ith the ever present strong and sultry eye down the catwalk, recently we have seen a trend towards a more sinister, smokey-style that reeks of a glamorous gothic. And now with the autumn season upon us, there’s no more fitting time than right now to get gothed-up eye make-up as seen from designers such as Rodarte, Julien Macdonald and Versace. Here’s the top tips on this high trend alert…
STEP 1 ALL IN THE EYES
PHOTO
DKNY 2013
With any strong eye look I always begin with the eyes. I adore cream eyeshadows as they not only look super sexy but also keep the eyeshadow on for longer. My favourite right now is By Terry Ombré Blackstar Eyeshadow Pens. All the shades are divine but for this look try either Black Pearl or Ombré Mercure. Apply across the eyelid right into the lash line and blend away the edges with your finger or a soft brush. With a flat or round tapered brush apply Laura Mercier Limited Edition satin matte eyeshadow in Dark Spirit onto the lid to really intensify this look. I love the texture of this shadow as it has the depth of a matte shadow but glides on and blends easily. Grab a clean fluffy brush and apply some loose setting powder or pressed powder and blend away any edges on the eye above the crease and up to the eyebrow. This look relies heavily (excuse the pun!) on liner so I’ve opted for Becca new Ultimate Creme Liner in Romanesque. It’s a 3-in-1 liner that goes on like W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 13 // O C TO B ER 2013

a creamy gel but can also be smudged. Apply all the way around the lash line and smudge, apply a bit into the waterline as well to intensify the eye. To add the glam to this goth look it wouldn’t be right without false lashes – Liz Martins Inspire Lashes do just the trick as they really emphasise the eyeliner of the look.

It’s important to create a complete so that all attention is on the eyes. that will certainly make sure of this Skin Base. Next pat in a good cove under the eyes and on top of foun pick concealer right now is Maybel Concealer – it really does last ALL has the best coverage in a budget co sure the concealer is lighter than th to really emphasise the eyes. Ad powder to any glossy spots and con favourite bronzer.

hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? I knew I would always do something creative. I went to Chelsea College of Art and Design when I was 16 to do a foundation art course but it was at London College of Fashion that I slightly deviated. While on a theatrical costume making course, which I hated, I transfered on to the make-up course and very quickly began to love colour and painting in a different way. Growing up though, Cindy dolls and girls world would end up with biro and felt tip pen all over them!
Are you self-taught or did you train? I trained at London College of Fashion and then worked for MAC at Harvey Nichols when they first opened. I was in the right place at the right time and went on to assist Lesley Chilkes and then Pat McGrath – both legends in the make up world. I watched and learnt from both of them and as time went by developed my own style. How would you define your style? Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? The way I work is very organic and instinctive. I love using colour and texture and the challenge of creating looks never gets dull… I don’t think I can define an era that has inspired me as they all have. Who or what inspires you? Everything inspires me. Not a day goes by where I don’t take my phone out to take a picture of

a sunset, flowers, shadows on a building, animals or old pictures. All of them get stored in a library of inspiration. However, David Bowie was a huge inspiration when I first started make-up and I finally met him on a photo shoot and was struck dumb all I could think was OMG it’s David Bowie!!!!!! Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? All of them. I love the buzz of fashion shows – it’s quick and intense. On shoots, challenging yourself and working as a team to create beautiful images. Red carpet events where you’re working with an actress and waiting to see how they look in the pictures is always a little nerve racking. I feel blessed to be able to be part of it all. Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? This is a hard question! Apart from the obvious, sunscreen, which you can put on before you leave the house, I would probably say lip balm, based on the probability that you’d already have done your make-up before you left. Your top five favourite products? YSL Luxurious False Lash Effect mascara, Clinique CC cream, Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo, Smash Box Brow Tech and Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage 03 concealer.

Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? When I first started Lesley Chilkes took the time to give me advice and steer me in the right direction. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. We were on a very long job in South Africa and a very dear friend of mine who is a hairdresser and a bit of a joker had been playing jokes on all the crew. We became aware that he had a phobia or mild hysteria about snakes, so we decided to get our own back and bought a plastic snake. The whole crew were in on it and stories of deadly snakes got circulated at night time at the dinner table. My room was next to his and on the last day whilst we were shooting, the producer put the snake in his room. We pretended to do a last shot in my room and asked him to go and grab a bottle of wine from his mini bar. It was dark and we were in the middle of a reserve with lions, leopards, spiders and of course snakes. So, off he went to his room and there was the snake on the floor in his room. You could hear the screams for miles and of course one of the delighted photo assistants captured it all on video! No 2, putting black nail varnish on David Beckham for an Italian Vogue shoot. I was so nervous that my hands were shaking. My assistant was moisturising DB’s back with a glazed look on her face. I had to nudge her back to reality as she was taking rather a long time.

