hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a makeup artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? It seems my life threw me into that direction even from an early age. When I was young I would draw and paint. Mostly womens faces. I was captivated with creating shadows and making things dimensional on paper. Then at fifteen I moved away from home. I always lived with girls so I would do their hair and makeup as a way to pay rent. Make-up for me was a way of survival. It wasn’t until later that I realised I should pursue it as a career. Are you self-taught or did you train? Self taught. I came up in an age where there weren’t mentors or schools, so I had to learn from my mistakes and always try to be better.

You grew up Texas, has that had an influence on your work in any way? Well, in the late 80s to mid 90s I was involved in the underground club scene. We would dress in costume to go to the clubs. We even got paid for it. It was like walking conceptual art – Mystic Gods,

30s Vamps, you name it. Doing these looks on myself made me look at things as not what was in front of me, but as possibilities. Who or what inspires you? Light inspires me. The way light shapes a face. The fact a rose can be one color at noon and a different color at sunset. Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? They are so different – the aspect of creation is what I love. How would you define your style? Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? I always find that my work has a late 70s early 80s feel to it. I never understood why. Then I realised that was the time I was a kid. My ideas of beauty were already becoming burned into who I am today. I think it’s the same for everyone. By the time you are eight years-old your definition of what you think is beautiful is set.

Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? Lip color. It’s an easy way to not look boring. Haha. Which other artist has helped you along the way in your career? As I mentioned before, coming up in my career I didn’t have anyone. However, after I became a working artist I was contacted to assist Kabuki. Who would say “No”?! We came from the same time period and scene, so we had similar references which made it enjoyable to work together. It was more like getting to hang out with an old friend. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. There was one time I was doing something for a magazine. It was a huge location at a mansion. The only way to keep in contact was though my cell phone. One of the models, a major one, was 4 hours late. So while they are shooting in the back I have to start on her. She was so nervous about being late and on other shoots she liked to push my buttons. So while doing her make-up I get a call…

“Yes, yes, oh! Ohhhh… ok!” “What… what?” She asks. “Well, they’ve said I have to take everything off and paint you purple.” She replied “What?! This is American Vogue, they don’t do that!!!” I say “Well, since Barney (the purple dinosaur) is an American icon, they want you to look like him.” She is upset since she likes to look pretty and feels it’s her punishment for being late. Then I say, “I’m just kidding, they just want me to change the lip colour.” We were cool after that. How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? Social media is a major player. It can give you jobs as well as take them away. You have to be savvy but you also have to be careful about what you post or say. Posting what you did Saturday

night or personal views can make you lose clients – even if it’s not work related. Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? Well as I said before my ideals were set early on, Annie Lennox from Eurythmics, Erte, the early Shiseido adverts by Serge Lutens, Kristen McMenamy who was a model in the 90s. All had a subconscious grasp on me. As an in-demand artist, how do you find time to relax? Relax? I don’t know this word! Ha ha! Usually when I am overseas I make sure and get a serious massage. In Kuala Lumpur I go to a place that utilises blind masseurs. It’s amazing! And plans for the future? To keep myself from going crazy from my schedule, I really can’t think too far ahead. I just live day by day and enjoy where my life takes me.

SKIN PERFECTING TREND BEAUTY GADGETS BY HEIDI SCARLETT-KING

It’s great to be back writing the Trends pages for TWO Magazine after a brief hiatus moving countries! I hope you enjoy these November Trends – I’m an absolute sucker for anything new and gadgety! I remember when I was young I would watch my Mum cleanse her face with thick, rich, cold cream and cotton wool, fast forward to the present and my word have things changed! In fact, over the last five years, the beauty world has seen the introduction of so many face gadgets it’s hard to know what they all actually do! Here’s my favourite new toys that cleanse, scrub, massage and tone the face to a more perfect complexion… 1. FOREO LUNA Swedish brand Foreo have perfected a pocket-sized ‘all in one’ cleanser and toner with their slickly designed Luna. The best part about it is the hygenic rubber design cover meaning there is no need to clean it as no bacteria can stick to it. Apply cleanser to the face then move the Luna in sections all over the face to effectively remove make-up and dirt. I’m also really enjoying the bonus facial massage when you flip the Luna on the reverse side! Be gone double chin! WEB // HEIDISCARLET TKING.COM T WIT TER // @HEIDISCARLET TK

