A very warm welcome to our Jul/Aug 2010 issue of TV4Life he whole country was shocked by the recent shootings in West Cumbria and for some of us it was closer to home than others. You see, I am originally from that area and some of my family still live there. I am counting my blessings that none of them were among Derrick Bird's victims; especially my father who actually saw two of the bodies. We should pray for all concerned. Sometimes it is easy to take life for granted and maybe it is time to realize how blessed we are (Ephesians 1:3 and Psalm 103) and that we should do our best to be a blessing to others (Genesis 12:2). We have been blessed by your response to TV4Life’s appeal which has reached its target to build a well in Kenya (p28). Praise the Lord! Several of the articles in this issue mention blessings, including those by Dr Jerome Anekwe (p20), Victoria Osteen and our reader’s testimony (p62). I was given the opportunity to interview the founder of the Gospel Channel, Erik Erikson (p14). He has a passion to reach the world, as do Morris Cerullo (p29) and Pastor Ezekiel Velho (p43) who both had visions of people falling into ﬂames. Maybe the Lord is trying to warn us that He is coming back soon (p8 & p42) and we should do our best to be prepared (p32).

Tracing Books I was wondering whether you could help me concerning the book written by Ali Hull and Pablo Martinez entitled, "Tracing The Rainbow". The details of the book were brieﬂy described in your May/June issue of TV4Life. I am currently reading a book entitled, "Unexplained Healing", by Jennifer Rees Larcombe. In it she describes how hard it was to manage with her six children when her husband Tony went through a period of illness. So I was surprised to read in Ali Hull's article about "Tracing The Rainbow" that Jennifer and her husband are divorced. I can understand how divorce can be classed as a form of bereavement. Can you give me details about where I can purchase "Tracing The Rainbow" and Pablo Martinez's other book entitled, "Prayer Life". A TV4Life subscriber.

hese are wild, fast and confusing times especially for women. The church and society continue to debate the proper role of women. Negative mindsets and misunderstandings about some of Apostle Paul’s writings about women have inhibited them from joining the men in taking the Lord’s commission forward. All these compel women to focus more on their frailty as women or to the other extreme, rebel and go into women’s liberation.

As women, we are tossed between work, family and our ministry or Godgiven assignments towards others. It will deﬁnitely take a "Total Woman," a woman tapping into her God-given wisdom and ability to successfully balance all these roles.

Our watchword at Total Woman Ministries can be found in Joel 2:28 “These are the last days and God is pouring out His spirit even upon the women and we would be raising women that would be prophesying, declaring the counsel and the mind of God” and Isaiah 60:1 - “Arise shine, for your light has come and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you”. We aim to create Total women, for total wholeness, making total impact and reaping a total harvest.

A lot of women are spiritually sound but are failures physically, as wives or mothers. Some are very good wives, parents and businesswomen; they are prosperous physically but are feeble spiritually. Equally, we can have women who are sound spiritually and are also good wives and mothers, with successful careers. In these end times, God is using women more than ever, though we are supposed to be the “weaker vessels”. God is determined to use the weak things of the world to confound the strong. It is His desire to build up women of spiritual fervency, women of substance, sound mind and physical wholeness despite the devil's attacks. God needs women that have a positive inﬂuence on everyone they come across and are a blessing to

The Life Changing Gospel Iceland has been hitting the headlines after volcanic ash delayed ﬂights across Europe. Just as the volcano has affected millions of lives, the founder of the Gospel Channel, Erik Erikson has a vision to reach the whole world. In an exclusive interview he told TV4Life’s Sally Anderson-Wai of his inspiring encounter with the Lord and his vision for the future.

He said: “I heard a very powerful message that Jesus was the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and I realised that the best thing for me to do would be to give myself to the Lord.” It was a year later, when Erik found himself

in a church in Reykjavik that he had a lifechanging close encounter with Jesus Christ. “Before this experience I had no vision for the future,” explained Erik, in his dulcet Scandinavian tones. “As a youngster, I had got into trouble. I drank too much. I was trying to ﬁnd out my purpose and what I was doing on this earth. I knew God existed, but He seemed

so far away. In an instant, he came so close to me. “He told me, “I want to keep you alive. I want to give you a good life. I’m going to take care of you.” “Previously, I had been doubting. I had heard people give their testimonies. I listened, but I felt unsure. I thought I needed to touch Jesus. That night, He came to me. My eyes were closed. I was so surprised. Afterwards I didn’t doubt anymore. It was the ﬁrst time I had hope for the future. It was wonderful.” Erik started studying his Bible and as his faith grew, God told him to build a Christian TV station in Iceland. Erik said: “I saw the Bible as God’s book. I realised Jesus is coming soon. I saw the Jews back in Israel and I realised we were in the last days. I knew I had to get hold of people and tell them. People were in their houses watching television and I realised television was the only way to reach them.” After securing a license to broadcast 24 hours a day, Erik started broadcasting on July 28th, 1992, reaching 10,000 to 12,000 homes. Erik, whose face is familiar to most Icelanders, said: “We were the ﬁrst Christian Channel in Iceland. We immediately got a response. We didn’t have a camera. It was a very simple station with

