THE 2020FEBRUARYFLOODGREATOF

Continued on Page 6

The Great Floods of February 2020 will live long in the memory of countless people throughout the country, especially those whose homes and businesses were flooded. Very many communities across the country from the valleys of South Wales to the Calder Valley, York and the Dales all in Yorkshire, and countless villages between, were severely flooded when Storm Dennis brought a massive rainfall to Britain during the weekend of 15/16 February. This followed intense rainfall the previous weekend which resulted in the ground being totally saturated and unable to absorb any of the Storm Dennis rainfall. The massive

flow of water coming off the Welsh mountains caused a rapid and huge rise in the water levels in the Rivers Wye and Lugg causing serious flooding of roads, houses and villages throughout Herefordshire. Tenbury Wells on the River Teme was especially badly hit. The water in the Wye rose to a peak of 6.11 metres at Wye Bridge, Hereford, at noon on Monday 17 February, which the Environment Agency reported as the highest for 200 years – though a plaque on the wall of Hereford Rowing Club suggested it had been exceeded in December 1960 by another 5” (12 cm). The water levels in the River Lugg also reached unprecedented levels.

At noon on the 17 February, the spectacular flooding of the houses in Greyfriars Avenue (next to Greyfriars Bridge) was inundated with TV crews from several channels reporting for the National and Local News, albeit this was by no means the first time most of the houses have been flooded. Interestingly their cameras did not show the unaffected new block of flats on the river bank in Greyfriars Avenue which were built on stilts with a high level walkway to the Bridge. This is perhaps the solution for all future buildings on flood plains, even if already protected by flood defences that are designed to prevent historic 1 in 100 year floods. The new multi million

The pillars, windows, screen and, where possible, walls were filled with wonderful wreaths from local schools, nurseries, clubs, organisations, businesses and individual families. The overall effect was amazing. Fiona and the Church thank all those who contributed to the display.

Revd. Martin Hardy, Hampton Park URC, Easter 2020

The Easter triumph of Christ over death signals the opportunity for all to embrace the opportunity for real and lasting change. We need to take seriously the radical effect of both Christ’s Christmas presence and the Easter sacrifice of his own life so that we may obtain forgiveness for our sins. We need to accept his offer to remake, renew, recreate our lives, moving all from darkness to light everlasting.

TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2020 | 3

I am aware that you may also be trying to save others by reducing the chocolate mountain: I am certain that together we shall prevail.

Oddly enough, schemes proposed by many others in the past have also sought to renew the quality of life for society in general. However, the goal posts keep moving, hence the mess left by yesterday’s rise in living standards has ecologists of today scratching their heads as to a solution.

St Paul’s Church challenged the congregation and the Tupsley community to make wreaths to decorate the church last Christmas. There were no rules; the wreaths could be any size, any colour and made of any material or foliage. All that was required was a little imagination and that everyone had fun creating something.

A Thought For Easter

Non-Members very welcome

At Easter, Christians recognise that authentic renewal is about our being a new creation. The structures of the world may be changed frequently by the politicians, economists, etc., etc., but they will still only have a fleeting significance. We too may be conditioned by those structures, but through the Christmas and Easter stories our spiritual being can be transformed; we can become a new creation.

The Church, and Fiona Richards who suggested and organised the event, were overwhelmed by the response. The church was filled with almost 100 wreaths in time for all the Christmas Services.

For once, this will be a change that does not leave a mess for future generations to clean up!

This year, the three day Holiday at Home, planned for those who find getting out difficult, or folk on their own who would love company, will be held on Tuesday July 28th to Thursday 30th; each day from 10am to 4pm at Hampton Park Church. The days will include good food, drinks, craft, puzzles and entertainment, all in good company with friends old and new. The cost is £30, and this includes a full day trip out on the Wednesday. If you have been before you won’t need persuading to come again....but do you know of anyone who hasn’t been before that would enjoy coming? You do not have to be a regular attender at the Coffee Shop or attend either St. Paul’s or Hampton Park churches, and several aren’t. Anyone is most welcome. Transport can be provided from home to and from Hampton Park Church for those who need it. The bookings will open early in May and can be made at the Coffee Shop or through St. Paul’s Office. Tel: 274 490.