Do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? The industry has definitely changed. The change came with the digital era. Images from shows are seen instantly, magazines release images weeks before the issue goes on sale. Film has become a thing of the past. Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? I don’t think I can define beauty. A moment, a smile, a gesture, a place. As one of the most in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? I love reading and like nothing better than getting into bed early with a good book. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen that often but I’m on planes a lot so tend to catch up with movies and books then. What are your plans for the future? Any exciting projects to tell us about? Work-wise, lots of exciting things coming up but my one plan is to take my son to Vietnam. I recently went there on a trip and fell in love with it.

PERICONE BLUE PLASMA An intelligent multi-tasking product which combines a serum with facial peel without causing redness, irritation or damage to the skin. It combines three forms of action, a bio-specific peel to remove dead skin cells, micro-extraction to purify and remove pollutants and hydro-fusion to smoothes, soothes and hydrate the skin surface. Apply at night and wake in the morning with skin that radiates luminosity and clarity. Not only will it feel as smooth and soft as a baby’s bum but will be as plump too! KARIN HERZOG VITA A-KOMBI 1 This cream really uses the power of science! Karin Herzog have managed to stabilise pure oxygen and combining with vitamins A and E, it will not only help fight the first signs of ageing but it also deeply hydrate. The stabilised liquid oxygen transforms into a gas on contact with the skin forcing the nutrients and water deep into the skin, much like using the power of a rocket. This energises the collagen production in the cells whilst purifying and hydrating deep deep deep within, leaving skin brighter and clearer. GUERLAIN ABEILLE ROYALE JELLY ONE MONTH TREATMENT Royale jelly is an extremely rare substance produced by worker bees intended for the queen bee to feed upon. It contains vitamins,

minerals, fatty acids, sugars, essential amino acids and proteins and has the power to help with skin repair as well as increase suppleness and radiance. The treatment begins when the royal jelly beads controlled dose is mixed with the activating cream. Over night the two merge creating a magic product for the skin to feed on, day and night for one whole month. GLAMGLOW BRIGHT MUD FOR EYES This mask helps with lymphatic drainage to de-bag and de-puff the eye area. Peppermint leaf acts like a cold compress and oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen leaves the eye area brighter, fresher, and tighter whilst minimising fine lines and wrinkles. Simply tap around the eye area twice a week with finger tips, leave for 3 minutes and wipe off with a dry cloth for an instant bright eye pick me up. RODIAL CHIN AND NECK LIFT This wonder gel works by redensifing the skin around the chin and neck. The skin density and the firmness is improved by 68 percent in just 60 days. Using decapeptide, which stimulates fat burning, any fat or double chin effect is reduced. It also uses vitamin C to help fade out age spots. Volunteer testers saw a significant reduction in double chin volume by 1-2 ml. Any one feeling smarter yet? and works on ALL skin types without disturbing moisture balance. DERMALOGICA SOLAR DEFENSE BOOSTER SPF 50
Sometimes you’re shooting outdoors and talent needs UVA/UVB protection. Unlike regular sun protection (which can compromise the stability of the make-up applied over it), I can mix this “booster” into moisturizer or primer with the confidence that it will provide protection without messing with my make-up work.

FOUNDATION/CONCEALER I like to maintain a tightly edited kit and would rather work with a group of carefully chosen multi-use complexion products. I carry full coverage complexion products in my kit. I sheer them out to the desired consistency for each job. TEMPTU S/B PRO AIRBRUSH FOUNDATION
I also use this very versatile airbrush make-up as hand applied liquid foundation. It’s silicone based and works brilliantly with all the cream foundations in my kit. MAQ PRO (LE MAQUILLAGE PROFESSIONEL) FARD CRÈME FOUNDATIONS
These wax based cream foundations NEVER let me down. They offer truly versatile coverage and can be easily sheered out or built up as needed. The finish is skin-like and the formula is water/perspiration resistant. KRYOLAN DERMACOLOR CONCEALER WHEEL
Dermacolor’s intense coverage is legendary for addressing make-up challenges (tattoos, vitiligo, etc). The tightly edited palette contains a perfect selection of global skintones plus a rose tone corrector that doubles as blush. KRYOLAN MAKE-UP BLEND OR MAKE UP FOR EVER FLUID 246
I use these silicone fluids to sheer out full coverage foundations and color creams. It’s also great for mixing with loose pigments to create custom color products that can be hand applied or run through an airbrush.