a 10 watt transmitter. We were the only channel broadcasting through the night. Then it started to grow. We got a more powerful 1,000 watt transmitter and within three years we could reach 60 to 70 per cent of the population of Iceland.” Every morning Erik spends one to two hours seeking the Lord, praying and reading the Bible. During one of his prayer times, God gave Erik a vision to reach the whole world. By June 1, 2002 Gospel Channel was transmitting to the whole of Scandinavia. “Iceland is a small nation of 300,000 people, so we had to do it in an economical way. By then we had faithful partners in Iceland. We are building Gospel Channel step by step,” said Erik. Now, 80 per cent of the Icelanders receive Gospel Channel through terrestrial transmitters and cable systems. Gospel Channel is on a satellite that is dedicated for Scandinavia and is also available to eight million homes in the UK and Ireland through British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) on the satellite Eurobird that also reaches a large part of Europe. Erik, who appears on the programme “Broadcast From Iceland”, said: “Broadcasting through BSkyB was a big step of faith and has turned out to be a great blessing with a wonderful response from the viewers. Everybody is watching Gospel Channel more and more. We are

constantly getting told people’s lives are being changed.” Gospel Channel now airs world known television ministries, talk shows and Gospel music programmes. The network is also a family business and involves his wife, Kristine, who is from South Korea, whom he describes as “a wonderful wife and a woman of prayer.” Their daughter, Cudny, aged 21, helps with administration and mail and their son, Daniel, 19, is involved on the technical side. “My hope for the future is to be based in England so we can improve communications with people,” Erik added. “We would like phone lines and people coming into the studio. We are hoping to build a stronger platform in England within one year. We are working with Stuart Freeman, Chairman of TMH Telemedia Services and Emma Tinsley, Managing Director of TMH. It’s a great opportunity. “Look how a small country like Iceland can affect the whole of Europe. The volcanic ash has been stopping ﬂights everywhere. Everyone knows about Iceland now and everyone wants to come to see the volcano. A lot of people are praying for Iceland. We know that God is going to answer. Here are their answers compiled by TV4Life’s Sally Anderson-Wai. Tim Hughes, one of Britain’s top worship leaders, singer and songwriter. “My advice for a new Christian musician is to aim for perfection and settle for excellence. By this I mean we need to give it our very best. Set your goals high, give everything you can to be the best musician you can be. Study the art of songwriting, work hard at writing amazing lyrics and get input from other people around you. Too often we can be lazy and settle for mundane, predictable songs. I believe God is calling musicians, artists and worshippers to give themselves to be the best that they can be, to glorify God.”

Philippa Hanna, a singer/ songwriter who has supported Graham Kendrick and Delirious? “We have all got gifts and sometimes feel doors are closing, but it’s because God is trying to lead us where He wants us.”

Noel Robinson is the singer and worship leader who leads the Kingdom Worship Movement. “Make sure you are called to this pathway, and study your craft as it suggests, Christian music first. Understand your faith foundation. Your spiritual life is key. Then your craft, your expression and musicality need to be developed. It’s important that you fill yourself with God’s Word. “The Levites were not allowed to minister until they were 35-years-old, and they needed to know the Torah from start to finish. If we are to say anything, then the subject of our conversation must be known. Our musical vocabulary is very important to us to help us express the words we say. The right music produces the right backdrop to any good song.”

Do you know how many times I’ve found myself googling my name to see how many hits I get now? How pathetic! Listen to this advice, for it is tested and true. Be content at exactly the place you are at. Serve God with all you have right where you are. Godliness coupled with contentment is great gain (1 Timothy 6:6). If God wants to take your career from the local church to the concert hall, then so be it. But if He doesn’t, then no amount of ﬁnagling yourself into a record label’s ofﬁce is going to help.”

Red Hurley, is an entertainer from Ireland whose singing career has spanned several decades. “Write and sing your music with love and sincerity. Put your heart and soul into it. Leave no stone unturned to get the best out of what you are doing. Don’t try to commercialise your music just to get to the masses because then your music is fake and does not glorify God and will be seen for what it is – That’s my advice – Try Try Try.”

Matt Redman, one of the most popular and proliﬁc praise and worship leaders, singers and songwriters. “Never try and manipulate or push yourself into a position in ministry. God will make a way if He wants to. The doors He opens no one can close, and the doors He closes no one can open.” Ken Riley, vocalist and songwriter with Yfriday, who recently split up. “Serve God with your gift. Become as good as you can be. Realise you are there to serve the church and not the other way around. Apply Yourself Gently “God blesses those who are humble [gentle] ...” Matthew 5:5

Who knew a gentle old man with a weakness for bonsai trees could be such a powerhouse? In cheesy 80’s teen-flick, “The Karate Kid” Mr. Miyagi is just that. His mild-mannered and meek disposition sets him apart from his rival karate instructor, who preaches success at all costs: no pain, no gain. Yet it’s the tender, “tread lightly” approach that wins the day in the film, proving that “gentleness” and “wimp’”are not the same thing. Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek [gentle], for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5 KJV). Notice, the gentle don’t strive, manipulate or compete like others, yet they inherit everything. When you “inherit” something you don’t have to strive for it, you receive it because you’re loved, valued, and part of the family. Gentleness is part of the love family. It doesn’t preach ”win at all costs”. It doesn’t elbow its way to the top. It doesn’t parade itself like a carnival float through town screaming, “Look at me! Look at me!” It does what it says on the tin; applies itself gently. If you look before wading in with your Doc Martens, you’re applying yourself gently. If you listen before spouting off, ”What you should do is ...”, you’re applying yourself gently. If you encourage rather than point out failure; you apply yourself gently. Apply yourself gently: in this tough old world, it’s a reminder of how God is gentle with us.

