The Whitehouse Community Hub Chairman Keith Davenport and his wife Anita at the ‘Dainty Tea and Royal Hatscot’ in June.

Whitehouse Community Hub is starting to bloom Since the last issue of Tupsley Voice a lot has been happening at the Whitehouse Community Hub. Firstly, the building’s got a name, the ‘Community Hub’. Renaming the building was made following a study of the of the original community survey when North Tupsley residents were asked to put forward ideas. Also it’s hard not to notice that volunteers, especially Fred Greenow (82), have cleared the weeds out of the little f lower bed and planted wild f lower seeds. Now that the f lowers are in full bloom, the bed looks beautiful and we have had lots of compliments. On Monday June 20th, we held a ‘Dainty Tea’ and ‘Royal Hascot’ to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday, this was organised by the Board of the Whitehouse and volunteers. The event was well supported and attended by over 80 people, including the Vicar, Nick Armstrong. The Royal Hatscot part of the event, organised by Councillor Lloyd Hayes, was popular and included an array of Hats from ‘Hatrick’ of Hereford, which were modelled by

youth from Close House and the Junior Mayor, Angharad Knight (an Aylestone College student). We are in the process of installing units into the kitchenette, which was once a store room. We would like to thank Heineken for their generous donation of £500 towards this small part of the project. The Whitehouse now has connected hot water at both ends of the building, fed by Eco-friendly tanks. This is thanks to the hard work of a local plumber and our Chairman, Keith Davenport. Electricians, Melcon, have made safe and renewed some of the old electrics, and also installed security lighting around the building. Keith’s wife Anita, George and other volunteers have been busy painting the entrance and toilet block. It was during one such stint of painting that the Manager from the Hereford ‘Crown Decorating Centre’ in Grandstand Business Centre, came and kindly offered us any paint we need. If you want to volunteer your skills and time we would be very grateful, especially if you are a painter and decorator.

The Tupsley Whitehouse Tea Club afternoons continue to be popular and are now taking place in the Whitehouse. These are held the 2nd Monday of the month 2pm until 4pm and everyone is welcome. If you come along to the Tea Club it’s a good time to meet with neighbours and have a chat over a drink and a piece of cake. The Whitehouse is also open most Wednesday afternoons for a ‘Drop In’ session between 2pm and 4pm, and subject to availability, you will be able to buy the council’s green bags. It’s a good time to bring your questions, ideas, offers of voluntary time, or to just come and say hello. During these summer months you might have noticed the banners all the way down Whittern Way, promoting cycling for women. This is because Shirley’s Wheel’s Bicycle Ambassadors have been meeting at the Whitehouse for an organised weekly Saturday morning ride, beginning at 10am. Continued Page 3

Crowds enjoying Picnic In The Park 2016

2016 Picnic in the Park Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG) once again worked tremendously hard to organise a most successful Picnic in the Park at the Quarry on 23rd July. CTCG want to thank all those who helped to make Picnic in the Park another great success. It would not have been possible without the dedication of CTCG members, wonderful volunteers and generous sponsors - Tupsley Butchers (delicious sausages!), Mercia Radio Telephones, Arrow Plant Hire and Hereford City Council. Thank you to all and to the public for coming along and enjoying the various attractions in the sunshine! The money raised will be ploughed back into our next event - Bonfire night on 5th November. This year it falls on a Saturday, so we are already anticipating a great turnout and will therefore need lots of help on the night. If you could spare some time to volunteer (especially marshalling) then please contact us via face book, our website www.ctcghereford. weebly.com or on Twitter. We look forward to seeing you. TupsleyVoice A Mess Can Be Beautiful One of our first memories here in Tupsley is getting our first Tupsley Voice delivered – complete with shocking front-page revelation of our whole family! So there goes a first year!

