FC Phoenix Under 11’s have thrills at Shrewsbury FC F.C. Phoenix are a local football club based at Gorsty Lane, Tupsley. Last April I joined the club as a coach to set up a team for U11’s as the club didn’t have a team at this age group and I knew that the area had plenty of lads that played football as my son goes to St Paul’s School and all his friends play. I managed to gain sponsorship for the team from The Dentist @ Tupsley who’s logo we have on our shirts. The real story starts last September when we entered a tournament held in Ludlow, organised by Shrewsbury Town FC in the community. The tournament had teams entered from the Shropshire, Herefordshire and Mid Wales. After some tough competitive games F.C. Phoenix got to the final against Toros F.C another

Herefordshire grassroots team and we managed to win the tournament. Due to our success we were invited to take a lap of honour around Shrewsbury Town’s ground at half time in their Sky Bet League 1 home game against A.F.C. Wimbledon in March. After playing in the Hereford Junior Football League in the morning the team made the 50 mile trip to watch Shrewsbury. As the first half came to a close the team nervously made their way down to the side of the pitch. The lap of honour started and the boys were clapped and cheered by all 6,500 supports in the stadium all the way around proudly showing off the trophy they had won. As you can see from the picture the team loved every minute of the day something not many

local grassroots teams from Hereford, let alone Tupsley, would get to do. A big thank you to all our sponsors, The Dentist @ Tupsley, CR2 Electrics and E.C. Joseph and Sons Ltd. For a local grassroots team from Tupsley to have the opportunity to do this doesn’t come round too often and it highlights how much local talent we have in Tupsley Phoenix run boys teams from U7’s U13’s and have a Saturday morning club for boys aged 5 and above. For further details please contact Ade Harris on - 07791 441 723 - or email fcphoenix85@gmail.com. If any girls are interested in playing, we have a sister club Tupsley girls. Contact Jamie Wright for details on 07736 197 206. Carl Thomasson

TupsleyVoice National Accolade for Tupsley Teenage Model Engineer Members of the Hereford Society of Model Engineers (SME) are pleased to announce that one of their Young Engineers, Noah Eggar, who lives in Tupsley and is a pupil at the Bishops School, has been selected as the Young Engineer of the Year for 2018 by the awards committee of the Southern Federation of Model Engineering Societies. The Federation represents almost 300 Clubs and Societies throughout the UK so for Noah and four of his fellow young engineers from the Hereford SME (who also received awards), to win recognition in this way is a superb achievement both for them personally and for the club, as well as putting Hereford on the engineering map.

Race for life comes to an end Few people in Tupsley will be aware that Bob Izon, who lived in Tupsley and did much good work for the Tupsley Community, was the English Schools Under 16 Boys one mile Champion in 1958 in a world record time. He then went on in 1961 to be the 880 yards English Schools Senior Boys Champion. Regretfully Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1992 but he remained active as a Rotarian, a justice of the peace, and a school governor at St. Paul’s Primary School. His race for life eventually took its toll and he passed away on 1st April, aged 75. Bob will be remembered by many as the man who carried the Olympic torch on 24 May 2012 along Ledbury Road from the Cock of Tupsley to Folly Lane, cheered on by a big crowd including the pupils and many parents from St Pauls Primary School. During an all-school assembly the next day, students spent more than two hours with Bob, taking turns holding the torch that had carried the flame and having their photographs taken. For many years he was the Chief Executive Officer of Herefordshire’s Community Health trust. During his tenure he oversaw the development of the new Community hospitals in Leominster, Ross on Wye and Bromyard, as part of the Trust’s vision to provide excellent patient care in communities right across the county. A memorial service for Bob was held at St Paul’s church on 18th April where members of his family, friends and work colleagues celebrated his achievements and fondly remembered the good times he shared with them.

Later in the year Noah will be in a party of members from Hereford SME who will be visiting the largest Model Engineering Exhibition in the world in Germany, so that will again further his experience. For those of you who have visited the miniature railway at Broomy Hill and enjoyed rides on the trains, the track there is about 1.5 km long. Hereford SME is one of the leading model engineering clubs in the UK and would welcome potential new members to Broomy Hill to take part in all the club activities. Remember you do not have to be a fully qualified engineer to be a member. Only about 40% of the current 120 members have had any formal engineering training, so you would be in good company if you would like to take part in a very interesting and fully absorbing leisure activity. Should you like to consider joining, why not come along on one of the club’s open days which are held on the second and last Sunday of every month from April to October, and see what goes on, talk to the members and see how you might contribute to the club’s well being and future - you would be most welcome.

