder members of Herefordshire’s only Hospice, St Michael’s, has been appointed the charity’s first ever Lifetime Patron. Richard Miller played an integral part in setting up the Hospice in 1984. A former GP, and Trustee at the Bartestree-based Hospice, his dedication to the charity was recognised during its AGM when the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Alister Walshe, presented him with the inaugural honour. ‘I was very proud and quite humbled,’ said Richard. ‘It’s a fantastic privilege’. But said it is those Hospice staff on the frontline who ‘make it what it is’. He said he came up with the idea for a hospice while in general practice in Hereford at a time when there was little understanding of symptom control, and people often died in pain. Someone who shared his vision was the late Freda Pearce who was also instrumental in establishing St Michael’s. ‘I first met up with Freda in 1979 but I had been very interested in the hospice idea before that,’ he said, ‘I thought it would be wonderful if Herefordshire had one. I’m absolutely gobsmacked at what it has become. So many people have been touched by St Michael’s over the years. Barely a week goes by when someone tells me how they or someone they know has been affected by the Hospice in a good way.’

School Receives Silver Games Mark In January pupils Grace and Barty, represented St Paul’s School as Sports Leaders at the Herefordshire School Games Kitemark Award Ceremony hosted by Whitecross High School. This is a National award for school sports and St Pauls school was delighted to receive the Silver Games Mark. At St Pauls we strive to provide opportunities for all children to participate in a wide range of activities during the PE curriculum, as well as offering variety in the after school clubs available. During the past year, we have focussed on the development of young leaders in KS2 which has increased greatly the confidence of many pupils at St Paul’s. Grace and Barty were presented with the Silver Games Mark Award for the school by Millie Boucher and Joe Beckingsale, both national competitors for Wales, who currently attend Hereford Sixth Form College. School Music Team Meet Julian Lloyd-Webber The St Paul’s School music team met Professor Julian LloydWebber at the Herefordshire music conference in January. Lots of ideas to take back to school! Minibus Drivers Wanted Calling all Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles! We are always looking for volunteers to drive our minibus. We like to be able to take groups of children out on special visits and educational sessions around our beautiful county but we are often short of a driver. If you are interested in helping in this way please come along and talk to Mr Teale or Mrs McEnery.

Quiz & Chips

Also honoured during the AGM was the Hospice’s Head of Facilities, Stephen Rabbitts, who was presented with the Freda Pearce Award which recognises a staff member who has made a difference to the organisation, and shown energy, drive and commitment to make an idea a success.

Come and have some fun answering questions with friends & eating fish or curry & chips.

TupsleyVoice Spring into Life Good News travels fast. You may even have heard ours – that we became Grandparents a few weeks back. Archie Samuel begins a new generation in our family. His life is a new life – full of promise, discovery and exploration. And yes we’re annoyingly excited! But his dad Tim is our tiny first baby, born I’d swear no more than five years ago! And as we happily re-enter the world of feeding and nappy changing, generations are to me compressed into days, and I see Archie within a month married and giving birth to Tim & Jenny’s grandchild… Happily of course things will move more slowly, but it’s all made me freshly aware that life is full of potential, change, adventure and risk – and especially Hope. As crocus and daffodil again break cover, in just over a month comes the time when many around the world retrace first century events as the movement of a strange and wonderful Rabbi carpenter from ‘up north’ burst into capital city Jerusalem… and then all seemed to go horribly wrong. The shock of his execution was invaded by stunning rumours – and then by hundreds of witnesses… leading to the birth of a movement, the total transformation of world events, and even the Tupsley Voice! All because Jesus broke through death, and is alive! I wonder whether you’ve ever stopped to look into these events, or the strong evidence for them; and for the claims of the carpenter Jesus. Evidence which a former Chief Justice of England, Lord Darling, described as ‘overwhelming’.

