Tupsley Councillor is new Hereford Mayor Tupsley Councillor, Jim Kenyon was installed in May as the 635th Mayor of Hereford. He is a Hereford boy through and through, was born in Breinton on the edge of the City and enjoyed growing up in the countryside. He attended St.Owen’s and St. James’s primary schools followed by The Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School. In 1985 he joined the army and learnt a trade with the Royal Corps of Transport, later moving to Germany and serving with The British Army on the Rhine. Always up for a challenge, in 1989 he joined 5 Airborne Brigade and served in various theatres until he left in 2000 after a parachute accident. Councillor Kenyon with his four children and two grandchildren

Picnic in the Park 2016 Central Tupsley Community Group will be working hard towards soon bringing you another great Picnic in the Park on Saturday 23rd July. This will be our third one and we would like to see lots of you there to make it memorable and successful. Please come along and join in the fun in the Quarry (or even help out on the day!). For more details please go to our new website -

Acton Scott Visit St Pauls School reception class had a fabulous day at Acton Scott Historic Working Farm. They enjoyed making scarecrows, seeing lots of different animals and loved meeting Charlie and Joe, the farm’s two shire horses!

ctcghereford.weebly.com, or look us up on face book. Before then we will be holding our very first car boot sale, to take place at Brightsparks Nursery (previously Broadlands school), on Sunday 5th June 10-12 am. Unfortunately this will take place before you can read this but, if successful, we will have more. Look out for information on our web site or face book page.

On leaving the army he bought the Victory Pub on St. Owen Street and started the Spinning Dog Brewery, latterly known as the Hereford Brewery. That was 16 years ago and the business is still going strong. Over the years he has been involved in fund raising activities for a wide range of local charities. He is well known for working tirelessly for groups city wide, and nothing is too much trouble. In 2011 he became a City and County Councillor and around the same time he helped set up the Central Tupsley Community Group. The group led by Jim have put on a variety of events at the Quarry such as “Picnic in the Park” and a Bonfire night fire and firework display, and constantly seeks opportunities to improve local amenities. Jim is also a regular visitor to the weekly

coffee shop at Hampton Park Church and can always be relied upon by the many attendees and elsewhere for advice or support. Jim likes to keep fit. Between all his many councillor duties and community activities he plays rugby for Hereford Rugby Club, roller skates at The Core, Foley Trading Estate, and goes rafting and cycling. He will do anything at least twice! Councillor Kenyon has four children and two grandchildren who play a huge part in his life and keep him real every day. He is passionate about the City of Hereford, and therefore is looking forward to serving everyone as Hereford’s 635th mayor and having a little fun along the way. The Charities he has chosen to support during his Mayoral year are ‘Wheeled Sports 4 Hereford’, Hereford Veterans Support and ELY Memorial Fund – a Tupsley based charitable organisation that provides assistance with funeral costs if a family loses a young person in a road traffic accident.

Rose Garden Summer Fete The Rose Garden, Ledbury Road, is holding a Summer Fete on Saturday 6th August between 2pm & 4pm. Hopefully the weather will be wonderful so that the fete can be held outside but if not, it will still take place inside. Do come!

Primary School Chess Tournament On Sunday 24th April, twelve children represented St Paul’s Primary School at the Mercia Chess Megafinal, at Hereford Cathedral School, where they played the best chess players from schools in Herefordshire and Shropshire. For many of the children, this was their first time at a tournament, and playing 6 chess games in one day requires a lot of brain power. Everyone enjoyed this event, and achieved points. Congratulations to all of the children for playing so well, and with good sportsmanship. Four of the children achieved enough points to qualify for the National final. It was great to see the support the children gave to each other before and after each round - really good team spirit.

For inclusions please email your information to tupsleyvoice@hotmail.co.uk The Autumn Issue copy deadline is Friday 12th August. Publication will be on 3rd September. Send us details of events taking place before or very soon after the Winter Issue publication date of 3rd December as well as news of past events.

Tupsley war veteran honoured by France At the last meeting of the Hereford and The Marches Aircrew Association, Mr. Bill Morris of Brookside, Tupsley, was presented with the French Legion d’Honneur medal by Lady Darnley, the Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire. Now aged 91, Bill was an air gunner with No 460 squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force, f lying on Lancaster bombers out of Lincolnshire. He was involved in active support of the D-Day landings in June 1944 and subsequent bombing missions over Germany. Bill completed over thirty wartime bombing operations before his 20th birthday. Lady Darnley said “it was fitting to make the presentation among friends and other veterans of the Hereford and The Marches Aircrew Association”. The Legion d’Honneur was established by Napoleon in 1802 as France’s highest award for excellence in military conduct and the award was granted by President Francois Hollande to veterans who took an active part in the liberation of France in World War II and to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings. 4