Wellington Place Open Garden – 28 July The delightful, and many times a “Hereford in Bloom” prize winning garden at 41 Wellington Place, Tupsley, will once again be open to the public on Saturday 28th July from 2 to 6pm. Money raised will go to Midlands Air Ambulance. The oasis like garden has a wide range of plants including many rare varieties. Craft items, refreshments and plants will be for sale. You will undoubtedly receive a gracious welcome from Mary, Gerald and Mark and a chance to sit and enjoy the ambiance with refreshments.

Tell us about your news or event For inclusions please email your information to tupsleyvoice@hotmail.co.uk The Autumn Issue copy deadline is Friday 17th August. Publication will be on 8th September (2nd Saturday). Send us details of events to take place before or very soon after the Winter Issue publication date of 8th Dec (2nd Saturday), as well as reports of past events.

New site found for Bright Sparks The Core Weekly Programme Pre-school Bright Sparks Early Years has been running for nearly 39 years on its current site, alongside Broadlands Primary School. In September 2015 Broadlands Primary School relocated to a new site, and over the last few months the council has been actively working with Bright Sparks to find them a suitable new home. Following discussions with Simon Robertson, the Head of the adjacent Aylestone School, accommodation for Bright Sparks has been secured on the site, which is only 100metres from their current location. This will enable the pre-school to remain in the local area of Tupsley. The council will fund the full refurbishment of the area to make it fit for use as a Pre-school. Planning will be applied for in the next few weeks with the move scheduled to take place by early September 2018.

Whitehouse Farm Ancestry Dear Editor, I was most interested to see the feature of Whitehouse Farm in the Autumn edition of Tupsley Voice. Whilst researching my wife’s family history I discovered that in the 1841 Census a Mr George Packwood lived at the farm with his wife and family. My wife’s ancestor, William Evans, lodged at the farm and was a farm labourer. William died at Whitehouse farm in 1844 and his death was notified by Mr Packwood. If anyone in the area or indeed at the Hereford Record Office has any information regarding the farm and its occupants prior to 1841, particularly at the end of the 18th century, I would be delighted to hear from them. Mr G M Gilbert.

TupsleyVoice A Night of Celebration! On the evening of Friday 6th July, Tupsley residents around Hampton Dene Road may see some unusual vehicles on the roads….Yes, Prom season is almost upon us! Year 11 students from the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School (BHBS) will be returning on the evening of 6th in all their finery for a night of celebration before moving on to pastures new this autumn. Red carpet arrivals will be followed by a delicious threecourse meal in the main hall - transformed over two days by parents and friends of BHBS into a luxurious party venue. An awards ceremony with a difference is followed by music and dancing to bring the evening to a close. Run by the School’s PSFA, the event is one of the highlights of the Summer Term, with a considerable turnout of onlookers expected to see the guests arrive….meaning some extra traffic in the area for a few hours. “We have no idea what modes of transport may be planned,” said Lisa Strevens, BHBS PSFA Chair, “but I guarantee there will be some surprises in there!” “As always we will work hard to minimise the disruption to local residents, and would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding during those few hours in the early evening on 6th July.” Parents, friends, family and fans coming to watch the arrivals are asked to consider both local residents and general safety if parking near the School. Thank you !

Tupsley Coffee Shop Fancy a biscuit with a cup of tea or coffee on a Wednesday morning? Why not pop along to the Tupsley Coffee Shop? The Coffee Shop can be found at the Hampton Park United Reformed Church at the junction of Old Eign Hill and Hampton Dene Road. This is not a ‘churchy’ gathering, rather more the community coming together for a pleasant morning of meeting friends and conversation (or gossip). There are Fairtrade goods on sale, together with a selection of seasonal cards. We also sell the council approved Green recycle bags. The Coffee Shop is open between 10:00 and 12:00 and you will be assured of a welcome. The Coffee Shop is a joint venture between Hampton Park URC and St Paul’s C of E and has been very successfully running for very many years, with around 80 people from the Tupsley community attending. If you haven’t called in before, come along, you may well meet some old friends, or your neighbours (but don’t let that put you off!). New Volunteers to serve drinks are always very welcome. Save the window cleaning until Thursday, you deserve a break: see you Wednesday morning. Revd. Martin Hardy 6