Nick Armstrong providing just some of the entertainment

Holiday at Home 2016 This year over 30 local residents enjoyed 3 days of companionship, good food, and entertainment at the 12th annual Holiday at Home. For those who don’t already know, Holiday at Home is run jointly by St. Paul’s and Hampton Park Churches for the Tupsley community. It is sponsored by our community coffee shop and is very much enjoyed and appreciated by all who come - including those who help and support the annual event. This year it ran from 2nd to 4th August with the customary handycrafts, games, quizzes and activities. Pam’s lunches are a high spot on Tuesday and Thursday where the opportunity to have an excellent lunch and a chat in the company of other locals is really appreciated by many in our community who often eat alone. Wednesday is the ‘day out’ and this year the visit was to Weobley Church where the BBC chose the same day as us to run the ‘One Show’ from the village. Fortunately, our joint objective in avoiding each other was largely successful and, once we had parked, we had an interesting talk by Pat Millington on the history of St Peter and St Paul’s Church. One of our minibuses had the distinction of being driven by Jim Kenyon - the current Mayor of Hereford! Lunch on Wednesday was taken at Oakchurch where the opportunity for some retail therapy was not to be missed. On Thursday afternoon, - the traditional spot for a concert - we were entertained by Tony Bailey and by Revd Nick Armstrong - whose previously hidden talents will certainly be called upon on other occasions. The holiday ended with a strawberry and cream tea. As ever, such events are only possible with the help of many local people (from the Mayor downwards) and we are all truly grateful to them for giving their time and making their talents available to the less able in the Tupsley Community.

It’s been a huge privilege for us, a year of daily discoveries. When we took up the post last February, we’d actually not even seen inside our house or the churches, and only driven once through the parish. So we then discovered (after saying ‘yes’) that we’ve been loaned a super house in the best place to live! Yet even that fades into the background as over the last 12 months we’ve discovered the most amazing people, joining some of you on the strange bittersweet journeys that life brings us, and of course walking with hundreds of children (yes there are times when we’ve literally been able to count hundreds out of every window!) at the start of their long lives. Alison and I have been so delighted that we can be involved together (with several others) in all the schools and childcare immediately around us. I’m reading a book I found in Newent (fabulous Bookshop & Coffeehouse! Good News Centre), whose title appealed to me. It’s called Beautiful Mess. No I’m not really a tidy! person but that’s not the main point. Rather, it picks up the wonderful tangle of possibilities which appear around the edges of our lives, much as God wove an ordered universe out of chaos. Perhaps like you, I’ve been discovering how easy it is to miss the greatest moments or inspired opportunities around busy commitments and narrow vision. Observations, actions, or people, who transform a day and we realise later were so nearly missed. I’m glad too that our churches have messy edges: an open door, and many ways in, exploring and tasting, as well as many ways we get out, joining in all that’s beckoning us around. As an expression of this, I’m so pleased that St Paul’s Church is now open during every day (typically 9-5), a place to claim those moments of peace and quiet discovery, for hundreds who pass the doors every day. I’m excited about two more particular possibilities on our beautiful messy edges this Autumn. First, together as our two churches, you’ll see signs for Messy Church we’re running at Hampton Park, at 3.30pm on the third Tuesday afternoon most months. A brilliant way for all ages to meet, eat, mix, have fun and be thoroughly welcome while also discovering Jesus and his story. Come and taste on 20 September, from 3.30pm. And second, at last we see The Whitehouse up and running and rapidly gaining new life as a vibrant Community Hub, with events and groups rapidly booking in. But more importantly, there is a brilliant atmosphere of welcome and knowing that together we can do stuff together that undoes the loneliness and dullness of life. I can’t wait to see the new creativities out of chaos, in the Beautiful Mess of a place that holds special memories for many, and great possibilities for many more. Nick Armstrong, vicar of St Paul’s

Tupsley Churchyard Thankyou and Please

Farewell Mr Riddell

Having now completed our first year here, and seen our first annual cycle of nature around St Paul’s, I wanted to pass on a couple of things about our very special churchyard.

Hampton Dene school teacher Mick Riddell is retiring after 14 very happy years in what he describes as a ‘fabulous’ school. He finished by writing a hilarious musical production for Y5 and Y6 pupils to perform about the staff and governors’ preparations for a school inspection when a series of unfortunate mishaps threaten the expectation of a top grading. After 31 years in education, he now looks forward to new challenges, which include writing more musical productions and following the fortunes more closely of his favourite football team – Celtic FC.