A Wildlife Trust staff pointing out a snake’s head fritillary

Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s Fritillary Day on Lugg Meadows was a great success In May, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust hosted their annual Fritillary Day, welcoming visitors to their Lower House Farm headquarters in Tupsley and leading guided walks across Lugg Meadow to spot the rare snake’s head fritillary flower. While visitors were simply enjoying the beauty of the flowers, a team of volunteers, coordinated by the Floodplain Meadows Partnership, were hard at work undertaking a detailed survey of the flowers. With the support of local volunteers, the Floodplain Meadows Partnership and Natural England have been monitoring this species on Lugg Meadow for five years to develop an understanding of how the population of this wildflower species responds to changes in weather and climate over time. A programme of consistent, long-term monitoring will enable the Trust to observe the impacts of climatic events on this beautiful species. As an iconic flower in a traditional floodplain farming system, the snake’s-head fritillary is now a rare species, found on fewer than 30 wild floodplain meadow sites in the UK. On Lugg Meadow, snake’s-head fritillaries provide a spectacular display and are visited by many nature-lovers each year. Alongside the guided walks, the Trust’s WildPlay team ran a Buzzing Blooms Explorer Walk for younger visitors, which was fully booked. Plant Wild, Henryka Jewellery and Bea Bromhead-Wragg showcased fritillary-themed gifts and plants and Rocket Café served up pizza to hungry walkers. Event organiser, Stas Calder, commented: “In the past we have had to postpone the event due to flooding but the fritillaries have flowered right on time this year and looked wonderful.” Over 100 people attended the event which raised over £1000 to support the work of Herefordshire Wildlife Trust.

TupsleyVoice Lugwardine Gardens Open for Hospice Two Lugwardine gardens are being opened to the public on Sunday 26 June 2 – 5:30pm to raise funds for St Michaels Hospice. They are The Steppes, Hem Hill, Lumber Lane, Lugwardine, HR1 4AL and 23 Traherne Close, Lugwardine, HR1 4AL (across the A438 from St Mary’s School). Most of both gardens are accessible to wheelchair users. The owners of the Steppes have spent 15 years transforming their garden and created many spaces and functions. If you care to walk to the top of the garden past grazing sheep, you can sit and view the distant Black Mountains. The garden at Treherne Close was designed and made by the owner in Spring 2014. Here there are mixed herbaceous borders with topiary, silver birch and fruit trees. A pond is home to Koi carp and goldfish. Aylestone pupil Rosie Sayer interviewing Mindu Hornich, Holocaust survivor.

Anne Frank touring exhibition comes to Hereford Early in March Aylestone College was the base of a touring Anne Frank exhibition for two weeks. Several pupils trained to be Peer Guides to explain the exhibition to visitors from several primary and secondary schools. One of them, Rosie Sayer who is also a young BBC reporter, interviewed Mindu Hornich, a Holocaust survivor, who gave presentations to visitors to the exhibition. Another young BBC reporter studied the exhibition and wrote the following report about Anne Frank:Anne Frank was a Jewish girl born in Germany in 1929 who went into hiding in the Second World War to escape the Nazis. In 1933 Hitler became head of the German government this meant the Frank family fled to Netherlands. They lived in Merwedeplein and the father Otto got a business and Anne and her older sister Margot went to school. Then World War 2 started and Germany invades the Netherlands on May 10th 1940. They find a safe place in an annex with four other Jews living there as well. When Anne was younger the Nazis banned all Jews from going to the same schools, with this in mind we think that the quality of her diary was very good considering she didn’t have a proper education. The Nazis made every Jew wear a gold star badge (Star of David) which then identified them to everyone around them as a Jew. The types of people who the Nazis also targeted were disabled people, homosexuals, gypsies and black people, these people were killed straight away. These types of people nowadays are treated with the same amount of respect. This could be because the diary could have influenced people today to treat others around us equally. Written by an Aylestone pupil who was an Anne Frank Peer Guide and also a young BBC reporter 6

Their 2015 awards were featured in the 2015 Winter Issue of Tupsley Voice. The garden will be open once again this year on Saturday 30th July from 2 – 6pm. TupsleyVoice Mercia Police Notices: Dogs can die in hot cars

Hereford College of Arts

With the weather forecast set to be warmer, please remember not to leave dogs in parked cars.

Hereford College of Arts is throwing open its doors for a public viewing of the achievements of all final year students.

Even if a car is parked in the shade, a car can still retain more heat than an open area which can pose a huge risk to a dog left inside.

Last year its Summer Show attracted over 5000 visitors and even greater numbers are expected this year. A great opportunity for prospective students to find out more about the courses on offer.

