URKIOLA
A quintessentially Basque landscape: craggy, green and rocky, with the silhouette of Mount Anboto presiding over the scene from 1,330 m. Its caves hide legends that have become myths, notably Mari, the queen of all spirits, who lives inside the vertical wall of the mountain. The park is a series of rocky crags, valleys and cliffs, frequently visited by mountaineering and trekking aficionados.
This is where the Urkiola Sanctuary is located, a place of pilgrimage for those urgently seeking a partner. All you have to do is walk around the stone three times. www.urkiola.net
ARMAÑÓN
This mountain range is the border with Cantabria and it belongs to the Enkarterri region, notably including the Armañón summit at 854 m. It includes hillocks and peaks with a rural essence. The area has more than 200 caves and chasms, notably including the Pozalagua Cave (chosen as “Best Spot in Spain 2013” by the Repsol Guide), with the largest concentration of peculiar stalactites in the world.

GORBEIA
Another great destination in the Basque Country is Gorbeia, where Bizkaia shares territory with the ArabaÁlava province. The summit at 1,482 m is the highest in the region. The landscape is a combination of gentle pastures and beech and oak forests with steep rocks and numerous hollows. The more than 12 km Mairulegorreta Cave and the Itzina karst, included in the Protected Itzina Biotope, are notable features.

ll you have to do is follow the who’s who of global mountaineering to know than many are Basque, and it’s understandable why. The sheer number of natural paradises in the shape of mountains around the map will draw you in. Some of these mountains also have cultural significance in the Basque Country.
You’ll also be able to do a wide variety of activities related to mountaineering: rockclimbing, trekking, canyoning, mountain biking, hiking, orienteering, adventure sports and more. Any natural space in Bizkaia is fantastic for these invigorating activities.
Besaide is a truly special enclave with a combination of aspects making it an emblematic mountain: the three territories making up the Basque Autonomous Region meet on its summit. The monument to the lost mountaineer is also there and, just below the summit, you’ll find another memorial called the “Fountain of Life.” The views from this strategic peak are extraordinary. Naturally, it’s a must see for anyone who loves mountains.

Where ANIMALS OF ALL SORTS live
Pumas, racoons, ferrets, turtles, monkeys... There are so many animals here as a result of illegal hunting or animal trafficking, from the closure of animal farms or birth in captivity... They now inhabit BBK Karpin Fauna, in the Karrantza Valley, a specialised refuge for animals who cannot live in their own habitat.
Their stories are usually quite sad. Here the goal is to raise awareness on the responsibility involved in purchasing animals, on the fact that exotic animals purchased to be pets contribute to illegal smuggling, that hunters should respect protected species, and generally that these animals are living creatures and not commodities or entertainment.