TV4Life Appeal Reaches Target For Well! Readers and fund raisers have been thanked for helping raise £2,300 for a well in a Kenyan village. The TV4Life appeal was launched in the May/June 2010 issue to help Mwikali Kavivya, 33, provide fresh water in her mother's village of Kakuli where residents have to walk a mile to the river in the rainy season and eight miles to a tap in the dry season. Mwikali, who works as a nanny in Essex, raised £850 with a sponsored run. Members of Wivenhoe Methodist Church and TV4Life staff helped raise £683 with a tabletop sale, and friends and readers have donated the remainder. World Cup Blows Whistle On Persecution The organization Open Doors, which helps persecuted Christians, has been raising awareness with parties during the World Cup. A football shirt signed by the England team was among items being sold in an auction of memorabilia in aid of persecuted Christians. While some churches have been showing the matches on big screens, some countries fans haven't been allowed to follow their teams. North Korea, Algeria and Nigeria all appear on Open Doors' list of 50 countries where persecution is hardest. Believers were being invited to pray while teams played. A sports knowledge quiz and meal was organized at West Bromich Albion and a six-a-side soccer tournament was being held at Kingham Hill School in Chipping Norton. Operation Mobilisation is also hoping to win souls for Christ with "The Ultimate Goal Campaign" by encouraging Christians to share their faith.

Call To Pray Christians are being called to pray for God's blessing on the new Government. The news comes after 66,245 people signed Westminister 2010 Declaration of Christian Conscience which asked all parliamentary candidates to support believers' views. The election has resulted in a coalition "Lib-Con" government but also a parliament that is better balanced on Christian conscience issues. Overall 63 MPs with poor voting records lost their seats but only 10 MPs with good voting records failed to be re-elected. Now that the election is over, a spokesman for Westminister 2010 said: "We continue to call upon all those in UK positions of leadership, responsibility and inﬂuence to pledge "to respect, uphold and protect the right of Christians to hold and express the beliefs outlined in the decalaration and to act according to Christian conscience"." Meanwhile, Christians were called to intercede for the Government during the Week of Prayer for Parliament and Government in June. Called To The Nations by Morris Cerullo

orris Cerullo is one of the foremost international evangelists in all of church history. For 64 years, he has uniquely demonstrated the compassion of Christ, accompanied by the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit, to meet human need on an unparalleled level. This man, who many look upon as an apostle and prophet to the nations, was raised up by God from a humble beginning. Morris lost both his parents at the age of two (one died, and the other left him) and he was placed in a series of foster homes and orphanages. Challenged by the religious orphanage authorities to give up his faith in Jesus Christ, this teenage boy walked out of the orphanage into the cold New Jersey weather, all alone to fend for himself. Shortly afterwards, young Morris Cerullo was called by God to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Morris received an incredible, supernatural vision from God which forever changed his life. In the heavenly vision where he was brought into the glorious Presence of God, Morris saw two footprints. As he peered into them, Morris saw multitudes in torment, engulfed in flames, destined for an eternity without God. God asked Morris for his life, there in the heavens in the revealing, literal Presence of God. Morris said “Yes, Lord” and gave God his life. ver the years, I have been asked so many questions from people, who wonder how my ministry is enjoying express growth, and an abundance in mindblowing testimonies. I have had others criticize my ministry because they do not understand how it is possible in this day and age to experience signs and wonders on such a big scale. Well, all I can say is it is Jesus at work. And wherever Jesus was, signs and wonders followed him. And this is what I seek to do, to reproduce the ministry of Jesus as he came to deliver the oppressed and heavy laiden. And this is the key, "He came to deliver", and I seek to highlight the importance of this, and the power of deliverance. Deliverance is release from satanic bondage and oppression into a place of total freedom and abundance. Many today

would seek to disregard the ministry of deliverance, but this only leads to the devil to walk all over the body of Christ, unchallenged, unrecognized and unperturbed. Jesus instructed His disciples to cast out devils and to heal the sick. I believe that deliverance is part of the armour God has for the church today.

"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds," 2 Corinthians 10:4 "For this reason was the Son of God made manifest, that He might destroy the works of the devil," 1 John 3 vs. 8. When God visited Moses and instructed him to go and deliver the children of Israel out of Egypt, He stressed that he had heard their cry and had seen their oppression. Whenever people are in bondage, they are being held up in a place that they do not want to be in by someone stronger than them. It only takes someone with more authority and power to come and bring you out of that place of bondage.

"Every knee shall bow of those in heaven, those on the earth and those underneath the earth and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of

God the Father," Philippians 2:10. In the book of Exodus, we see that deliverance can take days or months before the enemy releases you. The devil never willingly gives up his victims but with persistent prayer and fasting, he has to let the people of God go. I am strongly convinced that in order for a person to be delivered they have to make up their mind that they no longer want to stay in "Egypt". They have to walk away from all unrighteousness and daily live a life that is pleasing to God. The sick and oppressed are still being healed today just as they were when Jesus walked on the earth. He is still healing and delivering people today. Deliverance is real and restores the fullness of the kingdom of God, which includes righteousness, peace and joy. We shall now share a few testimonies of miracles that are happening in our ministry at VPA to humiliate the enemy.

We put this into practice and because of this we experience incredible testimonies in our ministry. For instance in 2009, a man was diagnosed with cancer and was given only three months to live by his doctors. Feeling dejected and devastated he went home to break the sad news to his wife. His wife called their aunt and she advised them to go to VPA and that God

Of Deliverance would surely meet them. The man was put on a course of deliverance and kept coming to the church until eventually one day I was led by the Lord to tell him that he was healed and that he should go back to his doctors for a check up. He was also told that the doctors would be amazed.

He went to see his doctors and when his results for the check up came back, the doctors were looking confused. He asked them what the results were and they informed him that they could not see the cancer anymore and that they would do the tests again as there deﬁnitely was a mistake. He told the doctors that it was because he had been healed and the doctors laughed at him. The tests were repeated and the result was the same. The cancer had vanished from his body. He went for a second opinion and the result was the same. The cancer had left his body and he had been healed by the delivering power of Jesus Christ. It has been over a year since he was healed and he is enjoying a normal family life. This is what deliverance can do.