On longer journeys, make sure you have water available for the dog and have the windows open or air conditioning running to ensure your pet doesn’t overheat. Never leave your dog alone in a car on a warm day. If you see a dog in distress in a hot car, dial 999 in an emergency or 101. Please see here for further advice and information: http:// www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwel.../.../health/dogsinhotcars

TupsleyVoice Bishops School Golden Jubilee of Rugby This season saw The Bishop’s School celebrate fifty years since rugby started at the school. To celebrate the occasion, John Escott, who introduced the game to the school, has written a book outlining the history of the game at the school during that period. The book also incorporates the book John wrote to celebrate 25 years called “25 Years of Win and Spin” which is now out of print. The new book “Fifty Years in Maroon and Gold” which contains no fewer than 60 photographs is available from John at johnescott@talktalk.net

Bishops Science Club News Science Club has just heard that they have been awarded a grant of over £500 to run a project on Programmable Robotics from the Institute of Physics! Science club wrote their own bid and made the application for this grant so they are very excited to hear they have been given the funding! Another exciting term in Science club. With the help of ex-student Hugo Jobst and a great team of Year 10 experts we have been looking at crystals; the club has been growing the biggest Copper Sulfate crystals they can and using pipe cleaners to grow crystals in unusual shapes with Mr Parry. We have also moved on to some physics investigations this term. We used the power of static electricity to alter the path of water and to move drinks cans. The full power of static electricity was definitely felt when Mr Dingsdale demonstrated the Van de Graaf generator. That generated a lot of interest, shockingly! In preparation for Easter we have been eggs-perimenting with eggs. How much stronger is an egg on its end rather than on its side? How can you tell the difference between a fresh and a hard boiled egg, without breaking it? Can you transport an egg safely from the table to the floor without touching it? For the answer to all these questions and many more, come to Science club!

A Winter’s Tale at St Paul’s Primary - L – R : Shappi Khorsandi, Jonathan Godfrey (Principal), Peter Cooper (Deputy Principal), Eddie Playfair (Chair of the Sixth Form Colleges Association) at the Awards Ceremony.

Winner - Hereford College is 6th Form College of the year Hereford Sixth Form College has won the Sixth Form College of the Year award at the Times Educational Supplement (TES) Further Education Awards. Its victory was witnessed by over 600 people gathered to celebrate the sector’s achievements at a prestigious awards ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, on Friday 22 April, hosted by comedian Shappi Khorsandi. Stephen Exley, Assistant Editor of the TES said, “Hereford Sixth Form College was chosen as the inaugural winner of this new award, in recognition of its innovative provision and impressive student outcomes.” “The College’s Alps score (a national value added measure) puts it in the top five per cent of all schools and colleges in the system. The proportion of A*-B grades per A-level entry is 60 per cent – the best for non-selective sixth form colleges nationally. Taken together with the College’s focus on supporting and stretching all students, the judges agreed that this made Hereford an all-round outstanding place to study.” The judges said Hereford was “a worthy winner in what was a very strong field”, highlighting the College’s diverse enrichment programme and wide range of innovative teaching strategies. In his submission, Principal Dr Jonathan Godfrey said: “I am incredibly proud of the commitment shown by staff and students and it was for them I applied for the award.” Now in their fifth year, the TES Further Education (FE) Awards recognise and reward the achievements of the wide range of colleges working in learning and skills. Hundreds of FE providers submitted entries for the 14 categories, which recognise achievement in employer engagement, innovation in teaching, leadership and entrepreneurship.

At St Paul’s Primary School we have a new addition to the team. Winter is a spaniel puppy who has begun her training as an attending school dog. We are working with an amazing charity called Dogs Helping Kids, based in north Devon (dogshelpingkids.co.uk). ‘Dogs Helping Kids is the UK’s unique charity dedicated to using highly trained dogs to help teach children non-violence, empathy, respect, kindness, love, responsibility, friendship and trust. ‘ The first stage of Winter’s training is to become relaxed and comfortable within the busy primary school environment. Since December she has been attending our school regularly and spends time around school in assembly, in classrooms and especially the school library. We hope that eventually, Winter will become a listening dog and will help children learn to read. The purpose of reading dogs is to lessen stress in the classroom and increase children’s ability to learn key skills. The premise is simple: as well as reading aloud to a teacher or classmates, a child reads to a dog. Though the children believe they are teaching dogs to read, in fact, with the dog as a comfortable, attentive audience (and an occasional gentle assist from the dog’s adult volunteer partner), they are actually teaching themselves. As far as the child is concerned, however, reading is about the dog, not about the child. As a result they do not feel pressured or embarrassed. Winter has been enjoying positive training sessions locally with Allyson Giel from Old Orchard dog training and we have also been working directly with Tracey Berridge at the DHK headquarters near Barnstaple. At St Paul’s, Winter is working with a brilliant team of children in school who are helping with the training and who also benefitting from the experience themselves too. We have already seen so many positive effects when children work with Winter. Confidence, self esteem and motivation to succeed are very quickly enhanced. Winter is also helping children with a fear of dogs to overcome their anxieties and build a positive relationship with their own school puppy. There is already a long queue to become one of Winter’s helpers. The next phase of the training will be later this term when Winter has to pass her first assessment. Fingers and paws crossed for that! Andrew Teale, Headteacher St Paul’s CE Primary School TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2016 | 11
