Christy Turlington’s sizzling return warms up the Fall/Winter 13 Calvin Klein campaign – 25 years after first modelling for them. Expect the usual muttering of ‘airbrushing’ under the breath but regardless, the 44 year-old Turlington looks as beautiful and stunning as ever. The Little Black Jacket, the collaborative oversized book by fashion heavyweights, Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld sees Chanel’s design classic reworked by Lagerfeld and modelled by a string of celebrities. This cute Coriollis Couture Mini Vintage Travel Hairdryer is the perfect travelling companion. It’s super lightweight with 2 speed settings – a perfect combination of style and power! Under the banner ‘Raise a sweat. Raise money. End cancer’ Victoria’s Secret models including Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes and Lily Aldridge got on their bikes to raise funds for Peletonia, the bike tour charity that supports cancer research in Columbus, Ohio. London born photographer Miles Aldridge is enjoying a retrospective of his work in his home city at Somerset House. Vibrant colour and women are the searing focus of his work that often boasts a twisted element. The exhibition runs until September 29th. For Chanel’s couture show in the Grand Palais Karl Lagerfeld created this incredible burn-out theatre complete with bomb-blasted ceiling and piles and piles of rubble. Isn’t it amazing what he can do with a bit of polystyrene!

long gone from the make-up trends. It’s always important to neaten up the brow area before adding on to it, just take out the strays and never hack into the actual shape! For a fast bold brow my best tip is to use coloured brow gels, kind of like a mascara but for your brows. Try the Tinted Brow Gel by Anastasia Beverly Hills.
STEP 6 FRESH EYES To keep the focus on the cheeks, lips and fresh skin simply curl your eyelashes (a must!) and apply your favourite mascara to them. For an extra flash of colour try the YSL Volume False Lash Effect mascara in Green Emerald, Deep Night or Fascinating Violet to accentuate your eye shade but super-subtlety.
STEP 7 MULTI-TASKER We all love a product that does two things at once and the Stila Lip & Cheek Stain does both exceptionally well. The colour choices are all bang on-trend for this season; love the Mango (a perfect peachy orange) and the Raspberry (bright hot pink). Use lightly across the lip or go double layer for that extra pop. Use small crisscross strokes across the apples of the cheeks and lightly up across the cheekbones and blend downwards with a sponge or your fingers.

hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? I never really had a plan as to what I wanted to do. At the age of 15 when the careers officer at school asked me what I wanted to be I said “Model”. She didn’t really have an answer for that! If I had never been a model I would never have been a make-up artist so I have my mum to thank for that. It’s strange but at the same time nice that my mother has never said, “Wow you’re gorgeous or beautiful or sexy” or anything along those lines, nor has anyone else in my family so it has never been a big deal for me and I have never gone around town thinking I’m amazing. I suppose it was my boyfriend at the time, Serge Krouglikoff, who saw that I was no longer enjoying my career as a model. Serge was an amazing fashion and beauty photographer who encouraged me to study beauty therapy at the age of 23. I also watched the incredibly talented make-up artist that were booked on his shoots. Regis Huet and Richard Sharah were Serge’s two favourite make-up artists at the time and true artists. Serge was a perfectionist in every way and would not shoot until everything was to his liking – this included the model, the clothes, hair, make-up, location, concept, lighting and atmosphere of the shot. I think Serge saw something in me that I didn’t see myself… he knew I had always been fascinated drawing faces and getting a great like-

I also started doing an evening make-up course at The London College of Fashion and let my hair down by doing some expermiental looks. I guess it was at this moment of creativity that I thought to myself, “Yes I can do this” and from that moment onwards there was no turning back. How did you manage to have such a long career as a make-up artist? You have to be artistic to be a successful make-up artist and be able to read people to understand what they want – whether they are able to tell you verbally or not. In every job you undertake there is an element of creativity although the person you’re making up may not appreciate this. What most people want is to look stunning; to be in kind and confident hands with someone who is not arrogant but professional and a pleasure to be with during your time together. It could be easy to have an ego, to think you’ve made it in the fashion industry or to get in with the wrong set of people. I have seen so so many extremely talented individuals who have blown it in one way or another and I find that so very sad. These are the important rules to success… looking nice yourself, having a good clean kit, reliability, being helpful, being happy, being creative. Every day, every job, every contact, every

