elcome to another issue of TWO, the magazine for professional and
aspiring make-up artists.
Alongside our regular features we have some gorgeous submissions from incredibly talented photographers, make-up artists and stylists to hopefully inspire you. We interview Canadian-born Tahira Herold, whose beautiful work gracefully adapts to film, editorial and fashion. We also take a look at HD Brows who continue to successfully grow their reputation as leaders in

the brow market whilst diversifying within the beauty industry.

On the subject of growing, we have a few small changes planned for TWO in the coming months which we’ll keep you posted about. Ultimately we aim to make the magazine more accessible and completely revamp our website to offer you a better experience. As well as the amazing creatives who have submitted their work to us over the past couple of years, we also want to say an extra special thank you to that lovely lot over there on the right – our regular contributors who take time out of their hectic schedules to help make TWO happen each issue. We hope you enjoy this issue and please do let us know your thoughts at www.twitter.com/TWOmagazine or via any of our contributors links. The TWO team. x
Submissions If you would like to submit photos please note that we look for strong beauty stories that have a minimum of three different images with variation of make-up but that are clearly from the same shoot. For fashion focused stories, we prefer a minimum of five shots with changes of styling. Please be aware that we receive a vast amount of emails each day and it sometimes takes us a while to work through and get back to everyone. We truly appreciate your time and effort submitting to TWO magazine. Thank you. Please email submissions@two-magazine.com Please do not email regarding work experience or internship as we are currently unable to take anyone on. Thank you.

What was it that made you want to become a make-up artist? I have just always done it, from when I was about four, playing dress-up and so on. At nine I was cutting my mum’s hair, not amazingly, but wearably! At about 12, my mother’s friend gave me a box of her discarded/unused make-up and extra ‘gifts with purchase’ from all the department store brands. That was my first kit that I used for make-up for school plays and fashion shows in high school and college. But I didn’t really realise I could do it as a job. Finally, one night in London, on a trip around Europe with my friend, I decided to study make-up while finishing Uni. Are you self-taught or did you train somewhere? I did the make-up section of a beauty/estheticians course at a small up/art theory, and I still use all I learned there every single day. I did a few workshops over the years and have had people informally mentor me, but mostly I am self-taught. We all are. How would you define your style… Is there a particular period that influenced you most? All mixed up! I do many different kinds of work and pull influences from and for each one. I am very influenced by historical looks. I love sculptured classic looks of America in the 40s and 50s, the colour and texture that came in the 80s, but also 17th Century European paintings. In more creative make-up work, I have looked to traditional tribal make-up and body decoration from all over the world. I love skin and lips. I love seeing the model/client/actor shine through the make-up and I love mixing colours, textures, styles and finishes. I think it’s my mixed heritage. I can never choose just one thing! Which other make-up artist helped you along the way? Every single one I ever met! Early in my career I was taken under the wing of a hair and make-up designer who helped me enter the industry. My experience and my work is quite varied, and I have

to each job I do. Kevyn Aucoin (via his books) was my first teacher. One of my early teachers, Yves, trained with Danni Sanz from Make Up For Ever and I learned a lot from him about artistic makeup and pushing yourself. Morag Ross taught me volumes when I worked with her on The Aviator about period shapes and style, details and excellence. I have had to learn a lot on my own by looking at other MUAs, past and present, and the many people I have assisted or worked alongside with teach me daily. What do you look for when someone approaches you about assisting? I look for eagerness and professionalism. Emails need to be properly written as letters and not be too personal. I want to see a willingness to help and learn, and and eye… You have to have an eye… That’s the only thing you can’t learn. You can train it, but you can’t create it.

Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? I think you can find beauty everywhere, in everyone. In people, it is in their kindness and Grace, in the world, it is light and lighting. Who or what inspires you? It’s a cliché but everything visually interesting… Films, paintings, people, books, light, colour, fabric, prints. I particularly love flowers, I am endlessly taking close-ups and looking at the colours and shading. How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? It’s changed tremendously! The internet was in its infancy when I started, there was no YouTube tutorials to learn from, no online have much more choices of colour, texture, finish and performance. I worry about the amount of make-up and beauty advice out there and the blurred lines between reality and digital alteration. It pains me to see beautiful girls/women plastering themselves in what I call ‘fakery’ to give themselves a certain appearance they feel makes them beautiful and therefore acceptable. It makes me sad. One product you would advise to never leave home without? As an MUA, grease palette with lots of colours like a Kryolan, Le Maquillage or Make Up For Ever. You can do anything with some skin tone and primary colours. As a person, sunscreen for your skin and lips! What do you like to do in your free time? I have a toddler so free time is a mythical construct to me. But I do love to cook, bake and research the many projects I think I have time to get involved in.

Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. Many years ago I was working with a very famous, well loved elderly actor (he was very famous in his youth as well). He was in full period dress… wig and moustache. Suddenly I saw him from far dipping his finger in a little pot and smearing it on his lips. When I walked over he had a shiny pink sparkly gloss on his lips! I asked what he was doing, to which he just replied “Want some? It’s lovely! Smells like strawberries.” He thought it was lip balm and didn’t realise it was pink and sparkly!

So my clients often ask me if they really have to use a serum… No one actually has to, however I think once you’ve found the right one for you, you’ll never not use a serum again. They are designed to be used underneath your moisturiser as they can actually penetrate the skin at a deeper level. They are to be used as a treatment, a treatment for different things depending on what your main concern is. If you imagine you are building two identical houses except one has sturdy foundations deep into the ground when the other is simply built on the surface. The house without the foundations may form cracks and subsidence in the building where the ground moves, it may also get damp in the walls and floor etc… Yet the house with support of the foundations deep below the surface will probably last longer without any of these problems due to the structural support

LIZ MARTINS shares INSIDER tips and tales in HER exclusive COLUMN
66
Summer is finally here and so I thought I’d start my tales with my favourite products to keep skin looking buff and youthful during the summer months. I am an avid fan of sheet masks (I can’t stop buying them from wishtrend.com) and love the intense moisturising ones. I also always carry ones for acne-prone and tired skin – great for when a model steps off a plane and comes straight to the studio. Snail Mucin has also found its way into my kit. My assistant Sadie introduced me to its skin tightening properties and now it’s a firm fixture! Of course I can’t talk about summer skin without talking about SPF. I always carry Sisley factor 50 broad spectrum facial sunscreen with me, it’s the best and works well under make-up also. Yes it’s pricey, but for me, by investing in this you’re protecting your skin from those pesky wrinkles and liver spots in the future! Summer is the time for no make-up make-up and although I have been shooting autumn/winter (such is our industry)
I still apply those rules when doing a model’s make-up. I loathe the ‘cake face’ so keep it as light as possible by using BB’s and tinted moisturisers. However, I’ve fallen in love with Le MaqPro’s base palettes. I particulary love the one designed by make-up maverick Jan Sewell. I can pretty much mix up most skintones with this little baby. I like to buff it in using a little moisturiser on a foundation brush – a little goes a long way. I also loved the lip palette she designed which I used on a recent ad campaign for Paul’s Boutique which was all about gorgeous luminous skin and pale pinky nude lips and blue and white liner details. I was once again asked to head the make-up team for M&S got to use my favourite Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipsticks in dark berry hues to compliment the beautiful earthy tones on the runway. I’m a huge fan of her Goddess Skin Clay Mask too – baby new skin in a nano second! My last word on here is about fake tans. I do a lot of work for lingerie brands, with this month being no exception, so I was so glad that I had Xentans Premium Sunless Tan in my kit (thanks Wizard PR!). This gives a great deep tan (not tangolicious) and washes off, so no stroppy models! Love it! See you in the Fall guys n dolls. Have a great summer! Liz x

Make-up trends come and go, but it seems the perfect brow – be it big and bold or the natural look – is here to stay. One company has been there since the beginning and still remains at the forefront of the colossal brow business. FRANCESCA NEIL hether you’re a make-up artist wanting to update your skills or someone who is looking for the perfect everyday brow product, HD Brows has got it covered. Created and developed by Nilam Holmes-Patel in 2008, the HD Brows process involves a personal consultation, before the stylists utilise a range of skills comprising of custom colour blending, designing, creating and tailoring the shape, as well as customised aftercare. Holmes-Patel realised that brow care and shaping was
often overlooked within the beauty and make-up industry, so flourished at the opportunity and created a tailored treatment technique that would be bespoke to every client, rather than opting for a ‘one shape fits all’ method. “I initially started HD Brows to help people discover a natural brow shape. It was meant to be more about education and before I knew it, it had turned into a brand. The company grew fast and I still struggle to keep up now! I am continually surprised and delighted by the worldwide success and interest;
Nine years later and HD Brows continues to be the leading brand of choice for many, with over 5,500 HD Brow stylists across the UK and growing weekly.

69 “ WE REALLY FEEL THAT WE’VE CREATED THE PERFECT RANGE OF BROW, EYE, SKIN AND LIP ESSENTIALS THAT EVERYONE CAN USE.”
Not content with cornering the brow market, the company launched a make-up range ‘Make Up by HD Brows’ in 2014 that included eye primers, false lashes, brushes,

palettes, and, of course, a supreme range of brow products. The collection was developed in collaboration with celebrity make-up artist Francesca Neil.
“Creating naturally beautiful looks and a flawless finish is what I am known for amongst my celebrity clients. From the start, we wanted to create a capsule collection of highquality products, with a series of shades that would suit all skin types.

