I
t’s been a really fantastic year for TWO with six beautiful issues, some inspirational contributors writing for us, a host of events attended, meeting up with lots of lovely readers, a first print edition and the launch of a new website. We’ve got even bigger things planned for 2016 but first there’s the Christmas and New Year party season to see out in style. For those still in need of last minute shopping inspiration or indeed anyone looking to treat themselves we have some great suggestions in this issue courtesy of a special bumper edition of Most Wanted. Frey-ja Barker has some tips on how to get the most kissable lips for New Year’s Eve. We also chat with the Julia Townend – Queen of the body paint and one of the friendliest make-up artists in the business – about her JT Makeup Studio range – the perfect foils and glitters to get creative with this season. Plus What The Pros Carry and all your favourite regular features. We hope you love the issue – and please also check out the new TWO website at www.two-magazine.com. We’re pleased with how it looks – especially the collected covers in the archive page – and there’s a snazzy shop coming in the New Year. Have a look and let us know what you think. Thank you for reading – and thank you to everyone that has supported TWO or shared their love of the magazine this year. Thanks also to everyone that makes TWO possible, especially our regular writers, tireless editorial team and our friends and families for putting up with our total make-up obsession. Before you know it we’ll be talking about the AW16 fashion shows and how to transition skincare from winter to spring but for now we want to wish all our readers a very Happy Christmas and New Year, have a wonderful break and thank you all so much for reading.
Submissions If you would like to submit photos please note that we look for strong beauty stories that have a minimum of three different images with variation of make-up but that are clearly from the same shoot. For fashion focused stories, we prefer a minimum of five shots with changes of styling. Please be aware that we receive a vast amount of emails each day and it sometimes takes us a while to work through and get back to everyone. We truly appreciate your time and effort submitting to TWO magazine. Thank you. Please email submissions@two-magazine.com Please do not email regarding work experience or internship as we are currently unable to take anyone on. Thank you.

JULIA TOWNEND
Where are you right now? In an exciting position, I know where my skills fit into the industry as a make-up artist and I also have a make-up product business called JT Makeup Studio which is enabling me to develop more skills as a business woman. My products are sold at ScreenFace, PAM, Love-Makeup, Illusion Magazine and The Face Painting Shop and early next year they will be available in America. Due to running a product business I work mainly as adaily make-up artist on productions as this allows me time to support the development of my product range. I am very focused and hardworking, always busy which is overwhelming sometimes but I’ve learnt to be super organised. When did you decide to become a make-up artist? When I was 14 years old during the summer holidays at my Grandmas in Cornwall I was reading a copy of her Vogue magazine. The front cover featured Margaux Hemmingway, a model in the 1970’s and I thought she was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen. That image then inspired me to learn about make-up. I think Margaux Hemmingway set the style for future natural beauty icons such as Brooke Shields in the ‘80s and Cindy Crawford in the ‘90s. Are you self-taught or did you train somewhere? When I left school I initially trained in hairdressing and beauty therapy. I moved to London when I was 18 years old and joined in with the New Romantic Movement. This was my initial beginnings in make-up as I used to do my friends hair and make-up before going out to the Blitz Club in Covent Garden. I realised then that I needed more training and while working as a technician at the London College of Fashion I completed my training. I am a believer in good training. Which other make-up artist(s) helped you along the way? Many people have inspired and supported me. When I was working at LCF two of my managers Liz McLafferty and Jo Dingemanns opened my mind into the research areas of fashion and film while always encouraging me to develop my skills. My career started off in the fashion industry as a make-up and body artist but over the last 10 years I have worked more in film and television.

It is a tough industry and I think you have to be very passionate about make-up to survive as its hard work and long hours.
I credit Spob OBrien, Louise Young, Jan Sewell, Kate Benton, Sharon Martin, Mandy Gold and Tanya Noor as make-up designers who have encouraged and supported me to develop as a make-up artist. They are all extremely talented artists who inspire many people and are my role models in the industry. I learn something new on every job and I love that products and methods are constantly evolving. Spob, Sharon, Kate and Jan are leading hair and make-up designers in the UK, they are all creative, focused, hardworking women who are very supportive of their teams. One other make-up artist I should mention is David Horne, who has been a real mentor to me in the last two years. David is an exceptionally creative and innovative make-up artist as well as being an outstanding educator and a voice I listen to as my own business career has developed. How would you define your style… is there a particular period