Change in Headship at Bishop’s School Following a period of illness the Headteacher at Bishop’s Sara Catlow-Hawkins recently made the decision to retire at the end of March. In addition to being the Headteacher Sara had made significant contributions to education in the county by chairing various committees including Schools Forum and the Diocese Board of Education. She had worked in education for over thirty years and was passionate about the outcomes for young people. During her illness the governing body had asked Deputy Headteachers Martin Henton and Pete Gibbins to oversee the running of the school, subsequently Martin has been been appointed Acting Headteacher by the Governors. Following teaching in several schools in Liverpool, Martin joined Bishop’s as the Head of Science before promotion to the senior team; firstly as Assistant Headteacher and then as Deputy Headteacher. Martin explained that “Since the Ofsted inspection in February 2017 our staff have worked tirelessly to address the actions identified in the inspection report to support our students in achieving a high level of success. This was evident in our 2017 GCSE results which were greater than many schools in the county with a higher Ofsted judgement. Following our rapid recovery we are expecting the next Ofsted inspection soon and are confident in being judged a Good school again. The governing body have already begun the task of planning the recruitment and appointment of a new Headteacher to continue Bishop’s journey of success.

TupsleyVoice Special School to be built at Broadlands On 29 March 2018, the Department for Education announced that Barrs Court Academy Trust had been selected to run a new special school for Herefordshire. The school is planned to be built on the former Broadlands Primary School site. It will provide places for 50 young people aged 16 to 19 years old with severe and complex learning disabilities, including autism. Herefordshire Council was one of only 14 councils across the country to be successful in its bid to create a new special free school which will offer high quality and modern accommodation for some of our most vulnerable learners. Its site at Broadlands will enable its students to benefit from a range of different facilities and have contact with other post 16 students at the adjacent colleges. It is scheduled to open in September 2020. The school will create a new centre of excellence for young people with special educational needs (SEN) and will: • • • • •

Provide high quality teaching and learning Offer high quality information, advice and guidance Provide a community facility outside of school hours Enable internships and work experience Support students in other educational facilities, including mainstream schools, colleges and training providers • Provide a resource hub for staff working with SEN children and their families

Blind Bishop’s Swimmer has Paralympic Goal A rising star who has dreams of competing in the Paralympics has come away with a haul of medals from the Blind Sports National Youth Swimming Gala. Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School pupil James Galvin came away with a Gold and three Silver medals in the championship event recently. He took Gold in the men’s 100 metre relay and individual Silvers in the 25 metres freestyle and backstroke along with the 50 metres backstroke. James had previously been crowned National Champion in the pool for his age group. “I was a bit disappointed with the medal haul as it would have been nice to get first,” he said. “But to get the medals gives me a sense of achievement as a disabled person, which feels amazing. “Putting the medals around your neck shows that I’m not lazy. I like to promote that I’m blind, but still going out there and doing what I enjoy.” James, who trains at Leominster Leisure Centre, has been swimming competitively for around three years since registering his interest with British Blind Sport. “I’ve just loved being in the water since I was young,” he added. “I signed up to British Blind Sport, went to a swimming gala and came out champion. I also played for the Arsenal blind football squad in London. But they train every Monday, which was quite difficult to get to, so I’m just focusing on swimming now.” “Next, I just need to try and get the Paralympics qualification time.” In May, James’ achievements were acknowledged by Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School, when he was presented with a special school tie. Hospice Laughter Yoga Laughter Yoga is a combination of laughter and breathing exercises which are good for the body, mind, spirit and soul. Research has shown that laughing frequently strengthens our immune system, boosts mind, diminishes pain and protects us from the damaging effects of stress. By seeking out more opportunities for humour and laughter, we can improve our emotional health, relationships with others and find greater happiness/contentment. St Michael’s Hospice is running a session for adults on Sunday 24th June in the Education Centre at St Michael’s Hospice, 11am-12:30pm. Sessions are free but a donation to St Michael’s Hospice would be welcome. Pre-booking is essential. Email Elaine at epawley@smhospicehereford.org TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2018 | 7

TupsleyVoice Exciting times ahead for Bright Sparks We have all been very busy at Bright Sparks over the last few months, enjoying the wintery snow, dressing up for World Book Day, having an Easter bonnet Parade, having fabulous visits from Pedro the music man and most recently celebrating the Royal wedding.

Andrew Teale (left of centre) with Dr Martin Elcock at the Lay Canon appointment service together with Dean of Hereford, The Very Reverend Michael Tavinor (left), and the Bishop of Hereford, The Rt Revd Richard Frith (right).