Whatever age we are, our lives still have promise, discovery and exploration. TupsleyVoice Oxbridge Success Still Above National Average at Hereford Sixth Form College Hereford Sixth Form College has enjoyed another successful year for Oxford and Cambridge applications as students received a total of ten offers covering a wide variety of degree courses (six from Oxford and four from Cambridge). Students have benefitted from enhanced preparation thanks to the Cambridge sponsored HE+ programme, Oxford Pathways and other initiatives which offer extension classes, masterclasses from visiting lecturers and the chance to visit both cities. The following students have been offered places at the University of Oxford: Grace Davis (Llandrindod High School) – Philosophy, Politics and Economics – Hertford College Cara Exall (Millais School, Horsham) – Philosophy, Politics and Economics – Wadham College Dora Grasby (Hereford Cathedral School) – Japanese – St Anne’s College Cecilia (Biddy) Hyde (Chase High School) – Chemistry – Wadham College Will Thomson (Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School) – Music – Merton College Charles Wellings (Monmouth School) – English – Brasenose College The following students have been offered places at the University of Cambridge: Ieuan Best (Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw) – Human, Social and Political Sciences – Sidney Sussex College Savannah Dixon (Hereford Cathedral School) – Engineering – Trinity College Oran Johnson (Wigmore High School) – Music – Selwyn College Sam Spedding (Wigmore High School) – Mathematics – Pembroke College Ieuan Best who will be reading Human, Social and Political Sciences at Cambridge said, “Receiving the offer to study at Cambridge gave me an incredible feeling which I could never have anticipated. I’ve had amazing support from the tutors every step of the way, from inspiring me to apply in the first place to helping me get ready for the interview.” Jonathan Godfrey, Principal said, “I am pleased such a large number of students have been offered places. The application to offer ratio at the College is well above the national average, reflecting the excellence of teaching and the support given to our most able students. The breadth of subjects covering the arts, social sciences and science is very pleasing. Special congratulations should go to the Music Department, following a student being offered a choral scholarship at Queen’s College, Oxford last year, two more students have gained places this year.”

Peter Cooper, who will take up the reins as Principal of Hereford Sixth Form College

Hereford Sixth Form College Appoints Next Principal Hereford Sixth Form College has appointed Peter Cooper, the current Deputy, as the Principal Designate to succeed Jonathan Godfrey when he leaves the College next August. Mr Cooper, a Chemistry graduate from Nottingham University, worked in Kenilworth High School and Priestley College, Warrington prior to arriving at Hereford in 1998. Chair of Governors, Dr Ken Hopkins said, “Peter was selected from a large field of very strong candidates, following rigorous interviews over two days. His record as an outstanding Deputy makes him an ideal person to maintain the achievements of this most successful of colleges and to meet the challenges it may face in the future.” Jonathan Godfrey said, “I was absolutely delighted that Peter has been appointed. The national reputation the College enjoys for the excellence of its student outcomes, the support they receive and their overall experience is in no small part a result of his work over the last 18 years. Peter has played an important role in helping other colleges and in the community of the Sixth Form College sector in which he is widely respected. We have been the fortunate beneficiaries of his prolonged stay. I doubt that the College would be Ofsted ‘Outstanding’, financially robust and the first TES Sixth Form College of the Year without his commitment, energy and enthusiasm.” Peter Cooper said, “It is a real honour to be asked to be the fourth Principal of this wonderful College and I would like to pay tribute to Jonathan Godfrey for his role in its development. However, the real heroes are the students and staff of the College who have strived continuously to deliver their best with such outstanding results. I am extremely proud to have been part of this journey and I will ensure that the values and commitment that led to our success are continued. We have an impressive story and I’m looking forward to helping to shape the next chapter.” TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2017 | 9

