HAPPY 150 BIRTHDAY TH

2018 was the 150th Anniversary of St Paul’s Primary school being first built and opened in 1868. St Paul’s CE Primary School proudly celebrated its 150th birthday several times in 2018 and photographs of these celebrations can be seen on pages 6 & 7. Fairly uniquely, despite there now being a modern school, the original Victorian school is still standing, unaltered, alongside it. It was built mainly with very generous subscriptions from the very small Tupsley community. The Victorian school is alongside the current school playground, constantly reminding the current pupils of the school’s history.

Alongside is the Headmasters house, built at the same time. Both Victorian buildings are still in daily use by St Paul’s Church Nursery, and by St Paul’s Primary which has a music room there. Until the school was dedicated to St Paul in 1951 it was known as Tupsley School and unless the pupils managed at the age of 11, to pass entry exams to a Girl’s or Boy’s High School, or perhaps the Cathedral School, they stayed at Tupsley School until they started work – generally after their 14th birthday. It was not until Bishop’s School opened in 1958 that St Paul’s School no longer had Senior (ie 11+) pupils, though all the Senior Boys were earlier transferred to Whitecross School in 1955.

In June everyone at St Paul’s school relished the chance to be photographed from above on a clear and sunny day, in celebration of 150 glorious years (1868 – 2018) of schooling in Tupsley.

Missing the signs – A thought for Easter

Hospice Big Spring Walk – Sunday 17th March

Have you ever missed a road sign – and entered a one-way street the wrong way? For me it’s one of those moments, aged 17, I can still feel the gut-wrenching horror, as my driving instructor stamped on his dual control brake with dramatised force – clearly succeeding in making his point! And then last week, taking a rare variation of route in Tupsley by car, I almost did it again. I did not expect that No-entry sign just there! Of course some signs are really hard to read. Headlight flashes‌ ironic emails‌ and subtle eye signals – no, you’ve lost me! And in St Paul’s and St Andrew’s churches we’re taking a journey reading the entire Bible through 2019: now there’s plenty of opportunity for misreading signs. Like trying to read a face: it’s so easy to imagine something that wasn’t there, and miss what was there – especially when you’re feeling sensitive or a bit guilty! Spring is in the air, and of course there are already plenty of signs: signs of unquenchable life bursting out again. Signs of a beautiful created rhythm – mindful of its Creator, and creating true mindfulness. Next, this year well on into Spring, Easter comes: with its now established signs of chocolate eggs – oh no! Those bunnies seem to be taking the upper hand now. And in fact, quite what is it that makes even an egg an Easter symbol? Certainly something about new life; and life breaking out of confinement – perhaps a little like Jesus’ new life breaking out of a tomb?

Gym and Group Exercise Classes www.thePoint4.co.uk enquiries@rnc.ac.uk

But back to missing the signs. The real trouble comes when signs (like winks of the eye, or flashes of headlights) are close to the expected, but actually the opposite. And for Easter, I admit it’s pretty attractive just to be happy, and choose life rather than death. But the real signs tell me something rather different. A cross. An empty tomb. Not Life by avoiding death, but life through death.

Non-Members very welcome

It may be that the last year for you has been made much harder by a death, or more than one. It’s not a journey any of us would choose, and in all our churches you have our thoughts and prayers. And you also have the good news of a season that doesn’t pretend. And a God who’s love never gives up. One who didn’t just avoid or escape death. He smashed it. Jesus is alive, right now, living in Tupsley.

See page 5– and find out more this Easter. And don’t miss the signs. Eggsactly. A very Happy Easter. Rev Nick Armstrong, Vicar of St Paul’s, Tupsley

There is no cost for this event as long as places are booked in advance online at www. st-michaels-hospice.org.uk/ big-spring-walk/

Hereford Music Circle

Suddenly that’s a mixture of: embarrassing, disturbing, confusing, amazing‌ And it’s all easier to avoid, until death breaks into our lives. In the end of course, the avoiding strategy is no more effective than holding an Easter egg on a hot day.