Ecotourism active nature
Bizkaia has a significant number of natural resources where you can enjoy the landscape and a wide variety of experiences.
We’ve got routes to learn about the natural environment and the life forms inhabiting it, including enchanted forests, some with art like the Oma Forest and others full of mythical and legendary figures.
In Urdaibai you’ll find Basondo, a 60,000 m2 refuge for endangered wildlife: wild boars, foxes, roe deer, genets, wild cats, otters, reptiles, birds of prey, migratory birds, and other species that can be found nowhere else including the lynx, the European bison and the wolf. Don’t forget Urdaibai Bird Centre, a bird observatory in the biosphere reserve. Birdwatching excursions in the Salvada-Gorobel mountains depart from Orduña
www.basondo.com www.birdcenter.org
You’ll be able to see indigenous flora and fauna, watch birds fly overhead in addition to scheduled activities and walking tours and outdoor sports.
All this and more that you’re sure to discover on your trip make Bizkaia a unique destination for travelling off the beaten path and making nature a travel partner.
CATHEDRALS
Work in a nearby quarry led to the discovery of the treasure of Pozalagua, a 125 m cavity with the largest concentration of peculiar stalactites in the world. One of nature's spectacular creations to be seen in the Karrantza Valley
Another notable cave is Santimamiñe, in Kortezubi, with cave paintings of a variety of animals (brown bears, bison, deer, etc.) and great geological wealth in the form of beautiful columns made from the fusion of stalactites and stalagmites.
The Balzola cave, for its part, offers a stage full of natural force and mythological content in the Arratia Valley. Here, between the rocks and an environment showcasing all shades of green, a number of easily traversable underground passages have been created, making it one of the most interesting spots in Bizkaia.
The Pozalagua Cave was named Best Spot in 2013 by the Repsol Guide. Don't miss it! www.cuevadepozalagua.eus
VIEWPOINTS with a bird's eye view
One of the most breathtaking places is the balcony overlooking the Delika Canyon, a few metres from the Salto del Nervión Waterfall
Another viewpoint can be found next to the Urkiola Sanctuary; there a stations of the cross marks the path to the Three Crosses viewpoint with a unique panoramic view of the Atxarte river gorge and Durangaldea. Perfect for a bird’s eye view of the Karrantza Valley, it's the viewpoint where you’ll find the monument to Our Lady of the Good Event, the patron saint and protector of the area. Setting the boundary of Bilbao and offering a beautiful panoramic view of the city is Artxanda. Overlooking both sides of the Nervión River is Serantes, a defensively strategic location in the mining area close to Gallarta, where you’ll be able to gaze upon the lunar landscape of the Bodovalle mine which ceased operations in 1993. In Pozalagua, don’t miss the viewpoint in Armañón Natural Park. In Zalla the Ilso viewpoint awaits with a spectacular sunset.
Coexisting with the environment
You can't say you’ve been to Bizkaia without mingling with the country people who live in caserío farmhouses or seeing their surroundings, which are nearly always idyllic. Making the ancestral home of the Basque people your homebase is a great option, even more so now that there are a wide variety of cozy rural tourism options and a plethora of experiences to ensure you have an authentic stay.
Shepherd for a day
There is no better way to discover a territory than enjoying the shared experience of making something the region is known for.
We recommend the “shepherd for a day” idea to everyone, but especially families.
First hand
They recommend diving in and giving it your all. If you decide to make cheese, the experience will be genuine. In an amazing setting, Urkiola Natural Park, you’ll share in the dairy shepherd’s daily tasks: milking sheep, shearing them if it's the right season, making fresh cheese or curd... and you can do the same in Gorbeia Natural Park.
If you’re into working with your hands, you can also learn to make talos (corn flatbreads).

VISIT Nature Nature
URDAIBAI
If you’d like to say that you’ve gotten to the heart and soul of the locals, you’ll have to visit the Gernika Assembly House, a highly significant monumental ensemble comprised of the Santa María la Antigua building, with a variety of halls and the famous tree in the courtyard.
Heritage, traditions and Medieval towns SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GREEN
If you prefer culture, the inland region of Bizkaia is full of history and traditions, an interesting area where you will find numerous spots well worth a visit. The beauty of the setting comes in addition to its monumental wealth: a landscape where nature is displayed in all its majesty. You’ll see.
The Neoclassical building currently fulfils the function of church and parliament. On your tour, you’ll notice that the antechamber to the Assembly Hall opens onto the stained glass hall, with an allegory of Bizkaia showing the tree and the Fueros charters, Lege zaharra (old law). The various territories making up Bizkaia appear via their most emblematic buildings as do the sources of the territory’s wealth: mining, industry, fishing, agriculture and more.
The small town of Gernika-Lumo has other points of interest including the Peace Museum or the Basque People Museum, Saint Mary’s church and the People of Europe Park with sculptures by Chillida and Henry Moore. Another interesting idea is visiting the Jai Alai fronton the legendary court with a front wall, back wall and floor made of stone.
You’re in the heart of the Assembly House... The oak under which the representatives met and where the Assemblies of the Lordship of Bizkaia took place. It's a symbol that has turned the oak into the tree the people are known for.
URIBE
Although this region is on the coast with towns as wellknown as Bakio, Barrika, Plentzia and Sopela, we couldn't forget its extensive, flat and gentle valleys, culminating in vertiginous cliffs.
It's a region that produces a great deal of txakoli white wine. Here you’ll be able to follow an interesting Medieval route notably including the Martiartu Tower in Erandio, Torrebillela in Mungia, Zamudiotorre in Zamudio, the old quarters of Larrabetzu and Plentzia and Butrón Castle
The Iron Belt is also interesting. It includes defensive structures built by the Provisional Government of the Basque Country in an attempt to defend Bilbao.

