WELCOME TO

PETER'S YARD After many requests we are now stocking Peter's Yard Swedish crispbreads as part of our range of savoury biscuits. Whether you consider it a crispbread or a baked cracker, we don't think there are many better vessels for a piece of cheese. Their all-natural ingredients of naturally fermenting sourdough, fresh milk, Shipton Mill flour, salt and honey, result in a wonderfully crisp, light-textured cracker that compliments rather than dominates its topping. Equally suited to carrying canapés as well as cheese, and with a shelf-life of 9 months from baking, they are a versatile and worthy addition to any kitchen pantry.

One of the most loved but definitely the most unpredictable products from our fresh produce list, fresh mushrooms are prized for their savoury umami flavour and meaty texture. Hugely effected by weather conditions and air & ground temperature, availability can sometimes vary (especially with wild varieties) but generally due to our good supply connections we can get most varieties, wild or cultivated, all-year-round.

WITH THE FIRST SIGNS...

that Spring may be in the air, Turners has become a hive of activity over the last few weeks, as thoughts turn towards Mother's Day, and the Easter Bank holiday which follows not too far behind. We have been seeing some interesting new products presenting themselves and we are happy to be able to finally offer our customers the popular Peter's Yard range of Swedish Crispbreads. We have had a lot of demand for these and can see them being a brilliant addition to our savoury biscuit range. Following on from our launch of Karma Cola last month, we keep the ethical beverage theme alive by revisiting our good friends at Belu Water. Not a new product, we have in fact enjoyed a good working relationship with them for a number of years, but since we last spoke about them they have made significant improvements to the way they manufacture their glass and plastic bottles which only strengthen their green credentials and are definitely worth a mention. Springtime also sees the return of perhaps the most prized of all the mushrooms - the Morel. So in anticipation for that day we look at those and the other fresh mushrooms which are available from our fresh produce department. Add to all this a reduced price on some of our favourite cheeses from the Quickes dairy in Devon, and we reckon March is looking pretty good. We hope you do too.

One exception to this rule is the mighty Morel, which is very much a seasonal springtime product, and with a warmer than usual winter this year, we should start to see these little gems appearing very soon. Below is a guide to some of the most popular types which pass through our warehouse, but do note that there are no prices listed, as these can fluctuate day by day. If you would like to know prices, or know as soon as Morels are available, give Cam or Howie a call on 01580 213357 or sign up to our weekly Fresh Produce list using the QR code at the bottom of the page.

MORELS Highly prized and distinctive, with a pitted honeycomb-like body. Especially good with chicken or in a risotto but can also be the star of any dish as it is considered one of the best. Type: wild Availability: Spring

CHANTERELLE

Bright yellow/orange in colour, they are a fragrant wild mushroom with a firm texture and fruity flavour. Great sautéed with butter & garlic. Always use fresh as they do not dry particularly well. Type: wild Availability: Year-round

BLACK GARLIC

A true gourmet product, high quality white garlic is gently aged over time, until the cloves become sweet, dark and take on a soft, almost jelly-like texture. No additives are added at any point. When tasted there are hints of balsamic, liquorice and regular garlic, and as an added bonus it does not leave any bad smell or bad breath. The depth of flavour it adds is fantastic and being more mellow than white garlic it is actually more versatile.

AVAILABLE At a time when traceability and accountability amongst food and beverage producers is often expected, the bottled water sector is regularly where we see a high concentration of companies not only making sure that the way they operate is as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible, but who actively play a role in trying to address the planet's water crisis. BELU is definitely one such company.

It is not lightly that they claim to be "the most ethical bottled mineral water available". Belu's whole ethos is geared around providing consumers with a 100% ethical product and they certainly have 'green' credentials to be proud of. Year-on-year they are reducing their carbon footprint, achieving the highest standard of carbon neutral claims possible (PAS2060), and when it comes to their bottles, there are not many who can Glass Bottled compete in terms of keeping waste to a minimum. They have Sparkling Water developed the lightest clear glass bottle on the market, that 12x750ml is 18% lighter than before and also made of 30% recycled £9.75 +VAT content. YOGHURT CULTURE

But perhaps Belu's most note-worthy contribution is their pledge to donate all of the company's profits to the Water Aid charity, something they have been doing since 2011. At the time they had pledged to reach a donation mark of £1million by 2020 but with growing sales and donations through fundraising, they look set to announce that they will be reaching this target at the end of March 2015. Now one of the most popular dairy products available, with seven out of ten people in the UK eating it regularly, yoghurt is a versatile product, which has a place at breakfast, lunch and dinner and which is used by a myriad of different types of cuisine from European, to Middle-eastern and Asian. His main job role is to make sure the stock system between our branches runs smoothly, which involves managing his staff to ensure that stock is available to customers. Ben loves the challenges his role presents him with on a daily basis and relishes the opportunity to iron-out any little problems that might occur. A doting father, Ben enjoys splitting his free time between spending time with his daughter and playing football or keeping fit generally in the gym. Not shy of a bit of sun-seeking, he has family in Cyprus that he tries to visit as much as possible and also likes the odd trip to the white isle of Ibiza, although he does admit that it may soon be time to hang up his clubbing shoes and look to get on the property ladder... well that is what his girlfriend says. Ben has got his eyes on a brand new Mercedes Benz first!

Perfect Meal? “A starter of olives with chilli, vegetable Moussaka for the main course and profiteroles for dessert.”