TupsleyVoice Lugg Meadows Fritillary & Curlew Guided walk

Under Construction 1968

Completed early in 1969

Exciting year ahead for Hampton Park United Reformed Church Celebrations start Saturday March 9th In the last ‘Tupsley Voice’ we featured the background to the building of Hampton Park Church in March 1969, on the edge of the then new Hampton Dene housing development. 50 years on, we are celebrating how that vision of the founders of the church has been fulfilled: a beautiful, functional sanctuary for worship and rooms for community use during the week. Hampton Park URC was the first Presbyterian church in England to be specifically designed as an “all purpose” community building. Our celebrations begin on Saturday March 9th with the visit of Rev. Roger Whitehead (our Minister at the time) – the inspiration behind the building, and Rev. John HallMatthews, (past vicar at St. Paul’s C of E, Tupsley) with whom Roger worked to set up the link which we still enjoy today between the two churches in Tupsley. An informal tea is planned from 3pm on March 9th at Hampton Park church. Everyone welcome. Other special events during the Golden Jubilee Year will include a Musical concert to raise money for Christian Aid on May 11th, a visit by West Midland Bell Ensemble on July 13th, a concert by the Hereford Rail Choir on September 21st, and an Open Day on October 19th for the community to see what the many social groups who use the building during the week (all listed on page 2) get up to! Add to that the Summer and Christmas Fairs on June 22nd and Nov. 30th, and visits by all our former ministers; we are in for a busy time. Full details of all events are shown on our website: www.hamptonparkurc. co.uk. We have also produced a calendar for this very special year; copies are available in the church foyer. All events will be confirmed nearer the time together with any additional information.’

Hungry Cricketers need feeding !! Bartestree and Lugwardine 3rd & 4th cricket teams are looking for help in providing teas for their home games. Could you feed 25 hungry sportsmen?! Games are played at St Mary’s School, Lugwardine from May to August. Teas usually consist of sandwiches, savouries, crisps & cakes. The club covers the cost and we can pick it up from your house if needed. If you can help, please call Alun Evans on 07747 840500 or Ian Strangward on 07966 610109. 4

The Lugg Meadows will soon be attracting keen botanists and nature lovers once more as the nationally scarce snake’s head fritillary decorates the grassland with its delicate blooms. The fritillaries usually flower in April or May though dates always depend on the weather and whether water is still lying on the meadows which lie on the flood plain of the River Lugg. Herefordshire Wildlife Trust will be leading a guided walk on Saturday 27th April – hopefully coinciding with the fritillaries! And you can book online at www.herefordshirewt.org Another increasingly scare – and iconic – species of the meadows can be seen – or more likely heard – in spring. The curlew is a very large, tall wader, whose haunting call (‘Cur-lee’) is unmistakable and it can be heard from February through to July on its breeding grounds. Though curlew no longer breed on the Upper Lugg as the site is too busy, a small number of pairs still breed on Lower Lugg. Herefordshire Wildlife Trust is working closely with the Herefordshire Ornithological Club to ensure the Lugg Meadows remain a safe haven for this special bird. Please follow signage on the nature reserve through the spring which will temporarily restrict access to some areas and require dogs to be on leads in others. This will reduce the disturbance which so often leads to adult birds flying from their nests, leaving their eggs open to predation.

Headmaster of St Paul’s Primary School Resigns On 11 Feb in a letter to parents and carers, Mr Andrew Teale, Headteacher of St Paul’s Primary school announced that he had resigned his post and would be leaving the school at Easter. In recent months he has been absent from St Pauls school working as Interim Director of Education for Herefordshire Diocese and will continue working within education across Mr Teale : Photogaph the Diocese. St Paul’s school supplied by H Tempest Ltd governing body have decided that Mrs Vautier-Thomas, currently deputising for Mr Teale, will be Acting Headteacher for the summer term 2019. The governing body will appoint a new permanent Headteacher for September 2019. R Teale said “It has been a privilege to be the headteacher at St Paul’s for the last eight years. It is an excellent school with a dedicated team of professionals. I am grateful for the enormous support I have received from parents, governors and the staff team in that time. I think around 900 pupils have attended the school since 2010 and I sincerely hope they have gathered as many happy memories of their time here at St Paul’s, as I have. I hope too, that we have helped put them on the right road for their next steps in learning and in life.”