POWDER/OIL CONTROL BEN NYE MEDIA PRO HD MATTE LOOSE POWDER
Color-free loose powder is always my first choice for setting make-up. It won’t alter foundation colors or change carefully designed effects. This highly refined (and amazingly affordable) powder sets beautifully without leaving a dry powdery look. KETT SETT HD PRESSED POWDER
I like that this pressed powder controls oil shine without matting the skin to a dry un-natural finish. That’s super important when you’re working in an HD format. TATCHA BLOTTING PAPER
Constant powder touch-ups over a long shoot day can create a cakey build-up on skin and will destroy a make-up’s HD compliancy. You need to remove excess oil shine without disturbing make-up. PRESSED/LOOSE COLOR I don’t carry specifically designated eyeshadow, blush, etc. I prefer to use highly pigmented pressed and loose pigment products that can be applied anywhere on the face and body. In my kit right now are: VISEART EYESHADOW PALETTES
• Basic #01 (matte neutrals) #03 (shimmer neutrals) KRYOLAN & MAKE UP FOR EVER
• Bright matte single shadows BEN NYE LUMIERE GRANDE
• Pressed shimmering wet/dry shadows NAKED COSMETICS

EYELINER/LIPLINER/MASCARA/ BROWS Make Up For Ever is my go-to for all my pencils. Their Aqua Eye and Lip Pencils are amazing and I’m pretty sure there are no better kohl liners. I like the Kryolan waterproof cream liner because it dries a little slower, giving me extra play-time and I LOVE their silicone tipped HD Skinliner for dramatic hard-lines. I use drugstore mascara (my bad). MAKE UP FOR EVER
• Aqua Eyes & Lips and Kohl Pencila KRYOLAN
• Cream Liners & HD Skin Liner L’OREAL VOLUMINOUS
• Carbon Black COVERGIRL
• LashBlast Clump Crusher, Fusion Waterproof and Naturalash Clear Mascara CREAM COLOR & SFX I use cream color – a lot! I adjust foundations, create color correctors, make blush and bronzers, highlights and contours… I even create lipsticks out of them! I also use a lot of alcohol-activated colors when I need to create waterproof, non-transfer beauty make-up or highly realistic looking SFX. KRYOLAN SPECTRA COLOR
• Interferenze Shimmering Cream Color Palette MAQ PRO (LE MAQUILLAGE PROFESSIONAL)
• Fard Crème Petite Palettes – Corrector & FX Colors BEN NYE LUMIERE CREAM

LIPSTICK / LIPGLOSS I don’t carry many traditional ‘lipsticks’ unless I’m following continuity. OCC LIP TARS
• I’m obsessed with these insanely pigmented matte lip creams – I carry Primary & Secondary Colors plus Tarred & Feathered (Black & White) MAQ PRO (LE MAQUILLAGE PROFESSIONAL)
• Classic Lip Palette – Everything you need to create or adjust any lip color in one very compact palette KRYOLAN HIGH GLOSS
• Long lasting super wet looking intense shine – I carry Crystal, Silver and Gold. That’s all you really need MAKE-UP BRUSHES I collaborated with Royal & Langnickel Brush Company to create the [R]evolution Collection. 3 dozen state-of-the-art, high performance, cruelty-free, super durable make-up brushes designed specifically to withstand the daily abuse make-up artists put their creative tools through. RISTEN STEWART
The grunge girl goes glam
I
n many ways Kristen Stewart is an unusual icon. We love that she refuses to play the movie star game – she doesn’t ham it up at red carpet events, won’t repeat sound-bites for talk show hosts and appears more comfortable in old jeans and a beaten pair of Converse than a posh frock with the hottest label. However, when Kristen does do fancy, the fashion world sits up and takes notice. Harper’s Bazaar were no doubt pretty pleased (and relieved) when the rebellious Twilight-Saga star worked this fabulous photoshoot with Mario Testino.

orry for not being able to catch you last month but it’s been wedding season and my dearest and oldest friend Angela finally tied the knot in Ireland. I was there with my kit in tow to polish up all the bridesmaids, mother-inlaws and of course the gorgeous bride herself! I love a wedding but forgot what a production line it can be! It was literally one after the other – I did 8 faces in total and then had a quick 5 minutes for myself before the mad dash to the Cathedral (regular church just wasn’t good enough for our Angela!) A palette that is always a winner for weddings is Urban Decay’s Naked Palette 1. With a host of gorgeous light shimmery tones it’s a winner to create beautiful, subtle, gleaming smokeys which are perfect for a wedding. Another great

product for lips is Nars Satin Lip Pencils which are like a lipstick with a creamy texture and sheen – far better than gloss and give more moisture than a matte lippy. Well, after all the festivities it was back to work and my first assignment saw me shooting on a cowboy set in the middle of Kent for Italian Glamour magazine. It was a big denim and turquoise fest and so I kept the make-up glowy and healthy. Skin was buffed to perfection using Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Foundation and a little Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage concealer as the model was quite dark under the eyes. I used my favorite MAC Taupe Shadow to just lightly shade in the eye socket to give more depth to her eyes and a very light coating of mascara. For the cheeks, I used Chanel Bronze Universel and then hit the cheeks with a little Cargo Water Resistant blush in Bali to liven the skin up. For the lips, we went from using just lipbalm (ByTerry Rose lip balm is to die for) to then using different strengths of pink and gloss. I also shot with one of my good friends Ross Shields for Alvar magazine, which is a Swedish fashion magazine. It has quite a specific style when it comes to beauty, very natural and nothing to crazy and weird, so once again it was back to my taupes and nudes. A product that I am never without is Illamaqua’s Cream Pigment in Hollow, which can shade and sculpt the face without it W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 13 // O C TO B ER 2013