TupsleyVoice News from the Whitehouse Hub Life at the Whitehouse Community Hub has been quite busy since the last Tupsley Voice was published. We had a lovely time over Christmas and the New Year. Our Christmas Carol Café proved to be popular with everyone, led by the Rev Nick Armstrong, with the music kindly provided by the St Paul’s Church music group. Kemble Care hosted an exciting Tea afternoon with bell ringing from a group called Tintinnabulis. The Scouts then used the Community Office for the first time to receive the Scout post. We also opened up the Hub to provide drinks for families waiting for the Round Table’s Father Christmas sleigh which was very popular. On New Years Eve the doors were opened for a few hours when members of the community enjoyed a ‘Bring and Share’ supper. Herefordshire Heart Start has just run a successful, fun filled, but serious, course. Unfortunately we were so fully booked that we have had to put names onto a waiting list. However, the Heart Start team are hoping to run another course soon. We continue to have our regular ‘Wednesday Drop In’ sessions 2pm until 4pm. Many new friendships are being formed and we have been able to support some people in practical ways. We are so grateful to all our volunteers who help to make it such a pleasant time. For a while we will be having Carpet Bowls laid out in the Grandison Room on a Wednesday. If you would like to come and have a go or pop in for a drink you are more than welcome. On the 2nd Monday of every month we have the ‘Tupsley Tea Club’ between 2pm and 4pm. The Tea Club on the 13th February was dedicated to the topic of love and by the time you read this it is hoped that residents will have contributed with favourite poems, readings and stories about love. On the 13th March 2pm until 4pm our Tea Club we have a daffodil theme and Councillor Marcelle Lloyd Hayes has also organised a talk about the Munitions in Rotherwas. The raffle money that day will be donated to the Marie Curie Nurse. Matthew from the Dragon Fitness Academy is trialling gentle exercise classes for anyone in the community who wants to take part on Mondays 10.30am until 11.30am. He will also soon be starting a Kung Fu Cadets class for 12 to 18year olds on Mondays at 5pm. If you are interested in this or have any questions please contact Matthew 07915 450 663 or the Community Hub. If you have skills and/or voluntary time that you think might be of use to us, please do get in touch. We now have a telephone number:- 01432 268103 and a new Hub booking Email: twpbookings@gmail.com

Shirley & her bicycles are here to stay 2016 was a fantastic year for Shirley and the Bicycle Ambassadors. So many new Bicycle Ambassadors from Tupsley joined us for rides around Hereford and for craftiness in the Whitehouse Community Hub including one of our new Community Bicycle Ambassadors Emma Pugh-Jones, who is a busy Tupsley mum. Emma says, “About 3 months ago I was approached by the lovely ladies at Shirley’s Wheels and after a chat over a cup of tea I find myself being shown a bike. The next thing you know I’m riding around with the kids on a beautiful black Gazelle and it’s wonderful.” So if you fancy taking that same step as her, Emma is your go-to woman in 2017.

Emma Pugh-Jones (Centre) joins the Community Bicycle Ambassador team and welcomes our newest Local Bicycle Ambassador (LBA), Kate Redding (left), helped by one of our youngest LBAs, Maisy Pugh-Jones (right).

Shirley is super excited for the year ahead in Tupsley. The project helped to secure extra funding from the Department for Transport for the next 3 years, so there will be more fun things and rides for everyone happening at the Whitehouse Community Hub and on the street, as Shirley gets ready to lead rides to the Hereford River Carnival and lead the carnival parade on Saturday the 29th April.

Appropriately, Carol Teasdale and the Shirleys got ready for Christmas with a ride to the Cathedral for Carols for Shoppers.

Family First Aid

If you have never ridden a bike, or it has been longer than you can remember, and you would like to give it a go, Shirley’s Wheels Rides are perfect for you. Shirley knows what it is like and so has created short, slow rides (30 mins max) and even has a bike for you to borrow.

ProTraining have found that many families and parents do not know the basics of first aid and do not really know what to do if they come across an accident or serious illness.

We will be getting crafty and riding on Saturday 11th and 25th of March, so come and join the fun as we get ready to party at Hereford River Carnival.

An online course for Parent First Aid is now available. For more information please see: http://www.profaw.co.uk

Find our rides and other events on Facebook, search Shirley’s Wheels and hit the like button.