52

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 26 // N OV E M B ER 2014

2. MEDISANA FACIAL SAUNA This beautiful skin humidifier works by steaming the skin to help open up pores so dirt can be released more easily as well as allowing moisturisers and serums to better penetrate the skin. A great tool for skin preparation and blood circulation. It’s like a spa day for your face at home! 3. WONDER CLOTH ALL NATURAL MAKE-UP REMOVER CLOTH Japanese brand Wondercloth have created a genius fabric make-up removing cloth that is easily cleaned under running water. It’s very quick drying and ideal for travel. I love using it on clients before applying make-up as it thoroughly cleanses the skin. 4. CLARISONIC MIA 2 FESTIVAL OF COLOURS EDITION We all fell madly in love with the Clarisonic when it launched a while back and since then we’ve seen other brands like Phillips and Olay introduce similar products. Now Clarisonic have released a lighter, more compact version of the original (especially handy if you travel) with a few more colour options. Simply apply your favourite liquid cleanser to your face and move the Clarisonic in small circular motions around the face. Just don’t forget the neck! What was your route into make-up Kristyan? When I was a young boy around seven years-old, I watched a behind the scenes featurette on the making of ‘Legend’. I remember being blown away with a make-up transformation taking place and wanted so much to make monsters. I was very much a creative individual rather than academic and through my entire education I would sculpt, paint, draw, design and even practise make-up. When I was old enough I signed up for a media make-up course at the College of West Anglia and studied for two years. I later took part in a specialist prosthetic course run by Nick Dudman and it was on this course that he offered me a trainee position on Harry Potter. That was my foot into the film industry. From there I worked on Harry Potter for many years and was also hired by other companies on many other projects. Over the years I gained a good reputation, so much so, that I found myself having my own company and running my own projects as a designer. My company is now in its sixth year and growing fast. We have worked on Edge of Tomorrow, Les Miserables and 71 to name a few. We’re currently working on Mission Impossible 5 along with many TV projects. Two years ago I started a materials company (PS Composites) with my business partner, David Power, focusing on the creative side of film production, not just make-up effects materials, but props, set construction, SFX.

One product you never leave home without? There are many products in my kit that have become essential to what I do and slowly I have gained favourite tools, brushes and materials over the years. I have to have Premier Products Skin Illustrator palettes for colour, Telesis 5 adhesive to use with prosthetics and I have recently started manufacturing my own direct apply range such as Dirts, Bloods, and Creams. How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? The industry has changed in prosthetic make-up over the years mainly due to the materials that have been developed and become available. The film industry in the UK has grown so much that there are times where we struggle to find crew. We have now started a trainee scheme at the company to try and prevent this shortfall from happening in the future. TV productions are also being more creative and are using our facilities so much more. As an in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? This is probably the most difficult part of my job. I am a father of three and my wife, whom also works in the industry, understands the hours that I have to commit. So, we make sure weekends are ours and we tend to shut down for two weeks over the Christmas period.

ey there from LA LA land! Yes, this month’s travel column is from Los Angeles, California. I have recently returned home to NY after a couple of weeks on the west coast doing the glam for two TV presenters on a new makeover series. Like many American make-up artists I spend a lot of time in LA and honestly have a love/hate relationship with it. It’s the only place I’ve ever travelled to where I actually felt homesick. LA is very spread out and you need a car to get around so it can feel very isolating. However, after a few work trips out there I got my groove on and found some spots which have made me feel

more at home and which I’m here to share with all of you. A couple of years ago I spent a month transplanted in LA to work on a TV show called Fashion Star. Most mornings, before recording, I’d go on sunrise hikes to Runyon Canyon with my dog, King Louis. There are lots of beautiful hiking trails surrounding the LA area like Bronson Canyon (which leads you right underneath the famous Hollywood sign). But if you’re trying to grab a pre-work hike, Runyon is located just at the edge of the city, very close to a lot of the TV studios and the view of the city is breathtaking. For more info and to check out some of the other hikes in the area