DURANGALDEA
Durango has a wide variety of monuments, notably including its old quarter, which still maintains its Medieval structure.
Its architectural highlights include the Gate of Saint Anne, Saint Mary’s Church in Uribarri and the Kurutziaga Cross, from the late 15th century, a magnificent specimen made of sandstone. Its size is remarkable as is its disjointed iconography, which some critics classify as Floral Gothic. It is currently on display in the nearby Veracruz Hermitage (the Kurutzesantu Museum).
The municipality is in Urkiola Natural Park an enclave in the Urkiola Sanctuary, a place of traditional pilgrimage.
Elorrio is a town with extraordinary monuments, especially palaces and emblazoned homes. Local families’ participation in trade with the New World brought wealth that was invested in a variety of stately homes and palaces distributed throughout the town.
It is also home to stelae and tombs. Their concentration gave rise to the Arguiñeta burial ground, with pieces dating to the year 893, at the dawn of Christianity in the area. Dating earlier than the sarcophagi, the stelae are Pre-Christian.
· www.turismodurango.net · www.elorrioturismo.eus
In the Arratia Valley, Orduña is the only settlement in Bizkaia with the title of city.
Classified as a Historical Monumental Ensemble, it has several cultural heritage buildings of interest including the fortified Saint Mary’s Church, the temple of the Holy Family, the old Customs Office, its covered square and the Antigua Sanctuary, a 10 minute walk away.
Gorbeia Natural Park’s ecological richness and scenic beauty is on display. You can access it from Orozko
ENKARTERRI
Enkarterri, Bizkaia’s westernmost region is known for its rural setting and heritage sites. Balmaseda the oldest settlement in the province, with its ancient (8th century) bridge which protects the waters of the Kadagua River and the old quarter with its narrow Medieval streets. La Encartada an old textile factory specialising in berets has been preserved as it was inaugurated in 1892: the buildings, machinery and workers’ quarters are now a must-see museum.
Enkarterri's heritage offers up an infinite number of surprises. In Galdames, a 14th century fort hides the Rolls Royces of Miguel de la Vía's collection, the largest in Europe. The building is the Loizaga Tower, which holds all Rolls models manufactured between 1910 and 1988, in addition to other luxury brands.
In another Medieval tower in Sopuerta, you’ll find the Abellaneda Council House, which has been converted into the Encartaciones Museum It is the custodian of our history, a space dedicated to researching and spreading the word on the region's history, heritage and ethnography.
www.visitenkarterri.com
Meatzaldea means mining area in Basque. Here, in the Triano Mountains, Bizkaia began its industrial revolution with open-pit mining. The landscape may look different, but the footprint of the past remains present in this journey into the bowels of the Earth.
In La Arboleda you’ll find one of the best conserved mining towns in Europe, with a restored former residence that has been turned into a museum. To get there, take the La Reineta funicular
To understand iron's importance in Bizkaia’s economic development, you’ll need to visit El Pobal Forge in Muskiz, which offers live demonstrations on its Saturday tours, and the Basque Country Mining Museum in Gallarta.
LEA-ARTIBAI
MARKINA-XEMEIN
Located in the Lea-Artibai region, Markina-Xemein is on the Way of St. James along the Basque Coast, explaining its Medieval outline. With a hexagonal blueprint and a surprising megalithic monument on its altar, the Saint Michael’s Hermitage of Arretxinaga is a sight to be seen.
One of the jewels of the area that was an important spot on the Way of St James during the Middle Ages and Renaissance is the Zenarruza Monastery, declared a National Monument of the Basque Country
In the nearby town of Ziortza-Bolibar, where the ancestors of the ‘Liberator’ lived, you can visit the Simón Bolívar Museum which displays aspects of this man’s life as well as life in the Middle Ages.

