A Fantastic Night at the Quarry “Great fireworks “ “Fantastic night” “Absolutely amazing considering it was only donations”-just some of the positive feedback on social media after our 4th firework and bonfire night in the Quarry. Thank you for all the comments and great photos, it’s encouraging to know that our efforts as a community group paid off and we gave everyone a night to remember. As in previous years, several thousands’ turned out. We could not have achieved it though without the amazing support and help from all the volunteers leading up to the event, on the night and the day after- thank you all so much. Thanks too for support from Tosh on PA system, Hampton Dene PTFA , Spencer Grogan from Balfour Beatty, Hereford City Council and Bishop of Hereford Bluecoat school for use of their car park. A really big thank you too for all our generous sponsors- Tupsley Butchers (Johnathan Heggie), Arrow Plant Hire, Niteforce Fireworks, Hampton Hire, Wyevale Nursery, Bookers, County Jet Clean, Mercia Radios.

As you can perhaps imagine, the outlay is quite costly and so every penny is appreciated and necessary, as it gets ploughed back in to other events and community projects. If attending made you think you would like to be a part of a very worthwhile cause (providing affordable, family fun) then don’t be shy - contact us, Abbi Maddox 07711 049 509, or via Facebook, or maybe come along to our monthly meeting - the more the merrier! Look out on Fb for our next event, bingo night in February! Once more a big thank you to everyone who was involved and we wish you all a really happy Christmas and a peaceful new year. Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG)

If I say Happy Christmas to you this year, what does it mean?

It means I’m excited for you! What a lot of joy I see! It means I understand this time of year brings mixed emotions. It means I’ll be praying for you to feel God’s comfort in your great loss. It means I’ll be thinking of you as you juggle logistics and try to keep everyone happy in the house. It means I’ll be listening a bit more carefully about what may be a difficult financial situation. It means I get it that splitting yourself between two places is hard. It means I hope you receive that welcome and invitation. It means your efforts during the year are appreciated and I hope you get something of a rest with those you love. It means an enthusiastic yes. I love the carols and the candles too. It means an understanding of peace as a gift from God which passes all understanding. It means I hope church can be a place where you experience something of being part of a wider family, where you can just be you. It means I think God loves your worship whether you are an extrovert or an introvert. It means there’s a space for us all - however we have travelled. It means Happy Birthday, and Congratulations! It means I’m excited about you hanging up your stocking, and I hope you get some sleep on Christmas Eve. It means I’m so grateful to God for the story - that it’s true, and that somehow we are given a role in it. Beyond each exchange of ‘Happy Christmas!’ are many more things said or unsaid. The complete set of detail about each of us is understood by God, who treasures us and who knows each of us by name. He came to earth as Jesus to show us that he ‘gets it’, that he loves us and that he wants to be with us. All this and more are the reasons I share the greeting: Happy Christmas. Revd. Councillor Cath North

Christmas Openings

Hereford City is divided into 16 ward areas. Tupsley has 3 ward areas; Eign Hill, Aylestone Hill & Tupsley, each with a Herefordshire Councillor and a Hereford City Councillor. The map of the Eign Hill ward is printed here to help you get to know the ward boundary. Eign Hill Ward has the following two Councillors:Cath North:

Herefordshire Council

Jim Kenyon:

