appy new year! Ok, that’s a strange way to greet you in February we know, but as you may have noticed, we have gone bi-monthly with TWO magazine… and this one’s a little late too! We have to be honest and say that it’s difficult with increasingly busy schedules to consistently put out a monthly publication and we know that our fabulous regular contributors find it tough too – especially around the busier industry times like Fashion Week.

02

We’ve also moved to the Issuu platform which we hope will be easy for you to access on different devices. Valentine’s Day is on our doorstep and let’s be honest, it’s a great opportunity to lavish some pampering time on ourselves and pretend it’s for our loved ones! In this issue we have our friend, Mira Parmar, sharing her tips on underwater shoots and an interview with the fantastic Margo Holder along with our regular features. We hope you enjoy the issue. There’s been some gorgeous looks at the recent BAFTAs, and Grammy’s and we’re looking forward to the Academy Awards next week. It’s always interesting to see how some of the new season’s trends transfer to the red carpet. Here’s to 2015 being a wonderful year for you all. x

SUBMISSIONS IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUBMIT PHOTOS PLEASE NOTE THAT WE LOOK FOR STRONG BEAUTY STORIES THAT HAVE A MINIMUM OF THREE DIFFERENT IMAGES WITH CHANGES OF MAKE-UP THAT ARE FROM THE SAME SHOOT. FOR FASHION FOCUSED STORIES, WE PREFER A MINIMUM OF FIVE SHOTS WITH CHANGES OF STYLING, THANK YOU. PLEASE EMAIL SUBMISSIONS@TWO-MAGAZINE.COM PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL REGARDING WORK EXPERIENCE/INTERNSHIP AS WE ARE CURRENTLY UNABLE TO TAKE ANYONE ON.

Do you remember a moment when you decided “I want to be a make-up artist”? In my early teenage years I started to experiment with make-up, mixing different products to create tinted moisturisers not available on the market. I remember picking my mum’s mascara and lipstick out for her at home.

You trained at the respected Institute Technique du Maquillage – why did you choose to go to Paris and how did it help you in your career? In the nineties I went traveling across Europe and Paris was my dream city. I fell in love with the beauty of the city and the language. I decided to stay to learn in France and learn to speak French. One day while studying in the library, I came across an article about Institute

Also, I find the great make-up artists such as Val Garland, Charlotte Tilbury, Pat McGrath very inspiring. I was very fortunate to assist Pat during London Fashion Week. Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? To keep my lips soft I absolutely love Confort Extreme Levres nutritive lip balm from Sisley and I would not leave the house

BEFORE I BECAME A MAKE-UP ARTIST I WENT TO ART SCHOOL AND ART HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY INSPIRATION du Maquillage and decided to learn the art of make-up there. Where do you find inspiration? Before I became a make-up artist I went to art school and art has always been my inspiration. During my studies in Paris I was fascinated by paintings of Sandro Botticelli, Tamara de Lempicka and I frequently visited galleries, admiring impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces.

without Amazing Concealer by Amazing Cosmetics and black Lancôme mascara. Also, I always have Phyto 9 Nourishing day cream with 9 plants in my handbag, its an incredible rescue product for very dry hair, which I am always buying during my travel to Paris and New York.

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 28 // J A N – FEB 2015

You have you’re own make-up school – why is working with students and sharing your knowledge important to you? I have been teaching make-up for seven years and running Master Classes for make-up brands. Make Up Atelier UK is my own make-up school which I set up in 2010. I designed the programme for students who would love to learn make-up on a very intense level, flexible basis and in a short amount

I ADORE SHARING MY KNOWLEDGE WITH STUDENTS... I FIND IT VERY INSPIRING AND REWARDING TO OBSERVE THEIR WORK my own creamy blushes mixing colourful pan sticks. On the other hand there were opportunities. I started to work with magazines and celebrities straight after completing my studies. Nowadays, with the help of the internet, social media, access to wonderful make-up products and great courses, it is easier to become a make-up artist and build the network, but I get the impression that nowadays the competition is much higher.

of time. I adore sharing my knowledge with students, who sometimes come to study with me from across the globe: Japan, Russia, Brazil, Poland, Spain. I find it very inspiring and rewarding to observe their work all over world.