McCABE make-up is important. Never apply make-up for make-up’s sake if it’s not needed. I also learnt a great deal about photography as a model. I knew how the photographic industry worked; I understood that great lighting with beautiful make-up and an encouraging entourage makes a brilliant photograph. How would you define your style? Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? I would say my style is to make people look beautiful, sexy, elegant and confident. I don’t think that there is a period that has influenced me the most, however I love the 50s Hollywood glamour and the 60s. Who or what inspires you? Everything inspires me… life in general; art, artists, photography, photographers, magazines, directors, films, just talking about the shoot will inspire me, being optimistic, loving what I do, making people feel great about themselves and being able to delve into my encyclopaedia of creative knowledge within my head that will just spill out given half the chance. Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? In the past I have done a great number of shows and I must say they are my least favourite as egos are flying and there is not enough time. However at the beginning of my career I did some amazing hair shows with full on OTT make-up and that was fun. I love the restraints of close-up beauty in the studio as everything has to be perfect and you can really show your talent.

EAMONN I like the unpredictability of location work and being able to cope with the extremes of these shoots, whether it be the long hours, the temperature, the organisation, the difficult nature of the shoot, personalities, insecurities, egos and being thrown together with people that you would never wish to socialise with at any other time than on a location shoot! Tell us an industry related moment that you have never forgotten. I had been recommended by hairdresser Michael Rassa to the amazing Vogue photographer of 40s, 50s and 60s, Sir Norman Parkinson in 1981. I was booked to make-up Queen Noor and King Hussein of Jordan. When we arrived at The Royal Palace in Jordan we all sat around the table and I was asked if I had any of my work with me. I was about to say “No” when I suddenly remembered and produced from my purse a postage stamp of HRH The Prince of Wales and his future bride, Lady Diana Spencer. They were all impressed and no one asked me if I had anything else because at the time this was probably the best calling card anyone could have. You’ve been in the industry for over 30 years, how do you feel it has changed in that time? It has not really changed a great deal apart from digital photography and photoshop now being around. Plus the internet and YouTube has opened up a whole new market. Having worked with royalty and celebrities for so long, do you still get star-struck? Strangely enough I’ve never been star-struck and I’m not sure why that is. I have met most of the monarchy in this country and they are just like everyone else apart from the fact they have a title and speak nicely. I am not in awe of any celebrity. Maybe it’s because I feel we all have a talent in something and there is no one in this world who is a genius in everything.

You’ve also worked with many high profile men such as Paul McCartney, Bowie and even Simon Cowell – what’s the secret to successful male grooming? I think the success to male grooming is to make them look like they are not wearing any make-up and this is achieved by making them look healthily tanned rather than made up. Paul McCartney once said to me, “I wish I’d taken you to New York as the make-up artist there made me look like a drag queen.” It’s not what you put on that’s important with male grooming it’s having the confidence to leave it off. Sometimes I see features and covers on high profile guys and I think to myself, “Why did the make-up artist make the make-up visible!” For people that don’t know, you are Auntie Maggie to Sam and Nicola of Pixiwoo. Do you feel that you influenced their career choice and do they ever ask you for advice? Yes, I am Sam and Nic’s auntie; their mum, Judy is my sister and we are a really close family that always help each other. We don’t go around slapping each other on the back and saying how fabulous we all are and I think that has kept us all grounded. I would say that I probably influenced their career; I would like to think I helped them along the way as I always took them as my first choice to be my assistants on jobs and second in command. I also always gave them first option of doing a job that I was not free to accept myself. I don’t believe they have asked me for advice but I have given it. We are the type of people that learn by looking and listening. Being nice, pure hard work, common sense and sometimes keeping your mouth closed are essential assets.