Pretty Honest is a book that every woman should own. A bold statement maybe, but whether you are make-up and skincare savvy or someone who uses the bare minimum and doesn’t even own a nail file this book will contain something that revolutionises your approach to your beauty and skincare regime. Sali Hughes, a make-up artist turned journalist, has been writing for over seventeen years and has been the Guardian’s beauty columnist for the past five. Easy to follow – you can dip in and out of the bits relevant to you or read it cover to cover – you absolutely get Hughes’ opinion on what she does, and does not like but she doesn’t hold back making sure you have all the information you need to make your decision. This book reads like a friend sitting on the edge of your bath as you get ready telling you just what you need to know. The ideal present for the women in your life – the ultimate book on beauty and skincare.

In the 60s and 70s, it really didn’t get much bigger than starring as a ‘Bond Girl’. Antigua PLACES NORFOLK The world is such a beautiful place but there’s no place like back home in Norfolk
Capri, Italy
The North Norfolk coastline has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Holkham is a hard one to beat on a hot summers day. Even on a grey wet day the light is extraordinary.
SAN DIEGO I discovered San Diego (and the US west coast) last year and fell hopelessly in love with it. From the amazing food to the beautiful beaches. The vibe was so chilled and relaxed after crazy, busy London.
CARIBBEAN
MY Three FAVOURITE… FREY-JA BARKER
I first visited Barbados during a family holiday for my Godfather’s 50th birthday and got the bug for the Caribbean! I have since been to Dominican Republic, Cuba and Antigua and plan on going to many more. It’s quite simply paradise. Just like you see in holiday brochures.
BOOKS When it comes to reading I binge read book after book after book then nothing for a while. I love pretty much anything by Diane Chamberlain and Jodi Picoult. They have a similar style of writing about moral issues and are both queens at adding a twist or two. They both tend to base their stories in America, so if I fancy something a bit darker and based at home
in London, then I reach for Martina Cole.

Chelsea, according to Wikipedia, ‘is a neighborhood on the West Side of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. The district’s boundaries are roughly 14th Street to the South, 30th Street to the North, the western boundary of the Ladies’ Mile Historic District – which lies between the Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) and Seventh Avenue – to the East, and the Hudson River and West Street to the West.’ But according to me, and most make-up artists in New York City, it’s the area where we spend a massive chunk of our time as so many of the photographic and sound stage studios reside here. MILK studios [ www.milkstudios.com ] which are located on West 15th is one of my favourite places to get a job booking, not only because of the spacious and well equipped make-up areas, but they also have amazing catering, an awesome coffee bar and they love dogs, so I’m able to have my pup on set with me there. MILK also run an alternative venue to the CFDA official tents for New York Fashion week.

Most women, if asked to define their two main signs of ageing, site sagging and the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and creases. As I often describe, solutions exist, using fillers and botulism toxin but a point comes where these, even in combination,

are not doing the job and another approach is needed. I think I may have found the answer: The thread lift. Threads are the next step in face rejuvenation and offer a facelift that can be done in 30 minutes and not involve the surgeons knife. Working

As some of you know, I spend a lot of my time banishing wrinkles, lifting cheeks and lips, straightening noses and generally trying to hold back the signs of ageing that eventually come to us all. But it seems we reach this time of year and it becomes even more important as we strive to get beach ready – and that doesn’t just apply to bikini bodies but also to fresh faces. I am really excited about a new treatment being introduced to the clinic: The thread face lift.
are made of a natural substance – polylactic acid ( or PLA ). This has been used for many years in medical applications such as suture thread, orthopaedic pins, screws and nails for bone fractures, etc. Along the thread are small cones, not much bigger than a pin head. These cones are key to the way Silhouette Soft® works. After a careful consultation with a trained doctor the agreed areas for improvement are expertly marked out. Using local anaesthetic the skin is numbed and then a thread with either 8,12 or 16 cones is inserted under the skin via a needle. The procedure is not particularly painful because of the local
anaesthetic. Once the threads are in place the doctor gently moves the skin and underlying tissue back over the cones and so anchor it into its new place. And the good news is that it lasts for 18 months as the threads are slowly reabsorbed over this time. In terms of complications, they are few. As with any procedure involving a needle there is a risk of pain, bruising, bleeding, haematoma and a very small risk of infection. If the sutures are over tightened there can be some initial puckering of the skin but to dimpling at the entry point. Otherwise the complication possibilities are low but the practitioner will always talk you through this as part of the consent process. Areas that can be treated include the cheeks, jawline, eyebrow and temple with the same aim for all: pull sagging skin back and achieve a more youthful and fresher look. Sometimes called the ‘puppet facelift’ the procedure and before and after photos can be seen [ here ].
