TURNER INDUSTRIES

Through the Years 1960s

1970s

A young engineer named Bert Turner buys Nichols Construction Company out of bankruptcy. The company specializes in industrial construction, heavy equipment, hauling, rigging and equipment rental. It doesn’t take Turner long to realize that the industrial construction industry is a series of peaks and valleys. So, he begins to take steps to ensure a steady stream of revenue, embarking on industrial contract maintenance and other services which fulfill the needs of his clients. In 1968, he hires Roland Toups who currently serves as Executive Chairman.

2010 - Present

Mr. Turner begins to acquire companies, add additional services like scaffolding, expand the equipment fleet, and buy bigger cranes. These moves provide the company with opportunities to manage and control most of the elements that make up construction, maintenance and turnaround work.

SAFETY

2019 was a year “of change for me. Though I have been with Turner Industries for over 25 years, this was the year I transitioned into my current role as Chief Operating Officer. One constant during this time was our company’s safety performance. Our welloiled “green machine” continued to deliver first-class services safely to our clients thanks to the hard work

David J. Franks

and dedication of our skilled employees. We closed out the decade with one of our best safety performances in the history of the company, but this is no accident—pun intended. Our stellar safety record is the result of a set of core values and beliefs we hold at Turner Industries. These values and beliefs shape all our actions, which in turn are influenced by attitude. An individual’s attitude is based on the culture, bringing us full circle right back to values and beliefs. At Turner Industries, our culture values our clients, employees and their families, and we believe that a workplace with zero incidents is achievable. David J. Franks Chief Operating Officer

At Turner Industries we believe that volunteering is an important aspect of being a Turner employee. TEAM Turner™ is our company-supported, employee-directed volunteer program promoting community involvement, teamwork and camaraderie. It allows employees to identify charitable causes they wish to support and provides a structured framework through which volunteerism and resources are directed. In 2019, TEAM Turner members across the country participated in hundreds of events. Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital As a long-time supporter of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Turner Industries had the opportunity to extend this support by assisting in the installation of Our Lady of the Lake’s new Children’s Hospital’s entranceway sculpture and sound artwork “Harmonic Grove.” The artwork, made by renowned artist Christopher Jenney, is an interactive light and sound canopy. This grand entrance to the hospital will include music, lights and sound effects inviting children and adults to “play” with the artwork. After the opening, members of the Team TurnerTM board were invited to visit the newly constructed campus. Turner employees were taken on a tour of its new facilities, learning the importance and amenities of the hospital. Each floor is themed to a specific Louisiana region, with unique color schemes and artwork designed with children and families in mind. The hospital will also feature an in-house St. Jude satellite campus and an outdoor healing garden area which will contain several playhouses and a wall with windows from the original Our Lady of the Lake campus. TEAM Turner plans to continue to support hospital efforts and is currently raising money to donate and assemble care packages for patients.

TEAM Turner Board Member and West Baton Rouge Parish School Board Member Teri Bergeron spoke about the importance of these types of projects. “When children are excited about coming to school, they are more likely to succeed. When they are prepared and have the necessary tools like new school supplies, book sacks and uniforms it lifts a huge burden off struggling parents. It's our mission to see that every child succeeds and provide the tools for doing so!” TEAM Turner members at the OLIN site in Freeport, Texas held a successful school supply drive, raising an impressive $4,751.92. But they didn't stop there. To maximize the amount of school supplies they could purchase, 20 employees went shopping for the best deals, taking advantage of coupons and sales. Their hard work and shopping skills paid off, because with the $4,751.92 raised, they were able to donate school supplies worth $14,936.74 to the Brazosport Independent School District. Supplies were given to not only students, but also teachers and faculty. In Corpus Christi, Texas, employees raised enough money to allow Turner Industries to provide backpacks containing all required school supplies for children currently at The Ark, an assessment center and 24-hour emergency shelter for youth ages 1 - 17.