First, a huge thankyou to our volunteers who have poured in their time and energy over the year, making great progress cutting back some wild excesses, and generally keeping the most visited parts and paths in great shape. Special thanks to Jim Kenyon (and friends) for arranging extra work parties, giving time and setting up some major pruning on the north-east border. This year we had unfortunate mower breakdowns over the peak growing period, and had to fight hard to catch up. Do bear in mind that many less recent sections of graves are deliberately maintained as conservation areas, cut back only at certain times, to encourage the great variety of flora we have. But especially during May and June we can certainly do with extra volunteers – always liaising carefully with us to ensure we manage the work and focus energies well. Do contact Jayne Frankland, Parish Secretary at the Parish Office Tel: 01432 274 490, beneficeoffice@stpaulshereford.org.uk if you could offer help at any time, and thank you!

Computer crashing or in need of a tune-up?

And then a plea – about benches. It’s good to have some placed around to spend time there, and often these have been given in memory of someone remembered in love. Please do remember permission needs to be asked of me (the vicar being the legal owner of the churchyard), and that we do reserve the right to remove benches which have degenerated badly, or are no longer safe. (We would always try to contact a known family link with the last contact we have.) We may also move benches which are placed without permission. Many thanks for your understanding and kindness, as we enjoy this special place together. Nick Armstrong, vicar of St Paul’s nick.armstrong@stpaulshereford.org.uk

TupsleyVoice Come and See The Refurbished Hospice Building

Bishops Pupils Visit Hay Festival 2016

Because of you...Herefordshire now has a world-class Hospice. Last year, the new 20-bed Inpatient Unit opened and is now providing patients with the best possible hands-on nursing care.

On the 27th May we set off to the Hay Book Festival, set in a field on the outskirts of Hay on Wye.

This summer, the redevelopment of the original St Michael’s Hospice building was completed and will continue to provide support to people living with a terminal illness and their families. This building now incorporates the Education Centre and offices for Family Support, Day Services and Therapies as well as counselling/examination rooms for Day Hospice patients, their family and carers. If you would like to come and take a tour of the new Hospice, please call Denise Bishop on 01432 851 000 or email dbishop@st-michaels-hospice.org.uk

We split into three groups, each seeing a varied mixture of authors and an adapted and fun performance of Hamlet by the Royal Shake-speare Company. My group saw Francis Hardinge who talked about all her books and in particular her latest The Lie Tree. She was a particularly funny and engrossing author who I thought was brilliant. Patrick Ness, an author I had not heard of, was the main attraction in our group. He was very humorous and connected well with the audience of 500 young people. He was pro-moting his recent book ‘The Rest of us Just Live Here’ a very original, adventure story which he inspired me to read and I really liked very much. We were able to visit the book store during lunch. The Hay trip was brilliant and I would recommend to all especially bookworms. Finlay Bel - studentl

TupsleyVoice Ofsted states Hereford Sixth Form College Outstanding Following its recent Sixth Form College of the Year Award, Hereford Sixth Form College was inspected by Ofsted in June. The Inspector stated, “The College is outstanding. The award of Sixth Form College of the Year was highly deserved and recognised many years of consistent excellent performance. All programmes of study are of high quality and A level and GCSE results all show considerable value added to students, with a very high proportion of A*-B grades.” In addition he praised the enrichment activities, support and guidance and the wider opportunities which the College offers to students, resulting in a far higher proportion than the national average achieving entry to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. “Music, Sport, Drama are all encouraged and developed for most students to a very high standard. The College has a positive and aspirational culture, putting students at the heart of all activity.”

After completing her A Levels at Hereford Sixth Form College, Emily was offered an internship with the College’s Drama & Theatre Studies Department, which saw her assisting with lessons, helping out on performances and supervising on trips to shows.

Hampton Dene School children with the street name they chose

Children Name New Housing Development The children in the KS1 LCC classes at Hampton Dene Primary School have been learning about houses and homes. As part of the topic they learned about how houses are built and were invited, by Mike Bayliss (the contractor), to visit his convenient site off Gurney Avenue where be was building 10 affordable homes. They visited the building site several times, observing the building work at various stages of construction. To their delight the children were then asked if we would like to propose a name for the new cul de sac of houses. After much thought and discussion they proposed “Hampton Rise,” which to their joy was adopted.