HAIR REMOVAL . ss13 .
IT’S HAIR TODAY GONE TOMORROW WITH OUR SKINCARE EXPERT FREYA-JA BARKER The sun is shining and you are contemplating which pretty sun dress to put on then the horror hits you, you remember that your body resembles that of a gorilla. The hair on your legs is long enough to plait and let’s not even start on your bikini line, more like full beaver winter coat! If you are not blessed with a soft angelic blonde sprinkle of silky hair that a quick glide of a razor will dispose of, if in fact you are the type of person with thick coarse black wiry hair who is more in need of a lawn mower then a razor then it’s hard to decide what is what is the best method of hair removal for you. Here are some of my top methods and products...
44
W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 11 // AU G U ST 2013
SHAVING This tends to be most people’s first method of hair removal. It’s quick and painless... unless you nick yourself! There are thousands of razors out there but my top two are Wilkinson Sword Intuition – A three in one, the block around the blade lathers as you glide it, the 4 razors shave and the block moisturises. Leaving legs soft and smooth. Alternatively for those of you wanting cheap and cheerful look no further than Bic twin lady which uses two blades to get a quick smooth finish and at the price they are they are easily used just a few times and thrown away. I’d recommend using them with a body oil in the shower to get a really close finish. HAIR REMOVAL CREAM Hair removal cream is great for those that are prone to shaving rashes and blanch at the thought of waxing. I recommend Veet hair removal cream which gives longer results than shaving as it can get closer to the skin and therefore closer to the root of the hair.. it is
also great for the more visible parts of the body such as arms in order to avoid stubble and regrowth will appear slower. It can be removed with a spatula however I would recommend using exfoliating gloves for a really close smooth finish. BLEACHING This is not hair removal as such but can soften the appearance of dark hair so it’s ideal for facial hair or even hair on arms and body plus it’s easy to use yourself at home. The old classic brand Jolen is still one if the best and they even do one containing Aloe Vera which is perfect for people with sensitive skin. Always be sure to do a patch test first but simply follow the instructions, mix up, apply, leave and rinse away. WAXING STRIP VS HOT WAX For longer results waxing is one of the best options as you are usually looking at least 4-6 weeks until full regrowth. Personally I think going to a professional for your waxing is the preferable however finding the best therapist is a bit like finding W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 11 // AU G U ST 2013

the Holy Grail. If you are lucky enough to find someone great then get their personal details in case they move from the salon they are based at. Camilla from the tanning shop off Oxford Street, London if you are reading this then please get in touch... I’ve not found any one yet that comes close to your skills! Sorry anyway where was I... If you are feeling tough and want to do your own (be wary at certain times of the month as you can be more sensitive) then home kits can be great, but there is the old debate against hot wax or strip wax preference. Personally I prefer hot wax where you apply a couple of layers of wax, allow it to set, then catch a corner and pull the actual wax against the direction of hair growth. Some prefer the traditional method of strip waxing where you apply the wax to the skin and then a strip of cotton to the wax which you use to pull away the hair. Parissa hot wax for face, brow and bikini is great for short

coarse hair. The results can last up to 8 weeks and it uses Azulene oil to soften the skin this will also help stop in-growing hairs. Nair Brazilian spa clay body wax strips are great for larger areas such as body and legs but they can also be used on the bikini line. Be sure the hair is no longer than 1 cm for a more comfortable wax. Nair uses mineral rich clay, mango butter and acai palm which are soothing and moisturising leaving skin smooth and soft. EPILATING Epilating is my preferred method of hair removal and quite frankly has changed my life! I have always been cursed with thick dark hair on my legs. Honestly they looked like a full wall of hair that would need either shaving every day or I would have to hide them away for weeks in order for them to be long enough to wax. An epilator is a small machine that has a roller and works like lots of little tweezers to pull the hair out a bit like waxing. However unlike wax it can be used on