Iron Belt
This route follows the remains of fortifications built to defend Bilbao, the industrial area and the port from a fixed, strategically favourable location during the Spanish Civil War. The Iron Belt runs from Barrika to Galdakao and from there to Zierbena. The successful offensive that took place attacked the weakest points in the construction and had the support of the engineer who designed it, as he shared the blueprints with the Nationalist faction.
In the Munarrikolanda mountain rage, you can see remains of this impressive military work including bunkers, surveillance posts, machine gun nests and more.
Gain a more in-depth understanding at the Iron Belt Information Centre in Berango.
Ekoetxea Meatzaldea, at the heart of the mines
Ekoetxea Meatzaldea is an environmental centre at the heart of a karst mining region. Its two centres, one in Ortuella (Peñas Negras) and other in Abanto-Zierbena (Gallarta), are surrounded by contrasting scenery with artificial lakes, forests and heathlands.
Don’t miss the tasty beans in the La Arboleda area, accessed from the Larreineta funicular, which is almost a hundred years old.
You will be fascinated to WANDER
All you have to do is take the funicular and go up to Artxanda, the mountain offers the best views of “El Botxo” (the city's moniker for being located in a hole between mountains). From the lookout point, you’ll have a marvellous panoramic view of the old quarter, the elegant and innovative Ensanche and the Guggenheim Museum, among other sites.
Back in Bilbao, a great option is to stroll among the trees on the green paths of Doña Casilda Park.
A soothing activity for any good tourist.