at www.discoverlosangeles.com/blog/ hiking-los-angeles-las-best-trails. If a beauty store could be compared to a cathedral then a pilgrimage for any make-up artist must be Larchmont Beauty (www.larchmontbeauty.com). The walls are lined with the hottest products and this place became my saviour when I needed to top up my kit. Also located on Robertson Boulevard are both MAC (www.robertsonboulevard -shop.com/Stores/MAC._Cosmetics.html) and Make-up Forever Pro-Boutiques (www.makeupforever.com/us/en-us/ brand/boutiques). If spending too much time in a car starts to get on your nerves (as it does for me

when staying in LA) I suggest heading to The Grove (www.thegrovela.com), an outdoor mall where you can stretch your legs. It has a wonderful farmers market with an international array of delicious food stalls. There is also loads of great restaurants to choose from as well as a movie theatre and it’s also right next door to CBS studios. I spent time there last year filming a TV show called Style Pop and last month I dropped in to watch a live recording of Dancing With The Stars (America’s version of Celebrity Come Dancing). I lucked out as Jessie J performed and was a guest judge. The make-up artists on this show are really fantastic. It was great to see their work W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 26 // N OV E M B ER 2014

up close and personal – it’s now inspired me to bust out my bag of glitters and bedazzle everyone! The Little Door (www.thelittledoor.com) located in West Hollywood (there’s also one in Santa Monica) is a magical indoor garden restaurant that’s very romantic. I had dinner there last January when out in LA during the awards season for Nylon magazine and fashion designer Nicole Miller. They served up plate after plate of scrumptious dishes and mouth watering desserts to die for. If a day out by the beach is what you fancy then make sure you reserve a spot to watch the sunset at the funky Hotel Erwin (www.hotelerwin.com). Grab a beer and check out the spectacular views of palm tree lined Venice Beach. Yes, Venice is a little more grotty then the pristine hills of Malibu but it’s quirky urban vibe and graffiti painted walls remind me of my home in Brooklyn. Venice Beach is a great area to rent a bike and explore. This being an article about LA – a city filled with the health and youth obsessed, I thought I’d mention a couple of my new

favourite anti-ageing and beauty finds. Also, being a November issue, it’s my birthday month and, with turning 41, means I too am testing loads of new anti-ageing treatments and products! Talik Eye Patch Therapy Pads… you stick the kidney shaped stickers under your eyes and leave for 30 minutes. These anti-wrinkle, anti-dark circle and anti-puffiness patches are like mini suction cups. An awesome new beauty find for me and I recommend for anyone who suffers from swollen eyes. I’ve been keeping them in my kit and use on any models who’ve shown up to shoots after

a late night. Now I’ve always been dubious about BB and CC creams, thinking they are pretty gimmicky but I’ve given the La Roche-Posay Rosaliac CC Cream a try and it works wonders. I love using it after a good face cleansing when my skin may be a little red and before make-up. It’s super light and great for healing pigmentation spots. Well, you can imagine my surprise when going to the dentist, they tell me my teeth are shifting so badly that I need braces. Not really something you want to hear in your 40s! So I’m trying out

Invisalign. These are the clear ‘snap on’ braces that are less noticable then the metallic tracks I wore in my pre-teens! My orthodontist claims by shifting my teeth correctly it will also give me a more youthful smile. I will keep you posted on how it’s working. I’m getting mine done at The Gelb Center in New York (www.gelbcenter.com) whose celebrity clients include Raquel Welch, my all time beauty icon and muse and who claimed in her autobiography that Dr Gelb’s dental work gave her a mini face lift. Sign me up!

oung Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann, left his native Germany for Paris in 1930 and found work as a model and photographer’s assistant. Taking his influences from ancient classical art, Bauhaus ideals of modern design and Surrealism, he published his first photograph in French Vogue in 1931. His work was admired for it’s dramatic lighting and through his experiments in the Vogue studio he became one of the first photographers to perfect new colour processing techniques. His critically acclaimed exhibition in 1932 made him instantly famous and throughout the 1930s he captured some of Hollywood’s brightest stars including Rita Hayworth, Bette Davis, Vivien Leigh, Noël Coward, Ginger Rogers and Marlene Dietrich. Moving to New York in 1937, he met legendary designer Coco Chanel and established a working relationship that would last for decades to come. In 1943, he became a US citizen and took the name Horst P. Horst. Moving away from the fashion world, he travelled widely throughout the 1940s and 1950s, exploring his passion for

architecture, ancient cultures and landscapes. An exhibition currently at the V&A museum in London explores the creative process behind some of his most famous photographs and his collaborations and friendships with leading couturiers around the world.