St Paul’s Childcare is Outstanding! St Paul’s Childcare is delighted to announce that the outcome of their recent Ofsted inspection is OUTSTANDING! We were welcomed back this term to notification that an inspector would be visiting us on the second day back. The day went smoothly and after a 10 hour inspection she congratulated us with the good news. The inspector recognised the setting for the qualities that St Paul’s Childcare has been known for since opening in 1966. Comments in the report include, “The learning environment is vibrant and extremely well organised. Teaching is of a consistently high standard.” The well qualified and experienced staff were noted as having “high morale and totally supported in their professional development.” They were seen as “excellent role models” who “know the children extremely well” which therefore reflects in “the children’s behaviour being exemplary.” Our inclusive approach was praised and it was noted that “Staff supporting children who have Special Educational Needs go above and beyond to coordinate and work with parents.” We give thanks to the parents and community for their support in expressing “extremely positive comments about the nursery and their fondness of staff and management.” All parents advised Ofsted that “their children are extremely settled, safe and happy.” This is a wonderful way to start the New Year and we have enjoyed celebrating the excellent news together.

ST PAUL’S 150 ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS TH

The 150th Anniversary celebration events at St Paul’s school started in January 2018 with a service in St Paul’s church attended by the Bishop of Hereford, Rt Rev Richard Frith. The headmaster told the children what life was like at the school in 1868 and illustrated his talk with a photograph of the heavily bearded first headmaster, Mr Rees Price-Hilliar. Pupils, staff and governors filled every pew and the service included Victorian songs and readings. Year 6 pupils gave a special presentation comparing school life today with school life 150 years ago. World Book Day on 1st March was celebrated with Victorian flair, as staff and children alike dressed up as Victorian characters from books! Victorian characters Oliver Twist rubbed shoulders with Mr Gradgrind (from the Victorian novel, Hard Times by Charles Dickens), with Sherlock Holmes on hand to solve any mysteries of mistaken identity! During the summer term, staff, pupils and volunteers worked hard to create a very special Memorial Garden within the school grounds, partly to mark the 150th anniversary. The garden is tucked away behind Pippin House, which forms part of the original Victorian school building. Children and staff can go to the garden for some quiet time and to remember loved ones. On 22 June the whole school had a Victorian Day. Children and staff dressed up as Victorian characters from books: Oliver Twist met Sherlock Holmes that day at St Paul’s! Worship that morning had a Victorian theme, with readings from Dickens, and we reflected, again, on how much has

6

| TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2019

changed in the past 150 years. Whilst working conditions were poor and education a real privilege back then, we recognised that for too many people, living conditions remain tough today, and our prayers that morning were of thanks for the education we enjoy today and for equality of opportunity throughout the nation and the world. Lessons had a Victorian theme to them with children doing Drill in the playground and handwriting on slates. The evening saw the school packed for the annual choir concert which had a Victorian theme, with choristers in Victorian dress and a selection of Victorian songs in the programme. Favourites included Oh I do Like to Be Beside the Seaside, Won’t You Buy my Pretty Flowers?, I’d Do Anything, Where is Love? and Food, Glorious Food. To continue the celebrations the school fete, held in July, had many people dressed in Victorian Costume. Year 6 pupils designed and ran Victorian themed games. For example seeing who could blow with a straw a model barge fastest down a model Victorian canal AND throwing a bean bag at famous Victorian faces they had discovered.

TupsleyVoice Bishop of Hereford announces his retirement in the Autumn

Events at The Whitehouse

The Bishop of Hereford, the Rt Revd Richard Frith has announced he is to retire in the Autumn.

2 - 4pm (Expt 2nd Mon) - 2 hr walk with stop for refreshments

Bishop Richard has been in post for five years and has overseen a diocesan mission strategy focused on Proclaiming Christ and Growing Disciples by inspiring each generation. His time in post has seen a shift to intergenerational church and the successful Strategic Development Bid, which funded six intergenerational Missioners in five of our market towns, key opportunities for growth in church communities. His public ministry will end with a service at Hereford Cathedral on Saturday 23 November at 11am. All are welcome to join this service to say thank you and pray for God’s blessing upon him and his wife Kay as they begin the next chapter of their life together.