that influenced you most? In body painting I am inspired by history, fantasy and fairytale and emerges in my work. I work on a variety of films but really enjoy working on period productions and have been fortunate this year to work on Victorian, ‘20s, ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘80s films. I would have to say my favourite period is the 1950s because of icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. I enjoy researching for ideas and gain inspirations from past periods and fashion designers. What do you look for from an assistant? It’s important to be the best assistant you can be. It is a tough industry and I think you have to be very passionate about make-up to survive as its hard work and long hours. I like people who can think on their feet, who can work out what I need without asking. I generally like to get to know the people who become my assistants and they need a good sense of humour and be prepared to work hard. I look for assistants who are professional and well trained, that’s important to me and someone who doesn’t mind making lots of tea.

How do you feel the industry has changed since you started? I started out in make-up in the 90s and it was hard. But I feel now there are even more make-up artists emerging due to the amount of colleges offering make-up courses. However, social media plays a big factor today and I would encourage any make-up artist starting out to get behind social media as it can be helpful in finding work. Products have changed consistently, I remember when MAC Cosmetics arrived in London in the mid 90’s and it created a new revolution within the make-up industry. It then lead to new companies forming such as Bobbi Brown, Nars, Smashbox and more recently Illamasqua. This can be a starting point for many new make-up artists to start their career working for a make-up company,

about the industry and how it works. It can take years to get established but it is achievable and one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. I feel privileged to work as a make-up artist. favourites but my ultimate book would be the Serge Leutens book of his work. It’s out of print now but his work is simply surreal and beautiful and you can find his work on the internet. Outside of make-up, what is your passion? I am a workaholic as when I am not filming I am working in my studio on my product range. However I enjoy spending time with my family when I can, my daughter Sarah is at University in Cambridge but I really enjoy our special time.

It’s been a whirl wind of red carpet events lately and I always find them fun and exciting.

I have been working with Simon Cowell’s partner, the very beautiful Lauren Silverman, and for each event we went for a lux modern look. I am championing Burberry Makeup for their Fresh Glow Foundation which is literally radiance in a bottle, it’s really light and dewy and it gives a gorgeous air-brushed luminous look to the skin. And the face contour sticks are a stroke of genius, they give you precision, blend beautifully and the tones are natural looking. Wendy Rowe, Creative Consultant at Burberry, really knows her stuff! My favourite lipstick for the red carpet is Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Red Carpet Red, it’s the perfect blue red, super chic and has such staying power. I also got to work again with rising star and Evening Standard Theatre Awards nominee, Ellie Bamber. Ellie was being dressed by Chanel and so of course used Chanel make-up for her face. Chanel have just launched a new base, Les Beige Healthy Glow Foundation, which I mixed with a little Blanc de
Bas. It’s very velvety and gives a medium coverage, which meant I didn’t even need to use any concealer. It’s completely seamless and it also contains SPF25 which is just brilliant! After going for a black liquid nod to the ‘60s liner, I didn’t want to wash her out with a pale lip as Ellie has alabaster skin. So, we picked a gorgeous mauvey/pink lipstick, Rouge Coco in Mademoiselle, which complimented her skin tone and lifted the whole look – the look was sensual and chic. It was then editorials for Stella magazine with the lovely actor Joanne Froggatt, from Downton Abbey, who was also the cover star and fashion spreads for Stylist. We had lots
Before I go I just want to talk about a couple of products that are on my hero list this month. If you want to try a new base that lets your skin breathe and is great for acne prone skin, please do go take a look at Oxygenetix. It’s a real game changer and the Hollywood A-list have kept this to themselves for a while! Take a look at www.cultbeauty.com And hair wise, I have found a new love in Rahua hair care products. They’re 100% organic so if you’re vegan this is for you. Super luxurious, your hair will feel lustrous and shiny, a real treat. Laters Lovely’s! Liz x