Hahnville Equipment Facility Turner Industries opened a new 7,875-square-foot equipment facility in the fall of 2019. The facility sits on seven acres and houses a 5,000-square-foot shop space and 2,875-square-foot office. The Hahnville, Louisiana location was selected based on its proximity to the majority of our clients in the New Orleans region. The additional acreage surrounding the facility will increase our capacity to stage equipment, allowing Turner’s crane and rigging group to respond to client requests more quickly and more efficiently.

We are excited that the Turner family is continuing to invest in the company and have given us the opportunity to construct this new facility. This location will make it more efficient for us to service our clients in the region and allow our employees the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art facility.

Pasadena

Personnel Facility The slab has been poured for a new personnel facility at our office complex in Pasadena, Texas. This will be Turner’s third one-stop-shop hiring facility designed to make the hiring process as easy as possible for our new employees, while at the same time getting them to the job sites quicker. The facility is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2020. The new building is the brick-and-mortar counterpart to our proprietary state-of-the-art labor and requisitioning software, CraftTrax®, which is already utilized by all our personnel offices across the country.

We are excited to begin construction on our new personnel office in Pasadena. The one-stopshop model has proven to be very successful and having this facility in Pasadena will be a great benefit to our employees and clients in this area.

Aligning Education & Employer Needs Turner Industries has, by necessity, always been on the leading edge of workforce development. President Stephen Toups has been a noteworthy supporter and a leader in making the Louisiana Community and Technical Colleges System’s (LCTCS) commitment of building the workforce of tomorrow a reality since he joined the Board of Supervisors in 2008. As part of the LCTCS Board’s strategic planning session in November, Toups, who is the current LCTCS board chairman, invited the board members and other educational leaders to tour the Turner Industries pipe fabrication facility in Port Allen, Louisiana. Collaborating with local business to create relevant, timely progress that addresses the needs of Louisiana employers is the means by which LCTCS gets the workforce of tomorrow trained. By businesses communicating their workforce needs to the LCTCS, together they can build customized training programs that result in employees to fill existing jobs. Increasing the skilled craft workforce has always been a goal of Turner Industries. Toups has worked tirelessly for years to align LCTCS with the needs of employers.

Supporting Initiatives Nationwide As a company, Turner Industries supports over 75 workforce development initiatives nationwide. For over a decade, Turner Industries has been an integral part of Build Your Future (BYF), an initiative driven by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER)—of which Turner President Stephen Toups is a current member of the board of trustees and incoming chair-elect. BYF aims to be the catalyst for recruiting the next generation of craft professionals. They provide a collaborative grassroots approach to construction workforce forecasting and development that includes recruitment, training, placement, retention and image-enhancement strategies. In 2019 Turner Industries participated in multiple BYF events sponsored by Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) across the Gulf South. In recent years, some of these events have embraced a new concept—similar to trade shows—where students visit with various contractors and learn more about our industry in an engaging environment. Contractors showed off their latest technology investments such as drones, robotics and remote-control equipment. Collectively, the events were attended by nearly 5,000 high school and college students across the Louisiana and Texas regions.

The event, organized by Texas Gulf Coast Community Colleges’ Community College Petrochemical Initiative, aims to educate women about our industry and the career opportunities available. The one-day event is filled with motivation, success stories, career strategies and networking. Women got to listen to others speak about specific careers and what it takes to obtain a position in that field, hear from a panel of HR representatives about how to get hired, as well as receive college information regarding classes, financial aid, degrees and certifications. In addition to having an information booth, representatives from Turner organized a mock-interview

Paving the Way for

Successful Careers Turner Industries opens its doors to high schools, vocational schools and universities on a regular basis, allowing students to experience our industry in real life—an important part of their education—but our workforce development efforts don’t stop there. We invest heavily in upskill programs and career advancement opportunities. Through grants and in-house initiatives, we continuously offer opportunities for our employees to grow. A flagship effort is our Voice of Leadership class held at multiple locations every year. This eleven-week training program, developed in house, allows employees to improve their leadership capabilities as well as enhance communication and problem-solving skills. Participating in the classes are high-potential employees representing all divisions: maintenance and turnarounds, construction, pipe and modular fabrication, and equipment and specialty services. We pride ourselves on the fact that the majority of our operational leadership is “homegrown.”

At Turner Industries we don’t offer jobs— we offer careers.