A GP from Ghana was afflicted with barreness for five years into her marriage. She had been told that her tubes were blocked and it was impossible for her to have any children. As a result of this, she was always arguing with her husband. She came to VPA to see me in November 2008 and the Holy Spirit told me to tell her that if she could stop the arguments with her husband for a month, she would have a child. She stopped arguing with her husband for a month after which she took a trip to Ghana for a holiday. While she was in Ghana, she went to the hospital as she thought she had food poisoning. The hospital did some tests on her and the impossible had become possible, she was pregnant! She is now a proud mother and God has shown Himself to be strong. In fact they named her after myself "Alexia". Another woman had had seven miscarriages. She testified that every time before she had a miscarriage, she would dream of someone sleeping with her in her dreams and she would lose the pregnancy the very next day. She only had a nine-year-old daughter and

the 8th pregnancy she had, had ended up with premature stillborn baby. From the time she lost the baby she was afﬂicted with an issue of blood for four years. She came to VPA for deliverance and on the fourth day of her deliverance, her issue dried up. All the money that had been owed to her was returned, including a title deed to a property that her brother had denied her access to before. When God visited her through his delivering power, he truly delivered her out of all of her troubles. Saints, when you decree a thing in Jesus’ name, the enemy is aware that you are not suggesting or even giving him an option or advice. He understands that when you come in Jesus’ name he must cease and desist his illegal activities at once and that the captives have to be set free. Many do not want to believe in deliverance, even some mature Christians, because they do not want to believe that the enemy can afﬂict Christians. Unless the body of Christ arises and takes its rightful place, many will continue to live frustrated lives. Jesus is a deliverer and he came to set the captives free, Isaiah 61:1-7.

Who Is Your Source?

his first part of the year has been taken up with political parties debating and trying to convince the population that they are the party of the people and the party that can be trusted. In all the manifestos I have read not only in the election campaign but many in the past, I have never been convinced that the main parties have all the answers. They have indeed many plans and policies that Christ would applaud, but they also have plans and policies that Christ would abhor. Jesus said: “We are in this world, but we are not of this world” meaning that we belong to Him and His Kingdom and that means His ways, His plans and his policies should be our ﬁrst priority. We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience and therefore our thinking and focus should be on “The Kingdom of God” and how it operates. Every time Jesus said in his parables “The Kingdom of God is like...”, He was saying this is God’s method of operation; this is the way God wants you to live your life not according to the world’s standards and thinking. That’s why the Apostle Paul appealing to the Romans said: “Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). No government or employer is your source only God and Him alone, so shake off the propaganda of the world and its ways and:

like to work and am a focused person. But I didn’t always use wisdom in the way that I handled work.

I used to live with this cycle: I’d get burned-out, then rest, then work really hard and get worn-out again, then ﬁnally rest, then work myself to the point of exhaustion, then take a little time off… You get the picture. Weariness was a routine part of my life! Weary is deﬁned as “exhausted in strength, endurance, vigor, or freshness; having one’s patience, tolerance, or pleasure exhausted.” Some symptoms of being weary are losing control of your thoughts and emotions, saying things you regret, an inability to make good decisions, giving up on things, overeating or overspending, being grouchy, feeling sorry for yourself, giving in to temptation, and not enjoying life. We all get weary sometimes, and we tend to think that life is what makes us weary. But it’s not life that makes us weary – it’s our approach to life or our attitudes and the way we handle things. I remember praying so hard for people and circumstances in my life to change. And God told me, “You need to change your approach.” While I couldn’t change my circumstances, I could change my attitude. The truth is, nobody can make you have a bad attitude if you decide not to have one – you have full authority over your attitude.

I’ve learned to recognize the symptoms of weariness before they start, so I can do something about it before I get to the point that I need a truckload of Christians to help me out of my mess. The key is crying out to God right away for His help. God’s Answer for Weariness God’s answer is for us to enter His rest. It’s the most beautiful place to be! Matthew 11:28 talks about it. In this verse, Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.]” This rest is not a physical rest or a rest from work. I’m not talking about a secret place we can go to get away from everything in the world. The rest Jesus offers is something we experience in our soul while we’re in the midst of everything that’s going on in our life. It’s a rest that helps us deal with things so they can’t steal our joy, keep us upset all the time, or ruin our health. We can stay peaceful, no matter what’s going on around us. I call this a “soul vacation.” On this “vacation,” no matter what’s going on, you don’t worry about it or try to ﬁgure out why or what to do. You ask God for wisdom and wait on Him to show you what to do. Then you do what you can do and don’t strive to do what you can’t. We need to go to God in every situation

and ask Him for help. The thing that wears us out is trying to handle things on our own, thinking we don’t have time to pray. But when we spend time with the Lord, we can be reﬁlled, refueled and refreshed in His love, presence and power. God never grows weary, and one idea from Him can save us hours of wasted effort and emotional turmoil. When your soul is resting, your emotions are okay, your mind is okay, and your will is at peace with God, not resisting what He’s doing. You’re not striving to understand everything and instead simply trusting that God is in control, even though you may not know what He’s going to do or when He’s going to do it. God never promised us a trouble-free life. But He did promise we could live above it – with His help. As we approach life with trust in God, giving Him control, we’ll discover we’re stronger than the trials we go through. That’s the rest of God!

