Bilbao Night Marathon

Los días 22 y 23 de septiembre, tenéis la oportunidad de conocer los edificios más representativos de Bilbao, y este año también de Barakaldo.

Es el mayor festival de puertas abiertas de la ciudad con la opción de descubrir sesenta edificios tanto públicos como privados.

El sábado 20 de octubre miles de personas correrán el único maratón del país con horario nocturno. La salida será en el Estadio de San Mamés a las 19 horas y con llegada en el Museo Guggenheim Bilbao atravesando lugares muy conocidos y emblemáticos de Bilbao.

On 22 and 23 September, you’ll have the chance to explore Bilbao's -and this year, Barakaldo's- most representative buildings. It is the city's biggest open doors festival with the chance to discover sixty public and private buildings.

On Saturday 20 October thousands of people will run the country's only night-time marathon.

The start will be at the San Mamés Stadium at 19:00 and it will end at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, passing by well-known and emblematic locations in Bilbao.

Alberto Giacometti. Retrospectiva / A Retrospective Del 19 de octubre hasta el 24 de febrero de 2019 / From 19 October to 24 February 2019 Retrospectiva dedicada a uno de los escultores-pintores más influyentes del siglo XX, Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), que iniciaba su itinerancia en mayo de 2017 en la Tate Modern de Londres. La muestra, compuesta por esculturas, pinturas y dibujos, es una de las más completas dedicadas a la innovadora obra de este artista.

A retrospective devoted to one of the most influential sculptors and painters of the 20th century, Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), which started its journey in 2017 at the Tate Modern in London.

The exhibition, comprised by sculptures, paintings and drawings, is one of the most complete to be dedicated to the innovative work of this artist.

El Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao alberga hasta mediados de septiembre la más que interesante exposición 110 Años 110 Obras, que ofrece pinturas, esculturas y una video-creación.

On occasion of its 110th anniversary, this exhibition displays 110 of the most outstanding pieces in the museum, aiming to showcase its extensive collection and to present an overview of the art gallery from its origins to the present day. Until September the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum will house the highly interesting 110 Years 110 Works exhibition, which offers paintings, sculptures and a video-creation.

De la “A” a la “Z”, cada sala se corresponderá con una palabra en diferentes idiomas de nuestro entorno: euskera, español, francés e inglés. Contará con la colaboración del escritor Kirmen Uribe.

The usual setup according to chronology and schools will be replaced in this exhibition by alphabetical order. Specifically, each one of the thirty rooms in the building will contain works evoked by a word. From “A” to “Z”, each room will correspond to a word in different languages that surround us: Basque, Spanish, French and English. With the collaboration of writer Kirmen Uribe.

El Museo Vasco de Bilbao está situado en pleno Casco Viejo de la ciudad, ocupando el edificio del siglo XVII del que fuera Iglesia y Colegio San Andrés de la Compañía de Jesús. En su planta baja se encuentra uno de los atractivos principales del Museo para sus visitantes, el claustro, con su nueva cubierta de vidrio cuyo objetivo es el de mejorar la conservación de las piezas que se encuentran en el patio y el de lograr una ampliación del espacio del centro para la realización de actividades culturales. Es un espacio único que expone sarcófagos, escudos de armas y el famoso ídolo del Mikeldi.

Este se encontró junto a la desaparecida ermita de Mikeldi en Iurreta (Bizkaia). Está realizado en un único bloque de arenisca procedente de los alre12

dedores de Durango y representa de forma esquemática a un animal, un verraco, entre cuyas patas y bajo el vientre aprisiona un disco. Es una escultura de carácter mágico-religioso. También hay aquí una reproducción del Crucero de Kurutziaga, cuyo original está en Durango (Bizkaia).

La primera planta del Museo Vasco está dedicada a la etnografía. Versa sobre la cultura pastoril, El Mar de los Vascos y las Artesanías Textiles (lino y lana).

La segunda planta se centra en la cerámica y ferrerías, con piezas de la cerámica popular vasca, lozas y porcelanas. Y su tercera planta está concentrada en la Historia, con una maqueta de Bizkaia en tres dimensiones.

The Basque Museum in Bilbao is located in the heart of the Old Quarter, occupying the 17th-century building that used to be the Church and School of San Andrés de la Compañía de Jesús. The ground floor houses one of the Museum's main attractions, the cloisters, a unique space that exhibits sarcophagi, coats of arms and the famous Mikeldi idol. The latter was found beside the now disappeared chapel of Mikeldi in Iurreta (Biscay). It is made with a single block of sand-stone from near Durango and it represents the rough outline of an animal, a boar, with a disc between its legs and

under its abdomen. It is a magical-religious sculpture. There is also a reproduction of the Transept of Kurutziaga, the original of which is in Durango.

The first floor of the Basque Museum is dedicated to ethnography. It deals with shepherding culture, the Basques and the Sea and Textile Craftsmanship (linen and wool). The second floor focuses on ceramics and ironworks, with Basque ceramics, pottery and porcelain items.

And its third floor focuses on History, with a scale model of Biscay in three dimensions.