Dear friends, as I write I am aware of the chocolates that still require sampling. Some of them have survived from Christmas, others, I admit, have been purchased recently. My eating them are my way of saving you for a better, healthier life style tomorrow.

Successes for Bishop’s Badminton Stars

15 year old Milly Gillson (CRT) has been selected for the U18 County badminton team. This is a fantastic achievement. She recently played a tournament in Worcester winning two of her singles games and her doubles against U17 players.

In the meantime, to close the year 2019, a raffle was held with some delicious prizes on offer. The funds raised were all used as part of the Coffee Shop’s continued involvement in local Watchcharities.outforother similar events during 2020.

Amidst all the excitement of the Christmas celebrations, the Tupsley Coffee Shop volunteers looked forward to a short break. Not for too long though, as they were only resting ready for this year’s complete year of serving tea and coffees to the visitors.

John Ellis

By the way, if you feel you could help on a Wednesday morning, please let any of the team know. New volunteers are always very welcome. A great way to meet and get to know many in the community.

The concert was well received by the audience who watched on proudly as their grandchildren performed.

Grandparents watch on proudly as the children perform

John Ellis, 1931 – 2020

Broadlands Primary School welcomed the grandparents of their children into school for a performance in February. The ‘Grandparents Concert’ was a chance for grandparents to visit the school and watch a show that was put on especially for them. The concert included performances from all of the classes who sang songs and shared some of the things they had been doing in school.

4 | TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2020

The Coffee Shop is open from 10:00 until 12:00 every Wednesday at Hampton Park URC, on the corner of Hampton Dene Road and Old Eign Hill. This is a community event to which all are invited.

Deputy Headteacher Robert Kay said; “We recognise the important relationship that children have with their grandparents. Our Grandparent’s Concert was a great opportunity to recognise this and invite them into school to see their grandchildren perform. It was a really lovely event and the staff worked hard to bring it all together. We work closely with the families of our children which is key to the fantastic learning experience we can offer the students who come to Broadlands.”

13 year old Bishop’s School pupil Hattie Herbert (ALU) travelled to Liverpool before Christmas for the U15 badminton silver tournament and came 3rd in her singles, 1st in doubles and 1st in mixed doubles. It was a tough competition and a long, tiring day but it was worth it. She has now been ranked 8th in the UK in the U14 age group. She has participated in many tournaments recently. A highlight being winning the U15 singles and doubles at Gloucester. She has now been selected to play for the U18 County badminton team despite being only 13.

It is sad to report that John Ellis, a well-known and extremely kind and generous man, and a Tupsley resident died peacefully on 23 January, aged 88, after quite a long illness that took him to a nursing home. John was most well-known for his Commercial Street Sports Shop, Ellis Sports, long since closed. John was also particularly well known for his great love of music and involvement with various charities.

For many years John was organist and choirmaster at Hereford Baptist Church and was often seen playing the organ at Tupsley Church at funerals, weddings and services. He would regularly play the piano for the Nursery Children to sing to. He was a long serving chairman of Hereford Municipal Charities, and a past president of Hereford Rotary Club which annually raises great sums of money for countless well deserving charities.

John will be sadly missed by all those who knew him, as well of course by his wife Anne, his children Mark and Sarah, and his grandchildren. Hereford Cathedral was extremely packed on 14 February with people wanting to show their love and respect of John at a Service of Thanksgiving for his life.

Please ring Keith Pratley, Church Grounds manager (Tel: 01432 357 770) if you are interested OR just come along to one of the Tuesday or Thursday morning sessions.

