Shiver me timbers! January seemed to go on forever this year but Valentine’s Day has warmed us up, the evenings are getting lighter and spring is definitely on its way – though the weather here in the UK doesn’t seem to have got the memo. Here at TWO we’ve got what you need to make the transition including the low-down on the pre-fashion week prep. Neil Moodie gives us his thoughts on the latest trends and his creations for the shows. Liz Martins tells us about blowing glitter on people’s faces and working with new talent. Frey-ja Barker talks us through her current skincare must-haves – so if your skin has suffered this winter help is at hand! And Lisa Kirwan helps us take our make-up from winter to spring. We have an interview with one of the hardest working ladies in the make-up business. For the past 20 years Louise Young has been the make-up artist for dozens of films and events from James Bond to the Olympics – she’s also continued to be a teacher and mentor to young make-up artists all whilst creating a beautiful range of brushes and make-up. Plus DJ Lliana Bird takes us through her favourite 3 list and there are plenty of stunning photo-shoots in this issue. Enjoy. The TWO team.

Submissions – For BEAUTY stories we look for a minimum of three different images with variation of make-up but that are clearly from the same shoot. For FASHION focused stories, we prefer a minimum of five shots with changes of styling. Please understand that we receive a vast amount of emails each day and it can take us a while to work through and get back to everyone. We truly appreciate your time and effort submitting to TWO magazine. Please email submissions@ two-magazine.com

THE CREATOR OF PRODUCTS FOUND IN PRO KITS ALL OVER THE WORLD, AN ENCYCLOPEDIC KNOWLEDGE OF MAKEUP AND THE FRIENDLIEST PERSON ON SET, LOUISE YOUNG IS A MAKE-UP MULTITASKER WHO HAS TAUGHT SOME OF THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS.

14

Where are you right now? I am in Norwich where I live. When did you decide to become an MUA? I guess it was something that evolved as when I was at school it wasn’t a career path that was presented or discussed – at least not in my school. I had an interest in films from an early age and collected film annuals and biographies of the Hollywood stars probably from the age of around 9 or 10. I made the stars in the books up with crayons so I think perhaps I always wanted to do it! Are you self-taught or did you train? I trained in basic make-up when I was 19 and then worked for make-up companies for a few years. I then did weddings, music videos and fashion shoots for 10 years before training at Greasepaint when I was 29 in film, TV, theatre and special effects. Which other make-up artist(s) helped you along the way? I think my training at Greasepaint really helped – the principal and founder Julia Cruttenden was very supportive of me. How would you define your style… is there a particular period that influenced you most? Well, I love the glamour of old Hollywood especially 1940s but because I do a wide range of work from fashion to period films I have to be able to interpret every brief and have a wide knowledge. What do you look for from an assistant? Reliable, loyal, polite, professional, good skills, common sense.

T WO M AGAZ I N E # 34 JAN / F E B 2 016

15

How do you feel the industry has changed since you started? I guess the biggest change is the huge increase in the amount of people wanting to be make-up artists. When I started there were only a very few courses and the BBC training programme was still in place. Now there are lots of courses around the country – however I would say that only a handful are recognised in the industry so anyone wanting to train needs to be extremely selective and do their research on where to train as they could waste a lot of money choosing a course that is not known in the industry.

Outside of make-up, what’s your passion? I love music – especially going to see live bands. I really enjoy going to festivals. I also collect vintage clothes, sunglassses, hats, swimwear, make-up containers, magazines – it’s getting out of hand really!

16

What prompted you to create your own make-up products? I had always thought that one day I would have my own range of brushes then in 2006 I shut my fingers in a minibus door whilst on set. I thought I had lost them and as I am right handed it would have meant the end of my career so I decided to start the brush range. Luckily my hand recovered and I found I loved creating products and discovered a passion for business as well. I set out to make a range of make-up that I could do any job with – it really helps working on big films as I speak to other make-up artists and get feedback on the products. Can you tell us your guilty pleasure? Well I don’t know if I would describe it as a guilty pleasure but people are always surprised to know I am a lifelong AC/DC fan! I’m going to see them again twice this year – making it 10 times. I love them!

