PERSONALITY 10
If anything truly characterises Bilbao Bizkaia today, it is a culture in which identity and traditions combine with absolute modernity. In line with this, we thought it would be a good idea to prepare what we like to call the “Shopping concept”. At souvenir shops, museum shops and the shops in certain tourist offices, you will find products that represent the heart and soul of the Basque Country, ranging from traditional costumes and handicrafts to creations produced by contemporary designers.
I
t may seem obvious that buying mementos from souvenir shops is a most traditional shopping experience while travelling. But when you visit any of these types of shops, you will see that here we want to make sure that what we offer is representative of our identity and has a very personal essence.
For example, in these shops you’ll find txikito glasses (used to “txikitear” or drink small glasses of young wines at any bar) and miniature reproductions of the equipment used in Basque sports, such as harrijasotzailes, aizkolaris and Basque pelota.
Rice cake The seafaring essence of our region is evident in the “arrantzale” clothing, or the meticulous reproductions of the fishing boats you can see along the Basque coast. For lovers of the contemporary, a good idea is to bring home a book about architecture or reproductions of works of art you may find, as well as any of the other incredibly original items you’ll found in museum shops. In some tourist offices you can purchase traditional items from this region such as folk pottery or reproductions of the Bilbao pavement tile in any form: from chocolates to silk scarves.
11
A GOOD IDEA
! In red and white
Walking though the Athletic Club of Bilbao museum or its official stores is an extremely exciting experience. Take home a memento of this emblematic club, founded in the 19th century, such as a piece of pitch or a model of San Mamés, a football, a stuffed lion...

If you are still on the coast, pay a visit to Bermeo, home to a leading fish canning industry with products such as bonito tuna and anchovies. The fodder from the inland mountains, the staple diet of the latxas sheep, is partly responsible for the excellent quality of Idiazabal and Carranzana cheese. Idiazabal Cheese Anchovies

FLAVOURS in their place of origin There is no better way to discover the essence of a country or region than by taking a look at its markets, its most characteristic products and the way in which they are prepared. That is why you should not miss a visit to the agricultural and livestock fairs or the local markets, some of which have been in existence for over 100 years. You can see locals’ enthusiasm for always offering the best to those who know how to choose. Would you like to see how all these delicacies get from the farms of Biscay and the Cantabrian Sea to the shop or the market and how they are prepared? Do you want to know what you absolutely must try? Carry on reading….

n recognition of those who strive to create new trends and define the identity of the region where they live, we would like to highlight some of the stores and shopping centres at the forefront in Bilbao Bizkaia. Just stroll around Bilbao through Abando, Indautxu, Gran Vía and the Old Quarter or through some of the villages of Biscay to see authentic design in fabrics, clothing and accessories.
Matía Jeweller's
You can find jewellers that utilize Basque symbols and images such as Eguzkilores (sunflowers) and lauburus (Basque crosses), as well as jewellers who design exclusive pieces.
14
15
In an ever-elegant city like Bilbao you can find fashion designers that are a symbol of creativity and who, in many cases, manage their own brands.
Lauburu Zergatik
When you stroll around Bilbao, you will see that it is a city open to the world where new trends in architecture and design reflect contemporary inclinations. And all this leads to a very trendy lifestyle seen at festivals, in music and a way of life that is reflected in the creation of fashion, accessories and art. But it goes even further. The restoration experienced by the city and the province since the opening of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is reflected in the shops with avant-garde architecture and décor, which are worthy of a visit and, of course, a purchase.
ART DISTRICT
A GOOD IDEA
!
A district that is home to some of the most important art galleries in the world: the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, Itsasmuseum Bilbao, Azkuna Zentroa, the Contemporary Photography Centre, the Sala Rekalde, Bilbao Arte, Athletic Club Museum, etc. Avant-garde art and culture is expressed in and around the Art District. SHOPS THAT HAVE BEEN HERE FOREVER
In Bilbao, if it's cuisine you're looking for, try López Oleaga or La Casa del Bacalao. Not to mention patisseries (pastelerías) such as Zuricalday, New York or Nevada. For chemists, in Bilbao visit Cebreiro, also known as the Little Pharmacy Museum.
Nevada Patisserie
Travelling around the city and the province, you can discover other authentic shops where you can buy truly Basque products such as those available at Hadalondi, the espadrilles and sandals at Bizkarguenaga and the umbrellas at Leoz.
16
When you enter one of these shops, you will inevitably be surrounded by smells, colours and memories from the past, now present, causing you to feel the true essence of this place.
Also typical from here are the 'equipment' for fronton games such as balls or baskets as well as musical instruments such as the dulzaina, alboka and txistu.
Shelves filled with canned goods, cold meats hanging down, loose pulses or salted cod, chemists with their ceramic containers, hat and espadrille shops... images that are the setting for the people who kindly welcome you and who, in many cases, bear the tradition of the business in their surnames.