LASER The best option for those that want a more permanent solution to unwanted hair. Using a concentrated beam of light it targets the pigment in the skin which damages the follicle that produces hair. This is mainly a treatment for those with darker hair and fairer skin tone and it’s important to keep treated areas out of the sun. Silk ‘n’ Flash and Go XL is an at-home award winning treatment that’s clinically proven, can be used on body and face and usually requires 6-8 treatments but may well need the odd top up treatment in the future. Using the gun-like machine the laser treatment will feel like an elastic band being pinged against the skin but remember as they say no pain no gain. Well there you have it. Don’t feel like you can only stick with one type, most people mix and match such as threading for face, epilating legs, shaving underarms and waxing bikini. senior artists. Many (entitled) new artists tell me that they don’t need to, “clean someone else’s brushes” or “powder noses on set” and I quickly inform them that are profoundly incorrect. While you’re cleaning brushes and powdering noses, you’ll be observing a senior artist’s work process. You’ll be able to study their time management, how they handle the talent in their chair, how they interact and work with the rest of the team/crew, how they take direction, how they present themselves on set… none of these skills can be learned from a book or by watching a video, they must be experienced in person. The value of this depth of knowledge is immeasurable.

career (print, stage, film, video). Now you need to research senior artists in your market (geographical area) whose work you admire. Contact them, provide examples of your work and offer to assist. You can use this same process to contact agencies and offer your assistance to their make-up artists. I heard a few of you grumble, “Examples of my work? Where do I get examples of my work if I’m not working?” That’s simple – testing. The tried and true way to build your first portfolio and get lots of great hands-on experience is by testing. Start researching local photographers and looking at their online portfolios. When you’ve assemble a healthy list of names and contact information, send out an email blast alerting them to your availability for test shoots. On these shoots, no one is paid, but everyone on the team (model, hair, make-up, wardrobe) is compensated with free images. There are a few important rules to testing. These portfolio pictures are the way you’re going to get your career started, so make sure the photographer understands your needs and has your best interest in mind. This means that every set-up (make-up look) will require a few well-lit close-ups of your work. Full body, hard profile or moody/shadowy shots

that don’t feature the make-up are useless in your first portfolio. People must be able to see your work if you want a chance at landing those first assisting jobs. SUPER IMPORTANT: You first portfolio must have a good selection of clean beauty shots that illustrate your technical skills – minus all the crazy colors, glitter and feathers. Keep the fantasy or concept test shoots to a minimum until you have solid beauty shots in your portfolio. It’s also important to always test up. Don’t waste time testing with a photographer whose work isn’t better than what you already have in your portfolio. As the quality of your work gets better, the quality of the people you work with should also. RECAP: We’ve now established that you must assist senior artists to gain proper work experience and that building your first portfolio is done by testing. These are very important steps for building a strong foundation for your career. In our next installment, we’re going to address the product junkie in all of us. We’ll cut through the endless sea of cosmetics and discuss what essentials are needed to create a proper, wellstocked professional make-up kit. Love and light my make-up mavens – xo

MSF for me, is one of the most amazing, important charities around and after the shoot with Freja I asked if I could interview her for the Q&A section on my blog as I wanted to find out more about her and her work with MSF. She very kindly agreed. Below is an extract from my forthcoming Q&A. Having been hugely successful as a model, you appeared recently to have taken a short sabbatical and have become involved with the charity msf, can you tell me more about it, how you first became aware of them and eventually became involved? I’ve known about MSF for a long time and made little contributions over those years as I admire the work they do and the effort of the many volunteers that carry the organization. I tried to do a few different projects for them in order to raise awareness as well as funds. It’s lovely to be able to come up with projects like this that seem worthwhile. So you offered people in the fashion industry a chance to get involved in the charity with you. how did you do that exactly and was it easy to make that happen? I suggested some fellow models as well as make-up artists and hairstylists to give away a day’s salary during the shows in Paris. It felt like a bit of a grass-root approach and an easy way of getting people involved. I don’t know

that it was the most effective way to raise funds, but it was an idea tried, and I think it’s always worth a try. You have recently returned to modelling but are choosing to work less. is this because of the charity and the new jeans line you’re working on? I have spent time on the charity and on co-designing a little capsule collection with the designers at Mother Jeans, it’s been a treat and has really hardly felt like work. I think the decision to work less came a couple years ago along with a desire to explore other things and breathe a bit after having worked and travelled pretty much non-stop for years. It’s been lovely to spend more time with my close friends and family and unwind a bit and of course to have time to do projects like this one with Mother Jeans for MSF. Freja’s full Q&A interview will be available on my blog Saturday 24th August 2013. Should you wish to donate to this fantastic charity or just find out more about MSF, go to their websites www.msf.org www.doctorswithoutborders.org The Freja/Mother Jeans collection will be available from September 2013.