“ RAINBOW BRIGHTS” WORDS
HEI DI SCARLETT-KI NG
Fashion heavyweights Versace, Missoni, Giambattista Valli, Marc Jacobs and Max Mara all flashed pastel pinks, greens and orange painterly looks in their shows, however the hero for SS16 is royal blue. Here’s my fool-proof guide to wearing colour in 3 different styles to suit even the most unadventurous out there. Firstly, create a flawless base with primer, foundation and concealer. My favourites at the minute are: Arbonne Makeup Primer, NARS All Day Weightless Foundation and Estée Lauder Perfectionist Youth Infusing Brightening Serum and Concealer. FANCY FLICK //
You will need: • An
angle brush
• Mac
Fix+ spray
Decay Spectrum eyeshadow palette
• Urban
Spray your brush with the Fix+ to dampen and tap into your choice of bold shade (my pick is evidence or deep end) and starting on the outer corner of the eye, press colour along. A long wearing liner that gives your a shot of bold. Finish by curling lashes and adding loads of mascara.
ROSY WASH//
You will need: Maran Coconut Watercolour Eyeshadow in playa del pink, rainforest green or Polynesian purple
• Rosie
•A
finger or small flat brush
A stained dewy eye has been a popular look recently, it’s also such a great way to add colour without looking too much. Shake this product really well so the colour applies evenly on the eye, apply with a finger lightly or a brush dabbing on. It will set to create a gorgeously sheer watercolour effect on your lid that looks stunning on any eye. BRIGHT SMOKEY//
You will need: • Elizabeth Arden cream eye shadow color in blue pearl • K iki Cosmetics smart liner in 807 Indigo blue w For the more adventurous (and your next party) try applying the Elizabeth Arden Cream Eyeshadow around the entire lash line, building strength closest to the eye blending lighter out. This shade of aqua blue suits every eye shade. Add intensity with the Kiki Electric Blue Colour Pencil in the waterline to finish off the bold smokey effect.

KAREN LOUISE I NT E R VIE W B Y A S H ER C OLEM AN What was your route into the industry and do you have any tips for those wanting to do what you do? I first started out in this industry by mistake, I didn’t know this whole session world existed. I decided to train in Level 2 beauty therapy and straight away my teacher thought I already had a qualification in nails! From a young age I always played around with my own nails and getting creative on them. I started doing a few press events with OPI during training (after passing manicure/ pedicure of course) and then I got asked to do a photo shoot and the connections just went from there. I enjoyed my first photoshoot so much I knew i was going in the right direction so I made my Twitter account and started following like minded industry people. My tip would be to contact lots of photographers and make-up artists and ask them if they are testing so you can start to build your portfolio. Also make sure you create a Twitter and Instagram account, these are great bases for showcasing your work. And mainly, be persistent, it takes a lot of work but it’s great fun and rewarding.

Which one product do you never leave home without? I never leave home without my hand moisturiser. I have one in every bag so I don’t forget when I change over! My favourite hand moisturiser at the moment is L’occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream. How do you feel the industry has changed since you started? The industry for manicurists has got a lot bigger since I first started out as a session tech, which is good for up-and-coming manicurists wanting to get into session work. You need to be proactive on social media and create awareness of yourself. Social media is massive now and worldwide. I have even been contacted from music management companies in the USA via my Twitter page, asking me to work with their artists/singers when they are in London, so social media has made a big impact.
jobs ever, what has been your career highlight so far? Wow, so the Olympics was most definitely one of my biggest highlights of my career too, working with such great athletes with them wearing their countries flag on their nails before their big event was the most amazing experience. Following the Olympics I was asked to re-create all of the countries nail flag designs for the future Olympic events, and they were used at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. I’ve worked with many great celebrities and on big campaigns, I’ve also gone to other countries. I love my job as there’s always something different and new challenges. Recently I’ve worked on Britain’s Next Top Model and currently I’m working on
The X Factor getting the contestants ready for live shows which I’m really, really enjoying. Who is your favourite x factor judge and why!? My favorite X Factor judge is Simon Cowell, and I’m really liking Nick Grimshaw too. But I would love to get my hands on Rita Ora and Cheryl’s nails. They are both so beautiful and always so nicely polished. Okay so yes, I like them all this year!