Bookshops that have been around forever are a treasure to be enjoyed year-round. However, there are also many book fairs throughout Biscay: Mungia and Bermeo in March, in Barakaldo in April and in Santurtzi, Ermua and Bilbao in May. If you have a sweet tooth or think pastries make the perfect souvenir, you are in luck. Bilbao Bizkaia in general offer a splendid selection. Different and special desserts and sweets that are traditional in many cases and exceptional in the majority. What's more, many of them come with delightful stories making them even more mysterious and appetising. For example, did you know that the famous Rice Cake is called a rice cake because the recipe that came with the Basque sailors called for rice flour? Today, Bizkarra pastry-makers have recovered the original recipe and are once again making them with rice flour.

A reinvented building, formerly a wine warehouse that has been declared a place of cultural interest. The old façade hides an avant-garde structure fit for endless possibilities, from sports to cultural and culinary events. The project was developed with the renovation of the Alhóndiga de Bilbao. It involved a daring remodel, combining contemporary styles with the existing classical elements. The 43 columns designed by Philippe Starck with motifs symbolising the “infinity of cultures, architectures, wars and religions through which man has passed throughout history”, are quite a sight to be seen.

The old stadium was erected in 1913 in the very same spot, and 100 years later a new stadium was born. The sports facility has influenced this entire part of the city; the shops, bars, restaurants, etc. all have an air of San Mamés.
San Mamés
Few teams in the world are so identifiable with their home town as Athletic. The team’s extensive list of triumphs and always competing at the highest level with only Basque players makes the atmosphere at San Mamés very special, an experience that you cannot miss even if you do not consider yourself a football fan. The museum, club shop and culinary services at the stadium are all certainly intensely related to football and Athletic, but they also connote identity and the pride of the people

An iron structure, reminiscent of the Eiffel tower, is the point of connection between Portugalete and Las Arenas at the mouth of the estuary. On one side of the estuary is the area of Biscay with heavy industry: towns such as Sestao and Barakaldo, as well as areas for commercial expansion home to superstores. On the right bank is the more bourgeois area; Las Arenas, Neguri and Algorta are examples of this with their magnificent buildings, shops and promenades to match the setting. Santurtzi

To get to the hermitage, you’ll have to walk across a narrow bridge and up 241 steps. Once you get there, do not forget to make a wish and ring the bell three times to make it come true and drive away evil spirits.

Gernika Council House
If any town is symbolic of Biscay and all things Basque, it has to be Gernika-Lumo. Its history, tragically marred by the bombing in April 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, is the platform on which this strong town has been revived with its own identity as a symbol of Peace and freedom. The Council House, where the Biscay Council Meetings are held, its Peace Foundation Museum and the Basque People Museum, the Church of Santa María and the Parque de los Pueblos de Europa (People of Europe Park), with sculptures by Chillida and Henry Moore, form part of a historic and artistic heritage that is hard to skip.

On CAVES and BERETS Its stalactites are truly a sight to be seen and no other cave on the planet is home to so many. This is why it was designated Best Corner of Spain in 2013. Pozalagua cave, in Karrantza, Enkarterri, has the good fortune of boasting an exclusive phenomenon: eccentric stalactites of whimsical shapes that, unlike conventional stalactites, which go from the top down according to the law of gravity, crystallise in any direction, intertwined as if they were roots or coral. Nearby is the La Encartada factory 46 museum, which was declared a Monumental Ensemble after a period of inactivity. Today it is the Boinas La Encartada Museum, a significant tourist attraction that takes you back to the time of the Industrial Revolution.

When the tide goes out, the beauty of these beaches is revealed. A curious phenomenon demonstrating the environmental diversity of the region is hidden beneath the cloak of water. The rocks along the Barrika coastline stick out like sharp blades. This natural spectacle is called flysch, the result of water and sand erosion on the rock. Steps away lie Plentzia, Gorliz and Sopelana, known for being beautiful coastal villages that are excellent for surfing. If you’re after more than sport, the cuisine of the area will surely make you fall in love with this area.

The mountainous nature of the inland regions of Biscay is a draw for anyone who knows how to enjoy a landscape full of contrasts: high mountains, gentle hills and deep valleys in a truly rural setting. Traditional spaces full of charm include the valleys of Arratia and Orduña. Another great destination in the Basque Country is Gorbeia, where Biscay shares a natural park with the Araba-Álava region. The landscape is a combination of gentle pastures and beech and oak forests with steep rocks and numerous hollows. An enjoyable outing is to the Salto del Nervión Waterfall on the border with Araba-Álava and the province of Burgos.
If you prefer culture, the inland region of Biscay is full of history, an interesting area where you will find numerous spots well worth a visit. The beauty of the environment comes in addition to its monumental wealth: a landscape where nature is displayed in all its majesty. A quintessentially Basque landscape: craggy, green and rocky, with the silhouette of Mount Amboto presiding over the scene. Urkiola Natural Park is a series of rocky crags, valleys and ravines, frequently visited by lovers of mountaineering and trekking. The Urkiola Sanctuary is also found here. Legend has it that the sanctuary is a place of pilgrimage for those urgently seeking a partner.