Emily, who lives in Tupsley, said, “Hereford Sixth Form College has given me opportunities that I could not have received from anywhere else. I was given the chance to work at Hay Festival as a Production Runner, gain training with Avolites as well as working on several shows through my two years of study. The College also supported me with my application to the National Youth Theatre (NYT) in 2015. At the NYT, I was lucky enough to work with professional stage managers, make friends and even secured a placement on the West End stage. I was also really well supported with my applications to drama schools, including my portfolio and interview techniques. Without Hereford Sixth Form College I would not have received a place at such a prestigious drama school.”

Not only did Bright Sparks have a full week of celebrations before our summer break with seaside games, cake making, party games and a visit from Pedro the Music Man, we also had a few tears as a few Sparks left us to start their journey at “Big School”. We hope you all settle in well to your new places and do comeback and visit us soon. Not only that, we also had one of our great parents let us in on a big challenge of theirs!! Maria Teale is going to be running the first 28km of the Thames Path Challenge this September to help raise funds for new resources for us. Being a charity run group, Maria says “my aim is to raise £250 to go towards technology and other equipment the nursery requires, though I would love to exceed this amount! This run is a huge challenge for me but there are not many OUTSTANDING early years’ settings north of Hereford that are as affordable as this nursery. My children have blossomed since starting at Bright Sparks and I cannot express the thanks I have to all of the staff....they are all truly amazing!” If you would like to help Maria in her challenge please either donate to her GoFund Me page which can be found on https://www.gofundme.com/28gwwznno or please do pop in. From September 2016 Bright Sparks will now be OPEN: Mondays 8.30-4.30pm and Tuesday to Friday 8.30-4pm Bright Sparks , (Old Site) Broadlands Primary School, Prospect Walk, Tupsley, Hereford. HR1 1NZ If you would like your child to start their Early Years Journey with us at Bright Sparks too, please do give us a call on 01432 278249 and arrange a visit or alternatively take a look at our website www.brightsparkshereford.co.uk and email us to get further information.

Bishops School Humanities studies We have continued our commitment to enrichment activities and off site visits. This year has seen Humanities visits to Weston Super-Mare in June with GCSE Geographers, Belgium WW1 Battlefields in July with Year 9 students. The Year 10 Geographers were once again lucky with the weather on this year’s trip to Weston-Super-Mare. This was the destination used to collect the primary data for their controlled assessment based on tourism. The two coach loads of students had the opportunity to use their fieldwork skills by carrying out questionnaires, environmental surveys, taking photographs and completing pedestrian counts. Now, the work continues back in class where they will be analysing and interpreting the data for their controlled assessment pieces. In anticipation of the new 9-1 GCSE course we have begun a series of local off site visits to Tupsley Quarry investigating ‘How has a quarry been restored to benefit a locality?’ and the Lugg Meadows, ‘Land use and biodiversity in an ecosystem?’. This has given students an opportunity to explore and understand more about the Geography of the local area. Students needed to complete a controlled assessment style task.

Sascha Kindred took his Olympic medals to St Pauls School St Pauls School “Olympic Games”

St Pauls School Olympic Week As the Summer term drew to a close, the children at St Paul’s were able to enjoy a wonderfully creative week, making lots of lovely crafts, learning all about the Olympics and its host country – Brazil. The beginning of the week began with lots of fun activities prepared by staff ranging from participating in a mini-Olympics to making medals or musical instruments and baking biscuits; it was certainly an action packed beginning to the week. Tuesday was an extremely exciting morning as Rosie (in class RS) asked a family friend, Sascha Kindred – Paralympic Olympic, World and European swimming champion, to lead the school worship – what an inspirational man! All children and staff were completely enthralled by stories of his journey to become ‘the best of the best’ and were all in awe of his achievements to date. He truly was a perfect example of our current Christian value, endeavour. Later in the morning, children in Year 1 had a surprise treat - Mrs Thomasson taught them some Samba rhythms. After learning a routine and performing it in groups, they had a brilliant ‘wiggle final’! As well as completing lots of super activities in the classroom based on our Olympic theme, Hereford Carnival Arts and The Pink Elephant Circus worked with every class to create decorative props for a carnival procession and provided the children with the opportunity to learn a variety of new circus skills, throwing and catching the diablo, spinning plates, rolling devil sticks and hula hooping.