S/S16 HAIR TRENDS FASHION SEASONS HAVE CHANGED. WHAT WERE TWICE A YEAR ARE NOW FOUR. I QUITE OFTEN FIND MYSELF WORKING ON PRE-FALL AND RESORT COLLECTIONS IN BETWEEN THE MAIN SHOWS, WHICH ALSO MAKES BEAUTY PREDICTIONS A TAD HARDER AND A LOT MORE TRANSIENT.

DNA MODELS

I’m going to focus on SS16 shows, which actually saw quite a lot of natural looking hair (the models “looking like themselves” was bantered around a lot at hair and make-up tests). Of course there were some ‘looks’ but they were few and far between in comparison to previous seasons gone by. Why is that I ask myself? Well there are a couple of things. Firstly, people are very time sensitive these days so a quick easy look bodes well for busy women. Also designers want their clothes to sell, so simple hair and make up doesn’t detract away from the looks, nor alienate the collection to certain types of people. Designers like John Galliano still stick their neck out with beauty looks. Currently designing Maison Margiela, he allowed Eugene Souleiman to go wild hair-wise with coloured textured beehives, long and wide backcombed frizz as well as geisha buns occasionally adorned with cling film. This is the stuff fashion hair is made of, albeit only on the odd occasion. Other apparent trends amongst the naturalness were a varying selection of hair or head accessories.

The Saint Laurent and Miu Miu tiaras, Dolce & Gabbana printed headscarves and headbands, Chanel’s metallic headbands, Ashish’s large sequins, The Gucci beret, Rodarte’s metallic floral barrettes, plus the odd braid here and there as seen at Louis Vuitton and Celine, to name a few. So what was my favourite trend of the season? I created a textured windswept beach look at Belstaff that I liked, using Windle and Moodie Texture Cream and Invisible Day and Night Cream to get the look, but what I loved the most was the return to actual haircuts that have appeared on models recently. The Joan of Arc Bob on newcomers Heather Kemesky and Lou Schoff or the late 70s/early 80s curly halo rock chick haircut (or curly bangs as it’s referred to in the US) as seen on Steffy Argelich and Mica Arganaraz. Their haircuts define their look with it being so definite, and it’s a welcome, refreshing change from long natural hair. My summary: Adorn, texturise, go big and up (hair I mean) or cut it off! See you next time. Neil x.

VALENTINE’S DAY SIGNALS MANY THINGS FOR ME. THE WORST OF WINTER IS FINALLY OVER, AND THE LIGHTER NIGHTS ARE COMING IN. IT REALLY IS A TIME TO START LOOKING FORWARD TO ALL THE NEW TRENDS THAT THE BURGEONING SPRING SEASON HAS TO OFFER US, BUT WHILE IT IS

T WO M AGAZ I N E # 34 JAN / F E B 2 016

STILL COLD OUTSIDE, IT’S GOOD

28

TO INFUSE OUR LOOK WITH ROMANTIC WINTER HUES. AS THE SHOWS SEEM SO LONG AGO, HERE’S MY LITTLE REMINDER OF WHAT TO HAVE IN YOUR MAKE-UP BAG THIS SPRING.

Despite the fact that we are looking forward to better weather (we’ve only been waiting an eternity), our skin is wind-burned and partied out. We need super hydration and a touch of Californian tan to hide the months of hibernation. If a Californian jaunt is a little beyond your reach, no need to panic! A bottle of my favourite Clarins Liquid Bronze Self Tanner will bring you the hydrating, softly tanned skin that Tom Pecheux created on the runways of Balmain this season. To enhance a tanned skin even further, use cream products such as NARS Multiples to create a soft bronze definition without harsh lines or an orange undertone. Remember we aren’t exactly in summer yet, so keep your tan soft and natural. Using highlighters such as Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector are the perfect

MAC COSMETICS

accompaniment to bring out the beauty in a tan. If your skin is oily, then don’t forget that this wonder product comes in a powder version too, which means a glow is still achievable without your skin looking oily or wet.