Success Breeds ChristianSuccess I

t’s important to recognize that the people closest to you need to hear your words of encouragement. Sometimes we compliment strangers or people we barely know more than we compliment our own family members. We’ll tell a co-worker what a great job she did, but when our spouse excels, we don’t say a word. Or when our children look nice, we’re so used to it that we overlook them and miss that chance to encourage, but when we see a co-worker wearing a new outfit, we’re quick to tell her how great she looks. We should compliment and encourage our family members as we do others. It’s easy to take the people closest to us for granted. “I don’t need to say anything to them,” you might say. “They know I love them. She knows I think she is beautiful. He knows I think he is great.” But a blessing is not a blessing until it is spoken. When you release those positive words of affirmation, they will have a positive effect in the lives of the people you love. Your spouse, your children, and the ones you associate with day in and day out need to hear your words of approval and affirmation more than anyone else. Don’t take the people God has given you for granted. Have you said, “I love you” to your spouse today? Have you told your children how much they mean to you? Are you looking 40 jul/aug

for opportunities to compliment and encourage those closest to you? …

the stage to bring your own goals and dreams to pass.

We need to look for opportunities to use our words to build up the people in our lives. Rather than condemning people for what they are doing wrong, let’s strive to catch people doing things right – compliment and reward them with encouraging words. Your words of affirmation can draw people close to you and add value to them. Use your words to build someone’s confidence and watch what happens!...

Anchor Thoughts . I will make a habit of giving someone the gift of encouragement every day. I recognize if I don’t use my words to compliment and encourage, I’m not taking advantage of the gift God has given me.

Another way to fill someone’s emotional bucket is by doing small acts of kindness for him or her. We all like different things, or put it another way, we don’t all like the same things. Find out what makes the people in your life feel special. It doesn’t have to be something big that takes weeks of planning and costs a lot of money – a cruise, a diamond ring, a swimming pool. That’s all great, but don’t wait for the big things to bless the people in your life. I’ve found that small acts of kindness often have just as much or even more impact…. Recognize that someone is always watching and listening to you. That’s why we must live our lives with purpose and resolve, so we can challenge those around us to rise higher. Our words are painting pictures in the hearts of those we love, and we can create masterpieces with every stroke… Strive each day to be a people builder and help make those people around you a group of winners. Success breeds success, and when you encourage others in their dreams, you are not only building great relationships, but you are setting tv4life.com

End Time Signs And Warnings From God

escuers scramble after Quake hits China”, “Eruption paralyses European Air Traffic” stated the International Herald Tribune in the aftermath of the recent Chinese earthquake and cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland. The International Herald Tribune reported that a powerful earthquake in Qinghai Province Western China killed at least 400 people caused injury to another 10,000 and left many others buried under debris the very next day reporting in its newspaper that Air Traffic was shut down across much of Northern Europe to shield planes from a high-altitude cloud of ash drifting south and east from an erupting volcano in Iceland. The BBC reported that in Turkey a strong earthquake killed at least 50 people and injured another 50. In the most devastating recent earthquake the Haiti Government said about 230,000 people died in a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. The worst earthquake in Haiti for 200 years was followed by 12 aftershocks. More than 300,000 people were injured and 1.3 million displaced as large parts of the capital, Port au Prince, were destroyed along with national landmarks including the Presidential Palace.

The question is whether the recent earthquakes in China, Turkey, Haiti and the Icelandic volcanic eruption are warnings from God and if so, of what? The Prophet Amos made this important point for us: “The Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets” Amos 3:7. Jesus’ disciples too were interested in knowing the signs or warnings concerning the Last Days and his return. On one occasion whilst they were with Jesus on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, the Disciples asked Him: “Tell us … what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Matthew 24:3. Jesus then gives the Disciples the scenario of the season that would herald his return. Jesus told his Disciples to watch out for “earthquakes in various places” Matthew 24:7 (see also Mark 13:8) this means the recent earthquakes in China and Turkey. The Amplified Bible expands on this that we need to look out for“mighty and violent earthquakes” (Luke 21:11) which the earthquake in Haiti certainly falls under. Interestingly enough, the Bible says that an earthquake was a “warning sign” from God Numbers 26:10. tv4life.com

Jesus also spoke about end time signs “from heaven” or to put it another way signs in the skies (Luke 21:11). The high altitude cloud of ash certainly got the attention of travellers and holidaymakers as airports closed across Europe leaving thousands stranded overseas. Jesus said the most significant sign of the End Times and His return would be the sign of the fig tree (Matthew 24:32) which his disciples immediately understood as the nation of Israel (see Jeremiah 25:5-7) and its blossoming i.e. its re-birth. Not only is Israel a sovereign state again in our lifetime, but just two days before the eruption of the Icelandic volcano the country was remembering the six million Jewish people who died in the crematoriums of Europe and a poignant reminder of this was the huge cloud of ash over most of Europe. Earthquakes in China, Turkey, Haiti and the volcanic ash filling our skies are fulfilling Jesus’ words in Matthew 24 and Luke 21. What A Night! When the stars descended upon Woolwich! The Chase

t was a night like no other. The place – New Wine Church, London. The event – Galaxy Award Night. The distinguished guests – All workers of New Wine Church, every single one of them a shining star, every single one of them an unforgettable servant! The atmosphere was electric at this black tie event in honour of the 600 workers across the 29 departments of New Wine Church in Woowich, London, who serve tirelessly and give relentlessly all year round. On arrival, they received a warm welcome from the pastors and ministers and their spouses. In the church, guests were given VIP treament, with chic cocktails, mouth-watering hors d’oeuvres and breath-taking ice sculptures that transformed foyers where professional photographers and TV crew greeted them. More treats awaited the guests in a luxury lined marquee, including different ﬂavoured chocolate fountains with over 30 choices of dips, and a drinks fountain dispensing crème punch into chocolate shot cups. Meanwhile, a saxophonist serenaded them with some sizzling jazz tunes. During the award ceremony, every worker received a warm handshake and a personalised award from Pastors Tayo and Joke Adeyemi, to say “thank you” for serving God and making Him famous in the community. All 600 workers felt appreciated and valued. Everyone, from the gentleman who helps in the car park, the lady who welcomes people into the sanctuary, the Sunday school, the usher, the volunteers who go into the neighbourhood spreading the gospel message, the worship leader and the prayer warrior. They had fun, felt blessed and experienced God at the Galaxy Award Night.