How do you feel the industry has changed since you started? When I first started 20 years ago there was no internet, mobile phones or social media. so it was much harder to make contacts. There was also no Photoshop to edit imperfections and no digital cameras. We had to look at the polaroids and make-up had to be absolutely perfect. The quality of the product was very different, and quite difficult to apply. I do remember creating

Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? Early in my career I moved several times to different countries and always worked independently. Until I came to London to assist Pat McGrath, discovered new techniques and found her to be a great inspiration and guru.

What do you like to do in your free time? I love spending time with my child, family and friends. Whenever I have a few days off I jump on the Eurostar to visit my friends in Paris. While in London, for relaxation I love swimming and practising yoga. And of course traveling to unknown destinations.

Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? When travelling I find beauty in the different cultures, nature, architecture, art and from the beautiful people.

And plans for 2015? 2015 will be a year of big changes and challenges in my life. I would prefer not to reveal everything yet. I am also working on a make-up book containing lots of technical knowledge and there are some fabulous shoots planned with some of the big names in the industry.

Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry story. Because you’re in the fashion industry and often in exotic locations, it’s sometimes assumed that all you drink is champagne – sometimes it really is champagne or nothing! lol. The only trouble is you always have to start shooting first thing in the morning.

A NEW YEAR AND A NEW START, YET JANUARY AND FEBRUARY AREN’T ALWAYS THE BEST MONTHS FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN. IT CAN OFTEN BE DRIED OUT AND PARCHED FROM CENTRAL HEATING, TEA AND COFFEE. THAT OR YOU MAY FIND IT’S GOING WILD, OVER PRODUCING OIL AND HAVING BREAKOUTS AS A RESULT OF OVER INDULGING DURING THE HOLIDAYS.

NEW YEAR RECOVERY

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 28 // J A N – FEB 2015

HERE ARE SOME OF MY TOP QUICK FIXES FOR THE THREE MAIN TYPES OF SKIN:

46

For an oily blemished skin.

For a parched dry skin

CLEAN & CLEAR ADVANTAGE ACNE CONTROL MOISTURIZER

FACE MATTERS EVENING ELIXIR

This is a light weight, oil-free fluid that targets the over-production of oil to regain some balance while reducing shine. It also targets blemishes and blackheads without over stripping the skin. It’s great for daily use even on a sensitive skin type. Plus there’s no SPF so can you use it when photographed without risking flashback. For a thirsty dehydrated skin

DARPHIN HYDRASKIN LIGHT CREAM GEL My skin is always dehydrated as I have not only the hot bulbs in my make-up studio but also air conditioning. Plus I may be partial to a glass of wine. If there is one product that’s perfect for dehydrated skin then it’s this. A beautiful gel formula that feels light and fresh on the skin. Using natural ingredients such as butterfly lavender and salicornia herbacea it’s like giving your thirsty skin a glass of cool water to drink. Again, there’s no SPF, so no worry of flashback if being photographed.

This beautiful British line has been created in Hampshire, in the UK. Using the finest natural active ingredients the Evening Elixir is an exquisite treatment to help the skin retain moisture while aiding cell regeneration. Blending omega 3, 6 & 9, plus vitamin E with Rose oil and Jasmine. It also contains pure organic silicon to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. It will leave your skin restored hydrated, healed, soothed and plump. Plus for every item sold a donation will go to Refuge for women and children against domestic violence. If you are struggling with your skin this month I hope these products help you. But don’t forget, what you put in your body is just as important as what you apply to the surface. Up the water consumption along with lots fruit and vegetables after all don’t we all detox in the new year?!