Hereford City Council

I am privileged to be the Herefordshire Council Councillor for the Eign Hill ward. I was first elected to the (then) Tupsley ward in a by-election in November 2013 and re-elected to Eign Hill in the local government elections of 2015. Eign Hill is one of the 53 Herefordshire Council wards – it was created in 2015 following a review of ward boundaries by the Local Government Boundary Commission. Most of the area was previously in the Tupsley ward and the remainder was in Aylestone. Eign Hill is served by two councils, which often causes confusion! Herefordshire Council is the local authority and responsible for delivering large and complex services across the county – including education, social care and waste management. As a parish council, Hereford City Council has a different remit – it installs the Mayor of Hereford, makes grants to local organisations and speaks for the people of the City wards. I was born in South Wales and moved to Hereford in 2008, where I live in Eign Hill with my 2 young sons. I am a qualified teacher and before having my children, I spent 10 years living in Hertfordshire, where I had a career in corporate IT training. I am passionate about community and was a founder member and funding co-ordinator of the Wellies Action Group and Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG). I played a key part in the refurbishment of both ‘The Quarry’ and the play area in Wellington Place, securing over £100,000 in external funding to finance these two projects. I am particularly interested in community regeneration, services for children and military families, and mental health, and regularly practice mindfulness and meditation. Although it is a challenging role, I really enjoy being a Councillor – especially meeting constituents. Most Wednesdays, I attend the Coffee Shop at Hampton Park URC between 11 and 12pm – please contact me if there is anything I can help you with.

Tupsley Cross Flowers

TABLE TOP SALE

Many Tupsley residents will have noticed and quietly appreciated the fresh flowers that are regularly placed on the steps of the Tupsley War Memorial. The presence of the flowers may also have reminded the passer-by (as it does me every time I spot the flowers) of the very many young men in Tupsley who gave their lives for their country and their families in the two great World Wars. There are 52 names on the cross of those who had lived in Tupsley Parish and who died whilst in service in the 1st World War. An amazingly large number of people from what would have been a very much smaller population than today. The 1911 census records a total of 1327 people in Tupsley Parish. With an average of perhaps 4 people per home there would be about 350 homes in the parish at the time, so an average of 1 in 7 homes lost one of their family in the Great War. Many passer-bys will have wondered who takes the trouble to buy or grow those flowers and carefully place them on the Memorial. It can be revealed that each month the flowers are donated and placed on the memorial by one of the many members of the Tupsley Womens Institute who have been doing this in turn for very many years. The accompanying photograph shows WI member Mrs Ann Jones of Quarry Road after placing the flowers for Remembrance Day in the vase which commemorates the 7 men who gave their lives whilst in service during the 2nd World War. Mrs Jones has been a member of the Tupsley WI for nearly 40 years and is one of the longest serving members. She and the whole of Tupsley WI hope that the flowers give pleasure, and reflection, to the many thousands of people that pass the Cross every day.

Bag packing raises £320 for Bishop’s school charities Staff and students from Bishop’s School spent time bag packing in Marks and Spencer before half term. There was a good turn out and over £320 was raised for the school charities. These were just three of the packers who helped that weekend Then the school did it again in November!

TupsleyVoice Bishop’s School Head praises pupils, staff and parents In the newsletter to parents Bishop’s school praised the pupils, staff and parents by saying:“I continue to be impressed with the enthusiasm and energy of our young people. The range of activities and achievements covered this term is a reflection of the hard work put in by our staff, the cheerful and enthusiastic commitment of the students, and the support their parents are able to give at home. This partnership between students, staff and parents/ carers is what makes Bishop’s the school it is and for this I thank them all.

Poppy Art displayed in Widemarsh Street The image of ceramic poppies filling the moat of the Tower of London was one of the most poignant to commemorate those who died during the First World War. And now Hereford paid its own tribute to the county’s fallen soldiers with a unique art installation led by a team from the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School. Students, staff and members of Hereford Round Table – which funded the project – made around 1,500 poppies with each poppy displaying the names of two soldiers from the county that died in the First World War. The history department was also asked to write an expression of remembrance on one poppy. The poppies were then mounted on pieces of fabric, which were hung in the shop windows of independent businesses and shops in Widemarsh Street. Year 11 pupil and head girl Tharindi Attalapitiya said: “I think as young people we should commemorate this big event as a lot of people died – especially young people.” Luke Conod of Hereford Round Table, added: “We are just incredibly excited and privileged to be involved.”

I wanted to mention the wonderful Open Evening that showcased our school at its best. I was particularly struck by the pride our students have in their community. The two Open Mornings were well attended and our Year 8 students who acted as guides to parents and prospective students represented the school with a maturity and politeness that can only be commended.” Quotes from students: I love Bishop’s because “I have made lots of friends and my learning has really improved.” “The opportunities are endless and the teachers are great at explaining things.” “I have an amazing form tutor that supports our decisions and gives advice and help.”

