Renovates Park in El Paso, Texas

Turner Industries recently completed a successful park renovation project at Marina Rios Park in El Paso, Texas, which was funded by Marathon Petroleum. The project began with obtaining city permits, followed by earthwork and then concrete work to improve park accessibility.

A new irrigation system was installed to support lush landscaping, including trees, shrubs, and sod. The project took 2.5 months to complete, with zero injuries and 2,000 work hours. Decorative rocks and boulders were added for aesthetic enhancement.

“Marathon is proud to have funded this project, and we appreciate Turner Industries for revitalizing the Marina Rios Park. Turner executed the park renovation perfectly, and this project will benefit the community for years to come. ” - Joe Sanchez, Project Construction Coordinator III, Marathon Petroleum

Signs of Success: How Sign Language Strengthens Turner’s Olin Freeport Team

Turner Industries’ maintenance team at Olin Freeport’s Plant B has a unique strength — communication that goes beyond spoken words. Pipefitters Jeff Erdelt and Robb Dodge, both deaf, bring a wealth of experience and a collaborative spirit to the crew. They perform multicraft work and tackle various tasks, from blinding out systems to replacing pipe spools and safety valves.

Erdelt communicates primarily through sign language and written notes, but his skill set includes lipreading. He also utilizes a smartphone app to convert speech to text in meetings, ensuring he’s never out of the loop.

Dodge utilizes hearing aids to some degree, but relies mainly on sign language and written notes for communication. To create an inclusive environment, Plant B displays hand signal charts in break rooms and around the shop, where colleagues are able to learn and improve communication.

Erdelt and Dodge’s success at the Olin Freeport site exemplifies the strength of Turner’s teamwork. Turner Industries is committed to cultivating a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and can contribute their unique talents.

SIPA Group Assists Enterprise Mont Belvieu with IBDH Turnaround

Turner Industries’ SIPA (scaffolding, insulation, painting, and abatement) group provided critical turnaround support for Enterprise Mont Belvieu’s recent isobutane dehydrogenation (IBDH) turnaround. The SIPA team rapidly deployed an additional 60 workers over three critical days, ensuring the successful and safe completion of complex heater scaffold builds alongside the existing 78 SIPA employees on site.

In total, the SIPA team built 240 scaffolds, erected over 2,000 feet of hard barricade, and provided forklift assistance, expediting fueling, and housekeeping services throughout the 121 days of work. Despite harsh weather conditions in January and February 2024, SIPA crews completed all work on schedule and with an exemplary safety record of zero workrelated injuries and zero near misses. The project’s success hinged on teamwork as SIPA groups from surrounding job sites collaborated to meet Enterprise’s expectations.

“This strong relationship, built over several years through non-routine and emergency work, ensured Enterprise’s trust in us,” said Turner Industries SIPA Regional Manager Alfredo Anguiano. “Ultimately, all turnaround goals were met. By working together and adapting when necessary, our SIPA team was able to deliver exceptional results for Enterprise.”

40 -Year Anniversary: Turner Industries Lifts Off With Space Shuttle Enterprise

This year marks the 40th anniversary of a truly monumental achievement for Turner Industries. In 1984, NASA entrusted our crane and rigging group with the mission of transporting the iconic Space Shuttle Enterprise from Mobile, Alabama, to the Louisiana World’s Fair in New Orleans.

The Enterprise was a symbol of American ingenuity and the dawning age of space exploration. Perched atop a modified Boeing 747 at a Mobile airbase, the 175-ton behemoth presented a unique challenge. Recognizing our expertise, NASA called upon Turner Industries, confident that we possessed the only crane capable of handling such a delicate and critical operation.

The momentous day arrived, witnessed by a captivated audience that included Mobile residents, NASA astronauts, scientists, and engineers. Our crane team meticulously lifted the Enterprise, separating it from its Boeing 747 carrier. The shuttle then embarked on the next leg of its journey, carefully placed on a specialized trailer and transported down the Mississippi River by barge to its final destination — the World’s Fair in New Orleans.

This historic project not only solidified Turner Industries’ reputation as a leader in the crane and rigging industry but also garnered national recognition for the company. The 40th anniversary of this event serves as a reminder of

Dan Davis

Current Title: Construction Manager — Beaumont, Texas

Dan Davis has just about done it all throughout his career with Turner Industries, which spans nearly five decades. His career path exemplifies dedication and growth, taking him from ironworker to a construction manager overseeing complex projects.

A Quick Q & A with Dan

What led to your position?

What makes Turner such a special place for you?

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Looking back, what stands out as a favorite moment with Turner?

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

What ’s the most valuable piece of advice you’ve received?

Any words of wisdom for those just starting their careers at Turner?

I started in 1977 when Turner Industries was operating as Nichols Construction. As an ironworker with Local 623, I honed my skills in various divisions before transitioning to Harmony in 1979. In 1980, I was promoted to general foreman. From there, I worked my way up to becoming a supervisor, superintendent, site manager and construction manager, turnaround manager, and project manager.

Turner Industries has always treated me like family, and the company has consistently supported me throughout my career.

I thrive on challenges and adapting to new situations. Plus, working with fantastic people makes it even more rewarding.

It ’s hard to pick just one! I’ve truly enjoyed working on large-scale, intricate projects. But equally valuable are the lasting friendships I’ve built with colleagues across the country.

Hitting the open road on my Harley Davidson is a great way to clear my head. Fishing and spending quality time with family are also at the top of my list.

It ’s a combination of things: work hard and get noticed, treat others with respect, prioritize family, and remember that perception matters. Also, “Lead, follow, or get out of the way” resonates strongly with me.

Dedication and hard work are key. Remember, success is a team effort. Be open to learning from those around you, and share your own knowledge freely. Change is inevitable, so embrace it! Finally, never forget the power of teamwork no one succeeds entirely alone.