Legendary Councillor Marcelle Lloyd-Hayes to step aside After 24 years as a councillor for Tupsley, Marcelle Lloyd –Hayes has decided not to contest her seats on Herefordshire and Hereford City Councils in the forthcoming local elections in May. Marcelle moved to Hereford with her husband Bob in 1982 and in 1995 gave up her job in Social Services to become a Tupsley Councillor. In the mid 1990’s she spent several years helping to drive Humanitarian Aid lorries to deliver food, medical supplies, clothes, blankets, disabled aids and serviced sewing machines, to war torn Croatia, Bosnia, Mostar and Sarajevo. There were more than 40 convoys in all. Among her proudest achievements was the establishment of the skatepark on Holmer Road and the Greenway Bridge from Tupsley to Rotherwas. She also canvassed Welsh Water to eliminate the occasional terrible smells from Eign Sewage Works which resulted in more that £1million of improvements, which we still appreciate today. Whilst in Ohio, USA with her husband visiting his family she saw a retirement village and set about having a similar model in Hereford, resulting in the Rose Garden, Ledbury Road. In 2006 she was asked to join the Trustees of Riding for the Disabled, became chairman, then patron, and continues to actively support them. More recently she supported the campaign to create the Whitehouse HUB and continues to actively support arranging activities. Being a councillor these days is almost a full time job, so she needs and accepts the Councillors allowance but she is public spirited enough not to ever claim expenses. TupsleyVoice It’s Fairtrade Fortnight! (25th February - 10th March)

It’s also the Fairtrade 40th Birthday Party ! THINK how we rely on people around the world even before we eat. Think about the technology, clothes, materials and everything else you use even before you eat breakfast, from your phones, to a shower, to your clothes such as school uniform. How much do we rely on people who live thousands of miles away from us? This year’s Fairtrade event is at The Whitehouse on Saturday 2nd March just after their BIG BREAKFAST. So, pop along for breakfast or morning coffee! There will be cake, a quiz, some fun and a Fairtrade stall Grateful thanks to all the helpers and the Co-op for their support

Hospice Plant Fair: The third annual Plant Fair at St Michael’s Hospice taking place on 3rd – 4th May will be a celebration of the joy of gardening. Plant lovers can browse a wide range of herbaceous perennials, bedding plants, annuals, trees, shrubs, alpines, bulbs, carnivorous and indoor plants grown by professional and amateur gardeners. In addition to plants, there will be fresh strawberries and asparagus; beautiful handcrafted wooden jewellery and home decor; cards, prints, coasters and mugs; wild bird food; and pottery and preserves. This year the Fair, which is free to enter, is expanding into the Hospice’s lower garden - a large, tranquil, open grass area. A golf buggy will transport visitors from the car park to the Plant Fair site. Hot and cold drinks plus fresh, homemade cakes will be available in our newly-refurbished cafe, all day on both days. Delicious two-course lunches will be served between 12pm and 2pm each day. There is no booking necessary for lunches. Can you help? If you enjoy gardening and are able to grow some extra plants to donate to us to sell at our Plant Fair, please get in touch with Gaynor by telephone 01432 852 630 or emailgwarren@smhospicehereford.org.

City Honour for Aylestone student Oh Yay! Oh Yay! Oh Yay! Let’s welcome Hereford’s new Junior Mayor, Katie Devey! On Tuesday 4th December, Katie, who is in Year 8 at Aylestone School, was crowned Junior Mayor of Hereford at an enrolment ceremony at Hereford Town Hall where she gave an acceptance speech. Katie was nominated by St John Ambulance, a cadet group which focuses on first aid and helping people in the community. Late October, Katie had an interview with the Mayor and two members of the youth council. The very next day she got a phone call telling her that she had got the position. Competing against five others, she apparently really stood out! According to the Mayor, Katie was chosen because she was a very confident speaker and is able to prioritise things. “This is a really good opportunity that will teach me life skills for my adult life. It will teach me communication skills, how to develop confidence and help me to be a role model for other young people in Hereford” said Katie. To prepare for the Junior Mayor enrolment ceremony Katie had a robe fitting. “The robes are quite heavy and hot” said Katie, adding “I didn’t enjoy wearing them when I had my enrolment ceremony because the heating was on and we had to sit through the Mayor’s meeting. However, I am looking forward to wearing them in the winter as they will be very toasty!”

New Junior Mayor, Katie Devey, with Councillor Sue Boulter, the 637th Mayor of Hereford

Congratulations, Katie! Well done for your good work! Aylestone is very proud to have you here. We are sure that you will do an excellent job and we wish you good luck! By Xei Tomamao for Aylestone School’s newsletter, written by pupils at the school