ISLAND, ITALY
108
Ciao amici miei! Hello TWO readers, I’m taking you on a throwback journey of mine to the time I visited the gorgeous island of Capri, Italy. For those unfamiliar with Capri, it is bellisimo. An island off the Amalfi Coast, it’s been a gem of a getaway spot from the famous to families and it’s not hard to understand why. It’s an island so picturesque it leaves you feeling like you’re in a Fellini film – ready to jump in a fountain with a bottle of wine at any moment. From its crayola crayon coloured port to the hillside chairlift that takes you over Mt Solaro in Ana Capri [ www.capri.net/en/s/mount-solaro-cetrella ], every nook and crany of this island is exquisite. The original purpose of my trip was to meet up with my NY stylist friend, Ise White (a couple of hard working industry girls looking for some rest and relaxation) but I ended up meeting a lovely work contact and friend that has enhanced my career,
so I truly feel Capri has an air of magic! Ise had also invited NY fashion photographer Melissa Rodwell to join us. Melissa and I hit it off over cappuccinos and our love of Brooklyn. Several years later Melissa runs international photographers networking and educational site The Breed [ www.jointhebreed.com ] and she has placed me as the head of make-up artist content not only online but also hands-on. To start I will be teaching a fashion show make-up training course for The Breed in New York City in February 2016. My students who take this one day course will not only spend a day learning the ins and outs of working on fashion shows but also get the opportunity to have work experience backstage with me at NY Fashion Week. Check the website for more details. [ www.jointhebreed.com ]. But besides networking over late night vinos, my Capri experience was soul inspiring. I would suggest by starting in the port area where the docks are lined with boats, many of which you can rent
you won’t believe how each ingredient so simple can be so divine. It’s a small island but easy to get lost walking up and down one of its many cobblestoned stairways. Every twist and turn takes you past a house or wall that’s overgrown with bright flora. Walk up to the second highest point of Capri to Villa Jovis, the area where it’s said Tiberious, during the reign of the Roman empire, used to engage in wild parties. It must be why Capri, since the age of the golden Hollywood era, has attracted the worlds gliteratti. Just walk into many of the island’s restaurants or bars and you’ll see the walls lined with photos of famous faces that once drank in Jay-Z. Another superb way to get around the island is by scooter. My friends and I hired the man who rented the scooters to show us around while we were there. [ www.caprirentscooter.com ]. I warn you out for the day. Spend a day circling around the

As Christmas and the party season hurtles towards us we all yearn to look our best. So, I decided to have a look at some non-surgical treatments that can give you that quick and reliable transformation! Results are almost instantaneous and recovery is minimal.Treat it as a pick and mix and target those areas that bother you most. The only rule – research and find a trusted and experienced practitioner.
ITS THAT TIME OF YEAR – GET XMAS READY! EYEBROW/EYELASH SHAPING OR TINTING: They frame the face and are a focus that draws those admiring eyes to yours. Enhance your natural features by giving your eyebrows a chance to truly shine. Have a brow tidy and shape or go whole hog with 3D brows for definition. As an add on or stand alone, eyelash tinting enhances natural eye features even without make-up and you look stunning from the moment you wake. Great for the natural look if you are planning a sneaky holiday and want to look like you have mascara on in the pool without the panda stains!
the jabs is 2-4 weeks prior to party time! Botox temporarily freezes the muscles that cause wrinkles (lines between the brow, around the eyes, on the forehead etc.). When the muscles relax, the wrinkles fade away. Taking just a few minutes, with no down time, it’s easy and the results are excellent. Just find a practitioner who will make sure you look natural, still have movement but not wrinkles… ‘frozen is so old school’.
DERMAL FILLERS: This popular treatment can help make ‘disappear’ Hyaluronic acid fillers are the safest (reversible) and help smooth away those wrinkles, replace disappearing cheek bones, straighten noses and plump thinning lips! The list is actually endless and fillers are an excellent way to see overall facial enhancement. One trick to get rid of the tired hollows under the eyes is find a practitioner who is skilled in ‘tear troughs’ and you can get to that party looking like you have slept for a week. And best of all, taking just minutes to do, fillers last for up to a year. Remember, all of these treatments in the right hands are safe, fun and boost confidence, so do your

provides gorgeous, natural looking results. Look like you have that ‘Just got back from the beach’ look without anyone knowing you’ve been toiling away at the office or stressing over xmas shopping.
BOTOX: It’s totally possible to get rid of those wrinkles in time for that first party. It takes two weeks for full effect and you may need a top up so best time to take