Despite my excitement that spring is only around the corner, a part of me still feels nostalgic for the winter – and that’s absolutely fine as there was definitely a call for a soft, vampy romantic mouth on the spring-summer catwalks. Givenchy paired a glossy, berry mouth with a tanned, highlighted skin to bridge the gap between summer and winter and to ensure you’re making the most out of the winter lipsticks you raided MAC for at the start of the autumn/winter season. The reds that are popular all year round look particularly good on a spring skin, so take a leaf from the book of DKNY and ensure that your mouth is looking super sexy and romantic this Valentine’s day. My new favourite red lipstick, Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Red Carpet Red’ is comfortable and longwearing and will no doubt be a staple in your make-up bag this spring.

T WO M AGAZ I N E # 34 JAN / F E B 2 016

As if spring itself wasn’t amazing enough, you’ve got the added bonus on being able to wear less make-up! No need to hide wind burn or the red nose you’ve had from your winter long cold. Swap your winter smokey eye for the new eye focus, mega-watt lashes. Stack them on top of one another – the spikier the better for a nod to the 60s that was seen at so many SS16 shows. At Marni, they spiked the lashes all around the eye for a full-on glamorous effect.

TALES FROM THE CHAIR

Liz Martins is a tireless make-up maverick who brings her milkshake to the yard! An in-demand MUA with a passion for fashion and music.

MY KIT HAS BEEN A GLITTER, METALLIC PIGMENT AND STICKER EXPLOSION RECENTLY…

the model and her emotions – gorgeous styling by

I did a shoot that focused on the global use of the

pink into the lip so it was more of a stain than

‘Emoji’ and in doing so I got to plaster my model’s face and body with stickers using them to applique a mask on her face and literally covering her whole torso in them. Taking them off not so fun… a lot of Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil was used! I got to use tattoo templates and water application tattoos to create ‘sleeves’ and a whole back plate – so much fun, a little break from the usual beautifying I do! I also got to chuck glitter all over the models face…

Hannah Elwell and hair by Aaron Carlo – I kept the make-up really fresh and wearable – mushroomy /neutrals on the eyes and I rubbed in a mauvey/ a lipstick pout. London Fashion Week is almost upon us and I’m in preparation for the shows. I so look forward to working with the Queen of face applique, Phyliis Cohen. We’re working on the PPQ show together and it’s very exciting! I will tell you all about it next issue!

well, blow it on, I’m not that mean!

Before I go I just want to mention two launches

A trend that has crossed over to spring/summer

Matte Skin Tint. If, like me, you live for tinted

is metallic and there is nothing as pretty and eye catching as a molten silver eye or liner pared with gorgeous, luminous porcelain skin. I shot a story for Flair Magazine using metallics set against the styling (that was pure white). We shot it in the Shangri-La hotel at The Shard. It was incredible with the most amazing views over London – it looked really sculptural and architectural, cannot wait for it come out in print! I love shooting with young emerging talent and it was an absolute pleasure to shoot with young gun Daniel Ciofo, a great eye for capturing ‘realness’. We shot a really simple studio story focusing on

that are mega – one from NARS for their Velvet moisturiser but want a bit more coverage and a velvet matte finish, well, look no further – this is the bomb! Finally BareMinerals BareSkin Complete Coverage Serum Concealer not only banishes imperfections but has built in serum/skincare in it too – all colours are in my kit now, it’s a winner! Laterz Beauty Banshees!!! Liz x

Easy On The Eyes

T WO M AGAZ I N E # 34 JAN / F E B 2 016

TWO’S RACHEL TOLEDO TALKS TO LISA POTTER-DIXON, BENEFIT BRAND AMBASSADOR AND AUTHOR OF BEST SELLING MAKE-UP BOOK EASY ON THE EYES .