21 parks
5 forest areas
99.3 km GR trails
In the last few years, the once grey Bilbao has changed colours. It is now a much friendlier looking and the recovery and creation of new green spaces is a key part of the city's transformation. These spaces are comprised of urban parks and forest areas. The former add up to 200 hectares in 21 parks. Forest areas make up 1,025 hectares distributed over five areas: Artxanda, Monte Avril, Arnotegi, Pagasarri and Arraiz with 21 recreational areas. These spaces have playgrounds, tables, grills, benches and informational and panoramic signage.
There is also the GR trail encircling the city centre, with 99.30 km passing through the forest preserves of the Green Way. It’s an enclosed area with paths, trails and streets well-marked with route references, places of interest and general information. There are entrances at several points of Bilbao from the 11 trails leading to the central path.
GREEN WAY BILBAO
OMA the painted forest
This is how enchanted the Oma Forest is. It’s a magical place showcasing tree trunks painted in such a way that some figures can only be seen from certain positions, as the image is formed as a combination of various trunks.
The forest, an original work by Agustín Ibarrola, had a total of 47 painted figures. With time and the natural processes of the forest, the work has needed to be relocated, recovering lost images like the Mosque of Córdoba, Homage to the Oak, Nuclear Threat and Bidimensional Diagonal.
The current 34 sets, over nearly 800 trees can be seen in Kortezubi, a small rural town in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
Its figures come to life as you wander the forest, appearing and growing thanks to the work's bidimensional and tridimensional nature.
AT FULL SPEED GREEN TRAILS
These routes come from the reconversion of train tracks in disuse. This recovery effort was a result not just of wishing to prepare trails for ecotourism, but also in the spirit of rescuing the cultural, historical and practical significance of these routes.
Bizkaia has a variety of green trails available to walkers and cyclists. The Montes de Hierro trail that connects Artzentales and Zierbena is 42.5 km long and passes through several valleys in the Enkarterri region. The Atxuri trail is 3.8 km long and connects Sondika and Mungia.
The 5 km Arrazola green trail runs along the Atxondo valley and is more suitable for walkers. The 2.2 km Itsaslur trail, between the villages of Pobeña and Kobaron (Muskiz), has maginificent coastal views.
The Kadagua trail between Balmaseda and Alonsotegi follows the old La Robla railway line for a sublime stroll along the river Kadagua (18 km). In Ortuella, a 3.7 km section of old La Orkonera mining railway has been recovered.
The Way of the Coast or Northern Way of St. James is one of the oldest pilgrimage routes, passing through the Basque coast and coexisting with the farming and urban life of the region. It comes from Gipuzkoa and enters Bizkaia through Markina-Xemein, passes throughout the inland section of the territory until Bilbao and from there goes to Enkarterri, then hits the coast in Muskiz before going on to Cantábria.
The Way of ST. JAMES
The way FORGOTTEN
This is an age-old Jacobean route from Bilbao to Villafranca del Bierzo, in León, which was recovered in 21 stages in 1993.
The route goes through Alonsotegi, Sodupe, Güenes, Zalla and Balmaseda, allowing pilgrims to gaze at the remains of Roman and Medieval roads, bridges, churches and Romanesque art with Jacobean iconography.
Those highly of interest cultural gems include: St. James's Cathedral and St James Square in Bilbao, the Devil's bridge over the Cadagua River and the Saint Martin San Martín de Iturriaga hermitage in Güeñes.
The NORTHERN WAY
It passes through towns including Markina-Xemein, Gernika-Lumo, Larrabetzu, Lezama, Zamudio, Bilbao, Sestao and Pobeña.
You’ll be moved to GO
Horseback riding
There are several equestrianism centres offering up experiences that are sure to leave a horseshoe sized imprint.
Nature as a playing field OUTDOOR SPORTS
High mountains, gentle hills and deep valleys in a truly rural setting give the inland regions of Bizkaia a nature appealing to anyone who knows how to enjoy a landscape full of contrasts where they can practice their favourite outdoor sport.
One of the most notable regions in this regard is Durangaldea, which offers places such as the Atxondo Valley and Urkiola Natural Park. The Arratia and Orduña valleys are brimming with rural charm. The latter is the only settlement in Bizkaia with the title of city.
You can also enjoy short and long routes through Uribe, Urdaibai and Lea Artibai, the regions closest to the sea, or the GR-38 trail, the wine and fish route, so named because mule drivers walked its paths taking Rioja Alavesa wine north and bringing back brined fish from the ports of Bizkaia.
The west, for its part, showcases the marks of the mining industry with mountains that have been proving the quality of their iron deposits since ancient times. The Peñas Negras Environmental Information Centre gives information about the routes available in this peculiar area. The Enkarterri also offers a variety of routes through the Ordunte mountains and Armañón Natural Park