Canadian rapper Chris Greenwood has plenty to shout about. Known more widely as Manafest his highly anticipated fourth studio album has gained him wider recognition. Giving His Very Best “The Father Of Modern Worship Music” Graham Kendrick has been at the forefront of Christian music for more than 30 years. He has written and recorded hundreds of songs now sung by millions. “The Very Best Of Graham Kendrick” has just been released. He spoke to TV4Life’s Sally Anderson-Wai. Can you give us a brief testimony? When I was quite small, about six-yearsold, my mother was reading us a bedtime story that explained the gospel. When she ﬁnished the book, she asked us if we wanted to pray and respond. Something happened. It was as if something exploded in my chest. I knew God had heard my prayer. It was a moment I have always remembered. As I grew up, I discovered that everyone wasn’t a Christian, so that what I believed was tested many times. In my teenage years, I was surrounded by school friends who weren’t Christians and we would discuss it. As I became an adult I became stronger in my belief and through that I wanted to follow Jesus.

What does the Lord mean to you? The way to know God, the forgiveness of sins and discovering why we are on this planet and what it is all about. You can answer this question in all sorts of ways. Ever since my childhood I have set out to follow Jesus and try to discover what He wants for my life and that my life will bear fruit. How has He transformed you? Some people have dramatic testimonies of being terrible people and ﬁnding God. I have the advantage of starting young. I hope my life and attitudes have been shaped by the Word of God and the teachings of Jesus. What would I be without Him? I don’t know, but I am sure I would be completely different. How did you become a musician? When I was younger, I had piano lessons, but the teacher gave me up and that put me off formal music education. I was in a very musical atmosphere. My father, a Baptist pastor, played the piano accordion and the piano and he had a good singing voice. There was a lot of music around so I soaked it up. At 14, I started to ﬁnd my own way. That meant right from the beginning I was trying to make music. At that time there were a lot of Christian bands trying outreach. My friends, my sister and I copied that. Because we wanted some material, I started to write songs and discovered I had a talent for it. It quickly became my passion. What does worship mean to you? A life of love is a life of worship. Whatever we do singing songs, we need

to seek to live a life of love or else it is just an empty noise. What inspires you? It could be anything. I could be listening to someone preaching, reading a newspaper or looking at a psalm. That is only the beginning. Once I have a spark of inspiration. Only a small proportion of inspiration ever becomes a finished song and only a relatively small amount of songs become popular. But it’s not about popularity, it’s about declaring the truth. How do you write songs/music? For me it’s very much about trial and error. It’s 10 per cent inspiration and 90 per cent perspiration. I’ve no doubt God gives us inspiration, but He also gives us ability to craft things and we can use that ability and experience to give our best and get the best out of it. What is your aim with your songs/music? My aim is to enable people to give God the worship of their hearts. A lot of it is trying to communicate who Jesus is and what he said and did. What are the highs and lows of your career? How are you to measure the highs and lows? If you are a commercial artist or on the pop scene it would be by your biggest sales, but God doesn’t measure things the same way. One thing I enjoyed was in the 80s and 90s; the March For Jesus happened all over the world. I am very grateful that God enabled me to be part of it. Sometimes we reflect on how much we could have pleased God by being more determined and responsive and taking opportunities. So one is not totally satisfied, but is grateful.

Learning Mandela Style Leadership by Mal Fletcher

few years ago, at a rally organised by the Make Poverty History campaign, Nelson Mandela said: “Sometimes, it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation.” In using the word ‘generation’ he was not, of course, referring to a specific age demographic. He was laying down a challenge to people of all ages, from all walks of life and ethnic groups. Fifteen years later, the challenge carries even greater importance. If this generation is to achieve any kind of greatness, it will need to wrestle with enormous global challenges and make the most of unprecedented opportunities. Cultures shape choices and human choices are the stuff that makes tomorrow. This is where leadership is so important, for leaders build and reinforce positive and proactive cultures. The challenges of today and tomorrow will call for nothing less than Mandela-style leadership.

Of course, the former South African president is unique in our time. We are not all called to be global icons. Neither, thankfully, are we forced to endure the oppression and imprisonment that shaped this great man. But we can develop some of the skills Mandela used to articulate a vision for his nation and to marshal the kind of support that moved that vision forward. Here are some key principles we need to adopt to achieve that goal: Respond with more grace than you are shown. In the movie Invictus, which reveals much about the early days of Mandela’s presidency, the captain of the South African rugby team is played by Matt Damon. In one scene, his girlfriend remarks on how it is amazing that the team has achieved a place in the World Cup final, against all odds. “No,” says the captain, ”What’s amazing is that

a man can spend almost 30 years in a tiny cell and then manage to forgive those who put him there.”Even in those early days, it was Mandela’s grace that inspired the most. Mandela’s forgiveness on release from prison showed that he was much less a prisoner than most of the apartheid authorities had been. He proved on Robben Island that you can be enslaved in body while free in mind and spirit. There is something enormously attractive about a gracious spirit, but grace is not revealed in the midst of applause or adulation. Grace is like an infrared beam, which is only seen when things are at their darkest. I know from my own experience, which is nothing compared to Mandela’s, that when people you trust turn against you, the best you can do is keep your mouth closed and your head down and get on with a new challenge. In the end, your character and skills will shine through.