Bilbao cumple su novena edición con un extenso programa de actividades en torno al humor. Es un evento cultural que subraya la importancia del humor en las artes en general y, especialmente, en la literatura. Los diálogos y mesas redondas sobre los temas más variados, las entrevistas a los/as autores/as más interesantes y destacados del momento se combinan con las actuaciones, los concursos y las exposiciones. En esta ocasión, el Festival premiará al cineasta y guionista bilbaíno Álex de la Iglesia, vinculado desde hace 30 años al humor negro, cáustico y salvaje. BILBAO PARA PEQUES / BILBAO FOR CHILDREN AVES DE BILBAO “¿Qué hacemos esta tarde? ¿Vemos la tele o jugamos con los videojuegos?”, preguntó Diego a Miren. Ella entrecerró los ojos y respondió con otra pregunta “¿Y si vivimos un documental sobre aves?”.

Diego empezó a saltar: “¡Moola!”.

Bilbao se articula en torno a una ría y sus afluentes. La ciudad dispone de amplios parques.

Estas condiciones facilitan que muchas especies de aves compartan el Botxo, como se conoce cariñosamente a Bilbao. “Vamos a dar un paseo desde Urazurrutia hasta Olabeaga, pasando por el Parque de Doña Casilda, y seguro que tendremos suerte”, dice Miren. “¡Vamos!”, dice Diego atándose las zapatillas.

Desde las calles de Bilbao, se pueden observar en torno a 200 especies de aves. En los viejos embarcaderos de Urazurrutia abundan las gaviotas reidoras. “Eso son patos. Y los hay de varias especies”, señala Diego desde la barandilla.

Aguas arriba, a pocos metros, fijándose bien y en función de la época del año, se encuentran la garza real, la garceta común, la polla de agua, el azulón y hasta el tímido martín pescador.

Desde El Arenal a los Jardines de Albia el espectáculo resulta ruidoso. A las inevitables palomas suman su vuelo pinzones, mirlos, lúganos, jilgueros, lavanderas, petirrojos…”Hay algunos lugares donde incluso se pueden detectar rapaces que se alimentan de pequeños pájaros y roedores, Una vez vi un cernícalo cazando en un jardín. Y la sombra de un halcón”, cuenta Miren.

Sin embargo, el verdadero show lo ofrece el Parque de Doña Casilda. Junto a su estanque pasean o nadan cisnes cantores, patos mandarines, joyuyos, ánsares careto, barnaclas cariblancas, el ánade azulón y el rabudo, el silbón europeo o la cuchara común. “¡Alucinante!”, exclama Diego. “Date prisa, si llegamos a Olabeaga con marea baja pillaremos cormoranes secando sus plumas al sol. Y a los correlimos y otras aves rastreando la orilla”, sugiere Miren.

She half-closed her eyes and replied with another question “And what if we pretend we’re in a bird documentary?”. Diego started jumping: “Coool!”.

Bilbao is arranged around a river and its tributaries. The city has large parks. These conditions mean that many bird species share the Botxo, as Bilbao is referred to affectionately. “Let's walk from Urazurrutia to Olabeaga, passing through Doña Casilda Park, and we’re sure to have luck”, said Miren.

“Let’s go!”, said Diego while he tied his shoelaces.

From Bilbao’s streets you can see around 200 species of birds. At the old piers in Urazurrutia there are many black-headed gulls. “Those are ducks. And there are several species”, Diego pointed out from the railing.

Upstream, a few metres away, looking carefully and depending on the time of the year, you can see grey herons, little egrets, common moorhens, mallards and even shy kingfishers.

From El Arenal to Jardines de Albia the spectacle is noisy. Joining the inevitable pigeons are finches, common blackbirds, Eurasian siskins, goldfinches, wagtails, robins… “In some places you can even see birds of prey that feed on small birds and rodents. I once saw a kestrel hunting in a garden. And a falcon's shadow”, Miren told him.

However, the real spectacle is in Doña Casilda Park. Walking beside the pond or swimming there are whooper swans, mandarin ducks, wood ducks, white-fronted geese, barnacle geese, mallards and pintails, widgeons or shovelers.

“Amazing!” exclaimed Diego. “Hurry up, if we make it to Olabeaga with the low tide we can see the cormorants drying their feathers in the sun.

And the dunlins and other birds searching the shore”, suggested Miren.

Actualmente, y tras ser dotado de los últimos adelantos técnicos, realiza un recorrido de 770 metros desde Bilbao al monte Artxanda. Horario de verano: lunes a jueves de 7:15 a 22:00 h, viernes, sábados y vísperas de fiesta de 7:15 a 23:00 h, y domingos y festivos de 8:15 a 22:00h.

• BIZKAIA BRIDGE: The transporter bridge that links Las Arenas (Getxo) with Portugalete and which has been declared a World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, is 125 years old. Designed by architect Alberto Palacio, it was opened in 1893, and since then 650 million people have used it. The gondola service is in operation 24 hours a day, costing €0.40 per journey. The walkway is open from 10:00 a.m. until sunset.