looking stripey or too dark. I used a little lip balm mixed with Diego della Palma’s orange lip stick to create a very subtle tangerine hue – no mascara was used as I felt it would take away the strength of her features and ‘prettify’ it. I love working with actresses and I got to work with the mesmeric Antonia Thomas for Harrods magazine. Antonia’s skin was flawless so I only used a little concealer under the eyes. I favor RMS un-cover up concealer at the moment which is invisible under the eyes! I used very little eye shadow, just a colour wash of Chanel’s 4 ombres in Regard Perle and then lashing of mascara. We played with a matte red lip (RUBY WOO) and a pinky/peach by Chanel – the look was understated sophistication. So, back in May I was secretly filming a new show which I can now talk about… please watch Sky Living’s new model extravaganza, Naomi Campbell’s The Face which started on 30th September. I’m head of make-up for the contestants and it‘s going to be high fashion, drama and tears!!! Lots of challenges and make-up fabulosity! Let me know what you guys think of the show on twitter @TheLizMartins.

BRUSHED PLAID SKIRT ASOS
NAIL EXPERT, ASHER COLEMAN, BRINGS US NEWS, REVIEWS AND TRENDS It’s October, the long dark nights are drawing in, cardigans are coming out and it’s time to give up the fight and accept it… summer is over. But as much as I’m dreading the winter, I am looking forward to updating my wardrobe. To compliment all the new and cosy knitwear I plan to hibernate in, are variations of red nail polish – as seen at recent Chanel, Zac Posen, Valentino and Topshop Unique shows. It’s a confident, sophisticated shade that I would not usually go for. However, come fall, this girl will be throwing caution to the icy wind. I particularly like oxblood red (a firm favourite of Mrs Beckham) as it’s a great shade for every skin tone and really comes alive when teamed with a cute plaid skirt or coloured knitwear. Above are my five favourites, ranging from budget to blow it! W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 13 // O C TO B ER 2013

ICHARD VEDON
WITH HIS SURREAL AND PROVOCATIVE IMAGES, RICHARD AVEDON CHANGED THE FACE OF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY Richard Avedon’s iconic images of models in motion leapt from the pages of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, injecting life and vibrancy into the fashion industry that had grown accustomed to flat, motionless photography. Avedon showed an interest in fashion from a young age, photographing the clothes in his father’s New York store. His first professional assignment came when serving as Merchant Marine during World War II, when appointed Photographers Mate Second Class and required to shoot identification portraits of sailors. In 1944, Avedon studied under Alexey Brodovitch, art director of Harper’s Bazaar, who hired him as a staff photographer. A 1955 shoot staged at a circus saw him create the strikingly original “Dovima with Elephants,” which has become one of the most iconic fashion photographs of all time. After 20 years, Avedon left Harper’s Bazaar in 1965, and moved to Vogue where he continued to push the boundaries by demanding more of his models in often controversial pictures.
“ALL photographs are
ACCURATE. None of
them IS the TRUTH ”
During is career he photographed everyone from Presidents to pop stars. His stark black and white portraits are revered for the way they capture the essential humanity and vulnerability of such prominent figures “what I hope to do is photograph people of accomplishment, not celebrity, and help define the difference once again.” Avedon’s revolutionary approach is the subject of an exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery, London, which features a selection of photographs from the 60s and 70s that focus specifically on his unique use of models in motion. Avedon: Women runs until 26th October 2013, [ click here ] to learn more.

MALE GROOMING
BODY LOTIONS . ss13 .

ell it was good while it lasted. As we go from beach bodies to baggy jumpers you could be forgiven for thinking it’s time for all the lotions and potions to hibernate for winter, but the cold weather presents a new set of problems for our skin to deal with. The temperature goes down, central heating is cranked up and these extreme fluctuations leave us itchy, sweaty and uncomfortable. So, here’s our top products to combat the autumn chill. Look for a lotion with good absorption and AHA’s (mild acids naturally found in many fruits) to remove dead skin. For best results apply after taking a warm shower and gently massage into the skin to stimulate circulation and blood flow. Re-apply regularly to knees and elbows as they tend to dry more quickly. Note that body lotions don’t always have SPF protection, so if you’re enjoying an Indian Summer don’t forget the sunblock!