GOLDEN GLOBES BEST OF BEAUTY

48

THE NEW YEAR HITS US LIKE A TON OF BORING BRICKS AS WE GET BACK TO WORK AND THE USUAL ROUTINE. STILL, AT LEAST WE HAVE THE AWARDS SEASON TO BRIGHTEN IT UP A LITTLE AND THIS YEAR HAS MOST CERTAINLY STARTED WITH A RESOUNDING BANG! IT’S BEEN SERIOUSLY HARD TO PICK FAVOURITES THIS YEAR BUT HERE ARE THREE SHOWSTOPPING LOOKS OF THE GOLDEN GLOBES RED CARPET. B Y HE I D I S C A R L ETT - KI N G WEB // HEIDISCARLET TKING.COM T WIT TER // @HEIDISCARLET TK

JENNIFER LOPEZ Let’s face it, J-Lo stopped hearts beating when she walked down the red carpet; there’s not one aspect of this look she didn’t nail! Yes those heavenly smokey eyes were hypnotic but what definitely stood out for me was her contoured and highlighted skin, so she wins ‘Best Skin’ and here’s how to recreate it: Prime the skin, ideally using two different primers. One down the T-zone and front plane to mattify. I recommend Lancôme La Base Makeup Primer. Then along the top of cheekbones, above the brows and on the cupids bow use Becca Illuminating Skin Perfector for highlighting and giving a healthy glow. Apply YSL Fusion Ink Foundation to each section of the face and seamlessly blend away edges. This new velvety matte and weightless foundation wears for 24 hours so it’s perfect for an all-night event. Buff the darker colour from the Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate into the outer edges of the face and add more under the cheeks and temples to create J-Lo’s contoured base. Pop a gorgeous shimmery nude blush onto the apples of the cheeks, I’m loving the Becca Beach Tint Soufflé in Fig/Opal.

Add the Tom Ford Illuminator shade through the T-zone, above the brows and on the brow bone to give that flash bulb bling skin! JESSICA CHASTAIN Actually, for me Jessica wins best all round look – I think this is absolute perfection! The eyes particularly steal the show as the shape and shades used are so divine. Here’s my take on how to recreate them.

Sweep across the lid to the outer edges in an upward motion Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon eyeshadow pencil in Amber Haze and also under the eye to create a feline shape. Using the Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow palette in Monochrome start by applying the Peony Peach shade on the inner eyelid, then apply the Light Mauve and Dark Chocolate on the outer edges of the eye and underneath. Soften with a clean, soft brush but add more depth in the outer edges until the desired strength. Apply lashings of mascara to both top and bottom lashes, try L’Oreal Mega Volume in black. Don’t forget a pair of

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY There were a few contenders for this award however Keira’s gorgeous ontrend wine-stained lip shade won me over – this colour will be seen a lot of the next few months. Here’s how to do this lip trend. Prep your lips the night before the event with a toothbrush and lip balm to remove all the dry dead skin. This will ensure a smooth application. To create that worn in, stained lip effect, try Kiko Long Lasting Colour Lip Marker in 106 AppleRed. Draw the shade on slowly and blend in with a brush layer by layer to the intensity you want.

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 28 // J A N – FEB 2015 2015

Start by using an eye primer across the lid, Revlon PhotoReady Eye Primer and Brightener is fantastic to keep the eye make-up on all day.

EAST AFRICA It’s a part of who I am. My parents were born there so I spent my childhood summers in Kenya and Tanzania visiting family and going on safari. FILM S

FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL I love a decent rom-com and this is the ultimate. BEFORE SUNRISE It’s charming in its simplicity.

MONSOON WEDDING The first non-Bollywood film I saw that was set in India and I love it. The soundtrack is fantastic.

MUSIC 90s RNB I grew up on it. Memories of my teens come flooding back if I hear Blackstreet’s No Diggity. BOLLYWOOD There is something mesmerizing about Qawwali singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and me and my husband chose his song Oh Re Piya for our first dance at our wedding reception.