Live big picture, not small screen. In the earliest days of his presidency, Mandela established what would become a key tenet of his national and global leadership. Many a national president has promised to be inclusive in his or her leadership, but few have actually achieved it. Mandela saw the 43 million people under his charge as his extended family and in many ways he led them as a father might. Of course, politics being what it is, not everyone is or was delighted with his leadership decisions. Inevitably, politics demands that compromises be made between what is ideal and what is pragmatically viable. Nevertheless, over the long haul Mandela tried to govern for the big picture, rather than the small screen of sectarian interest. In any enterprise, leaders who consistently put the big picture interests of their community or customers above their own will do better than those whose interest is solely in short-term profits, share-holder applause or their own position. Leadership is about an iron will wrapped in respect. If, like me, you’ve visited the infamous Robben Island, you may well have experienced similar emotions – a mixture of revulsion for the demeaning treatment of the prisoners, with exhilaration at the eventual triumph of their cause. Of one thing I’m certain: you will have been very moved by seeing the limestone quarry where political prisoners carried out their pointless labour, chipping away at white rocks day after day. Standing in the quarry early in his imprisonment, Mandela said: “We must turn this limestone pit into our university.” Over time Mandela helped to create a culture of learning in the midst of hardship. In the end, many of the previously uneducated prisoners left the island with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Two factors were at play here. The

first was Mandela’s personal passion for learning. I have friends who’ve had the good fortune to have met and in some cases worked alongside Nelson Mandela. Invariably, they talk about his great natural charm, his ability to focus on whomever he is speaking with so that they feel dignified by having his full attention. This is no mere affectation. It springs in part from his drive to learn from others. No matter who he’s speaking with, Mandela believes he can learn something. The other factor at work is his iron will. Throughout his imprisonment – where he was as much a leader as during his presidency – Mandela maintained a stubborn belief in the rightness of his cause. This gave him the courage to stand on the inside even when he was under pressure to bow on the outside. In an age of bullying leadership, where throwing tantrums is often confused with forceful personality, we must learn this skill of quiet, yet stubborn determination. And we must learn to wrap our personal focus in a respectful and genuinely curious attitude toward others. Your impact is more important than your image. In this age of ubiquitous celebrity, much is made of people who have “star quality”and leaders who possess unusual charisma. For Mandela, any celebrity or image that was attached to his leadership served merely as a means to a much more important end. Many a leader faces the temptation to make decisions in the interests of shortterm perception rather than longer-term corporate or social benefits. For some, the highest goal is the flattering profile in a glossy business magazine, or being invited to sit at the best table in the industry conference. As the spread of social networking and other digital technologies brings a greater level of transparency to leadership, individual leaders will increasingly be judged more on performance than personality. And those who treat their leadership position as nothing more than another step on the

career ladder will be found wanting. Today, leadership in any sphere must be seen more as a vocation. This will become even more important as the millennial generation emerges into significant influence. Studies have shown that this generation is optimistic about the future and its place in it, but is somewhat suspicious of “experts”whose talk is not matched by their walk. It’s a generation that demands that expertise is demonstrated through civic-minded, not self-serving projects. Leaders whose behaviour reveals only narrow-minded self-interest will find it difficult to attract and hold the attention of this powerhouse generation. Conduct yourself with dignity and nobility whatever the circumstances. Mandela himself has written about how difficult it was to keep up a publicly positive attitude, when facing enormous turmoil within. Yet, despite the enormous pressures of loneliness, separation from family and frustration brought on by oppression, he would pull himself up by the bootstraps and quite deliberately walk erect, with head held high. To others, it looked like the prison camp, for him it was a mere inconvenience, a bump on the road to eventual success. Within his tiny cell, he kept up a rigorous daily exercise regime. This helped not only to keep his mind clear, but to prevent him from showing outwardly what many others were feeling: defeat and desperation. His physical demeanour was always one of nobility – he worked hard to keep it so. As the former president nears the end of his life, he leaves us with the bar of leadership set high. The question he asks; “will we become a great generation?” hangs in the air, demanding that we respond in our time as he has done in his.

Living A Blessed Life

This is the testimony of a TV4Life reader Arnold Maughan

want to tell everybody my testimony. How God told me to buy 300 chairs for a church we hadn’t even found. How the Lord showed me a great cross over the building we were to buy, so we bought it. How God told me He would supply the money we needed, and He did. Every time we needed a large sum we found someone back in Britain had paid the exact sum we needed into our account. God had told them to do it, we had never published our need. It was marvellous. As the son of a Primitive Methodist minister I learned right from the beginning that Jesus was - and is - my friend, my Saviour. I suffered from chronic appendicitis - undiagnosed - for 10 years from the age of three and learned the blessing of patience from a loving father and mother, and most importantly from Jesus. The Lord has blessed me all my days, but the ﬁrst high point of healing was in 1942 when I was in Seaforth Hospital, Liverpool, undergoing operation after operation as the surgeons did everything possible to clear my body of the glandular tuberculosis I had contracted whilst serving in the Fleet Air Arm in Trinidad. My mother had to give her permission for this operation, having been told I might not get through it. Mother went back to the old Cherry Orchard Road Methodist, my father’s last