44

What is the mission statement of the book? Easy On The Eyes is full of quick, easy eye make-up looks! My mission is to prove that understanding and applying eye make-up can be a fun and accessible experience for every woman. No matter how busy your schedule – whether you have a ridiculously full inbox, looming essay deadlines, or 2 kids hanging from your ankles – great make-up to enhance your natural beauty can be achieved in mere minutes. Each look can be completed in 5, 15 or 30 minutes, so no matter what your style, how much time you have to get ready, or what equipment you have to hand, you can go from now to WOW! in no time. What inspired you to write the book? I was getting so many tweets and messages from real women wanting to know how to enhance their eyes, create the perfect eyeliner flick and get the ultimate smoky eye. So I wanted to create a book that made eye make up easy and accessible, no matter how much time you have.

INSTAGRAM.COM/LISA_BENEFIT TWITTER.COM/LISA_BENEFIT seconds. Beauty Blender for a flawless base. Crown Brush brushes… like, all of them!!! They’re my faves! Z Palettes have saved my back due to the amount of products I can decant in them! Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow for a dreamy glow. Make Up For Ever eyeshadows and artist Plexi-Gloss – the pigment and finish in both are beautiful. Benefit They’re Real! – the best mascara in the land… even better now that it comes in blue! Nude ProGenius Treatment Oil for the softest skin. The Christian Louboutin lipsticks, mainly because I can wear them as a necklace! Ha! What would you be if you weren’t a make-up artist? A zoo keeper! I love animals so much. I can do an epic dolphin impression, so I reckon I would have done well in the sea life section!

What inspires you as a make-up artist? My awesome team inspire me. We’ve worked together for over seven years. They are all so talented in their own way and I learn so much from them and they inspire me to be the best that I can be.

Where are some of your favorite places – anywhere in the world – to buy make-up or beauty treatments? Sephora in New York for everything that I never knew I needed! Walgreens in San Fran for the essentials. Selfridges in London for an afternoon of playing in make-up. Benefit Carnaby Street for an eyebrow tint and wax. Dryby London for a blow dry on my lions mane! Spa nails in Teddington, South London, to visit my epic nail artist Michael Do.

What’s one thing you don’t like about the industry? Oooh this is a hard question! I’d probably say the long hours. I love my job soooo much, but I am writing this 25 days into a 36 day stretch so you catch my drift! Ha!

Is there a common error that make-up artists make? So many brilliant make-up artists lack confidence. I always tell my team that if you don’t believe in you, no-one will. It’s not arrogance, it’s a positive vibe that will get you far.

What do you love the most about being an MUA? Making women look and feel beautiful. List some of your favorite products and why? Benefit Gimme Brow for a natural looking brow in

ACN E

Often associated with teenagers, sadly it can persist long into adulthood. In fact, acne typically starts aged 8-12, peaks 15-18 and resolves by 25. Although 90% of acne affects adolescents, sadly 12% of women will suffer until 44 and it is not uncommon for women to have a first outbreak at 35 years of age! Acne ranges from comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), to deep, inflamed, pustules and cysts, which can cause scarring, and occurs when the glands next to hair follicles in the skin produce too much sebum and block the follicle. Bacteria, which live normally on the skin then multiply and infect the blocked pore. Causes are complicated but it is not linked to poor diet or dirty skin. In fact, over-cleansing can even aggravate the skin. There is no evidence that sunlight improves acne and neither is it infectious! Early treatment is really important to stop scarring and includes topical creams and gels, antibiotics creams or tablets through to oral Roaccutane that requires dermatology input and is reserved for the very worst scarring acne or acne resistant to all other treatment. As a rule of thumb the order that treatments are typically used are:

– Topical Benzyl Peroxide – Topical antibiotics – Combination Benzyl Peroxide and antibiotic creams – Retinoid creams/gels – Oral Roaccutane The oral contraceptive pill can be effective as it supresses hormone fluctuations that increase sebum production. If your acne is moderate to severe, your doctor should start higher up the treatment list. All acne creams can be drying and a slow wean on is best, otherwise people tend to stop because they can’t tolerate drying flaking skin. A pleasing side effect of retinoids is stimulation of collagen growth and therefore wrinkle improvement! If all treatments, up to and including retinoids, fail, your GP should refer you to a dermatologist for consideration of using oral Roaccutane.