Do you have a family grave in Tupsley Churchyard, or plan a grave there. St Pauls Church, Tupsley, has a duty to keep it tidy for those who attend burials or visit graves – mainly members of the Tupsley Community. The charges for a burial do not cover the cost of professional maintenance of the graveyard, so the work has to be done entirely by volunteers. At present there are very few people attending church services who have the time, or are able, to do this. We currently have just 2 pairs of volunteers who attend very regularly from 9 – 1pm every Tuesday and Thursday mornings. This is insufficient to prevent the grass growing too long at times, due to there being a huge area of grass that needs to be cut – especially during the summer months when the grass is growing very fast. The mowers are motorised, so there is not a lot of effort needed but you will walk one or two miles up and down the rows guiding the mower which is excellent exercise. No need to pay gym fees!

Thankyou for all of your responses to our survey about the requirement for a youth group at The Whitehouse Hub. Results are now in … and it’s all looking good for a teenage Youth Group! We are currently compiling the results.

Friday 10 April - Good Friday

Please consider joining one of the teams to help out, even if only for just one day a month, and perhaps as little as 2 hours a session. We could also possibly start a 3rd session on another day, or one evening during the long summer evenings, if that would suit you better.

Whitehouse Youth Group UPDATE

Sadly a lot of houses in Putson were flooded due to the Wye overflowing further downstream than the scheme. BBC Songs of Praise featured the excellent work that St Martins Church did to receive donated clothes and food to distribute to the many flooded homes.

The flow under the Old Wye Bridge left only a very small air gap under the arches resulting in the bridge being closed to traffic and pedestrians as a precaution against it collapsing. This was possible, especially if the water level had risen further, possibly due to blockage of an arch by fallen tree trunks. The Victoria Footbridge deck was submerged, even at its highest point. Tupsley got off fairly lightly with just Eign Road, under the railway bridge, and Ledbury Road at the Texaco Garage both submerged with water and closed to traffic – as was the Texaco Garage. The main road through Hampton Bishop was flooded as far as Mordiford Bridge, where the water was deep enough for flood water to reach the bridge deck. The road was still closed on 26 February since the Environment Agency placed 5 very large pumps on Mordiford Bridge (reputably pumping 1 cubic metre of water a second) to empty the village of flooding. Most of the villagers had been marooned in their houses for about 6 days unless they could get a lift by tractor. Sadly two houses in the village were flooded. The flooding in Hampton Bishop was repeatedly reported on the National and Local news and was one of the last 2 places in the country to still have an official NRA “ Danger to Life Flood Warning”, before similar warnings a day later when a second flood hit the River Severn. Inside this issue of Tupsley Voice will be seen several spectacular photographs taken in Hereford around noon on Monday 17 February when the Wye was at its peak

pound Hereford city flood defences were not overtopped. At Asda the water was approximately 60 cm (2 ft) below the flood defence spill-over level. The Wye water level at its peak at the moveable barriers downstream of the old Wye Bridge appears, from a photo, to be about 20cm (9 inches) below spill over level. Thankfully a very successful flood scheme that has protected very many houses south of Greyfriars Bridge from flooding.

Look out for the signs of celebrations in Tupsley throughout 2020!

The college’s huge reputation attracts several hundreds of students from homes a long way from Hereford. Students feel supported, achieve excellent results, and enjoy their College experience.

Whitehouse Family Craft Sessions

Results are consistently strong. In 2019, 483 students went on to study at university, and 214 went to the Higher Tier (Russell Group) universities. It has consistently been one of the top performers in the country over a ten year period.

The College prides itself with state of the art facilities, including: specialist classrooms, laboratories, a professional standard theatre, music studio, recital room, green room, library, café, sports hall, 3G pitch, netball/tennis courts, Well-Being Centre, and a Careers Centre; as well as lots of study and social spaces.

Why not join our Branch this Spring so that you can join in the centenary celebrations. Phone Gill Tudor on 01432 379 349 or just go along to one of the meetings.

Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th June - Little Marcle & Putley

The craft sessions will run every two months on Saturdays from 11am -3pm and refreshments will be provided. The 2020 dates are 14th March, 9th May, 11th July, 12th September & 14th November. Pop the dates in your diaries.

Students receive specialist careers guidance and personalised career pathways based on their strengths and ambitions. An extensive enrichment programme is designed to underpin a foundation of excellent education with a wide range of opportunities to enhance employability and enriching their College experience. Students benefit from the College’s strong links with top universities, which opens opportunities for them to receive expert advice and professional insight into their areas of interest.

The adjacent photograph is of the Tupsley WI Branch members, it is believed soon after the branch was formed in 1920. These ladies had decided after the First World War to form a local branch of the Women’s Institute. They met at the Parish Rooms in Ledbury Road, which was directly across the road from Crownlea Close, between Quarry Road and the Rose & Crown public house. The Parish Rooms had walls and roof made of corrugated steel and was painted red all over, so the photograph with a brick building behind was obviously not taken there.

On 14th March we are also hoping to have the local policing team attending on the day to carry out security marking for your bikes. 11th July will also be our Whitehouse community fun day, so there will be other fantastic activities happening alongside our crafts.

The Whitehouse Hub has received a small lottery grant to run some ‘family craft sessions’ over the rest of the year. These will be free and will be open to all ages! If you have some ‘crafty’ skills and would like to offer assistance with this, then please call in and have a chat with us at The Whitehouse. We would also be grateful if you could have any craft items and raffle prizes you would be able to donate to help these days go well! If you have suggestions of any crafts that you would like to try then please let us know as we are still planning the programme.

The school have reported that:- throughout the month of January we have been celebrating our 50th anniversary. The children have learned lots about how we lived in the 1970s. We’ve tasted 70s food, listened to 70s music, discovered 70s fashion and events of the 1970s. This month of discovery culminated in a 70s day, where we dressed in the fashion of the time, which we all enjoyed enormously! (See Photo Above) On the 31st January we opened the school for past staff, children and the community to come and look at the children’s work and photos from our archives. Our birthday cake was cut by the Right Worshipful Mayor of Hereford Cllr. Kath Hey, who also, as a child, attended Hampton Dene. The school PTFA provided some delicious 1970s style food and drinks!

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) wanted to develop an initiative whereby we could help our community and therefore sought advice from the staff at North Denes Primary School, Great Yarmouth, who already run a successful school food-bank. The SLT also consulted the Hereford Food-bank who have offered their support and given invaluable information.

In January 1970 the sparkling new Hampton Dene School opened its doors to its first 95 pupils. The Head Teacher Mr Gage, previously a very successful teacher at St Paul’s Primary school, had been chosen from applicants to organise the setting up of the school 6 months earlier. There were staff to appoint; furniture and equipment to purchase. Mr Gage was then head teacher for 17 years until 1987. The Head Teachers during the 50 years have been:-

Registration with Environmental Health was successfully completed on Monday 9th December and we provided food parcels to help families over the festive period.

Staff and parents have donated extra items from their weekly shop and the children are fundraising to buy additional stock. As a school, our children, staff and parents feel strongly about the importance of working together to provide essential supplies to those in need.

Donations of dried foods, cereals, tinned foods, sauces and condiments and cleaning products can be made to St Paul’s Primary School, Hampton Dene Road, Hereford.

Families can collect their food parcels from the school or, if they prefer from St Paul’s Church. We are grateful to the church for their support with this.

At St Paul’s Primary School, we are always striving to find ways to support our families and the wider community. Through this work we have identified a need for a school based food-bank, due to ever increasing financial pressures. We are aware that factors such as redundancy, illness and bereavement can impact a family’s day to day living.

The project is also increasing our pupils sense of social responsibility and providing the opportunity to participate in some community service.