MAKE-UP ARMANI LUMINOUS SILK FOUNDATION When I started working in TV, a make-up artist used these shades on my face and I have never bought any other foundation. It has just the right mix of yellow and pink undertones for my skin colour. MAC STUDIO FINISH CONCEALER I’ve been wearing this everyday to cover up my natural dark circles for almost 20 years and if I don’t wear it, people ask me if I’m ill! SMASHBOX ALWAYS SHARP WATERPROOF KOHL LINER I always wear black eyeliner and this is the only non-liquid liner that looks rich like kajal but doesn’t run.

COUNTRY MUSIC I’ve always had a soft spot for modern country. Lady Antebellum’s Need You Know is one of my favourite songs.

Not only does it explain the make-up techniques used by the iconic make-up artist who died in 2004, but it also showcases his incredible talent. The book also features a set of famous, uncanny photographs showing some of the most familiar faces from the past 30 years completely transformed so they’re barely recognisable – Gwyneth Paltrow as James Dean, Christina Ricci as Edith Piaf and Julia Roberts becomes Julie Christie. Split into five sections, each covering a different aspect of make-up artistry, from how you view the face to applying the make-up, Aucoin breaks down his techniques and his product preferences as he takes you through each look. Though on occasion the make-up style may show its age, the techniques and talent in this book are timeless. Face Forward and Making Faces (also by Kevyn Aucoin) are a necessary addition to any make-up artists collection.

SHOOTING IN ANOTHER WORLD! WITH MAKE-UP ARTIST MIR A PARMAR

Doing my first ever underwater shoot was challenging, I had to prep everything so perfectly and spent weeks researching various products that work in water, trying and testing products on myself to see if they could stand up to the challenge. I had no experience of underwater, only my own common sense, creative flair and my kit!

I’ve now learnt that underwater shooting, for me, is all about being confident with make-up, but also a bit of trial and error. You can create some amazing images and some of my most beautiful bodies of work have resulted from these shoots.

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 28 // J A N – FEB 2015 2015

I love shooting underwater, it’s a different world and there is just something so unique and magic about it. I also tend to art direct and style my underwater shoots, so it becomes very personal. A lot of hard work goes into it but it’s extremely rewarding when you get the final images back.

77

TOP TIPS I learnt the hard way but I’d love to share a few tips for getting great images from shooting underwater:

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 28 // J A N – FEB 2015

PREP Prep well, create some great mood boards of what you would like your shoot to look like.

78

RESEARCH Research images that inspire you – they don’t have to be underwater images. ANGLE Look at make-up ideas and the story you’d like to create. I always find a story gives you an angle to work with and to build on. BEAUTY OR EDITORIAL Decide whether you want to shoot a beauty story or more of an editorial story. THE A TEAM Equip yourself with a great team and then you are ready to go!

WHAT MAKE-UP WORKS Creams and grease paints are the key to great underwater make-up, they sit beautifully on the skin. Use a really good cream base, a shade or two darker than you would normally use as shooting underwater always makes the skin look paler than it really is.

If you do use mascara, don’t forget to make sure it’s waterproof. Contour well underwater, it looks great when you do it quite heavily. Don’t be afraid to make it darker

I don’t tend to use powder and like the dewiness of skin without it. Always be on the ball and keep an eye on your model, check your make-up every time he/she comes out of the water as it does move. Liquid liners work really well on the eyes and cream blushers work well too. But I also sometimes use buffed in lipstick on cheeks – anything goes in make-up! Also, invest in some great brushes. So, be confident and remember it’s only make-up! There is no right or wrong – just have fun.

Remember to always take the foundation down the neck as you would do on land if you are going a shade darker. I don’t always bother myself with eyelashes or even mascara, but again that’s personal and a bit of a trial and error on waterproof brands.

than you normally would. Bright, bold colours work beautifully, even if it looks too much outside, it will be diffused under water.