Honour for St Paul’s School Headmaster Andrew Teale, St Paul’s Primary school Headmaster, has been appointed into the position of Lay Canon at Hereford Cathedral. This is a real honour, especially since there are just four ‘Honorary’ lay Canon positions. The position has been bestowed by the Bishop of Hereford, and is in recognition of Andrew’s key role as a Christian leader in education in Herefordshire and his significant and supportive influence within the wider community. As well as Headmaster at St Paul’s he is a governor of Hereford Cathedral School. The diocese use this position to celebrate and invite people into its team to assist it in building links into the local community and throughout the diocese. Mr Teale was officially installed as Lay Canon during the choral evensong service on Sunday 6th May in Hereford Cathedral, along with Dr Martin Elcock of Claverley, near Bridgnorth.

Swimming Gala Success for St Paul’s School Mr Teale, Miss Major and I had a fantastic afternoon with this year’s ‘St Paul’s Swimming Team’ at the Annual Hereford Primary School Swimming Gala. All children swam with determination and demonstrated skilful swimming techniques. Many of our children were talent spotted by Hereford Swimming Club! As always, St Paul’s were the most enthusiastic and supportive spectators, cheering team members on throughout the afternoon. As there were three heats per race, children’s times were recorded which led to lots of surprise medals being awarded during the medal ceremony to individual swimmers and two of our relay teams, 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze. Overall, points scored by every swimmer meant that our school was in the top six so St Paul’s had to enter a team in the final race of the evening with six of our fastest swimmers competing in the canon relay. It was electrifying and we were excited to see our school come 2nd! Mrs O’Connor (Teacher) TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2018 | 9

Chess Club members qualify for National Final This term the St Pauls School chess club have been participating in the DeLancey Chess Challenge. It has involved playing a different member of the club each week, and gaining points for each game. The children have played well and enjoyed this competition with its treats! Every member scored enough points to win a badge and mascot. Well done to everybody. Special mention and congratulations to Carlos Patterson Navarro who won all seven games and was the school champion. Nine children also achieved enough points to enable them to qualify for the next stage – a County competition at Hereford Cathedral School on Sunday 29th April, playing the best players from schools in Herefordshire, Shropshire and Monmouthshire. Six of those children represented St Paul’s on 29th April at the Mercia De Lancey Chess Megafinal. They all enjoyed the day, playing 6 rounds of chess against the best chess players from schools in Herefordshire, Monmouthshire and Shropshire. Everyone won at least one game in this tough tournament. 2 of the boys won enough games to qualify for the National Final in Solihull in July. The 2 girls won silver and bronze medals, by coming 2nd and 3rd in their sections. Well done.

TupsleyVoice Calling all local golfers! The Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School (BHBS) is hosting a Charity Golf Day on Saturday 23rd June 2018 at Burghill Valley Golf Club. From left, Linda, Greta, Beryl, Councillor Marcelle, Pam, George and Elizabeth.

£1000 won by Whitehouse The Whitehouse Hub won first place in the Hereford City Community awards. The cheque for £1,000 will be used for the ongoing renovations, possibly the upstairs office. Thank you to all our volunteers, many of whom could not be there and thank you to Councillor Marcelle who entered us for the awards.

Spend your summer supporting St Michael’s Hospice Our fundraising events continue on Saturday 16th June on Hereford’s Bishops Meadow with the most colourful Paint Runner to date. This vibrant event celebrates health, happiness and creativity. Along with the popular Foam Zone, the party atmosphere will be alive and kicking before, during and after the 5K. On Sunday 8th July, just as the football World Cup is hotting up in Russia, the Sue Parry Football Tournament on Widemarsh Common will celebrate our national game by featuring an adult tournament and a number of junior events. Pedal power is the name of the game on Sunday 15th July when the Wheelie Big Cycle tours the countryside of Herefordshire and Wales. With new distances and routes, including our first ever 100-mile course, the 2018 edition of Herefordshire’s favourite cycle event is the perfect way to enjoy one of our nation’s most popular sports. If all these summer events leave you out of breath, relax with Tea on the Terrace on Sunday 19th August. Choose from a fine selection of sandwiches, freshly baked scones with cream and strawberry jam, and a mouth-watering range of freshlybaked pastries and cakes. Enjoy all this while taking in the views on offer at St Michael’s. On Friday 21st September, the night sky of Hereford will be turned pink with the flare of hundreds of women as Venus goes a little disco. Venus ‘I Feel Love’ is a night for women to join together, remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones. Get ‘Lost in Music’, experience ‘Night Fever’ and sing ‘We are Family’ - because ‘Th at’s the Way We Like It.’ For something more genteel, our Open Gardens programme continues with regular opening across the county between now and the end of September. For more information on any of our events, visit st-michaelshospice.org.uk/events/