appointment as pastor, to ask for prayer on the day of my operation. I can only remember coming out of the anaesthetic and feeling myself going down into the blackness and cold. Then quite suddenly I was being lifted up - or so it felt. There was a warm rosy glow above me and as I rose into it I fell asleep. It was only the next day when my mother phoned for news that it was realised that the moment the nurses had noticed the colour coming back into my face and my pulse and respiration settling down was the exact moment the prayer meeting had lifted my name to the Lord. My second miraculous healing was in Tenerife in 1985 when I was a passenger on a coach that crashed in Las Canadas, the base of the volcano, Teide. My back was broken and for two years I was in pain and greatly restricted in movement as the damaged 10th thoracic vertebra has ossiﬁed or hardened in a deformed shape and various doctors certiﬁed that nothing could be done to amend it. But God knows differently. I had been a local preacher for 30 years and my friend, Richard Smith, told me he had heard from the Lord that He was going to start a great work in the south of Tenerife and I was to have a major part to play in it. I very simply prayed “Lord, if you have a work for me to do, I could do a lot more if you healed my back”. He did! At the beautiful All Saints Anglican Church in Puerto de la Cruz,

I knelt before Bishop John Satterthwaite as he blessed me. At that moment my deformed spine was straightened and I got up nearly three inches taller than when I had knelt down. That was in February 1988. I have had no problem with my back ever since and I’m 86 now. God used me in His great work in Los Cristanos, Tenerife. About 18 months later, I was asked to take over as pastor of the little group that met on Sundays at the Princessa Dacil Hotel for worship. God called me to pastor the group and eight of us old aged pensioners established the group as the South Tenerife Christian Fellowship. He showed me where we were to set up our church and in October 1990 we held our ﬁrst meeting in our new home in the Apolo Comercial building. The Global Humanitarian Forum’s Human Impact Report estimates climate change is already causing 300,000 deaths a year. After the volcanic ash from Iceland paralysed European airports recently, the Big Issue

magazine asked, “Can natural disasters ever be attributed to God’s wrath?” Nations attending the Copenhagen climate summit agreed to set a target to limit warming to no more than 2C, but Greenpeace UK executive director John Sauven expressed disappointment. “It seems there are too few politicians in this world capable of looking beyond the horizon of their own narrow self-interest, let alone caring much for the millions of people who are facing down the threat of climate change,” he said. Dr Martyn Atkins, general secretary of the Methodist Church, said, “Together we can make a small but signiﬁcant change and express hope in God’s future.”

But the climate crisis, made even worse by the failure of world leaders to broker a legally binding deal in Copenhagen, means the need for public witness is stronger than ever. How do we do this? Certainly by keeping the issue in public view, but also by beginning to “live the future.” What does this mean? By 2050, the UK Government will be under legal obligation to cut 80 per cent of our carbon emissions based on 1990 UK levels. Churches and faith communities

can be at the forefront of a new drive to live more simply: by growing food locally, overhauling our homes, simplifying our transport options and “walking the walk.” As an inspiration, we take the story of Noah, a man of virtue held in huge esteem by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. When charged with the task of protecting God’s creation, Noah asked no questions, he simply got on with it. The Old Testament story underlines that God made his covenant, not only with humanity, but with the whole of creation. Medicine For The Soul Writers and speakers Adrian Plass and Jeff Lucas recently had an exchange of their letters published in the form of a new book. “Seriously Funny” will help rid the world of the image of boring Christians. Ali Hull caught up with the pair to get their slant on humour in the church.

aughter is good medicine, according to the Bible (Proverbs 17:22) – but does that mean, in some churches, that people are neglecting to take that which God has provided and which will do them good? Two leading exponents of using laughter are Adrian Plass and Jeff Lucas, who have been using humour in their writing and speaking for a very long time. And both have taken a lot of criticism for doing so, Jeff especially, when he has been preaching. ‘One anonymous writer left a note for me once, commenting that I had mistaken my calling and should have been a stand-up comic. He – or she – concluded by saying “We would see Jesus.” But to me, in humour, you do see Jesus.” C S Lewis might well have agreed with Jeff – certainly he said that if you want a congregation to weep at the end of your message – in other words, if you really want to get through to them – then it is best to get them to laugh at the beginning of your message. Why? Because then they will be relaxed. So why don’t we? Jeff blames it on what he calls “our Greek hangover, with its lingering stoicism – we need to get out from under it, and to laugh more.” And Adrian agrees. But neither of them are using humour as an escape from reality – more, it is an escape to

reality. The reason many of us laugh at what they say is because we recognize ourselves and our hang-ups and concerns. For their real aim is for greater honesty in the church. Adrian says, about his relationship with Jeff, ”We are not flippant at all about the things that matter. I am boringly serious about following Jesus, and tediously orthodox in my faith, but I have learned that laughter can clear away an awful lot of the rubbish that threatens to overwhelm the central truths that never die.” Adrian is also convinced of the benefits of laughing – even in unusual circumstances. As he says, “One of the most wonderfully rewarding aspects of the work I do is being allowed to see the spiritually therapeutic effect of “having a good laugh”. Over the years many people have been kind enough to approach Bridget and I following an evening performance to share their relief on finding they can still laugh after a recent bereavement. One lady in New Zealand described how her father went into hospital with terminal illness and a debilitating spiritual depression. She gave him a copy of “The Sacred Diary of Adrian Plass“ to read. When I asked a little nervously what the effect of this had been, she smiled through welling tears. Her reply was sweet and simple. “Adrian, he laughed himself to death.”

Jeff Lucas “In terms of ministry, how could I hope for anything more than that in this world? Laughter can be Jesus in the lives of those who dwell in shadows. It can be benevolently subversive in situations that need to be popped like balloons. It can reassure troubled souls that God is sane and sensible. It can combine smiles and tears, a cocktail of emotions that offers a little taste of heaven. It can be a Bank Holiday in the daily grind of grief and loss. It is such fun.”