HOW TO NAIL IT THIS SPRING/ SUMMER 2015 B Y AMY H O W ES

Nail art doesn’t always have to be overly complicated. Here are five easy steps to achieve the half-moon look. Firstly, file your nails into a squared oval shape and buff the face of the nail to ensure that there is no oil, water, or moisturiser left on the surface.

THE HALF-MOON IS A TREND SEEN ON MANY NAILS THIS SEASON. IT’S APTLY NAMED AFTER THE SHAPE ACCOMPLISHED BY THE COLOUR ON THE NAILS. IT CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH ANY COLOURS TO GIVE A SUBTLE OR BOLD EFFECT. YOU COULD ALSO CUT OUT ONE STEP 1 OF THE COLOURS ALL Apply a base coat and let it dry. This will protect the nails from any staining and TOGETHER TO GIVE will help to reduce chips. We have used A NEGATIVE SPACE – butter LONDON Patent-Gel Basecoat. ALSO ANOTHER TREND SEEN FOR 2015.

STEP 2

To simply achieve the half-moon design, as seen on the runway, use Ring Binder stickers placed on the base of your nails. If you are feeling confident you could always use a nail art pen to complete the look.

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 28 // J A N – FEB 2015 2015

Apply two coats of your chosen nail colour. We have used Nails Inc. Nailkale in Regents Park, a vibrant hot pink colour. The formula of polish is infused with kale extract, which helps with hydrating and nourishing.

STEP 3

89

STEP 4 Using your next colour, apply the polish over the rest of your nail. We used The Body Shop Colour Crush Nail Colours in Smokey Rose. This quick-dry, high gloss polish has a good colour pay off so we only used one coat.

STEP 5 Wait until your nails are dry before carefully removing the stickers. Then apply a top coat to finish the nails, this will help give a more durable finish. We used Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat as it gives a great glossy finish.

B

onjour mes amis! This issue I’m talking about the capital of style – Paris, France. I’ve worked in Paris ‘the City of Lights’ over the years on various jobs and events including filming an episode of MTV’s Plain Jane and designing the make-up for fashion designer Qasimi at Men’s Fashion Week. Every street you stroll down or corner you turn there’s almost always something beautiful to gaze upon. With its incredible architecture and cosy cafes, it’s no wonder Paris is considered one of the most romantic cities in the world. Now, every make-up artist I know when visiting Paris makes sure they get a chance to shop in one of their incredible pharmacies. Even the most basic of beauty products seem to have an air of chic. I always stock up on amazing beauty staples such as Bioderma Crealine (a water based make-up remover that seriously takes off anything), Homeoplasmine (a wonder beauty balm) and Embryolisse

Paris as a city is designed like a massive museum with its avenues adorned with art, statues and creativity, and inside historical buildings such as the Louvre you get the chance to glimpse iconic works of art like the Mona Lisa. Though I’m always surprised how much smaller she is in person! (I know typical American comment). My favourite museum is the Musee d’Orsay – an old railway station meaning even the building is really special. This museum always makes me think of 1990s dance track ‘Encore En Fois’ by Sash! There are so many spectacular museums to visit in Paris that the smaller ones often get over looked. If your taste is more offbeat,

(a super-hydrating creamy moisturiser). My favourite discount pharmacy is City Pharma located on the corner of Rue 4 and Rue Bonaparte in St Germain.

then be sure to check out the section on forgotten museums at the website www.mylittle.fr/mylittleparis/en/ which highlights some of the more obscure places to visit. And, just as much museum as mausoleum, you can take a trip to the beautiful Pierre Lachaise Cemetery to pay respects at the graves of Edith Piaf and The Doors’ Jim Morrison.