I don’t think photography has anything remotely to do with the brain. It has to do with eye appeal.

THIS MONTH DR RENÉE TACKLES THE TRICKY BUSINESS OF CELLULITE… WHY WOMEN ARE CURSED BY IT, WHAT IT IS AND WHAT THE TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE… Cellulite was first used to describe the alteration of the skin surface of the legs and backside to look like ‘orange peel’ or dimpled, in the 1920s. It is a common problem with estimates suggesting that 80% of women over the age of 20 have it to some degree. It is mainly a curse of the outer, front and back of thighs and buttocks but can be seen on the inner thighs and even arms. Sadly it is a problem of women with men hardly ever suffering. Whilst not a physical health problem and causing no harm, cellulite can have a dramatic psychological impact on women and is felt more in summer months when more skin is on display. The biggest challenge for practitioners is finding the solution: as yet there is no complete answer.

So what is it? Essentially fat cells in the area expand within tight compartments or pockets, this causes them to bulge. The skin septa shorten and this pulls the skin down over the bulging fat cells and this, coupled with loss of skin elasticity, produces the characteristic dimpled appearance. Weight however does not seem associated and slim and heavier women can have the same degree of cellulite. There is also an association with diet and a sedentary lifestyle. What are the treatment options? There are creams and potions which really don’t work; don’t waste your cash. Next come the non-invasive combination therapies of ultrasound, radio-frequency and lasers.

F

With 3D-Lipo for example, the skin is massaged to increase lymphatic drainage, ultrasound is used to remodel the fat cells and then radio-frequency is used to tighten the skin. Results can be excellent but need to be combined with exercise and diet improvements. You also need a course of treatment over 6-8 weeks. Thereafter you are looking at invasive procedures that work under the skin and involve day case surgery under sedation to break down fat using lasers. All in all there are no quick fixes for cellulite and a good diet high in water, low in caffeine and alcohol, combined with exercise, is always going to help and at the very least should be employed alongside any treatment you choose.

“ THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE

FOR PRACTITIONERS IS FINDING THE SOLUTION: A S Y ET T HER E I S NO COMPLETE ANSWER

GILLETTE FUSION HYDRA GEL SENSITIVE SKIN I have always been more of a wet shave man so a good gel to go with a razor is essential. Being a dancer means a lot of make-up gets applied for performances and mixed with constant sweat my skin can become sensitive so this gel isn’t too harsh. 80

Being a lad from Grimsby regular moisturiser wasn’ even something I knew ab until my fiancée Karen Ha introduced me to it. Now I’m 32 as opposed 22 as w I use this twice daily.

DOVE TINTED MOISTURISER It’s a long standing joke among my friends that I am so pale that I am almost transparent! When I have a dance show coming up and don’t feel like getting myself down to the spray tan booth, over a few days this bottle can at least make me look like the colour of a normal person! Must remember not to get the one with the extra shimmer though!

CLINIQUE SKIN SUPPLIES FOR MEN DARK SPOT CORRECTOR You never know when my job calls for a quick interview on camera or a photo. This can go somewhere to making you at least look alive and not all patchy and rough (which is probably my normal look).

NIVEA PEARL AND BEAUTY ANTIPERSPIRANT After years of using generic teen deodorant sprays, my fiancée convinced me that girls actually smell better than boys so I now really on her to take care of my would-be stench after hours of dancing. Actually one of the most important things a dancer can own!

PACO RABANNE 1 MILLION My fiancée loves this scent, so yet again, if it’s good enough for her it’s good enough for me! Maybe she should take over my entire bag!