SOUL
A landscape as spectacular as that of Bizkaia deserves to be seen from above in a balloon. The Orduña Valley is incredible. There a cirque of vertical walls at over 800 m offers unparalleled views. You can also choose Urdaibai in the winter, going from Gernika-Lumo to the river estuary on the coast. There is also Gorbeia Natural Park
You can also go paragliding over the coastal cliffs of Sopela and Getxo Inland destinations for the sport include Orduña and Arriola, Santa Marina. If you’re a beginner, there are a number of schools where you can get started in this sport.
Connection with the Earth brings our spirit into harmony with the environment, generating a sense of wellbeing and a break from our daily routines.
Interesting experiences include the forest baths offered in some regions and yoga practiced out in nature.
“HERRIZ HERRI”
town to town
The Saint Thomas Festival marks the start of the Christmas season. There, you’ll be able to find livestock exhibits and purchase traditional products: cheese, txakoli wine, honey, doughnuts, fruit, vegetables, handicrafts and more. Music is also a major part of the festival, with bertsolari poets, trikiti players and txalaparta players livening up the ambiance. Thousands of people gather at Bilbao's Arenal and Plaza Nueva square to have a bite to eat, especially talos (corn flatbreads filled with chorizo, txistorra, black pudding, etc.), and cider or txakoli.
Agricultural and livestock fairs are an event linked with the everyday lives of many Basque towns. The samples on display are the best fruits and vegetables from the garden and the most notable livestock, and the fairs are also a meeting place for industry professionals. The audience is only happy to join in, creating a festive atmosphere where tradition leaves its mark.
Fairs AGRICULTURAL and LIVESTOCK
Notably in winter, the San Blas Fair in Abadiño the Women’s Agriculture and Handicraft Fair in Amorebieta-Etxano, the Pork Butcher's Fair in Sopuerta and the Saint Thomas Festivalin Bilbao Spring opens with the Medieval Market in Balmaseda and the Saint Joseph Market in Güeñes . Summer offers Pepper Day in Gernika, which includes tastings, the fruits and vegetables fair and the sale of Basque handicrafts. In September, there’s the Muskiz Fair. The Durango Ecological Fair is a celebration around organic produce.
On the last Monday in October, the entire town of Gernika-Lumo has a festive air with the largest agricultural fair in the Basque Country. Also in Gernika-Lumo, there is a famous market every Monday and the first Monday in October is the livestock fair.
The Bargain Day in Zalla, the fair for the oldest caserío farmhouse in the region is an intriguing affair, a showcase of local artisan products. Every fall, Markina-Xemein holds the largest Agricultural and Livestock Fair in the region. And Orozko has the largest Saint Lucy Fair, where a variety of local livestock breeds compete.
Dance is a defining trait in any society, including ours. This land has a wealth of dances that are usually performed at festivals and religious ceremonies. The aurresku is one of these dances. It is an honour dance now performed at weddings and conferences. The ezpatadantza, or sword dance, is another notable one. It is danced to commemorate or pay homage. Dances that will never be left out of any worthy traditional pilgrimage include the jota and the arin-arin.
Traditions 21ST
Sound of identity
A variety of traditional instruments play a part in Basque identity. They are played at traditional pilgrimages, fairs, rural festivals and some are even part of religious music. The most popular include the txistu (a kind of recorder) with four holes, or the txirula; another wind instrument is the trikitixa (a kind of accordion), the dultzaina, the bagpipes and the alboka (made of steer horns). The txalaparta is a percussion instrument that may have originated as a means of communication or way to produce cider with the vertical movement of the makilas (mallets).
PASSION
People show love to show their enthusiasm in the towns of Bizkaia, but the way they do so in Balmaseda and Durango is particularly noteworthy.
It appears to be in the last decade of the 19th century when there was a live reenactment of the Passion of Jesus in Balmaseda, but it wasn't until 1963 when they staged the Crucifixion. In the so-called Stations of the Cross of Balmaseda more than 500 locals lead this unique celebration out of tradition, commitment and religious motivation, portraying every year the most dramatic moments of Jesus's life with great authenticity.
The Passion of Durango differs from others in that it is the only one lasting three days and takes place on a single stage. It began in the 17th century and around 150 people participate in it.