This represents an increase of 58% over last year.

Recently released figures from UCAS, the University Admissions Service, show that for England as a whole these so called “early applications” increased this year by 7%. Commenting on the figures, College Principal Peter Cooper, said, “We encourage all our students to be ambitious in their choices for higher and further education and the figures suggest that our academically gifted students are certainly not inhibited about applying for the most competitive courses. We run support programmes for students who want to apply to Oxbridge and get a lot of help from both Cambridge and Oxford to encourage bright students from all backgrounds to apply, to demystify the application process and to give them the best chance of getting an offer. To put this in context, last year Oxford received more than 19,000 applications for about 3,250 places , so only one in six applicants received an offer. Our offer rate (closer to one in three over recent years) compares favourably with that overall ratio.”

St Paul’s School’s 150th Anniversary Memories of St Paul’s school WANTED St Paul’s Primary School opened in 1868 so its 150th Anniversary will be celebrated in 2018. Were you a pupil at the school or did any of your children attend the school. Tupsley Voice would like to commemorate the year by printing a selection of people’s special memories of the school. So:1) Please let Tupsley Voice have your special memories in no more than about 125 words that we could possibly publish in one of our 2018 Issues. and/or

Hampton Dene Harvest Festival at Tupsley Church Hampton Dene School went across the road to St Paul’s Church, Tupsley, for their Harvest Festival service this year and were amazingly well behaved. All the children (and parents) generously donated masses of delicious harvest food which was donated to the Hereford Food Bank, where the staff were overwhelmed and most grateful for the quantity of items received.

2) Please let us have your memories of the school in as many words as you want (together with any photographs) that could be put into an historical archive that would be submitted to Herefordshire Archive for people to read now and in future years – so information about life at the school throughout the ages is not lost. The school Headmaster (Mr Andew Teale) has approved the production of an anniversary brochure by a group of volunteers, to be edited by the Tupsley Voice editor, Keith Pratley. This will include details of the history of the school and a record of the school and its activities, normal and celebratory, in 2018. Your memories might provide useful information that could be incorporated into that brochure which will be published in November (in time for a Christmas gift). Information (including photographs) received before the end of February would have a greater chance of being incorporated. Preferably type your memories, scan any photographs and e mail them to tupsleyvoice@hotmail.co.uk. Alternatively please post them to The Editor, Tupsley Voice, c/o Parish Office, St Paul’s Church Community Centre, Church Road, Tupsley, Hereford, HR1 1RT. An exhibition of the school archives (including many old photographs of pupils past) is also probable. All original photographs will be taken care of and returned. TupsleyVoice In the fields where poppies grow, the dead men are covered in the snow. People are weeping, creatures are creeping, in the fields where poppies grow. The sun is rising yet its dark. All can hear is the singing lark. The guns have stopped and left in peace, the war has finally come to a cease, in the fields where poppies grow. Back at home people cried, for the men who left and died. And in their honour we remember those, as our assembly come to a close. The trees are gone, the soil is black, we’re wishing for the men to come back, from the fields where poppies grow. By Natalia Hirons (6D) St Paul’s Sch.

West Mercia Police- Hereford City North side Have your say Hampton Park Reform Church Coffee Morning We support the Hampton Park Reform Church coffee mornings, which run every Wednesday from 10.00am - 12 noon. One of the team attends the coffee morning most weeks and we invite you to join us for a coffee and discuss any concerns you may have. Appeals for Information- Burglaries There were a number of burglaries in the area during the late summer. On two occasions washing up liquid has been squirted within the properties by offenders. On two occasions back patio doors have been smashed, allowing offenders to gain entry. Please consider your security and the measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of being targeted. Simple steps like locking doors, windows and gates, installing security lighting and using timer switches to light your property when you are not there can make a big difference.