Bishops Opal Coast Trip 27 pupils, accompanied by 3 staff, set off not too early on a Monday morning for our French Trip. We were blessed with lovely weather, perfect for all of our activities and for the beach! Our accommodation, whilst not 5*, was fine for our needs and the food was plentiful. We were based right by the sea (and a fishing port, as we noticed early one morning) just south of Boulogne. We met the craziest baker (who makes, rolling by hand, 4000 croissants per week), we spent time playing on the beach, we took the tourist train round Le Touquet and we watched beautiful high quality chocolate being made. We also visited France’s biggest sea life centre, Nausicaa. Students did their best to interact with French people, in French. We practised language, learnt some history and geography and did some research into gravity and forces at the Bagatelle theme park. As usual, our students were a credit to the school. TupsleyVoice Fuchia Association Annual Show There was a glorious display of colour at Hampton Park United Reformed Church when Hereford and District Fuchsia Association (HADFA) celebrated their 20th Annual Show on 6th August. The weather this year has not been the kindest overall for growing Fuchsias - sometimes being too cold and too wet and at other times being too dry and hot!! Fuchsias do not thrive in the heat we experienced just before the show and the committee were concerned that we wouldn’t have the large number of entries we usually have. However, members came up trumps once again and the public that came along were well rewarded.

Shirley and the Bicycle Ambassadors – (L – R) Louise, Anne, Maria and Pj – all of whom answer to ‘Shirley’!

Shirley’s Wheels Autumn events at the Whitehouse Community Hub Thanks to the Whitehouse Community Hub team, Shirley and the Bicycle Ambassadors, will be ‘at home’ in the Hub most Wednesdays and Saturdays this autumn. They will be running bunting workshops, something called ‘Power Tools for Women’ and other fun stuff to do, including 3 days of Playing Out in the half term holiday. The next big Shirley event is ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll – The Whittern Way Wheelie Big Ride’ on Saturday October 1st 2016. Save the date for a day of fun with Carnival Arts and Pink Elephant Circus and celebrate all the gorgeous tastes, sounds and colours of autumn. So, if you see the bunting and bicycles and want find out more about how to be a part of the action, please drop in and have a drink at the hub with Shirley and The Ambassadors. The Chairman’s Trophy for Best in Show went to John Mayers for a fuchsia species a lot of people wouldn’t recognise as a fuchsia! One called Fuchsia Procumbens and the judges Peter and Diane Boor from Swindon (who also presented the cups and trophies) commented that they had never seen the variety grown so well. Prizes for the overall highest number of points in show for the ladies went to Audrey Mayers and for the gentlemen, Peter Spitzmaul. The association will hold its next meeting at Hampton Park United Reformed Church on Tuesday 27h September at 7.30 p.m. when the speaker will be giving a talk on Auriculas. Anyone who is interested would be made most welcome.

Looking for an old schoolfriend from Tupsley - Vivienne Lee Can any Tupsley Voice reader help this lady find an old school friend who lived in Tupsley in the 60’s and early 70’s and possibly longer. I wonder if you could help me, please? I am trying to locate an old school friend who I haven’t seen since the 1970s. Vivienne Lee and I met when we started at Ledbury Grammar School (LGS) in September 1968. We were firm friends until I left in 1971 and corresponded for a couple of years until it fizzled out when we would have both been moving on again. She was a girl-guide. Vivienne lived at 50 Church Road Tupsley Hereford (HR1 1RS). I believe she had always lived there but don’t know which Primary School she attended. She was the 2nd of 4 children, having 3 brothers - in order: Adrian, Vivienne, David & Michael. None of the boys came to LGS. I believe that on leaving school in 1973 she went on to train as a radiographer. It is possible that her parents are still alive. They were quite young parents. There is no hidden agenda - we were good friends. We are not getting any younger. Mary Barker (Mrs.)(nee Hebden) If any reader has any information please contact Tupsley Voice and we will pass it on to Mrs Barker or send you her contact details. TUPSLEY VOICE AUTUMN 2016 | 11