Paris is not a place you go hungry. The restaurants, patisseries and boulangeries that line its streets are as much a feast for the eyes as the stomach. Macaroons, croissants, baguettes filled with brie and jam, crepes and cakes swirled with cream, steak cooked to perfection and moules frites. You can eat your way through the city and never order the same thing twice. I actually think the French consider butter as its own food group. If you find yourself on your way down to Les Marais (‘the Marsh’) in the Jewish section of the 6th make sure you check out the falafel shop there, it’s one of the best in the world with the cutest staff to wait on you. Be sure to visit Sacré-Cœur Basilica as the view of Paris is breath-taking from the top. Then head to the artist

quarter of Montmartre for a few hours with its sketch artists and outdoor cafes. When filming with MTV, I remember having a wonderful dinner in the middle of the square under an array of fairy lights... my smoked salmon bathed in a cream sauce so light it tasted as though it was cooked in a cloud. A perfect way to see Paris is by boat. You really get a wonderful sense of the magnitude of the city, cruising down the Seine past monuments such as the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame. When filming

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 28 // J A N – FEB 2015 2015

Plain Jane we filmed a scene on a river cruise. I had a ‘Where’s Waldo’ moment in the episode. You can find me on screen hidden in the back of the boat as a ‘tourist’. Some of my favourite French products: Sisley Paris – Phyto-Ombré Glow luminous eye shadows. Available in four metallic tones, they leave an intense pearlescent pay off. Chanel – Lèvres Scintillantes Glossimer lip glosses. The colour choices are just

beautiful with the pale pink and fuchsia tones leaving the lips looking like an old fashioned lolly-pop. Dior – Diorshow Waterproof Mascara. This is one of my make-up kit staples. Juicy lashes without clumping!

WITH DR RENÉE HOENDERKAMP Acne can be an awful disease that is not often recognised by others for its devastating effects on self-esteem and confidence. It can leave people feeling depressed and isolated as non sufferers often can’t understand. Associated with teenagers, sadly acne often persists into adulthood. It affects 90% of adolescents but 12% of women will have acne until 44! With different lesions, acne is graded from mild to severe, ranging from comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), to deep, inflamed, pustules and cysts,

which often scar. Acne occurs when the glands next to hair follicles in the skin produce too much sebum and block. Bacteria then multiply and infect the pore. The causes are complicated. • High levels of testosterone: teenage boys and sometimes women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). • Hormone surges around periods, pregnancy and PCOS. • Some comedonic cosmetic products. • Medications: e.g. steroids, Lithium, anti-epileptics. • Clothing causing pressure; e.g sweat bands, backpacks. • Smoking in older adults. Poor diet or dirty skin is not a cause. In fact, over cleansing can aggravate the skin. There is no evidence that sunlight improves acne and neither is it infectious! Early treatment is really important to stop scarring. I see lots of people in my clinic who come to address their scarring with active acne. We have to control the acne first and this can take 2-3 months! Treatments range from over the counter potions to oral Roaccutane. The acne severity dictates the treatment, but as

a rule of thumb the treatment order ladder is: Topical Benzyl Peroxide Topical antibiotics Combination Benzyl Peroxide and antibiotic creams Retinoid creams/gels Oral Roaccutane Your doctor should assess the degree of your acne and start you at the appropriate level on the ladder of treatments.

If all treatments, up to and including retinoids fail, your GP should refer you to a dermatologist for specialist input and consideration of oral Roaccutane. You are never too old for this! So, in summary, acne is a debilitating disease that affects mainly women in adulthood and is often poorly treated. The treatment ladder is simple and is fairly easy to use with few side effects. There are very little lifestyle changes that will either cause or improve acne, so the most important thing is proper, speedy treatment. And beautiful makeup works best on skin that has well treated acne!

For women, the oral contraceptive pill can be effective as it supresses hormone fluctuations that increase sebum production. All acne creams can be quite drying so starting slowly is always a good idea. People often tend to stop using creams because they can’t tolerate the resulting dry, flaking skin. When prescribing a retinoid I always advise using it every third night until tolerated, then every

other night, and eventually every night. A pleasing side effect of retinoids is the stimulation of collagen growth and therefore wrinkles improve!