DURANGOKO AZOKA
Basque fair culture
The Durango Basque Book and Record Fair is a contest held every year in this town in Bizkaia in the first week of December, during the Spanish Constitution bank holiday. It is considered the most important showcase of Basque culture as it is the perfect place to see the works of Basque publishing houses and record labels. The competition has historically been much more than a book and record fair as it has always been a meeting point for Basque people and anyone interested in Basque culture. Over the course of the fair, thousands of people come out and enjoy a great festive atmosphere. It is surely the best way to see live performances, learn traditional dances and fill the streets of this town.
PRIDE
The of our own
Holy Week processions coexist with Bilbao’s cultural, sports and culinary life. They are held with BIlbao Basque Fest, a festival combining tradition and modernity around five pillars: culture, music, market, sport and gourmet food brought together with a “lauburu”, the most characteristic symbol of Basque culture. Art, dance and street theatre, children’s activities, handicraft fairs, concerts, Basque design shows and exhibitions of traditional sports are just some of the activities you can enjoy.
ONE THOUSAND one hundred to
This is one of the rallying cries you’ll hear at the court if you attend a handball match. This game has always gone hand in hand with betting. If you’d like to get in on the action, you should know that the bookmakers work according to the players’ class and professional opinion. Based on that, the session will start with one side or another. The odds may vary as the match goes on and the money may shift to the opposing side, so be careful!
The balls on the court are made of rubber, the material that changed the game. When the balls became ‘livelier’, they bounced better, and thus the indirect game against the wall that we see today was born. Basque pelota is a sport with its own identity that is quite different from other kinds of handball played around the world. Competitive pelota is played in three types of facilities: open court, mur a gauche and trinquet.
There are a wide variety of ways to play and each one has its own ball. These include handball, pala (racquet), jai alai, and, within this last category joko garbi and remonte... Sare and direct modalities, like paxaka, which is played on a trinquet, and laxoa and rebote, in an open court. Don’t miss an opportunity to see a match. Nearly every town has a good fronton.
The fronton in Markina-Xemein is known as Pelota University, as a number of players who learned on it became major jai alai figures, many of whom emigrated to the United States exporting the game to the Jai Alai courts built there.
The court in Gernika leads the world with two major tournaments played on it every year. These tournaments showcase the best jai alai players in the world: the Jai Alai World Tour in the summer and the Jai Alai Winter Tour in the winter.

ABERE-PROBAK: Rock dragging by animals
GIZA-PROBAK: Rock dragging by people
HARRI-SULATZAILEAK: Rock drilling
TRONTZA-JOKOA: Log sawing
HARRIJASOKETA: Rock lifting
SOKA-TIRA: Tug-of-war
TXINGA-EROATEA: Weight carrying
FARDOA-BOTATZEA: Bundle tossing
Rural sports by origin
The work done in Basque rural settings led to a variety of sports, herri kirolak. So, those adept at cutting logs became aizkolaris. Those who cut grass in meadows with scythes became segalaris. Those who moved large rocks for construction became harrijasotzaile or rock lifters. Rock dragging arose from the same job. Sokatira or tug-of-war is so widespread that it has its own federation and international competitions.
Speaking of records, the rock lifting record is held by Mieltxo Saralegi of Navarre, the only person to lift 329 kg. The previous record was held by Iñaki Perurena, with 322 kg, his record is lifting a 100 kg rock 1,000 uninterrupted times over five hours, four minutes and 46 seconds.

IDENTITY Products signifying our
You’re already becoming familiar with them. They’re products made with traditional know-how by expert artisans who know their craft perfectly. Be them food and drink or traditional utensils, they all showcase Basque identity. You’ll find them easily in speciality shops, so you can be sure to take the best memory of your trip home with you.
You can fall in love with a makila a traditionally decorated Basque walking stick, it might be a handsome kutxa, a beautifully carved wooden box, or a kaiku, a wooden bowl used to collect milk and make curd. Kaiku is also a type of Basque jacket. If you like musical instruments, you can choose the age-old alboka, or traditional txistu. There are also ceramics including mugs called katilus, pitchers and beautiful table linens embroidered with Basque designs, in addition to scarves, shoes and, of course, txapela berets
All of these things make great gifts.
It’s a great idea to visit the old La Encartada beret factory in Balmaseda.
Wandering through it will show you how berets and cloths were made.
On your way out you’ll be able to purchase authentic Basque berets, called boinas.
You will be keen to EAT
They're recipes made with the best ingredients on Earth: Beans with their trimmings, vegetable medley, vegetable stew, as well as meatbased ingredients like beef (okela), lamb, pork (txerri), farmhouse chicken... dishes enriched by masterful preparation. All you’ve got to do is try them.