anding back in London it was straight into London Men’s Fashion week – I have worked with the design team Agi & Sam for the last three seasons and it’s always a right British knees up when it comes to the look for the boys. In the past we have done handle bar moustaches, lamb chops and other great facial hair looks, and thanks to the great Charles Fox store in Covent Garden there are plenty of ’taches to choose from. As most of the models are young and fresh faced we needed to match to their hair colour so that it didn’t look comedy! Last season we went for a ‘ruddy skin’ look and so by using a burn and bruise wheel we could achieve that “Prince Harry blushing” look! This season we went very simple and back to basics with perfectly groomed skin – after we had prepped the skin with Bioderma Hydrabio Light Cream, nothing too

rich as I wanted the skin to be matt and anything more would have created too much shine. I then went back to the old school of make-up and used my trusty Dermacolour palettes of which I’m a huge advocate. From creating a base, to contouring, or covering blemishes and tattoos these palettes are a god send, and because they have been reformulated they are no longer drying as they were 20 years ago when I was first introduced to them. Once the boy’s complexions were flawless and not a blemish could be seen we set the face with Kryolan No Colour Powder which took away any shine but did not alter the colour of the skin. Brows groomed, lips salved – job done! Pam Lucas is a model in her 70’s who I got to work with for an editorial project with my good friend John Paul Pietrus. Pam’s face is exquisite, she has the most amazing bone structure with a pair of brows to give Cara Delevigne a run for her money! I used NO foundation on Pam’s skin as it’s flawless, so I just used a little tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier. I wanted to really define her eyes so using a kohl pencil I smudged it in on the upper lash line and in the waterline winging it out a little to give a feline feel to the make-up. I then used a little Max Factor Wild Mega Volume Mascara – I love it for creating volume and whilst separating the lashes at the same time… its now in my personal makeup bag too! I wanted to give her a vibrant lip and so opted for a bright matt orange which was bold and fun, red would have been too

obvious and I just love my Diego dalla Palma Orange so much that there really was no other choice! I used Anastasia Beverley Hills Brow Duo to fill in any gaps and groom her brows – we shot this story at Syon House, an amazing stately home which Pam totally owned in every shot. Clements Ribeiro, purveyors of great cashmere and beautiful wearable frocks, are a design duo that I have loved since the 1990s – so I was very happy to be asked to do their advertising campaign. As the models were young and had these amazing brows I really wanted to concentrate on bringing those out and giving them beautiful skin. Again there was no need for foundation as they were blemish free, a tiny amount of my Bobbi Brown BBU palette to conceal just under the eyes and a lick of mascara just to define the eyes a little but it was all about those brows. Using my Tom Ford brow pencils I filled in and elongated the brows so they were quite fierce and then using a brow comb softened them by brushing out the excess. On the lips – I used By Terry Rose Lip Balm and nothing else – the girls looked really beautiful and haunting. Sometimes it’s the simplest make-up that has the biggest impact. Before I go you should take a look at Lisa Butlers range for ‘& Other stories’ a new concept store by H&M – amazing brushes for a snip! Lisa is a truly inspirational artist and has really got it right with this collection. W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 11 // AU G U ST 2013

BACK TO BASICS . ss13 .
Each month our nail expert Asher coleman will bring you news, reviews and trends that you can re-create at home. But first things first, lets go back to basics… Every good make-up application requires a beautiful base and the same rule applies to nail applications. Your nail polish will look and last much better if the nails underneath are strong and healthy. It also means that you’ll be able to rock the most classic nail trend of all – no polish nails! So get your nails in tip-top condition with my easy guide and you’ll have the perfect canvases to get creative with in no time.