WHAT YOU GROW
One of the secrets that makes worldrenowned Basque cuisine special is the way its ingredients are handled. Gardens as well as agriculture and livestock farms are small, allowing for exacting care
The proximity of the place of production to points of sale and consumption is another aspect fostering the resulting quality. Take this opportunity to select seasonal products and taste them in any of the restaurants in the area that are sure to offer stellar service.
Km
The Km 0 label identifies foods and dishes made with local ingredients that are therefore, fresher and produced by small businesses.
It is another way to maintain local culinary traditions and foster interest in nutrition.
There are a number of restaurants in Bizkaia practicing this philosophy, with their menu or a portion of it dedicated to dishes designed with local ingredients.
The Slow Food movement is in conjunction with this idea. It aims to counter all facets of fast food and meticulously monitors the quality of the ingredients used.
Home cooking
turns haute
The so-called “new cuisine” originates from traditional Basque cuisine, which has been enriched by chefs’ peculiar contributions of creativity and innovation, taking it to levels of high art. This is the case for a variety of restaurants throughout the province, many in rural areas, some recognised with Michelin stars. Their revolutionary cooking tirelessly seeks out new flavours, new ways to surprise and delight. They await.
COMPETITIONS AND TASTINGS
Whatever the season when you come to Bizkaia, you’re sure to find a culinary competition: cheese, stew, wine... These competitions simply reflect the know-how of home cooking in the region.
Here participation is what truly counts. The idea above all is to share what was made and turn the matter into a social event or tasting of the ingredients on display. Check your calendar and choose the one that best adapts to your availability.

Bilbao has a variety of Michelin star restaurants like Zortziko, Nerua, Mina, Ola, Etxanobe Atelier and Zárate Other starred restaurants can be found outside the city, in settings where nature is another ingredient to be savoured. So, in addition to the three Michelin stars of Azurmendi, where Eneko Atxa shines with his own merit at Larrabetzu, the universe of Bizkaia also has restaurants that have earned a Michelin star to recognise their efforts: they are Boroa in Amorebieta, Etxebarri by Bittor Arginzoniz in Axpe, Txispa by Tetsuro Maeda in Atxondo, Andra Mari in Galdakao, Eneko by Eneko Atxa in Larrabetzu and Garena in Dima with Julen Baz presiding over the stove.

PINTXOS
The level of sophistication that has been reached by pintxos require them to be tried with the wine that best pairs with the food. The tradition of ‘going out for pintxos (‘ir de pintxos’) can be witnessed in any town in the province, and it cultivates both cuisine and friendship.
There are pintxo routes in certain areas, each with their own style. Since you’re coming from elsewhere, you’ll love immersing yourself in the experience and tasting some of these delicious miniature delights.
Innovation in Basque cuisine has led to the appearance of the young people leading the global food scene today. In his own words, Eneko Atxa, a member of the culinary firmament elite, proposed ‘achieving enjoyment of our identity, looking to make something local into something universal’.

TOPGREEN
POZALAGUA
It was discovered on 28 December 1957 due to the work on a neighbouring mine extracting dolomite. The Karrantza City Council decided to close the quarry to safeguard this cave containing the largest concentration of peculiar stalactites in the world. It is in the extraordinary landscape of Armañón Natural Park.
GORBEIA NATURAL PARK
Crowned with a 1,482 m summit, it is also a benchmark for Basque mountaineering and the border between the provinces of Bizkaia and Araba-Álava. Its landscape is full of rocky spaces, grassy areas and beautiful oak and beechwoods, all over a set of karsts with nearly 500 catalogued cavities.
They’re called TOP because they are the best of the best, worth visiting, tasting, buying, enjoying... a handful of experiences that we have determined to be essential, because they are worth trying when you come here. Pencil them into your itinerary and tell people about them when you get home.
SALTO DEL NERVIÓN WATERFALL
Just beyond the source and in the privileged setting of the Mount Santiago Natural Monument, the Nervión River has a spectacular 270 m tall waterfall and is the largest on the Iberian Peninsula. You can watch the falls from a lookout point built nearby. We recommend going in the rainy season or during thawing.
URKIOLA NATURAL PARK
If you like craggy landscapes, this one is for you, because this natural park includes a variety of mountain ranges and limestone crags, cliffs and deep valleys, with summits that have fostered a great love of mountaineering and hiking. Anboto, the tallest peak, is highly frequented and its Mari cave is a mythological reference.