Regular exposure to cold weather or air conditioning Using cleaning products such as washing up liquid or bleach without gloves Frequently using a polish remover with acetone

Your nails are dehydrated, so: Wear gloves when cleaning Avoid shimmer/pearlised polishes as these contain an ingredient that is particularly drying Avoid using alcohol based soap
Always wear rubber gloves when cleaning dishes Keep your nails filed to reduce catching and splitting

Asher recommends Eucerin Intensive Repair hand cream with urea (to hydrate) and Lactic Acid (to exfoliate) will help to remove ragged cuticles without the need of nippers that can cause trauma. Moisturise clean hands before bed (wear gloves if your hands are also very dry) and lightly push back cuticles with your thumb nail in the bath/ shower the following morning.
TOP TIP: Always file nails in one direction or invest in a glass file if you find this difficult.
Asher recommends OPI’s Original Nail Envy is a calcium rich formula that will help to strengthen nails in no time at all. Now available in 6 variations for more specific nail problems. W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 11 // AU G U ST 2013

THE ART OF MAKE-UP AT OLYMPIA BEAUTY WITH A DIVERSE BACKGROUND SPANNING OVER 20 YEARS IN EDITORIAL, ADVERTISING, RUNWAY, CELEBRITY, FILM AND THEATRE, IT COMES AS NO SURPRISE THAT NICCI HAS COLLABORATED WITH SOME OF THE LEADING INDUSTRY FIGURES. FROM ALESHA DIXON, HUGH GRANT AND EMILY WATSON TO MARIE CLAIRE, COSOMOPOLITAN, GQ AND THE GUARDIAN, NOT TO MENTION LONDON FW AND SA FW, NICCI’S FOCUS, PASSION AND KNOWLEDGE ARE ABUNDANTLY EVIDENT. IN 2009, NICCI SET UP LONDON MUSE, A MAKE-UP SCHOOL RUNNING COURSES THAT OFFER EXPERT, CURRENT TECHNIQUES FOR ASPIRING MUAs. More recently, Nicci has been using her expertise to help organise the new Make-up Emporium at Olympia Beauty, London’s premier make-up and beauty event that runs from Sunday 22nd until Monday 23rd September 2013. She is also head judge in this year’s line-up for The Art Of Make-up Competition which is sponsored by Airbase and created the image for the Anglo Eccentrism competition theme. The focus for this years theme is quintessentially British inspired and will be judged by a team of pro working artists. Nicci was keen to get involved with the event when asked, in order to support the next generation of make-up artists and expose the realms of make-up artistry. What was your route into make-up? Growing up in the 80s I was heavily influenced by New Wave music along with the flamboyancy and eccentric makeup and fashions of the New Romantic Scene. This era was a post reaction to punk and as a teenager looking for an identity, I naturally gravitated towards this whole movement. There were so many inspirational, iconic make-up artists at this time, one of them being Serge Lutens, the genius image maker who created the iconic Shiseido advertising campaigns of the 80s.
Do you think you have the skills to impress Nicci and the rest of the judges at the Art of Make-up competition at Olympia Beauty this September? Then enter by following the link below for more details. Good luck!
Are you self taught or did you train somewhere? I trained in Media Make-up & Hair at Cambridge Regional College in 1994.

MALE GROOMING
MOISTURISERS Chin up, chest out, pout and strut!
. ss13 .
ry this. The next time you’re in the office or at the bar with a group of your male friends and colleagues just innocently throw in “so Dave (substitute name here), I hear you’ve been using a tinted moisturiser?” … bring on the long awkward silence. Despite claims that moisturiser is no longer “a girl thing” and that blokes everywhere are embracing the idea of a daily moisturising regime, it seems they are still a little reluctant to talk about it! But that’s why we’re here to help. This is our selection of some of the best moisturising products out there right now. Your man’s ideal product will be easy to apply, non-greasy and promote hydration, skin cell regeneration and healing. UVA protection is a bonus and maybe even try a tint of colour for extra glow. Still can’t find a product that suits? Just get him to ask his mates what they use!

An extraordinary display of beauty and grace. One of the most incredible things about this beautiful performance is that the dancers are all deaf. They are members of the China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe. None of them can actually hear the music making the choreography and production a truly amazing achievement.
